Mr. Eldon Smith, 88, of Tuckerman died Friday. He was born July 17, 1922 at Ravenden Springs, the son of John and Clara (Brandon) Smith. Mr. Smith was a television repairman, and drove a school bus several years. He was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church of Tuckerman, and a United States Army veteran, serving in World War II. He enjoyed fixing things. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma (Davis) Smith; one brother, Zeke Smith; and one sister, Ethel Mae Willmuth; his parents; and his step-mother, Nancy (Norman) Smith. He is survived by two daughters, Alisia Roberts and husband Leslie of Tuckerman and Teresa Long of Tuckerman; four sisters, Glenna Conyers of Batesville, Johnnie Walker of Batesville, Evelyn Huskey of Batesville, and Janice McFarlin of South Haven, Mississippi; five grandchildren, Brandon Roberts, Ashley Roberts, Kiley Roberts, Nicole Long, and Josh Long; and twelve great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Monday at First Free Will Baptist Church of Tuckerman. Interment will be in Gracelawn Cemetery. Visitation is Sunday, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Mrs. Nola Mae Jones

Mrs. Nola Mae (Moore) Jones, 77, of Newport died Monday, October 4, 2010. She was born February 13, 1933 at Palestine, Arkansas, the daughter of John Andrew and Alpha (Dodson) Moore. Mrs. Jones owned a daycare for forty years, and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Assembly of God at Newport, where she served as church secretary and adult Sunday School teacher for twenty-four years. Mrs. Jones enjoyed reading, sewing, and gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband J.W. “Wesley” Jones; one daughter, Katherine Morgan; one brother, Herman Moore; three sisters, Jenavive Davis, Alice Perry, and Jo Montgomery; and her parents. Mrs. Jones is survived by one son, Tom Jones of Batesville, Arkansas; two daughters, Sandy Broome of Dallas, Texas and Glenda Wellman of Newark, Arkansas; one brother, Andrew Moore of Mackinaw, Illinois; nine grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Thursday at First Assembly of God at Newport. Interment will be in Watson Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Mrs. Geneva (Anderson) Whaley, 77, of Newport died Tuesday, October 05, 2010. She was born June 22, 1933 at Weldon, the daughter of Halford and Ethel (Graves) Anderson. Mrs. Whaley had worked for Pinedale Nursing Home, and was a member of Central Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking, and making floral arrangements. Mrs. Whaley was preceded in death by his husband, Bobby E. Whaley; three brothers, Roy, Kirby, and K.C. Anderson; and one sister, Mary Sue Kirby. She is survived by two sons, Dennis Whaley and wife Kim of Newport and Terry Whaley and wife Margaret of Concord; two daughters, Teresa Eich of Tuckerman, and Genia Cornwell and husband Ronnie of Tuckerman; three brothers, Oscar Anderson of Batesville, J.C. Anderson of Watsonville, California, and Ray Anderson of Santa Cruz, California; four sisters, Dorothy Hawks of Oregon, Nadine Elliot of Watsonville, California, Nancy Drewery of Watsonville, California, and Juanita Wright of Bentonville, Arkansas; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Gracelawn Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Mr. D.L. Pharis

Mr. D.L. Pharis, 85, of Newport passed away Sunday, October 10, 2010 at Little Rock. He was born November 9, 1924 at Poinsett County, the son of Deckard Lee and Martha (Carter) Pharis. Mr. Pharis was a retired security person, and a member of the Church of Christ. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and dancing. Mr. Pharis was preceded in death by his son, Scotty Pharis; and nine brothers and sisters. He is survived by two sons, Donald Pharis and wife Julie of Maumelle and Billy Pharis and wife Diane of Fayetteville; one daughter, Sharon Green and husband David of Medina, Ohio; twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; the mother of his children, Etta Faye Ruch; and his best friend and companion of many years, Wanda Copeland.
Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Jackson’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Pennington Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Barry Owens, Jarrett Joyner, Josh Pharis, Brian Pharis, Jimmy Pharis, Dexter Pruett, and Sonny Ballard. Larry Smith will be an honorary pallbearer.
Mrs. Wanda Green

