Fines Allen
CEDARVILLE — Fines E. Allen, 79, of Cedarville died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, in his home. He was a retired shipping/receiving supervisor for Gerber Co. He also had worked for the Forestry Service and the Civil Conservation Corps. He was a member of the Shamrock Community Church and attended the Cedarville Senior Citizens Lodge.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Hall cemetery in Natural Dam.
He is survived by his wife, Lorene; two daughters, Dena Gray of Portland, Ore., and Linda Jones of Fort Smith; a stepdaughter, Pat Edwards of Chester; three sons, Jerry Allen of Van Buren, Emery Allen of Kibler and Nathan Allen of Fort Smith; five stepsons, Jeff Edwards of Chester, Johnny Edwards of Uniontown and Gary Edwards of Fort Smith, and Tommy and Roger Edwards, both of Van Buren; a brother, Glen Allen of Grants Pass, Ore.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Chris Marion, Tommy Wells, Paul Seratt, Bobby Evans, Jerry Don Atwell and Eulis Pridgeon.
Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons.

Rosa Bell “Aunt Rosa” Mathews
Rosa Bell “Aunt Rosa” Mathews, 90, of Fort Smith went to be with her Lord Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was born May 1, 1912, in Hayti, Mo., to James G. and Henrietta Kesner. She was a homemaker and a member of Central Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Smith where she was also a member of the Good Samaritans. Her husband, Loyd F. Mathews preceded her in death.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Central Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Smith with interment at Woodlawn Memorial Park under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
She is survived by three daughters, Lou Kamerman of Searcy, Genese Minor of Horn Lake, Miss., and Mary Jaap Mathews of Fort Smith; four sons, Elmo, Richard and Farrel Mathews, all of Fort Smith, and Charles Mathews of Jacksonville; 17 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Nelson, Eddie and Jerry Mathews, Brandon Jaap, Kent and Tim Kamerman.
Memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritans of Central Missionary Baptist Church, 3631 Jenny Lind Road, Fort Smith, AR 72901.

Dorothy Morland
Dorothy Morland, 68, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, in a local hospital. She was a homemaker and former co-owner of Freeman’s Florist.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Morrison cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Freeman Morland of the home; three sons, Jason Morland and Chris Cox, both of Fort Smith, and Steve Cox of Houston; a sister, Helen Cali of Chesterfield, Mo.; two brothers, W.C. Berry of Palacios, Texas, and Thuri Berry of Martinez, Calif.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jim and Dwight Morland, Jason Hetherington, Andrew Cox, James Williams and John Fisher.

Robert H. “Bob” Glidewell
Robert H. “Bob” Glidewell, 85, of Fort Smith died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, in Fort Smith. He was born June 11, 1920, in Logan Hall near Booneville. He was retired from Larson & Wear Construction Co. and Glidewell Construction Co. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a retired carpenter with local union No. 71. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He was a master craftsman and his works are part of the landscape of Fort Smith. His friends and family can see his legacy for many years and to the future.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Carolan cemetery in Booneville.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Faye of Fort Smith; three sons, Dewayne Glidewell of Lavaca and Frank and John Glidewell, both of Fort Smith; two stepdaughters, Susie McFerran and Lynda McFerran Fulmer, both of Fort Smith; a stepson, John McFerran of Gig Harbor, Wash.; a sister, Juanita Geren of Fort Smith; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Greg Riley, Hobe Runion, Terry Casalman, Randy Swaim, Johnny Glidewell II, Lloyd Eacret III and Rob Todaro.
Honorary pallbearers will be Men’s Sunday school class of Immanuel Baptist Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church, 220 S. Dallas St., Fort Smith, AR 72903.

Agnes R. Walker
Agnes R. Walker, 78, of Paris died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, in Little Rock. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Paris and the Mother’s Society. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Anton and Ann Margaret Mertin Hatwig.
Rosary will be 7 p.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Paris.
Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial at St. Benedict cemetery in Subiaco under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.
She is survived by four daughters, Cathy Patterson and Linda Fairbanks, both of Paris, Louise Cox and Brenda Townsend, both of Ratcliff; four sons, Joe, Charles, John and Ed Walker, all of Ratcliff; a brother, Ernest Hatwig of Paris; 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; a niece, Loretta Fletcher of Seattle.
Pallbearers will be Harry Fletcher, Charles Nehus, Robert Smith, Clint, John and Jason Walker.
Honorary pallbearers will be Chuck and Harold, Walker, Gary Don Fairbanks, Ernest Hatwig Jr., Tony Robinson, Utah Barbee, Andy Wilhite, Daniel Patterson and Wilie Cox.

