Richard Gardena Perez
Richard Gardena Perez, 72, died Nov. 21, 2001, at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith. A native of San Antonio, Texas, he was born March 20, 1929, to Michael P. and Henrietta Gardena Perez.
Richard was a graduate of St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, and he completed graduate work at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps 1946-49, stationed at El Toro, Calif. He studied at the U.S. Navy School of Music in Bethesda, Md., and played with the U.S. Marine Corps Band.
An outstanding musician, he played with a number of professional orchestras in and around San Antonio. Richard played lead alto saxophone and was renowned for his beautiful sound and his highly individual and personal interpretation of music.
Richard worked as a juvenile probation officer in Bexar County, Texas, with the Denver Urban Renewal Authority in Denver and with institutions for emotionally disturbed children in San Diego and Huntington, West Virginia. In 1980he came to Fort Chaffee, serving in the youth program through the University of Miami. He retired from the Fort Smith Adult Education Center.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley J. Perez; two sons, Christopher Perez of Potomac, Maryland and Andrew Perez of Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter, Margot DeFisher of Cincinnati; two stepsons, Alan Johnson of Dallas and Daniel Johnson of St. Croix, USVI; four brothers, Rudolph of Valencia, Calif., Michael of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Henry of Marietta, Ga., and Robert of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three grandsons, William and Michael DeFisher, both of Cincinnati, and Alex Perez of Potomac; two granddaughters, Sarah Perez of Potomac and Adrianna DeFisher of Cincinnati; two step-grandchildren, Clark and Samantha Johnson of St. Croix; and his aunt, Estella Davila of San Antonio.
Rosary will be 6:30 p.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel, funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, and burial will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at U.S. National cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
Serving as pallbearers will be David Armbruster, Charles Hines, Jack Ragon and Peter Fagan. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Elizondo, Paul Flowers, Jacinto Guzman, Jesse Bustos and Bobby Galvan.
The family will visit with friends Friday evening after the Rosary from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fort Smith Public Schools Music Program.
Gilbert Schlutterman
Gilbert Schlutterman, 68, of Subiaco, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, in a local hospital. He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, St. Benedict Men’s Society, the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Knights of America. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Joseph and Annie Young Schluterman, and two brothers, William and George Schluterman.
Rosary will be 7:30 p.m. today at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Subiaco. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Benedict Catholic Church with burial at St. Benedict cemetery in Subiaco under the direction of Roller Funeral Home in Paris.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Schluterman of the home; a daughter, Ann Schluterman of Subiaco; five sons, Patrick and Tammy Schluterman of Subiaco, Sam and Ellen Schluterman of Subiaco, Lesa Schluterman of Charleston, Junior and Jenny Schluterman of Subiaco and Herman and Karen Schluterman of Subiaco; two sisters, Stella Wewers of Subiaco and Anna Marie Frost of Subiaco; two brothers, Paul and Emil, both of Subiaco; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Mark Forst, Andy Schluterman, Justin Schluterman, Edward Wewers, Billy Schluterman and George Vincdent Schluterman.
The body may be viewed from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and at the rosary.
Vernon Staggs
Vernon Staggs, 42, of Pocola, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, in Pocola. He was born Dec. 22, 1958, in San Andreas, Calif., and was vice president of Armstrong Tool.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Evans Memorial Chapel in Pocola with the Rev. Jimmy D. Cook and the Rev. Richard Maness officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Memory Gardens in McAlester.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Staggs of the home; a daughter, Stefanie Renee Staggs of the home; a son, Sean Michael Staggs of the home; his mother and stepfather, NaDeane Staggs Smith and Roie Smith of Tulare, Calif.; his maternal grandmother, Goldie Brindley of Reedley, Calif.; three brothers, Danny Staggs of Tulare, Calif., Delbert Staggs of Broadhead, Wis., and Stoney Staggs of Pocola; four sisters, Doris Wilson of Reedley, Calif., Shirley Staggs of Reedley, Calif., Barabara Pounds of Fort Smith and Terri Dais of Pocola; and numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives and loved ones and a host of beloved friends.
Pallbearers will be Sean Staggs, Larry Armstrong, Bill Piovesan, Stoney Staggs, Frank Tedrick, Shawn Reece, Delbert Staggs and Joe Stanley.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Tracy and Raymond Reece Jr.
Mr. Staggs was married
for 21 years to his soulmate, Sandra Staggs, since December 1980. They had dated for four years before marrying. They moved to Oklahoma in 1980 from California. He worked in the oil field in McAlester from 1980 to 1988. In 1987, his daughter Stefanie was born and shortly before moving to Pocola, in 1988, his son, Sean, was born. He was transferred to Pocola to work at Armstrong Tool Co., where he was the vice president. He died of pancreatic cancer, with which he had been diagnosed in March. He enjoyed his Harley-Davidson. He was a wonderful father and husband. He loved spending time with his children, family and close friends whom he considered family. He will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

