Frances Gustin of Van Buren died Sunday, April 27, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was a charter member of Delta Cappa Gamma and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Van Buren and the Retired School Teachers Association.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Edwards Van Alma Funeral Home in Van Buren with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by a sister, Kathleen Boroughs of Van Buren.
The body may be viewed from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Knights Templar Eye Foundation.

Marion Upchurch
Marion Maude Upchurch, 95, of Fort Smith died Friday, April 25, 2003, in a local hospital. She was a retired Fort Smith public school teacher and a member of Southside Baptist Church. She was a member of both the Arkansas and Fort Smith retired teachers associations.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. today at Forest Park cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 505 N. Parkway, Memphis, TN 38105.

Sibyl Griffin
KEMAH, Texas — Sibyl Mae Griffin, 88, of Kemah, Texas, formerly of Fort Smith, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, in Kemah. She was born July 16, 1914, in Batesville. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Smith, a homemaker and the widow of Elbert Griffin.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Roselawn cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Janet Skelton of Kemah; a son, Randy Griffin of Mountainburg; and two grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 11 a.m. until funeral time Tuesday.

Hattie Bruce
PARK HILL, Okla. — Hattie S. Bruce, 71, of Park Hill, Okla., died Thursday, April 24, 2003, in her home. She was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Assembly of God in Akins with burial at Blackjack cemetery northeast of Sallisaw under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
She is survived by her husband, Carroll; two daughters, Linda Cuozzo of Muldrow and Glenda Hixson of Dallas; a son, Keith Bruce of Park Hill; two sisters, Ruby Shamblin and Wilma Corbit, both of Muldrow; a brother, Herman Frasier of Muldrow; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Steve and Ronnie Frasier, Jimmy Rhodes, David and Paul Parsons and David Philpot.

Virgie Thomas
MENA — Virgie May Thomas, 88, of Mena died Saturday, April 26, 2003, in Mena. She was born Jan. 25, 1915, in Boles. She taught school at Boles, Parks, Black Fork and Cove. She was a member of the Midway Baptist Church in Cove.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Beasley-Wood Funeral Home Chapel in Mena with burial at Hawkins cemetery in Parks.
She is survived by four daughters, Dixie Dohrn of Lonsdale, Candace Casey and Rose Fairless, both of Cove, and Anita Thomas of Alma; two sons, Marion Thomas of Little Rock and Thomas Thomas of Fallon, Nev.; two brothers, Cecil Hayes of Conway and Ed Hayes of Kansas City, Kan.; 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Eugene Floyd Little
Eugene Floyd Little, 83, of Fort Smith died Sunday, April 27, 2003, in Fort Smith. He was born March 9, 1920, in Lavaca to Floyd and Jessie Little. He spent his childhood in northwest Arkansas and graduated in the class of 1938 from Farmington High School. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Maxine Little, and his second wife, Reba Lee Little.
He was a Pearl Harbor survivor who was serving in the Navy on the USS Maryland during the attack. After retiring from the Navy in 1959, he was a real estate broker in the Fort Smith area and a loan officer at First Federal Savings. He was a faithful member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church, the Pearl Harbor Survivor Association and the Western Arkansas Scottish Rite. He loved to spend time in his garden and feed the birds.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Grand Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Stark officiating. Graveside service will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Baptist Ford cemetery in Greenland with the Rev. Tommy Hinson officiating.
He is survived by his wife, Rena B. Little of the home; four sons, Michael Little and wife Becky of Chesapeake, Va., Darrell Little of San Diego, Calif., Dwight Little of Van Buren and Doug Little and wife Stacey of Van Buren; a stepson, Waldo White and wife Cathey of Fort Smith; two daughters, Dorothy Jones and husband Larry of Golden, Colo., and Elaine Brown and husband Mike of Brookings, S.D.; a stepdaughter, Saundra Lockhart and husband Jim of Van Buren; two brothers, Bobby Little of Seattle and Harmon Little of Granite City, Ill.; two sisters, Belle Overstreet of Bentonville and Jo Hinson of Rogers; nine grandchildren, Crystal Maher of Tyler, Texas, Laurie David of San Antonio, Geoffrey Little of Nashville, Aaron Little of Chesapeake, Barrett and Payton Little, both of Van Buren, Whitney and Hunter Brown, both of Brookings, and Caroline Little of Fayetteville; and two great-grandchildren, Cody and Carson Maher of Tyler.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Henry Oliver, Andy Lockhart, James Goddard, Ed Lisle, George White and Charles Surratt.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or Grand Avenue Baptist Church.

