John Thornton
PORUM, Okla. — John E. Thornton, 81, of Porum died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, in Porum. He was a farmer and rancher, a Protestant and an Army veteran of World War II and was retired from the Corps of Engineers. He was the widower of Mary Webster Thornton.
Funeral will be 12:30 p.m. Monday at Agent Funeral Home Chapel in Gore with burial at Fields cemetery near Porum under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Gore.
He is survived by four daughters, Linda Wendlandt of Whitefield, Okla., Jeanne Powell of Stigler, Okla., and Lola Bagwell and Debbie Carter, both of Porum; three sons, Terry and Johnne Thornton, both of Porum, and Billy Thornton of Gorman, Texas; two sisters, Lucille Gossett of Vian and Juanita Scott of Muskogee, Okla.; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be sons-in-law, grandsons-in-law and Gary Clark.
The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Holden Crandall
ALMA — Holden Crandall, 53, of Alma died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, in a local hospital. He was born Sept. 5, 1950, in Providence, R.I. He was an employee of Rheem.
The body will be cremated under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
He is survived by his wife, Paula; two daughters, Georgennia Crandall of Alma and Christina Crandall of California; her mother, Natalie Crandall of Newport Richey, Fla.; five brothers, Daniel and Bruce Crandall, both of California, and Carl, Kurt and John Crandall, all of Florida.

Andrew Van Gorder
PANAMA — Andrew I. Van Gorder Jr., 78, of Panama died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, in Van Buren. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the First United Methodist Church in Panama and a member of the Panama VFW.
Memorial service and burial will be 1 p.m. Monday at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Van Gorder of the home; a stepdaughter, Rosemarie Treiber of St. Louis, Mo.; a son, Karl Mayser of Greenwood; two sisters, Jane Van Gorder of California and Shirley Guzniczak of Carnegie, Penn.; six step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.

James Sharp
ROGERS — James Rel Sharp, 58, of Rogers died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in Fayetteville. He was a car dealer.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Roberts Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Booneville with burial at Mixon cemetery near Booneville.
He is survived by a daughter, Vickie Maxwell of Seattle, Wash.; three sons, James Rel Sharp Jr. of Superior, Colo., Mitchell Sharp of Russellville and Rel Sharp of Sherman, Texas; a sister, Nancy Cox of Booneville; and a brother, Stanley Sharp of Fort Smith.

Robert Bynum
CLARKSVILLE — Robert Bynum, 90, of Clarksville died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in an area hospital. He was born Sept. 1, 1913, in Clarksville. He was a retired coal miner and trucker and a member of Stillwell Bible Baptist Church and Local Union 7869 United Mine Workers of America.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Stillwell Bible Baptist Church with burial at Oakland cemetery in Clarksville under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home of Clarksville.
He is survived by two daughters, Hope Diffee of Maumelle and Sue Gill of Van Buren; a stepson, Don Langston of Fort Smith; two sisters, Leola Hilton and Anna England, both of Clarksville; a brother, Ralph Bynum of Clarksville; and two grandchildren, John Noble of Maumelle and Amber Gill of Van Buren.
Pallbearers will be Jim Yantis, Autry and Matt Meeker, Steve Askins, John Noble and David Lasater.

Leon Gilbreth
Leon Gilbreth, 58, of Fort Smith died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in a local hospital. He was a repair technician at Rheem.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Putman Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Morgan Hill cemetery in Ozark.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sissy Gilbreth of Fort Smith; a sister, Barbara Sue; and two granddaughters, Chelsey and Alyx Gilbreth.
Pallbearers will be Waldo White, Joe Addock, Kenny Hewitt, Manuel Kilgore, Jim Bone and David Hanna.
Memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception School, 223 S. 14th St., Fort Smith, AR 72901.

Erma F. Poole
Erma F. Poole, 91, of Fort Smith died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in Poteau. She was a homemaker and a Jehovah’s Witness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman A. Poole, and a daughter, Marilyn Sue Poole.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Howe cemetery in Howe.
She is survived by three daughters, Betty Smith of Poteau and Ruth Felkner and Joan Beshears, both of Fort Smith; three sons, Ron Brown of Denton, Texas, James Poole of Willis, Texas, and Charles Poole of Fort Smith; a sister, Ollie Wall of Oklahoma City; 17 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Aaron and Bret Beshears, Mike and Ronnie Martin, David Poole, Andy Salley and Richard and Carter Tate.
The family will visit with friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Emily M. Bryan
Emily M. Bryan, 94, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was the devoted wife of Lemuel C. Bryan, who preceded her in death in January after 56 years of marriage. She was a Navy veteran of World War II, served on the Sparks Hospital Women’s Board, was a Junior League of Fort Smith Sustainer and was active at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Episcopal Church with burial at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a niece, Kathryn O. Why; a nephew, James W. Oram Jr.; four great nephews, Gregory R. Why, Andrew O. Why, J. Marshall Oram and Brook B. Oram; and three great nieces, Jamie McLean Russo, Suzanne McLean Stenberg and Leslie W. Reap.
Pallbearers will be Doug Smith, Bob Meek and Brad Jesson.
Memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Clinic, 622 N. B St., Fort Smith, AR 72901.