Lela Gooden
Lela Gooden, 91, of Searcy died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, in a local nursing home. She was born June 30, 1911, at Choctaw to William and Nannie C. Hunter. She grew to adulthood in Morrilton, where she received a bachelor’s degree from Harding College. She was a retired teacher, having taught at Formosa, Clinton and Carlisle. After her retirement from teaching she served as librarian for the Carlisle Public Library branch and as a reading tutor with Literacy Councils in Lonoke and White Counties.
She was a member of the West Side Church of Christ in Searcy and the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Gooden is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Benny L. Gooden and Martha of Fort Smith and Tom Ed Gooden and Denise of Terrell, Texas; four grandchildren, Maj. C. Michael Gooden, M.D., of Fayetteville, N.C., Marcus L. Gooden of Loma LInda, Calif., LeighAnn Atkins of Edmond, Okla. and Lance C. Gooden of Terrell, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Katy and Martina Gooden, both of Fayetteville, N.C. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Neta Hunter and Naomi Hunter; five nieces and nephews; many friends and thousands of former students. Her husband of 53 years, Lowell B. Gooden preceded her in death.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at West Side Church of Christ, 709 West Arch Ave. in Searcy under the direction of Roller-Daniel Funeral Home of Searcy. Burial will be at White County Memorial Gardens in Searcy.
Memorial contributions may be to Mission Fund of West Side Church of Christ, 709 W. Arch Ave., Searcy, AR 72143 or the Searcy Children’s Home, 900 North Main, Searcy, AR 72143.

Charles Edward Curbow
Charles Edward Curbow, 67, of Ratcliff died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, in Fort Smith. He was owner and operator of Curbow Trucking Company in Ratcliff and a member of First Baptist Church in Pacos, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Odel and Ellen McKeethan Curbow.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Caulksville cemetery under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.
He is survived by his wife, Wilda Jean Curbow of Ratcliff; three sons, Charles F. Curbow Jr. of Paris, Brian L. Curbow of Ratcliff and Jeffery L. Curbow of Fayetteville; four grandchildren, Kayla, Kyler, Kendra and Brooklyn Curbow.
Pallbearers will be Gary Beasley, Cecil King, Kenneth McCubbins, Trey Philmon, Mark Heft and Chris Schneider.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Chancellor Kimbrough
Chancellor Kimbrough, 78, of Fort Smith died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, in Fort Smith. He was born in Lafayette, La., on Nov. 29, 1923. He is the son of William Claire Kimbrough, a native of South Carolina, and Juliette Oakley Kimbrough, a native of Tennessee. He has two brothers, W. Bradley Kimbrough and Richard A. Kimbrough (deceased). He attended public schools in Lafayette and Southwest Louisiana State College from 1940 to 1943. He entered the Navy in World War II and served until 1946. He remained active in the Naval Reserve and retired with the rank of Captain. Following the war, he attended Hendrix College in Conway and graduated from there in 1949 with a degree in history and political science. He was married to Rebecca Jane Conatser of Ozark on Aug. 21, 1949. He obtained his law degree from Vanderbuilt University in 1953. He returned to Ozark and entered into the family business. In 1954, he moved to Fort Smith to practice law. He served as assistant attorney for Fort Smith and as deputy prosecuting attorney for Sebastian County as well as practicing later in the firm of Garner, Shaw and Kimbrough. He was admitted to practice before the Arkansas and United States Supreme Courts, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States District courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Arkansas and the United States Court of Military Appeals. He was elected Chancery Judge in 1966 for the position until it was merged into the 12th Judicial District in 1875. He continued in that position until his retirement in 1996, after 30 years on the bench. During his service, he served as president of the Arkansas Judicial Council and on various committees. He was also a member of the National Conference of State Trail Judges of the American Bar Association and became the first chairman of the State Trial Judges of the American Bar Association and became the State Trial Judge Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee. He was a member of the National Association of State Trial Judges ADR committee. He was active in the Arkansas Bar Association in developing the Arkansas Alternatives Dispute Resolution Committee. He was involved in getting legislation passed in this area and served as state chairman of the Arkansas Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee. He was active in establishing and running the Third District Trial Practice Committee.
He also belongs to the W.B. Putman American Inns of Court in Fayetteville. He was on the board of his church, a member of the Fort Smith Chamber of commerce, a recipient of the Judicial Council Community Service Award, a member of the board of Sebastian County Senior Citizens Association, past president of the Fort Smith Heritage Foundation, board member of West Arkansas Alzheimer’s Association, board member of Methodist Nursing Home and Village Inc., member of Sebastian County Volunteer Attorneys program, board member of Project Compassion Inc., as well as the Gathering on the Arkansas historical program and the Naval Reserve Association and a member of the Naval Academy Blue and Gold program and the Fleet Reserve Association. He was also a member of the National cemetery Acquisition Committee. He was the chairman of the Arkansas Supreme Court Child Support Committee and several Masonic Bodies as well as Harbor House Board, Fort Smith Art Center, Fort Smith Trolley Museum, the Museum of History and in the past engaged in the practice of law and mediation in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca, six children, Warren Carter and his wife, Yolanda of Fort Smith, James Bryan of Fort Smith and Kevin Alexander of Fort Smith, Karen Elizabeth Stitsworth and her husband, Michael of West Lafayette, Ind., Beverly Claire Berger and her husband, Patrick, of Fayetteville, Sarah Jane Kimbrough of Fort Smith; nine grandchildren, Brent Alexander Berger and Emily Claire Berger, both of Oklahoma City, Erika Jane Berger, Erin Juliette Berger and Elizabeth Berger, all of Fayetteville, Jonathan Carter Kimbrough of Fort Smith, Allison Rebecca Stitsworth and Michael Scott Stitsworth, both of West Lafayette, Ind., and Madeleine Alexandra Kimbrough of Little Rock.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be officers with the Sebastian County Sheriffs Department.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Sebastian, Crawford and Franklin Counties Bar Association.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Zola Johnson
VIAN — Zola C. Irish Johnson, 88, of Vian died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, in Roland. She attended and graduated from Langston University in Langston, Okla. She taught at Douglas School in Vian, Shady Grove School in Shady Grove and Boyd School in Muldrow. She was the widow of Mose Johnson Sr.
Funeral will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Mallory Funeral Home Chapel in Sallisaw with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by a son, Mose D. Johnson of Fort Smith; two sisters, Naomi Irish of Los Angeles and May Odis Dickson of Vian; two brothers, Luther Irish of Vian and Rudolph Irish of Kansas City, Mo.; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Michael Nelson, Julius Dickson and Danny Pfeiffer.
The body may be viewed at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from noon to 8 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