Jimmy Wayne Thompson Jr.
Jimmy Wayne Thompson Jr., 32, of Pocola died Sunday, April 27, 2003, in a local hospital. He was a painter for Travelers Contracting and Painting Co. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Willis and Ruby Thompson and Willie and Inez Brand.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lighthouse Pentecostal Church of God in Pocola with burial at Macedonia cemetery in Pocola under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
He is survived by a daughter, Brianna Thompson of Van Buren; a son, Austin Thompson of Arkoma; his parents, Jim and Pauline Thompson of Pocola; a sister and brother-in-law, Sondra and Wayne Stites of Pocola; a niece, Brittany Jenkins of Pocola; a nephew, Devin Stites of Pocola; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ernest Daniel Burgess
Ernest Daniel Burgess, 86, of Van Buren died Friday, April 25, 2003, in Van Buren. He was a retired mechanic for Ryder Truck Rentals. He served in the Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura “Bess” Burgess; his parents, Tom and Molly Burgess; two sisters, Ila Mae Cameron, and Naomi Rapier; a grandson, Richard Bagley; and a daughter-in-law, Sharon Burgess. He also was a member of North Park Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home in Van Buren with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Jane Burgess and Johnny and Edna Burgess, all of Van Buren; four sisters, Robbie Toothaker of Van Buren, Peggy Baber of Bella Vista, Roxie Moore of Poteau and Geneva Daugherty of Tulare, Calif.; a brother, Joe Burgess of Fort Smith; six grandchildren, Mike and Jeff Burgess, Carl Bagley, Judy Lewis, Angela Carter and Tammy Shelby; three step-grandchildren, Kelli Owens and Jody and Scott Mosby; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Carter, Dustin Green, Arthur Lewis, Gary and A.J. Shelby, Les Toothaker and Rick Baber.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Edna Jean Russell Jenkins
Edna Jean Russell Jenkins, 91, of Magazine died Sunday, April 27, 2003, in Booneville. She was a retired school secretary for Magazine Public Schools and a member of Magazine Garden Club, Extension Homemakers and the Retired Teachers Association. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed sewing, needlework and quilting her whole life. Since her retirement, she quilted every Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Magazine. Those Tuesdays spent with her friends were fulfilling and gave her great pleasure. She was a longtime member of the Magazine United Methodist Church and served as board secretary. She was born Oct. 9, 1911, in Franklin County. She loved taking care of her grandchildren when they were small, and visiting with her great-grandchildren. In her later years, she took great delight in piecing a quilt for each of her children and grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Magazine with burial at Old Union cemetery in Magazine under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Booneville.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James Arless Jenkins; her parents, Henry and Minnie Russell; her son, James Russell “Buddy” Jenkins; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Ann Jenkins; three brothers and one sister.
She is survived by a daughter, Jennie Jenkins of Magazine; a son, Henry A. Jenkins and daughter-in-law Louise of Magazine; two sisters, Mary Gilbreath of Greenwood and Katie Sue Sutherland of Ozark; three grandchildren, Steven Jenkins and wife Connie of Magazine, Jay Jenkins and wife Summer of Greenwood and Sarah Smith and husband Andrew of Booneville; and four great-grandchildren, Anessa, Hannah, Jillian and Jada Jenkins.
Pallbearers will be Steve and Jay Jenkins, Andy Smith, Jimmy Don Kirk, Ray Gilbreath and Dan Jones.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Angela Uptmoor Rowlett
Angela Uptmoor Rowlett, 97, of Barling died Saturday in Barling. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Fort Smith and past president of Catholic Business Women and Credit Women’s Breakfast Club. She also was a member of Catholic Daughters and Keenagers. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Uptmoor, five sisters and one brother.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Christ the King Catholic Church in Fort Smith with burial at Calvary cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne and her husband Joe Nolte of Fort Smith; eight grandchildren, Dr. Janet Ayers Wentworth, Nancy Licht and Maribeth Hirte, all of Phoenix, Steve Nolte, Ann Dunn and Rick Nolte, all of Fort Smith, Lynda Beauchamp of Bend, Ore., and Pat Nolte of Houston; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and her faithful caregiver, Bertha Reid.
Pallbearers will be Steve, Rick, Pat and Jay Nolte, Courtney Dunn, Jim Wentworth and Jody Ayers.
The family will greet friends from 2:30 to 3 p.m. today at Christ the King Church.

