Jean Benge
MULDROW — Jean Benge, 70, of Muldrow died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, in Muldrow. She was Jan. 13, 1933, in Nicut Community. She was a former assembly worker at Baldor Electric for more than 20 years, a Baptist and the widow of Floyd Benge.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Liberty Assembly of God north of Roland with burial at Liberty cemetery north of Roland under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Roland.
She is survived by two daughters, Sherrye Wofford of Liberty Community and Julie Young of Arkoma; a son, Floyd Benge of Liberty Community; her father, Jim Brown of Muldrow; two sisters, Maxine Peters of Rogers and Betty O’donnell of Oolagah, Okla.; a brother, Wesley Brown of Moore, Okla.; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Heath Woods, Dwayne Wofford, William and Justin Benge, Duke Cox and Stoney Woods.
The body may be viewed noon to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Arthur McKown
Arthur A. McKown, 89, of Fort Smith died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, in Fort Smith. He was a member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church in Fort Smith, the Belle Pointe Lodge No. 20, a 32nd degree Mason and the AARP. He was the widower of Bessie McKown.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Fentress Mortuary Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Roselawn cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by a daughter, Dana Boles of Rockwall, Texas; three sons, Blake McKown of Jackson, Tenn., Stephen McKown of Temecula, Calif. and Nick McKown of Alma; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jack Lasey, M.L. Summers, J.D. Brown, Jim Rauser, Alan Boles and L.G. Katon.
The family will visit with friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Deborah Steelman
HEAVENER — Deborah Marie Steelman, 46, of Heavener died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was born Aug. 4, 1957, in Poteau. She was a homemaker and a member of Old Pathway Baptist Church in Heavener.
Funeral was held Monday at First Baptist Church in Heavener with burial at Reichert cemetery in the Reichert community under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, J.D.; two daughters, Vinda Chitwood of Panama City, Fla., and Tawana Steelman of Stillwater, Okla.; two sons, Jared Steelman of Perry, Okla., and Joshua Steelman of Poteau; her parents, Wayne and Pauline Fowler of Heavener; three sisters, Sherry Steelman and Phyllis Pace, both of Heavener, and Judy Callahan of Poteau; two brothers, Bob and Terry Fowler, both of Heavener; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Wayne and Erik Smith, Wayne Smith II, Cody May, Marcus Henry and Karston Polk.

Farrie Harrower
CHARLESTON — Farrie Weese Harrower, 87, of Charleston died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was born Oct. 2, 1916, in the Vesta community in Franklin County. She was a homemaker, a member of the Northside Baptist Church in Charleston and the widow of Arthur Harrower.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Northside Baptist Church with burial at Parks cemetery in Charleston under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
She is survived by four daughters, Sue Bradley, Vera Magby, Wilma Wall and Velta McCoy, all of Branch; four sons, Raymond, Floyd, Jay and Cecil Harrower, all of Charleston; a brother, Houston Weese of Charleston; 22 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Gary and Brandon Magby, Curtis and Scott Bradley, Michael Harrower and Daniel Wall.
Eula Overman
MENA — Eula May Overman, 83, of Mena died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in Mena. She was born May 13, 1920, in Fredericktown, Mo. She was a homemaker, a member of First United Methodist Church and the widow of T.M. Overman Jr.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Laurel Land cemetery in Fort Worth, Texas, under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
She is survived by a sister, Lela Otto of Gardnerville, Nev.; two brothers, Guy Adams of Maryland Heights, Mo., and Ray Adams of Wappapello, Mo.
Elmer Mitchell
SPIRO — Elmer Davis “Dave” Mitchell, 77, of Spiro died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, in Spiro.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Spiro. Arrangements are under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Spiro.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; a daughter, Gayla Freeman of Spiro; three sons, Terry Hubbard of Tacoma, Wash., Terry Mitchell of Spiro and Frederick Mitchell; two sisters, Thelma Vratisovasky of Payson, Ariz., and Mavis Boyer of Fort Pierre, S.D.; a brother, Leslie Mitchell of Pierre, S.D.; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Frances Rose
POTEAU — Frances Willarde Rose, 91, of Poteau died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in Poteau. She was born June 13, 1912, in Talihina. She was a homemaker, a member of First Baptist Church in Calvin, Okla., and the widow of John Rose.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. today at Falfa Baptist Church with burial at Laura-McGee cemetery in Buffalo Valley under the direction of Grace Manor Funeral Home of Poteau.
She is survived by three daughters, Margaret Fitzgerald of Calvin, Okla., Carolyn Renfro of Poteau, and Jennie Streetman of Oklahoma City; two sons, John E. Rose of Bartlesville, Okla., and Kenneth Rose of Buffalo Valley, Okla.; 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Lyndal and Curtis Fitzgerald, Brian, Brent and Blake Rose, Todd Coleman, Jason Russell and Bill Black.
Donald Williams
WALDRON — Donald Hugh Williams, 70, of Waldron died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, in Waldron. He was a retired machinist, was retired from the Navy, a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, a Baptist, a former president of Scott County Farm Bureau and a member of Masonic Grand Lodge of Mineola, Texas.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Waldron with burial at 2 p.m. at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by two sons, Richard Williams of Fulton, Mo., and Scott Williams of Panama City, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
The body may be viewed 3 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