Ben Boggs Jr.
CHARLESTON — Ben F. Boggs Jr., 85, of Charleston died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, in Charleston. He was born Dec. 26, 1917, in Gans. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of VFW and a Protestant. He was the widower of Johnnye Boggs.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Smith Mortuary Chapel in Charleston with burial at Garden of Memories cemetery in Charleston.
He is survived by seven daughters, Clema Boggs of California, Wanda Smithson of Lavaca, Sammye Willet of Prairie Grove, Sandra Boggs of Van Buren, Susie Boggs of Fayetteville, Sharon Harvey of Central City and Jenny Gattis of Charleston; four sons, William Boggs of Lavaca, Benjamin Boggs III of Fort Smith, John Boggs of Rock Island and Rockey Boggs of Hackett; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Charles Marion
Charles E. Marion, 80, of Van Buren died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, in Little Rock. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Parkview Alliance Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma; three daughters, Linda Downs of Columbus, Ann Wise of Van Buren and Sue Suter of Fort Smith; a son, Gaylen Marion of Van Buren; a sister, Dorothea Lambi of Des Moines, Iowa; 18 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Stephen Wise, Dean Marion Jr., Donnie Gentry, Jon Wells, Brandon Gish, Terry Hollan, Thomas Deters and A.K. McBride.

Naomi Roberts
SMITHVILLE, Okla. — Naomi Jewel Roberts, 70, of Smithville, Okla. died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, in Mena. She was born Aug. 17, 1933, in Deora, Colo. She was a homemaker, a member of Octavia Baptist Church and was active in the senior citizens center in Wickes.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Pleasant Grove Church of the Nazarene with burial at Pleasant Grove cemetery under the direction of Hall Funeral Service of Mena.
She is survived by her husband, William; four daughters, Judy Whitaker of Cove, B. Thomas of Paso Robles, Calif., Sandra Badger of Rocky and Rhonda Smith of Plunkettville; a son, William Roberts of Mena; two brothers, Frank Parker of Camas Valley, Ore., and Bud Parker of Atascadero, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

PAGE — Marcella Jane Burch Dill, 55, of Page died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, in Page. She was a member of the Page Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Page Church with burial at Talihina cemetery in Talihina, Okla., under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
She is survived by her husband, Emmert; a daughter, Joanna Gooden of Ardmore, Okla.; a son, Jimmy Cooley of Talihina, Okla.; a sister, Judy Cash of Cape Cod, Mass.; a brother, Bobby Mings of Henryetta, Okla.; and four grandchildren.
Wilfred Pryor
GREENWOOD — Wilfred Pryor, 91, of Greenwood died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, in Greenwood. He was a retired coal and potash miner, a member of Greenwood Church of Christ and the United Mine Workers of America.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Greenwood Church of Christ with burial at Old Jenny Lind cemetery under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma; two daughters, Janice Duckworth of Kansas City, Kan., and Judy Dodson of Ardmore, Okla.; a son, Jack Pryor of Greenwood; a sister, Pearl Shields of Fort Smith; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Perry Putman
HOUSTON — Perry Alson, Putman, 42, of Houston died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, in Houston. He was born Nov. 1, 1960, in Houston. He was a social worker for a nursing home and of the Church of Christ faith.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Sugar Grove Church of Christ in Houston. The body was cremated under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Putman of Mena; and a sister, Susan Anderson of Fort Worth, Texas.
William McNutt
William Earl “Bill” McNutt, 77, of Fort Smith died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, in his home. He was with maintenance for First National Bank, a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Rosary will be 6:30 p.m. today at Putman Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith.
Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial at Calvary cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by a brother, Frank McNutt of Sheridan.
Pallbearers will be Harold Gilbert, Buddy Coker, Charles Logan, Kenneth Bynum, Delbert McConnell and Chuck Girard.

Hoppy Lockhart
SALLISAW — Hoppy D. Lockhart, 56, of Sallisaw died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, in Sallisaw. He was born July 30, 1947, in Fort Smith. He was a graduate of Sallisaw High School. He was with Oklahoma Department of Transportation for 38 years, currently superintendent for Interstate 40 maintenance and a Baptist.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Baptist Church in Sallisaw with burial at Sallisaw City cemetery under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer; a son, Heath Lockhart of Sallisaw; three stepdaughters, Tina Cassady and Dollie Dunlap, both of Sallisaw, and Georgia Kilby of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four half sisters, Judy Rogers, Rexine Hill and Edna Brewer, all of Sallisaw, and Peggy Andrews of Florence, Miss.; two half brothers, Roger Lockhart of Perry, Okla., and Ergie Lockhart of Meridian, Miss.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

W.H. Templeton
SALLISAW — W. H. “Bill” Templeton, 73, of Sallisaw died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, in Sallisaw. He was in the Army from 1948 to 1950 and the widower of Erma Templeton.
No services are scheduled. The body was cremated under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
He is survived by two daughters, Karen Herring and Brenda Rueve of New Madrid, Mo.; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Lonzo Edgar
Lonzo Edgar, 63, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, in a local hospital. He was of the Pentecostal faith.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Spadra cemetery near Clarksville.
He is survived by three sisters, Florence Chandler of Rudy, Pat Brumley of Mountainburg and Emmer Mooney of Carthage, Miss.; and a brother, Carl Edgar of Dyer.

ALMA — Ruth Simmons, 91, of Alma died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, in Pocola. She was born Jan. 13, 1912, in Mountainburg. She was a member of Alma Heights Missionary Baptist Church and the widow of Dewey Simmons.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Ocker Funeral Home Chapel in Alma with burial at Peters cemetery in Mountainburg.
She is survived by a daughter, Norma Hance of Pocola; a son, Darrell Simmons of Fort Smith; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Paul Meadows, Bill Cole, Ron Southall, Jason Taylor, Aaron Jones and Steve Swires.