Mrs. Wanda Faye Green, 72, of Newport died Monday, October 11, 2010. She was born August 17, 1938 at Caraway, the daughter of Wilson R. and Vena Ellen (Hubble) Parker. Mrs. Green was a home health aide for the White River Area Agency on Aging for over twenty years, and loved helping people. She was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church, and enjoyed watching soap operas, westerns, and horror movies. Mrs. Green loved to talk on the phone, and enjoyed her dogs, Skipper and Chloe. Her greatest love, however, was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Green and her parents. Mrs. Green is survived by one son, David Green and wife Karen of Weiner; one daughter, Tammy Canard and husband James of Tuckerman; two brothers, Wilson Parker and wife Pat of Cabot and Larry Parker of St. Joe, Arkansas; two sisters, Ruth Jones of Tuckerman and Bonnie Flowers and husband Raymond of Wylie, Texas; three grandchildren, Aric Simmons and wife Susan of Jonesboro, April Stokes and husband Josh of Newport; and Patrick Green of Paragould; and one great-grandchild, Bailey Stokes.
Graveside services are 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Mrs. Alene Jones Shields

ALENE Jones SHIELDS passed away on October 8, 2010 at the age of 75. Alene was born on March 22, 1935 in Swifton, Arkansas to Ludy and Edith Jones. Alene attended the Swifton schools and graduated in 1952. She attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and received her bachelor’s degree in education. Alene taught high school math in the Houston area for many years. During this time she returned to school and earned her Master’s Degree in education administration from Stephen F. Austin State University. After her retirement, she moved back to Swifton and taught math and home economics for five additional years in Swifton and Leachville. She had recently relocated to Sugar Land, Texas to be close to her children and grandchildren. Alene enjoyed music, movies, and dancing. Some of her best times were spent shopping and traveling with her family, grandchildren, and friends. Alene was preceded in death by her parents Ludy and Edith Jones and her former husband Jim Shields. Alene is survived by her three children: son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Maureen Shields of Sealy, Texas; son Greg Shields of Falls Church, Virginia; daughter and son-in-law, Shanna and Tim Duffey of Houston, Texas; grandsons Jason Shields, Tyler Duffey, and Travis Duffey. She is also survived by an uncle, aunts, many cousins, and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 16, 2010 at Swifton Church of Christ. Interment will be in Dowell’s Chapel Cemetery. Visitation is Friday, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home.

Ms. Deborah “Debbie” (Slayden) Hopkins, 55, of Tuckerman died Monday, October 11, 2010 at Searcy. She was born October 22, 1954 at Newport, the daughter of R.W. and Cardllia (Lewis) Slayden. Ms. Hopkins was a self-employed beautician for over thirty-seven years, and a member of the Tuckerman Church of Christ. She enjoyed gardening, and loved her animals. Ms. Hopkins was preceded in death by her mother, Cardllia Slayden. She is survived by her father, R.W. Slayden of Tuckerman; one son, Colter Slayden Hopkins of Tuckerman; one sister, Diann Slayden Odell of Florida; two nephews, Jason Odell and John Paul Odell, both of Florida; her special friend, Felix Young of Tuckerman; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Friday at Jackson’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Cheshier Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Mrs. Marie Chambliss

Mrs. Marie V. (Sammons) Chambliss, 93, of Newport died Friday, October 15, 2010 at Newport. She was born on February 24, 1917, the daughter of David Crockett and Vertie Sammons. Mrs. Marie was a homemaker and a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading her bible and helping others. Mrs. Marie loved spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, William E.L. Chambliss; her daughter, Bobbie Jean Moon; her parents; one brother and four sisters. Mrs. Marie is survived by four sons, Bill Chambliss of Huntington, Texas, Wayne Chambliss and wife Sue of Austin, Texas, Glen Chambliss of Big Springs, Texas and David Chambliss and wife, Mary of Tuckerman, Arkansas; fifteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.

Mr. Eugene Hurst of Horn Lake, Mississippi, died Thursday, October 21, 2010, at Jonesboro. He was born September 15, 1942 at Long Creek Community at Grubbs, the son of Aaron E. and Mildred Mabel (London) Hurst. Mr. Hurst was a self-employed mechanic, and was of the Baptist belief. He enjoyed hunting, and loved to boat ride. Mr. Hurst was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Hurst; three sisters, Geraldine Hurst, Alice Hurst, and Lawanda Hurst; and his parents. He is survived by two daughters, Nancy Longmire and husband James of Horn Lake, Mississippi and Erin Sziklai and husband Russell Townsley of Horn Lake, Mississippi; two brothers, David Hurst and wife Brenda of Grubbs and Glen Hurst and wife Brinda of Jonesboro; six grandchildren, John Rowland, Matt Sziklai, Joel Sziklai, Hailee Sziklai, Marisa Longmire, and Kelsey Longmire; two great-grandchildren, Jaymi Moulding and Jaylen Bernard; and two nephews, Brian and Brandon Hurst.

