Norma Johnson
CLARKSVILLE — Norma Kilcrease Johnson, 92, of Clarksville died Monday, March 24, 2003, in a Little Rock hospital. She was born July 8, 1910, in Clarksville. She was the widow of Harry Johnson.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. today at Oakland cemetery in Clarksville under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home of Clarksville.
She is survived by two sons, Don Johnson of Clarksville and Alan Johnson of Little Rock; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Billye Ligon
CLARKSVILLE — Billye M. Ligon, 71, of Clarksville died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, in her home. She was born July 30, 1931, in Oklahoma City. She was a former employee of McKession Drug Wholesale Company and a member of Grace Lutheran Church. She was the widow of Robert Ligon.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church with burial at Mount Vernon cemetery in Clarksville under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home of Clarksville.
She is survived by a son, Larry Bell of Houston; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Kenny Yates, Bill Rains, Harold Lewis, Don Langdon, J.T. Collins and Jerry Holt.
The family will visit with friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Arleene Powers
POTEAU — Arleene Olds Powers, 64, of Poteau died Tuesday, March 25, 2003. She was born Aug. 29, 1938, in Paris, Tenn. She attended David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tenn., where she received her degree in elementary education. She was a homemaker, a member of Church of Christ and a Bible class teacher.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Poteau Church of Christ under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
She is survived by her husband, Philip; three sons, Mike Powers of Springfield, Mo., Steve Powers of Harrison and Jason Powers of St. Louis; and eight grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Christeson Funeral Home.
Embry Scott Shoemaker
Embry Scott Shoemaker, 86, of Fort Smith died Friday, March 21, 2003, in her home. She was born Dec. 30, 1916, in Little Rock to Dr. and Mrs. Homer (Gertrude) Scott. After graduating from Little Rock High School, she studied for one year at the University of Neuchatel in Neuchatel, Switzerland before attending Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Mass.
On Oct. 30, 1936, she married
John Earl Shoemaker. The spent their early married
life in Youngstown, Ohio, and Detroit and moved to Fayetteville in 1946 when Mr. Shoemaker began working for the University of Arkansas. In 1955, they moved to Fort Smith where Mr. Shoemaker served as rector of Saint John’s Episcopal Church. They moved to Russellville in 1967 after Mr. Shoemaker answered the call of All Saints’ Episcopal Church. In 1978, they lived several months in France before retiring to a family farm near Atkins. They returned to Fort Smith in 1996.
Mrs. Shoemaker was a member of the Colonial Dames Society. She enjoyed volunteer work for organizations such as Heifer Project, Laubach Literacy, the Russellville Public Schools and the Episcopal Church. She also served as a foster parent in Pope County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Shoemaker, who died Aug. 31, 2002, and by one daughter, Katherine Embry Shoemaker, who died in 1995. She is survived by three daughters, Gertrude “Trudy” Bunge of Wilmette, Ill., Eleanor Foltz of Fort Smith and Audley Hall of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren, Jonathan Bunge, William Bunge, Katherine Bunge, Henry Foltz, Embry Foltz Curry, Joanna Hall and Scott Hall; and four great grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Fort Smith with a 4 p.m. committal service at Mount Holly cemetery in Little Rock under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Jonathan Bunge, William Bunge, Henry Foltz, Michael Curry, Scott Hall and Jason Hall.

Irene Toth
Irene Toth, 82, of Fort Smith died Sunday, March 23, 2003, in a local nursing home. She was born Feb. 24, 1921, in West Fork. She was a homemaker, a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the widow of the late Alex J. Toth.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Borengasser and husband, Gene of Fort Smith; a son, Tom Toth and wife, Cindy of Tulsa; six grandchildren, Johanna Paladino, Stephen Borengasser, Lisa Belue, Matthew and Elizabeth Toth and Sarah Knott; four great-grandchildren, Taylor Paladino, Hannah Johnston and Isaiah and Savannah Belue.

In loving memory of Jenifer Nicole Karnes, age 17, a resident of Brownwood Life Center in Fort Smith for 15 years, died Nov. 4, 2002, in Sparks Regional Medical Center due to a rare disease, Trisomy 13. Predeceased by her grandfather, Stirman Warren Karnes of Fort Smith; great-grandparents, Stirman Karnes and Gladys of Cane Hill; Marcus Clark and Birdie West Mason of Prairie Grove; her aunt, Jennifer Sue Karnes, which was her namesake.