Lou Ella Harris
Lou Ella Harris, 86, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, in Oklahoma City. She was born Jan. 25, 1917, in Natural Dam, the daughter of W.S. and Mary Tennessee Hyatt.
She married Isaiah Newton “Gabe” Harris in 1939 in Figure Five and lived in Fort Smith until three years ago, when she moved to Yukon, Okla., to live with her daughter Wanda and husband Nick Labbait. A member of the North 50th Street Church of Christ since the early 1960s, Lou was a homemaker for most of her life and devoted herself to her family and to God. She set a legacy for her family to always follow and they will forever thank her for blessing their lives.
She is survived by five daughters, Betty Best and husband Bill of Lowell, Wanda Labbait and husband Nick of Yukon, Rita Walker and husband Cliff of Hays, Kan., Patsy Holzman and husband Don of Hot Springs Village and Jerry Davis of Oklahoma City, a forever daughter; and two sons, Donald Harris and wife Lisa of Fort Smith and Earl Harris of Lowell. Lou was also blessed with 20 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Preceding Lou Ella in death were her husband Isaiah Newton “Gabe” Harris in 1974; one daughter, Judy Shepard in 2002; and two brothers, Tom and Jesse Hyatt.
Visitation will be available for friends and relatives at Ocker-Putman Funeral Home on Jenny Lind Road Tuesday Tuesday and also on Wednesday morning. Funeral services have been set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the North 50th Street Church of Christ. Burial will be at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.

James Hollister
James Hollister, 87, of Huntington died Sunday, April 27, 2003, in his home. He was retired from General Electric in Fort Smith, a Navy veteran of World War II, an active member of the Huntington United Methodist Church for 72 years, and served many years with the Mansfield-Huntington Fire Department. Many people knew Jim as the author of “Life from the Hilltop,” an article he wrote weekly for the Mansfield Citizen for more than 20 years.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Huntington United Methodist Church with burial at Huntington cemetery under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lucille Hollister of the home; one daughter, Brenda Basham and husband Dale of Lees Summit, Mo.; two granddaughters, Stephanie Gavin and husband Stafford of St. Louis and Laura Frees and husband Karl of Harrisonville, Mo.; two great-granddaughters, Claire and Charlotte Gavin; and two great-grandsons, Henry and George Frees.
The body may be viewed from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Carl Humphrey, Dean Bray, Rod Rupe, Joe McKown, Stafford Gavin and Karl Frees.

Harvey H. Wells
Harvey H. Wells, age 80, passed from this life Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, after a lengthy illness. He was a member of Bluff Avenue Baptist Church where he was honored to serve as a deacon, Sunday school director for many years. He was a Gideon until his health prevented any activity. He served our country in World War II in the Navy. He retired from Sparks Hospital after 30 years as head chef.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rossie; four sons, Curtis Wells of Jonesboro, Ga., William Jay Wells of Fort Smith, Kenneth Wells of Fort Worth, Texas, and Harvey O. Wells of Van Buren; three brothers, J.C. Wells of Joliet, Ill., George Wells of Dalhart, Texas, and Wayne Wells of Heavener; six granddaughters and one grandson; and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Loren Bowman, Tom and Jerry Hicks, Bobby Winters, Timothy Wells and Ralph Williams.
The family will visit with friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lillie Mae Davis
Lillie Mae Davis, 81, of Heavener died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, in Poteau. She was a resident of Heavener since 1973.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Memorial Park in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
She is survived by two daughters, Claudia Sue Davis Boyd of Longview, Texas, and Maggie Ellen Davis of Idaho Falls, Idaho; two sons, Leon Earl Davis and wife, Pat of Longview, Texas, and Bruce Alan Davis of Heavener; two sisters, Alma Morris of Overton, Texas, and Allene Pack of Murrieta, Calif.; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