James Foltz
CLARKSVILLE — James R. Foltz, 86, of Clarksville died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, in Clarksville. He served in the Army during World War II, a special engineering detachment at Oak Ridge, Tenn., was a chemical engineer and retired from Argonne National Laboratory in 1971 and participated in many community activitives.
Memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home of Clarksville.
He is survived by his wife, Elene; a daughter, Norma Hogan of Clarksville; a son Charles F. Foltz of Clarksville; and a sister, Anna C. Foltz of Erlanger, Ky.

Edward Joerger
DALLAS — Edward Frank Joerger of Dallas, formerly of Altus, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, in Dallas. He was born Dec. 6, 1925, in Altus. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a retired auto worker for General Motors and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Rosary will be 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church before Mass.
Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial at St. Mary’s cemetery in Altus under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.
He is survived by a sister, Agnes Thomas of Altus; a brother, Andrew Joerger of Covina, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Campbell, Charles Stacy, Tom Timmerson, Randy Pointer, Jim and Raymond Deuster.

Myrtle Overby
KNOXVILLE — Myrtle S. Overby, 94, of Knoxville died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, in a local nursing home. She was born Oct. 16, 1907, in Blaine, Ore. She was a 50-year member of Lamar Chapter No. 516 Order of Eastern Star, a Baptist and the widow of Vaden Overby.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hardwicke Funeral Home Chapel in Clarksville with burial at Lamar cemetery in Lamar.
She is survived by two daughters, Magadalene Kirkpatrick of Knoxville and Betty Pitts of Clarksville; two sons, John Overbey of Knoxville and Charles Overbey of Brea, Calif.; a sister, Ruby Sykes of Cave Junction, Ore.; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Kris Paxson, Mike, Dale, James and George Overby and Dave Rains.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

G.S. Council
CHARLESTON — G. S. “June” Council, 80, of Charleston died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, in Booneville. He was born June 1, 1922, in Ratcliff. He was a World War II veteran, a retired fire control instrument repairman and was a Protestant. He was the widower of Lenora Council.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Smith Mortuary Chapel in Charleston with burial at Garden of Memories cemetery in Charleston.
He is survived by two daughters, Judy Sellars of Shawnee, Okla., and Mary Sullivent of Edmont, Okla.; a son. L.R. Council of Ratcliff; two sisters, Eula Mae Spicer of Scranton and Norma Brown of Ratcliff; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jerry and Kerry Brown, Jimmy Don Spicer, John David Council, Brian Braly and Michael Sellars.