Vera F. “Sook” Bates
Vera F. “Sook” Bates, 86, of Pocola died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, in a Pocola nursing home. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pocola, a homemaker and a retired nurse from the former Booneville Tuberculosis Sanatorium.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Pocola First United Methodist Church with burial at Macedonia cemetery in Pocola under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Balty Bates, and her brothers and sisters, Earnest Karl, Earl F. “Bud” Karl, Esta Oliver, Chloe Brown and Thelma Campbell.
Pallbearers will be Wayne and Don Becker, Jerry, Tommy and Jeff Brown, Sonny and Lindle Oliver, Paul Karl, Allen Jackson and Mitchell Riley.
The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today.
The family will visit with friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Alpha Davis
MENA — Alpha G. Davis, 88, of Mena died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, in Mena. She was born March 7, 1915, in Waldron. She was a homemaker, of the Nazarene faith and the widow of Harvey Davis.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mena Church of the Nazarene with burial at Union Ridge cemetery in Dayton under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
She is survived by a daughter, Peggy Keener of Y City; two sons, Jimmy Davis of Y City and Harold Davis of Florida; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jerry McCafferty, Herman Woodard, the Rev. Michael Shaddon and Robert McGill.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mena Church of the Nazarene.

Nina Willhoite
Nina Willhoite, 79, of Van Buren died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, in a local hospital. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, the Van Buren Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, and Worthy Matron in 1969. She was the widow of Hugh Willhoite. She was owner and operator of Nina’s Beauty Shop in Van Buren, she led the formation of The Mary Martha Gospel Singers which ministers to area nursing homes and churches.
Funeral will be noon today at the Oak Grove Baptist Church with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by two daughters, Paula Teague of Alma and Hulinda Mullens of Van Buren; a sister, Jane Griffin of Kinta, Okla.; three brothers, Jimmy Brewer of Denver, N.C., Reeves Brunk of Deer Park, Texas, and Doyle Brewer of Santa Anna, Calif.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Tommy and Gary Bowen, Gary Fitzpatrick, Carroll McClure, Ronnie Blount and Doug Shade.
Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Oak Grove Baptist Church and the employees of Ocker Funeral Home.

Katherine Sharum
Katherine R. Sharum, 95, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in a local nursing home. She was a homemaker, a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and the widow of J. Sharum.
Rosary will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Putman Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith.
Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church with burial at Holy Cross cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Kay Popevis of Monrovia, Md.; four sons, James Sharum Jr. of Fort Smith, Urban Sharum of Laramie, Wyo., Raymond Sharum of Paris and Hugh Sharum of Livingston, Texas; a sister, Elizabeth Sharum of Fort Smith; two brothers, Gerald Thron of Fort Smith and Bill Thron of Memphis, Tenn.; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Dan and Travis Sharum, Lonnie Wilson, Wes Saunders, Greg Koenigseder and Will Fergen.

Marc Steinberg
COVE — Marc Howard “Crazy Wolf” Steinberg, 56, of Cove, formerly of Mount Ida, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, in his home. He was born Sept. 13, 1946, in Boston. He was a hair designer, a member of the Ikce Oyate Nation where he was a pipe carrier.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hall Funeral Service Memorial Chapel in Mena. The body was sent for cremation.
He is survived by his wife, Fran; two daughters, April Kies of Lake Worth, Fla. and Leah Johnston of Cove; three sons, Martin Steinberg of El Reno, Okla., Franklin Tinkham Jr. of Hopewell, Va. and Shawn Tinkham of Lantana, Fla.; a sister, Naomi Hardvo of Rabinon, N.H.; a brother, David Steinberg of Israel; and seven grandchildren.

James Cunningham
PARAGOULD — James Phillip “J.P.” Cunningham, 88, of Paragould died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in Jonesboro. He was born July 18, 1915, in Paragould. He was a Army veteran of World War II, a charter member of Harmony Baptist Church, sang in a gospel quartet for over 50 years and a board member of the Greene County Senior Bees.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel in Paragould with burial at New Friendship cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine; two daughters, Donna Kingston and Sherry Vance, both of Paragould; two sons, Darrel Cunningham of Fort Smith and Jim Cunningham of Paragould; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be John and Jacob Cunningham, Lee, Jason and Kasey Kingston, Tony Lucius and Alan Barnes.
Memorial contributions may be made to Greene County Senior Bees Meals on Wheels Program.

ARDMORE, Okla. — Gary “G.T.” Todd, 47, of Ardmore, Okla. died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in his home. He was born April 27, 1956, in El Salvador, San Clavador, Central America. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Ardmore.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Ardmore, Okla. with burial at Mustang cemetery in Mustang, Okla. under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home of Ardmore, Okla.
He is survived by his wife, Leanne; five daughters, Kristina Clinton, Angi and Baylee Todd, Cara Belcher and Candice Bullard; his father, Richard Todd of Fort Smith; a sister, Shauneen Villegas; two brothers, Alan and Rick Todd; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Stinson, David Cox, J.V. Alldredge, Monty Baggett, Dr. Buel Walls, Pat Owenby, Lenny Loloney and Gary Fuzzell.