Virginia Piercefield
Virginia Piercefield, 77, of Alma died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, in a local hospital. She was formerly of Mulberry and was of the Pentecostal faith. She was the widow of Albert Piercefield.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at New cemetery in Mulberry under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by a son, Gary Dale Piercefield of Dermott; a brother, Russell Napier of Ozark; three grandsons, Chancey Piercefield of Mountainburg and Justin and Joshua Piercefield, both of Mulberry; and a cousin, Kelly Phillips of Columbus, Ohio.
Elmer E. Smallen
Elmer E. Smallen, 51, of Muldrow died Sunday, March 23, 2003, in Fort Smith. He was a welder for Whirlpool for 20 years, served in the Marine Corps and was a Baptist.
Graveside memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Gracie of the home; two daughters, Gina Louise and Kaylah Rayne Smallen, both of Muldrow; two sons, Charles Eugene Smallen of Muldrow and Shawn Timothy Smallen of Billings, Mont.; his mother, Ruby Masterson of Muldrow; two sisters; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Sarah Vaughn of Muldrow; four brothers; and seven grandchildren, Destiny, Dillon and David Smallen, all of Fort Smith, Chase Hughes of Greenwood, Shawn Smallen II of Fort Smith and Jacob and Benjamin Smallen of Billings, Mont.
Arthur Alexander Sharum Jr.
Arthur Alexander Sharum Jr. of Fort Smith was born Aug. 24, 1922, and died March 20, 2003, in Fort Smith. Arthur is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Alexander Sharum Sr., and Anna Heim Sharum and his brother, Milton “Buddy” Sharum.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lorene Kremers Sharum; a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Ron Key of Greenwood; three sons, Gary and wife Melinda Sharum of Roland, Richard and wife Teri Sharum of Booneville and Kevin Sharum of Greenwood. In addition, Mr. Sharum had seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Arthur is survived by his six sisters, Kay Laughon of Placerville, Calif., Dorothy Busco of Hayward, Calif., Helen Swanson of Freemont, Calif., Loraine Stolz of Sacramento, Calif., Rita Rizzo of Hayward, Calif., and Barbara Glover of Clarksdale, Miss.; and a brother, Raymond “Sonny” Sharum of Fort Smith.
He was a lifelong resident of Fort Smith and was retired from Harding Glass Co., the U.S. Park Service and was owner of Phoenix Village Laundry in Fort Smith.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fort Smith and the St. Sabina and Mary Catholic Church in Jenny Lind.
Arthur served his country in the Navy in World War II and the 
Korean War. He was a combat veteran, earning 11 battle stars in several large Naval actions in the Pacific during World War II.
He loved his family, his religion and his country. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and a loyal friend who taught his family the value of friendship, hard work and honesty.
Rosary was held March 23 at Fentress Mortuary Chapel in Fort Smith.
Mass was held March 24 at St. Boniface Catholic Church conducted by Father Henry Mischkowiuski.
Pallbearers were David Smith, Rick Sisco, Neal and Alex Sharum, Josh Allen, Donnie, Charlie and Mike Kremers.

Georgiann Cox
Georgiann Cox, 52, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker and a employee at Interstate Inn in Roland.
No formal service will be held. The body will be cremated under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by two daughters, Layla Cox of Fort Smith and Tonyi Marney of Royce City, Texas; a son, Larry Townsend of Mesquite, Texas; her mother, Ada Kerr of Youngstown, Ohio; five sisters; one brother; and six grandchildren.
Ardella Willis
KIBLER — Ardella Willis, 73, of Kibler died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, in a local nursing home. She was retired from Fort Smith Rim & Bow and a member of Alma Full Gospel Outreach Church. She was the widow of Vurn Willis.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Hogan cemetery near Clarksville.
She is survived by four daughters, Jean Wilkey and Mary Bowles, both of Kibler, Sue Bowles of Alma and Brenda Rockwood of Van Buren; four sons, Claude and James Willis, both of Kibler, Everett Willis of Ozone and Bill Willis of Van Buren; two sisters, Imogene Hobsn of Van Buren and Ilee Wilmon of Alma; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.

BOONEVILLE — Effie Humphreys, 78, of Booneville died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, in her home.

She is survived by three daughters, Shirley Cleave of Dover, Rada Mays of Ola and Patricia Taylor of Booneville; four sons, Hold Ensey of Sallisaw, Ronnie Ensey of Muskogee, Okla., Bobby Ensey of Alma and Gatty Ensey of Oklahoma; 21 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

ALMA — Virginia Piercefield, 77, of Alma, formerly of Mulberry, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, in a local hospital. She was of the Pentecostal faith and the widow of Albert Piercefield.

Louanna Smith
PAULS VALLEY, Okla. — Louanna Smith, 69, of Pauls Valley, Okla., died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, in Oklahoma City. She was born Dec. 12, 1933, in Fort Smith. She grew up and attended school in Fort Smith where she graduated, was at Southern Oklahoma Resource Center for 28 years and was a women and girls softball coach.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Wooster Funeral Home Chapel in Pauls Valley, Okla. with burial at Mount Olivet cemetery.
She is survived by a daughter, Sondra Tucker of Pauls Valley, Okla.; a son, Guy Smith of Rush Springs, Okla.; seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Kenneth Brannon
TULSA — Kenneth O. Brannon, 55, of Tulsa, formerly of Spiro, died Monday, March 24, 2003, in a Tulsa hospital. He was a 1965 graduate of Spiro High School, received his associates degree from Poteau Junior College, bachelor’s degree from Northeastern Oklahoma State University and master’s degree in education administration from Southeastern State University, coached high school basketball at Arkoma, Boswell, Bennington, Eastwood Baptist School, Tulsa Emmanuel Christian School and Wright Christian Academy in Tulsa for a total of 26 years.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Eastwood Baptist Church in Tulsa under the direction of Moore’s Eastlawn of Tulsa.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly; two sons, Greg of Bartlesville, Okla., and Sean of Broken Arrow, Okla.; his parents, Chester and Ruby Brannon of Spiro; a sister, Diane Hulsey of Fort Smith; two brothers, Andy Brannon of Danville and Geoff Brannon of Pocola.
