William D. Smalley
William D. Smalley, 78, of Mulberry died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, in his home. He was a retired police officer with Claremore, Okla., Police Department, a member of American Legion Post No. 149, the National Law Enforcement Association, VFW, Disabled American Veterans Association and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at New cemetery in Mulberry under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Mulberry.
He is survived by two daughters, Gail Turner of Mulberry and Gayla McKenzie and husband, Wesley of Claremore, Okla.; a son, David Smalley and wife, Cheryl of Mulberry; three sisters, Pandora Frazier, Mary Sue Larimore and Patricia Swearingin, all of Mulberry; two brothers, Ernest Smalley of Mulberry and Jimmy Kelly of Portland, Ore.; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
The family will visit with friends from 10 a.m. to noon today at the funeral home.

Andrew Michael Phelan
Andrew Michael Phelan, infant son of Dutch Allan and Kala Ann Phelan of Hackett, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in a Springdale hospital.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Valley View cemetery in Greenwood under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents, Leon and Tracy Slote of Sweet Springs, Mo.; paternal grandparents, Dutch Phelan and Sue Hartsfield of Hackett and the late Ruby Phelan; maternal great-grandparents, Paula Cass, Manuel Brasher and James A. Slote of Hackett; paternal great-grandparents, Melvin and Elaine Phelan of Greenwood and Bud and Mary Struble of Hackett; maternal great-great-grandparents, Charlene Miller of Hackett and Edna Slote of Barling; paternal great-great-grandmother, Grace Smith of Mountainburg; aunt, Jami Slote of Sweet Springs, Mo.; uncle, Cody Phelan of Hackett.

Jennifer Jean Wood
Jennifer Jean Wood, 25, of Fort Smith died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was born Dec. 14, 1977, to Tonia Elaine Dolan Wood and David Anthony Wood. She was a member of our Redeemer Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, Tonia Elaine Dolan Wood.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Steep Hill cemetery in Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Mason and Marty Fant, Patrick Byrd, Jason Nelligan, Carl, Justin and Donald Ray.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
She is survived by her father, David Wood of the home; her grandparents, Bobby and Betty Dolan of Fort Smith and Doris Jean Nimmo of Fort Smith.

John J. “Jack” Helfrich
John J. “Jack” Helfrich, 73, of Fort Smith died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, in Fort Smith.
He was a retired engineer for the Whirlpool corporation, a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, where he was state deputy and state master of the fourth degree, honorary life member of the Westside Nut Club of Evansville, Ind., and past president of the Whirlpool Management Club.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial at Holy Cross cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Rita; three daughters, Terri and husband Steve Haaser of Fort Smith, Jane and husband Dick Wakefield of Fort Smith and Anna and husband Jeff Kupers of Vicksburg, Miss.; five sons, Peter and wife Christine Helfrich of Salt Lake City, Donald Helfrich of Longview, Texas, Lt. Col. Kenneth and wife Cathy Helfrich of Jacksonville, N.C., Matthew Helfrich of Lavaca and Thomas and wife Danielle Helfrich of Stevensville, Mich.; two sisters, Donna Rowlett of Newburg, Ind., and Mary Brown of Napersville, Ill.; a brother, William F. Helfrich of Evansville, Ind.; 20 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Peter, Donald, Kenneth, Matthew and Thomas Helfrich, Joel Haaser and Justin Brown.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Clabber Club and the Retired Whirlpool Breakfast Club.
Memorial contribution may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, P.O. Box 1866, Fort Smith 72902; or to the Knights of Columbus Building Fund, 10203 Columbus Acres, Fort Smith 72903.

Vivian Rowbotham
LAMAR — Vivian Cook Rowbotham, 87, of Lamar died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in local nursing home. She was born Jan. 17, 1915, in Lamar. She was the widow of Woodrow L. Rowbotham.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hardwicke Funeral Home Chapel in Clarksville with burial at Lamar cemetery in Lamar.
She is survived by a brother, Ray Cook of Sikeston, Mo.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary Way
KEOTA — Mary Grace Way, 90, of Keota died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in Stigler. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Keota.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. today at Keota City cemetery under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Stigler.
She is survived by a son, Harry L. Way of Glendale, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Brother Benedict Silva
SUBIACO — Brother Benedict Silva, O.S.B., 75, of Subiaco, formerly of Belize, Central America, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, in Fort Smith. He was a monk of Subiaco Abbey for 47 years in his monastic profession, came to United States in 1954 and professed his vows as monk on the feast of St. Benedict, March 21, 1956, receiving the name Benedict. He was first to serve the community on the abbey farm and dairy until 1956 and was assigned to the abbey kitchen. He went back to Belize on Sept. 8, 1971, and became one of the founding monks at the Santa Familia Monastery and was completed in 1978. He retired in 1999 at the Subiaco Abbey and had a major role in landscaping the grounds at the abbey.
A wake was held Sunday at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Subiaco.
Mass was held Monday at St. Benedict Catholic Church with burial at Abbey cemetery in Subiaco under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.