Mr. Bobby Wayne Brock, 63, of Tuckerman died Saturday, October 30, 2010 at St. Joe, Missouri. He was born January 23, 1947 at Tuckerman, the son of James Benjamin and Bernice (Watson) Brock. Mr. Brock was a truck driver for over forty years, his handle was “Midnight Special”. He was a member of the Church of Christ, and a Vietnam veteran. Mr. Brock enjoyed hunting, car racing, and especially spending time with his grandchildren, whom he loved very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Bernice Brock; one brother, David Sullins; and one sister, Katherine Sullins Carney. Mr. Brock is survived by his wife, Cynthia (Canard) Brock; three sons, Robert Brock and wife Tammy of Swifton, Roger Brock of Tuckerman, and Michael Brock and wife Mary Kay of Tuckerman; three brothers, James Michael “Mickey” Brock of Tuckerman, Michael Sullins of Newport, and Allen Sullins of Vilonia; one sister, Mary Howard of Newport;a brother-in-law, Clyde Canard; eight grandchildren, Paige Brock, Ashton Brock, Taylor Brock, Garrett Brock, Whitley Brock, Kayley Brock, Michael Baty, and Dusty Stephens; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and his friends and partner in the trucking company, Jerry Henley.

Mrs. Helen (Hatfield) Jones, 83, of Ash Flat, Arkansas, died Saturday, October 30, 2010. She was born May 10, 1927 at Swifton, the daughter of Fred and Hazel (Green) Hatfield. Mrs. Jones was a homemaker, and a member of the Assembly of God. She was sewing, and spoiling her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus Edward Jones; her parents; two daughters, Joyce Ann Jones and Venita Jones; two infant step-daughters; three brothers, Lloyd Hatfield, Merle Hatfield, and Billy Hatfield; two sisters, Glenda Brock and Elwanda Jones. Mrs. Jones is survived by one son, Roy Jones and wife Kay of Ash Flat; one daughter, Loretta Seanard of Ash Flat; one step-son, Jerry Jones of Tuckerman; one step-daughter, Shirley Wilson of Swifton; three brothers, Harold Hatfield of Eddyville, Kentucky, Nick Hatfield of Smithland, Kentucky, and Freddie Hatfield of Alicia, Arkansas; two sisters, Virginia Barnett of Swifton and Aretta Hubbard of Smithland, Kentucky; five grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Dora M. Evins, 77, of Newport died Monday, November 8, 2010 at Jonesboro. Mrs. Evins was retired from American Lantern in Newport, and was a member of the Cherokee Street Church of Christ. She enjoyed quilting, reading, and crafting. Mrs. Evins was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Evins; and three brothers. She is survived by two sons, Bob Evins and wife Pat of Cherokee Village, Arkansas and Phillip Evins and wife Tammy of Jonesboro; one daughter, Charlotte Parker and husband Steve of Chickasha, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Aimee Galbraith, Chris Evins, Andrea Hancock; Travis Parker, Taryn Evins, Zachary Evins; four great-grandchildren, Alex Galbraith, Carter Galbraith, Natalie Evins, and Cannon Parker; and a special friend, Sara Howard.

Mr. Donald Carlton, 71, of Beedeville died Monday, November 8, 2010 at Jonesboro. He was born October 5, 1939 at Cow Lake, Arkansas, the son of John and Goldie (Fortune) Carlton. Mr. Carlton was a crop duster, and of the Church of Christ belief. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Randy Carlson; and two sisters, Patsy Goldman and Doris Hill. Mr. Carlton is survived by his wife, Louise (Hodge) Carlton of Newport; one daughter, Lisa Whitehead and husband Billy of Newark; one son, Donnie Carlton of Beedeville; one sister, Shirley Honey of Amagon; and three grandchildren, Tyler Whitehead, Chloe Carlton, and Ally Carlton.
