TEXARKANA — Laverne Lay, 84, of Texarkana, formerly of Mena, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, in Texarkana, Texas. She was born Nov. 2, 1918, in Wickes. She was a homemaker, attended First United Methodist Church in Mena and the widow of Clarence Lay.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wickes United Methodist Church with burial at Whte Oak cemetery in Mena under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
She is survived by two daughters, Joan Glennis of Wenatchee, Wash. and Judith Mourton of Sapulpa, Okla.; a son, Larry Lay of Mena; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bryan and Rodney Lay, Tim Foster, Fred Stephens, Jason Masters and Ronnie Duckett.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Research of Alzheimer’s Association.

Nora Gordon
OZARK — Nora Nolan Gordon, 99, of Ozark died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in a local nursing home. She was born Nov. 16, 1903, in Alma. She was a homemaker, a child caretaker, a member of Chastain Church of Christ and the widow of Dell Gordon.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Shaffer Funeral Home in Mulberry with burial at Chastain cemetery north of Dyer.
She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Waldrop of Columbus, Ga. and Marion Bell of Mulberry; two sons, Donald Gordon of Lehigh Acres, Fla. and Alfred Gordon of Brownsville, Tenn.; a sister, Bernadine Dahl of Mulberry; 11 granchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Johnson, Billy Spivey, Michael Smith, Bal Simmons, Rice Corse and Glen Groda.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Chastain cemetery Fund, c/o Allied Bank of Mulberry, Mulberry, AR 72947.

James Osborn
SPIRO — James Elmer Osborn, 89, of Spiro died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, in Fort Smith. He was a member of Mount Triumph Baptist Church and the widower of Lola Osborn.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Triumph Baptist Church with burial at Fort Coffee cemetery in Spiro under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Spiro.
He is survived by two daughters, Betty Henderson of Tacoma, Wash. and Tai Lewis of Fort Smith; two sons, Tashala Devroe of Fort Smith and Joe of Oklahoma City; a brother, Lonnie Osborn of Hot Springs; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Clifton DeHorney III
SPIRO — Clifton DeHorney III, 59, of Spiro died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, in Fort Smith. He worked as a chaplain at Jim E. Hamilton Correctional Center for 25 years, was pastor at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Poteau for 16 years and was pastor at Greater Mount Pleasant Church in Spiro.
Funeral will be noon Thursday at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Roland with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Spiro.
He is survived by his wife, Delores; two daughters, Delmonica Hawkins of Baltimore and Lonettia Sparks of Atlanta; a son, Clifton DeHorney IV of Oklahoma City; a sister, Patsy Wright of Sherman, Texas; a brother, George DeHorney of Sherman, Texas; and four grandchildren.
Private family viewing from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Velada Cooley
PARIS — Velda Faye “Rice” Cooley, of Paris died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in Paris. She was a retired nurses aide and a member of First Assembly of God in Paris.
Funeral wil be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Roller Funeral Home Chapel in Paris with burial at Baxley cemetery in Paris.
She is survived by a son, Steve Cooley of Paris; four sisters, Elsie Hanan of Russellville, Orene Gattis and Sandy Rice, both of Paris and Freda Bean of Clarksville; a brother, Gerald Rice Paris; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Eddie Rietman, Michael Cruz, Cecil Bean, David Loveless, David Rice and Roger James.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Frances Wescott
Frances Ann Wescott, 77, of Van Buren died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in her home. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic church, the Ladies Alter Society and the widow of Willam Wescott.
Rosary will be 7 p.m. today at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren.
Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with burial at Gill cemetery in Van Buren.
She is survived by a son, William Wescott of Van Buren; a sister, Margaret Hupp of Gresham, Ore..
Pallbearers will be Todd Small, Charlie Curry, Ralph Brasuell, Greg Beyerle, Junior Earp and Roy Nichols.

Floy Martin
COAL HILL — Floy Elizabeth Martin, 93, of Coal Hill died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in Clarksville. She was born March 28, 1910, in Dover. She was a homemaker, a Baptist and the widow of Clyce Martin.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with burial at Coal Hill cemetery.
She is survived by three sons, Frankie Martin of Hot Springs, Willard Martin of Knoxville and Tommy Martin of Coal HIll; two sisters, Ann Wright of Tulsa and Hazel Vaught of Porterville, Calif.; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Rev. Elbert Taylor
SALLISAW — The Rev. Elbert F. “the blind preacher” Taylor, 75, of Sallisaw died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in Sallisaw. He was born Feb. 4, 1928, in Vian. He was a Korean War veteran, was a retired Baptist minister, preached at McKey over 10 years, Blunt Baptist for seven years, also at Gans Bible Church and First Baptist Church in Marble City, was self-employed auto mechanic in Marble City and worked at St. Clair Lime Co.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blunt Baptist Church north of Sallisaw with burial at Sallisaw City cemetery with military honors by American Legion under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
He is survived by his wife, Leota; two daughters, Shannon Taylor and Violet Barrett, both of Sallisaw; a son, Leon Taylor of Lewis, Colo.; two halfsisters, Betty Ward of Vian and Patsy Fargo of Jenks. Okla.; three halfbrothers, Samy Taylor of Vian, Frank and Jerry Taylor, both of Gans; and nine grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Leon Taylor Sr., Junior Kimbell, Les and Glen Reid, Derrall Taylor and Scott Dobbs.
The body may be viewed 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