Burl Gibson
GREENWOOD — Burl Ray Gibson, 84, of Greenwood died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, in a local nursing home. He attended Abbott Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Mansfield with burial at Pleasant Grove No. 2 cemetery in Abbott.
He is survived by a brother, Harold Gibson of Mansfield.
Pallbearers will be Paul Moore, Jack and Forrest Livingston, Shawn Stinson, Jerry Carter and Coy Butler.

Alta Curtis
SHADY POINT — Alta Mae Curtis, 77, of Shady Point died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in Sallisaw. She was born Dec. 26, 1925, in Daisy, Okla. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was the widow of Granville Curtis.
No services are planned at this time. Cremation will be under the direction of Grace Manor Funeral Home of Poteau.
She is survived by two sons, John and William Granville Curtis, both of Shady Point; a sister, Willie Horton of Kansas; a brother, Ernst Jackson of Sallisaw; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Ruth Willis
GREENWOOD — Ruth E. Willis, 89, of Greenwood, formerly of Muskogee, Okla., died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in Greenwood. She was a homemaker and a member of Greenwood First Baptist Church. She was the widow of Leo Willis Sr.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. today at Greenhill cemetery in Muskogee, Okla., under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
She is survived by a daughter, Marjorie Gorman of Muskogee, Okla.; a son, Don Dulaney of Greenwood; a sister, Mary Slusher of Tulsa; a brother, Walter Rinehart of Fort Gibson, Okla.; three grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Edith Wright
HEAVENER — Edith Lucille Wright, 83, of Heavener died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in Poteau. She was a cook for many years for the school and a member of First Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with burial at Memorial Park in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
She is survived by two sons, Jim Wright of Fort Smith and Bud of Heavener; and one grandchild.

Treva Hardin
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Treva Marie Hardin, 66, of Bakersfield, Calif., formerly of Heavener, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, in Bakersfield. She was of the Baptist faith.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Park in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
She is survived by three sons, Alan and Terry Hardin, both of Bakersfield, Calif., and Ron Hardin of Heavener; two sisters, Ruby and Eva Sizemore, both of Heavener; two brothers, Jack and Burley Sizemore, both of Heavener; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Hughie Pledger II
LAVACA — Hughie Ray Pledger II, 29, of Lavaca died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in his home. He was born March 9, 1973, in Fort Smith. He was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Southern Baptist Church in Central City with burial at Mayberry cemetery in Central City under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Lavaca.
He is survived by his father, Hughie Pledger of Central City, his mother, Ginger Besser Ballard of Hackett; a sister, Tammy Davis of Fort Smith; and his maternal grandmother, Anna Besser of Eudora, Kan.
Pallbearers will be Eddie Arnold, Richard Bradenburg, Dean Davis, Charles and Joseph Flesher and David Simpson.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Support Foundation, 3324 South M St., Fort Smith, AR 72903.

Pete Logan
BOONEVILLE — Pete O’Neal Logan, 77, of Booneville died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in his home. He was a retired gas serviceman from San Diego Gas and Electric Co., a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Masonic Lodge No. 775 Cardiff By The Sea in Cardiff, Calif., and of the Baptist faith.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bud Davis cemetery near Booneville under the direction of Roberts Funeral Home of Booneville.
He is survived by his wife, Robbie; a daughter, Cathy Ligon of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; three sons, Garry and Patrick Logan, both of Booneville, and Grady Lynn Logan of San Marcos, Calif.; a sister, Helen Gatlin of Little Rock; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Gadbury, Dean Davis, Hub Brooks, Harold Morris, Bud Zornes and Hoyt Wagoner.
Memorial contributions may be made to Arkansas Department of Health, Hospice Program, 1708 West C Place, Russellville, AR 72801.

Nell Greenmyer
KEOTA — Nell Yost Greenmyer, 82, of Keota died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Stigler. She was retired from the Keota post office after many years of service and a member of Keota Church of Christ for 47 years.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Keota Church of Christ with burial at Keota City cemetery under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Keota.
She is survived by two daughters, June Rose of Keota and Judy Brigance of McAlester, Okla.; three sons, Robert “Sonny” Greenmyer of Tulsa, Roger Greenmyer of Keota and Rick Greenmyer of Stigler; two sisters, Winnie Harp of Keota and Joyce Dowell of San Antonio; a brother, Neil Yost of Stigler; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Donny and Tyson Greenmyer, Scott, Timothy and Daniel Brigance and Josh McClary.
The body may be viewed at the funeral home.

Johnie Dunn
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. —Johnie Patt Dunn, 55, of Broken Arrow, Okla. died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in Tulsa. He was born March 29, 1947, in Midland. He was parts manager for Nelson Nissan-Mazda and a member of Aspen Park Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hayhurst Funeral Home Chapel in Broken Arrow, Okla.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; a daughter, Terri Devonne of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a son, Johnie Scott Dunn of Foyil, Okla.; his mother, Bertie Dunn of Mansfield; two sisters, Edith Gouger of Greenwood and Katherine Bolton of Huntington; three brothers, Vernon Dunn of Mansfield, Raymond Dunn of Fort Smith and Walter Dunn of Creswell, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