MENA — Wanda Louise Gann, 75, of Mena died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, in her home. She was born June 1, 1928, in Jacksonville, Texas. She was a registered nurse, of the Presbyterian faith and the widow of James Gann.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Beasley-Wood Funeral Home Chapel in Mena with burial at Pinecrest Memorial Park.
She is survived by two sons, Randy Gann of Highland Village, Texas, and Gary Gann of Mena.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
Nonie Roberson
OZARK — Nonie Mae Roberson, 92, of Ozark died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in Ozark. She was born Sept. 8, 1911, in Texas. She was a homemaker, a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the widow of William Roberson.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Calvary Baptist Church with burial at Duncan cemetery in Ozark under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.
She is survived by a daughter, Christine Edgmon of Bentonville; three sons, William Roberson of Gladstone, Mo., Kenneth Roberson of Greenwood and Carl Roberson of Sedgwich, Kan.; a sister, Vera Magby of Charleston; 15 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Howard, Benny and Robert Magby and Tommy, Jeff and Daniel Roberson.

James Killip
OZARK — James J. Killip, 73, of Ozark died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was born Jan. 21, 1930, in Chicago. He was a self-employed retired roofer and painter, was a member of the Catholic Church, and the American Legion and VFW.
Memorial family service was held Saturday. The body was cremated under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; two daughters, Lorrie Andrews of Gravois Mills, Mo., and Michelle Agular of Kansas City, Mo.; a son, Steve Killip of Atchison, Kan.; four stepchildren, Patrick McCoy and Maxine Bolt, both of Dallas, Ernestine McCoy of Olathe, Kan., and Georgia Finn of Michigan; his mother, Elsie Brewer of Versailles, Mo.; a brother, John Killip Titusville, Fla.; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Lois Stone
MENA — Lois Mae Stone, 32, of Mena died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was born Aug. 8, 1971.
A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Hall Funeral Service Memorial Chapel in Mena. The body was sent for cremation.
She is survived by her parents, Sharon and Junior Hennings of Mena; and two brothers, Nathan Stone of Mena and Joshua Hennings of Fayetteville.
Ruth Keech
OZARK — Ruth Keech, 72, of Ozark died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in Van Buren. She was born Aug. 16, 1931, in Ozark. She was a homemaker and the widow of Johnny Keech.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Belt cemetery in Ozark under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.
She is survived by a son, Terry Keech of Ozark; four sisters, Jewel Elder and June McClelland, both of Ozark, Patsy Williams of Mulberry and Frances Bray of Sugarland, Texas; a brother, William Nichols of Ratcliff; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Sister Irene Verkamp
Sister Irene Verkamp, 80, of Fort Smith died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, in St. Scholastica Monastery. She was a member of St. Scholastica Monastery and made her religious profession June 24, 1941. She taught mathematics, physics, and science at St. Scholastica Academy and St. Anne’s High School both in Fort Smith. She served as secretary-treasurer at St. Scholastica Monastery from 1972 until 1992.
Vespers will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Scholastica Monastery.
Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Scholastica Monastery Chapel with burial at St. Scholastica cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a sister, Imogene Stec of Fort Smith; a brother, Herman Verkamp of Charleston; and sisters in her religious community.
Pallbearers will be Earl Wall, Ken Coyle, Jerry Hendrix, Will Schmitz, Frank Turnbeaugh and Harold Geels.

Martha “Marty” Mackey McQuain
Martha “Marty” Mackey McQuain, 84, of Fort Smith passed away, Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was a member of Goddard United Methodist Church. She received the Spirit of the Frontier Award in December of 1997 from the City of Fort Smith. She was a member of the American Legion Ellig-Stouffer Post No. 31. She was the first woman post commander in 1985, past state commander of the American Legion, life member of the American Legion and VFW, International Women Veteran’s Association, ANIVICUS. She served on the Governor’s task force for Veterans Affairs; she was a member of the National cemetery Land acquisition committee. She was a charter member of the Arkansas State Women’s Senior Golf Association; she was past president of the Lady’s Golf Association at Ben Geren, Van Buren, Fort Chaffee and Fianna Hills. She was an Army veteran of World War II with a rank of captain. Her assignments in the Army were unique for the service women at that time. They included duty in Africa, Italy, France, Belgium, England, and Switzerland. She saw duty as a Drill Team Commander, winning the Atlantic Seaboard Competition, Company Commander of two different companies and as a Battalion Adjutant. She was in the Signal Corps and commanded the only all WAC Signal Center in the world in Caserta, Italy. Moving on to France, she commanded the Signal Center in Dijion, France, for the Southern Line of Communications (SOLOC) which included both male and females troops. Of more than 100,000 women in uniform during World War II, only 565 women received the Bronze Star. Marty was one of those distinguished women. She also earned two Battle Stars, one for the Rome-Amo Campaign and one for the Rhineland Campaign. She was the only female in World War II to receive the French Signal Corps Decoration. She served as a Top Secret Cryptographic Security Officer in both Italy and France. She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Gordon E. McQuain Sr. Army retired.
Funeral will be noon Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
She is survived by three sons, Bruce McQuain of Dacula, Ga., Douglas McQuain of St. Louis and Gordon McQuain Jr. of Fort Smith; three grandchildren, Bruce McQuain Jr. of Atlanta, Shannon McQuain and Kelly McQuain of Fort Smith; five great-grandchildren, Killian, Kameron, Kaelin, Hunter and Hannah.
Pallbearers will be members of the American Post No. 31.
Family will visit with friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home.