Vuna Mayfield
COAL HILL — Vuna Mayfield, 92, of Coal Hill died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, in her home. She was born Sept. 8, 1910. She was a homemaker, a Baptist and the widow of Roy Mayfield.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with burial at Kendall cemetery north of Coal Hill.
she is survived by a son, Bob Mayfield of Coal Hill; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Paul and Mike Williams, Bobby and Jeremy Hatchett, Brian Robinson and Billy Reynolds.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m today at the funeral home.

Dwayne Travis
ARKOMA — Dewayne Tooter Travis, 40, of Arkoma died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in Arkoma. He was a Jehovah’s Witness.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Oak cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, mary; two daughters, Carolyn and Keira Travis, both of Arkoma; his mother, Ruby Travis of Fort Smith; two brothers, Marvin Travis of Fort Smith and Frank Travis of San Antonio.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m Wednesday at the funeral home.

Shelly Rinehart
GORE — Shelly D. Morgan Rinehart, 39, of Gore died Sunday, Aug. 2, 2003, in Sallisaw. She was born April 26, 1964, in Sallisaw. She was a 1982 graduate of Sallisaw High School, a assembly worker at Waterloo Industries in Muskogee, Okla.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Gore United Methodist Church with burial at White cemetery in Gore under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
She is survived by her husband, Dewey; two sons, Chase Myher of Gore and Devan Rinehart of the home; a stepson, Jason Rinehart of Fort Gibson, Okla.; her mother, Barbara Walls of Sallisaw, her father, Duane Morgan of Gore; a sister, Leslie Wade of Shreveport, La.; three brothers, Tommy Morgan of Sallisaw, Justin Morgan and Derrick Hornback, both of Gore; maternal grandparents, James and Opal Harden of Sallisaw.

Marie Holmes
Marie Holmes, 76, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was born Oct. 16, 1926, in Thornton, Texas. She attended schools in Mexia, Texas. She was retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Fort Smith. She was a member of East Side Baptist Church and was a member of Telephone Pioneers and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, James “Jimmy” Holmes of Fort Smith.

James Oliver
PARIS — James Horace Oliver, 83, of Paris, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the Assembly of God. He was the widower of Retta Mae Casey Oliver.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Roller Chapel in Paris with burial at McVay cemetery in Paris.
He is survived by three sons, Jerry Oliver of Clarksville, James Oliver of Russellville and Billy Oliver of Dardenelle; a sister Ester Reel of Paris; a brother, Raymond Oliver of Orville, Wash.; six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Paul Green, Darrell Turner, Butch James, Scotty Oliver, Wesley Oliver and Zachary Oliver.

Elizabeth Christian
POCOLA — Elizabeth Christian, 83, of Pocola died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was the widow of Henry Don Christian, a member of Pocola United Methodist Church and a secretary at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center for 20 years.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Pocola United Methodist Church with burial at Macedonia cemetery in Pocola under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by three sons, Jerry Christian Sr. and Don Christian, both of Fort Smith, and Jim Christian of Pocola; three sisters, Virginia Pipkin of Pocola, Mabel Warnock of Arkoma, and Patricia Dow of Fort Smith; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Stephen Christian, Phillip Christian, Jamie Christian, Shannon Christian, Jerry Christian Jr., and Darson Emory.

Bill Sparks
SUMMERLAND — Bill Sparks, 80, of the Summerland Community, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at home. He was born July 29, 1923, in the Summerland Community. He was a retired mechanic, a World War II Army veteran, a member of the Assembly of God and a member of the Bunch Walton Post No. 22 of the American Legion.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Lee’s Chapel Church with burial at Owens cemetery in Pope County under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home of Clarksville.
He is survived by his wife, Jewell Ragsdale Sparks; two daughters, Shirley Noyes and Aneta Mills, both of Russellville; two sons, Bob Sparks of Russellville and David Sparks of Clarksville; two sisters, Nova Rhodes and Ruby Baker, both of Mesa, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Sparks, Robbie Sparks, Steven Sparks, Scott King, Bryan Mills and Greg Sparks.
