Floyd J. Black, 86, of Van Buren died Saturday, March 22, 2003, in his home. He was a retired farmer and a member of Shibley Baptist Church and the widower of Bonnie Black.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
He is survived by two sons, Gary and Larry Black, both of Van Buren; a sister, Dorothy Willmon of Van Buren; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Jim and Chad Willmon.

Shelby Haller
BOONEVILLE — Shelby Dean Haller, 65, of Booneville died Sunday, March 23, 2003, in a local nursing home. He was a Navy veteran and a Baptist.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Roberts Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Booneville with burial at Bethel cemetery in Russellville.
He is survived by three sisters, Joyce Gillespie and Alma Henson, both of Booneville, and Vivian Kirby of Russellville.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Kennedy, David and Danny Henson, Danny and Jon Kirby and Mike McLemore.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pauline Malone
Pauline Walden Smith Malone, 90, of Fort Smith died Sunday, March 23, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was born May 5, 1912, in Cecil. She was a homemaker and a Protestant.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Smith Mortuary Chapel in Charleston with burial at Cecil cemetery.
She is survived by two daughters, Betty Wells of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Daphne Smith in Lawton, Okla.; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Elmer Smallen
MULDROW — Elmer E. Smallen, 51, of Muldrow died Sunday, March 23, 2003, in Fort Smith. He was a welder for Whirlpool for 20 years, served in the Marine Corps and was a Baptist.
Memorial services are pending. Arrangements are under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Gracie; two daughters, Gina and Kaylah Smallen, both of Muldrow; two sons, Charles Smallen of Muldrow and Shawn Smallen of Billings, Mont.; his mother, Ruby Masterson of Muldrow; two sisters; four brothers; and seven grandchildren.

Diane Dulaney
Diane Marie Dulaney, 35, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was born March 28, 1967, in Fort Smith. She was a member of First Church of God in Christ in Fort Smith, a nurse’s aide for Crawford County Memorial Hospital and a 1984 graduate of Northside High School.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Church of God in Christ with burial at Washington cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Carl; a daughter, Shannelle Clardy of Fort Smith; a son, Jarvis Clardy of Fort Smith; her parents, Wesley and Bertha Clardy of Fort Smith; four sisters, Priscilla Williams and Donna Clardy, both of Roland, Beverly and Delisha Clardy, both of Fort Smith; six brothers, Bobby, Wesley, David, Andrew and Tyrone Clardy, all of Fort Smith, and Jerry Clardy of Roland.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Clardy, Dwight Williams, Kevin Johnson, Eugene Fisher, Dewayne and LG Taylor.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Embry Scott Shoemaker
Embry Scott Shoemaker, 86, of Fort Smith died Friday, March 21, 2003, in her home. She was born Dec. 30, 1916, in Little Rock to Dr. and Mrs. Homer (Gertrude) Scott. After graduating from Little Rock High School, she studied for one year at the University of Neuchatel in Neuchatel, Switzerland before attending Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Mass.
On Oct. 30, 1936, she married John Earl Shoemaker. The spent their early married life in Youngstown, Ohio, and Detroit and moved to Fayetteville in 1946 when Mr. Shoemaker began working for the University of Arkansas. In 1955, they moved to Fort Smith where Mr. Shoemaker served as rector of Saint John’s Episcopal Church. They moved to Russellville in 1967 after Mr. Shoemaker answered the call of All Saints’ Episcopal Church. In 1978, they lived several months in France before retiring to a family farm near Atkins. They returned to Fort Smith in 1996.
Mrs. Shoemaker was a member of the Colonial Dames Society. She enjoyed volunteer work for organizations such as Heifer Project, Laubach Literacy, the Russellville Public Schools and the Episcopal Church. She also served as a foster parent in Pope County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Shoemaker, who died Aug. 31, 2002, and by one daughter, Katherine Embry Shoemaker, who died in 1995. She is survived by three daughters, Gertrude “Trudy” Bunge of Wilmette, Ill., Eleanor Foltz of Fort Smith and Audley Hall of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren, Jonathan Bunge, William Bunge, Katherine Bunge, Henry Foltz, Embry Foltz Curry, Joanna Hall and Scott Hall; and four great grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Fort Smith with a 4 p.m. committal service at Mount Holly cemetery in Little Rock under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Jonathan Bunge, William Bunge, Henry Foltz, Michael Curry, Scott Hall and Jason Hall.
Memorials may be made to any Episcopal church or to any charity of the donor’s choice.

Orpha Lee McNabb
Orpha Lee McNabb, 75, of Hamilton, Mont., formerly of Wister, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003. She was born April 14, 1927. She was the widow of the late Richard McNabb. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilburn and Everette Parker and her parents, Martha and Lloyd Parker.
A memorial service was held Friday, March 14, 2003 at Cornerstone Bible Church in Hamilton, Mont. Arrangements are under the direction of Dowling Funeral Home of Hamilton, Mont.
She is survived by two brothers, Hershel Parker of Santa Monica, Calif., and Richard Parker of Quincy, Calif.; five children, Carol Richardson of Fort Smith, Danny McNabb of Quincy, Calif., Donna DeMyer of Hamilton, Mont., Bonnie Ruby of Newington, Conn. and Rodney McNabb of Montgomery Creek, Calif. and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Charley O. Pursell
Mr. Charley O. Pursell, 95, of Van Buren died Monday, March 24, 2003, in his home. He was born Sept. 18, 1907, in St. Paul to the late Rev. William Pursell and his wife, Emma.
Mr. Pursell married Tosie Lane in 1938 and had celebrated 64 wedding anniversaries with her. He worked for Shipley Baking Company for more than 40 years. Mr. Pursell was past member of the Van Buren School Board and was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Bond Special. He enjoyed farming, gardening and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
Mr. Pursell is survived by his wife, Tosie; three daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and John Seftner of Van Buren, Marlene and Steve Pfeifer of Danville and Sharon and Dennis Day of Sallisaw; a son, Jimmy Pursell of Van Buren; three sisters, Essie Weldon and Florene Armstrong, both of Van Buren, and Bessie Cole of Fort Smith, also survive him. Mr. Pursell was the proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren, Gary Johnson of New York, John Johnson of San Francisco, David Johnson and Amy Dodson, both of Van Buren, T.J. Seftner and Shanna McCarty, both of Fort Smith, Wade Pursell of Houston, Randy Pursell of Fayetteville, Whitney Pfeifer of Russellville and Sandi McCarty of Sallisaw; and four great-grandchildren, Nathan and Abby Johnson of Van Buren, Tanner Pursell of Fayetteville and McKayla Dodson of Van Buren.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Edgar E. Bethell
Edgar E. Bethell, 85, of Fort Smith died Sunday, March 2, 2003, in Fort Smith. Mr. Bethell is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rose Hollis Bethell; three children, Delia Bethell of Sacramento and her husband, Gene Gandy, Bruce Bethell and his wife, Suzanne of Fort Smith and Barbara Bethell Hill of Fort Smith; two granddaughters, Amanda Lawrence and her husband, Josh Lawrence of New Haven, Conn. and Leslie Bethell of Louisville, Ky.; and one great-granddaughter, Eleanora Joanne Lawrence. Mr. Bethell graduated with honors from University of Arkansas Law School in 1941, and was admitted to the bar at that time. He began his law practice in Fort Smith in 1947. He served in the Army in World War II. He was a 33rd degree Mason, a lifetime member of the Blue Lodge Sebastian No. 706, the sovereign bodies of the Red Cross of Constantine and the Western Arkansas Scottish Rite Bodies, past Venerable Master of the Lodge of Perfection of the Scottish Rite and assistant inspector general of Western Arkansas Scottish Rite Bodies. He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he served on the administrative board and as chairman of the Board of Trustees and had been a greeter for 35 years, served as president of the Noon Exchange Club and was selected as the Salvation Army Outstanding Citizen in 1961. Mr. Bethell was chairman of the board of Fort Smith Junior College in the early 1960s, as well as a member of the Emeritus Board at Westark Community College, both predecessor to University of Arkansas at Fort Smith. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, an avid tennis player, fisherman and hunter. He was one of the founders of the Fort Smith Racquet Club. In 1996 he served on the committee of 100 to study and implement a change in the city government of Fort Smith.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. today at the Family Life Center at First United Methodist Church with a 10:15 interment at Woodlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.

C.L. Vest
C.L. Vest, 55, of Charleston died Sunday, March 23, 2003, in his home. He was born July 16, 1947, in Fort Smith. He was a retired dairy farmer. He served on the AMPI state and region board of directors and was a member of the Mount Hope Missionary Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Hope Missionary Baptist Church with burial at Garden of Memories in Charleston under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston. Officiating will be the Rev. Jeremy Flanagan, the Rev. Steven Sewell and the Rev. Michael Bright.
He is survived by his wife, Linda of the home; three daughters, Missy Moore and son-in-law, Jim of Charleston, Tina Wade of Ozark and Angie Haney and son-in-law, Steve of Charleston; a son, Cory Vest and daughter-in-law, Alicia of Charleston; eight grandchildren, Morgan, Chelsea and Clint Moore, Ben and Ty Wade, Justin and Dalton Haney and Kaitlyn Vest.
Pallbearers will be T.K. and Scott Ballard, Kenneth Vest, Ryan Rachuy, Robert Johnson, Chad Mullinax and Aaron and Charles Jackson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Travis Ballard, Jim McCartney, Tudy Loughridge, James Hammond and Charles Miesner.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Irene Toth
Irene Toth, 82, of Fort Smith died Sunday, March 23, 2003, in a local nursing home. She was born Feb. 24, 1921, in West Fork. She was a homemaker and farmer, a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the widow of the late Alex J. Toth.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Borengasser and husband, Gene of Fort Smith; a son, Tom Toth and wife, Cindy of Tulsa; six grandchildren, Johanna Paladino, Stephen Borengasser, Lisa Belue, Matthew and Elizabeth Toth and Sarah Knott; four great-grandchildren, Taylor Paladino, Hannah Johnston, Isaiah and Savannah Belue.
Pallbearers will be family members.

CLARKSVILLE — Charles William “Bill” Garland, 63, of Clarksville died Monday, March 24, 2003, in his home. He was retired from Clarksville Light and Water and a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Clarksville with burial at Minnow Creek cemetery in Lamar under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home of Clarksville.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; two daughters, Shelly Bean and Terri Clinebell, both of Clarksville; a sister, Lillie Dixon of Clarksville; a brother, Bob Garland of Burleson, Texas; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Ashlock, Norman Fortney, Darrell Wheeler, Clayton Caldwell, Bill Stewart and Cathy Stalcup.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Phyllis Collins
CLARKSVILLE — Phyllis M. Collins, 81, of Clarksville died Monday, March 24, 2003, in Clarksville. She was born Aug. 15, 1921, in Waldenburg. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the widow of Roy Collins.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Hardwicke Funeral Home Chapel in Clarksville. The body was cremated.
She is survived by three daughters, Amanda Kilcrease and Lynda Hickenbottom, both of Clarksville and Patricia Horn of Harrisonville, Mo.; a sister, Claudine Reiman of Waldenburg; a brother, Bob Frank of Phoenix; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
