Alice Ferguson
MENA — Alice Ferguson, 89, of Mena died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, in Mena. She was born Nov. 18, 1913, in Hillard Community near Board Camp. She worked several years at a produce stand at Cox Lake. She witched wells in the area and in Texas and Oklahoma. She was featured in several magazines, numerous articles written about her in several local newspapers, on several television shows. She was a member of Harmony Primitive Baptist Church and the widow of Lawson Ferguson.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Harmony Primitive Baptist Church in Mena with burial at Board Camp cemetery under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
She is survived by a daughter, Florene Coogan of Mena; one grandchild, three stepgrandchildren, one great-grandchild and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
General visitation will be at the funeral home.
Johnny Lindenau
POTEAU — Johnny Ray Lindenau, 43, of Poteau died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in Poteau. He was born July 16, 1960, in Poteau. He was a dispatcher for Poteau Police Department.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at First Assembly of God in Poteau with burial at Old Bokoshe cemetery under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by his wife, Lizabeth; two daughters, Megan Lindenau of the home and Kayla Hartsock of Poteau; two sisters, Marylee Bohannon of Poteau and Joyce Weaver of Glenpool, Okla.; two brothers, James Lindenau of Catoosa, Okla., and Fred Lindenau of Tulsa; and one grandchild.
The Poteau Police Department has established a fund to assist the family. Memorial contributions may be made to Community State Bank of Poteau.
Tilton Scott
FORT COFFEE — Tilton Scott, 76, of Fort Coffee died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003 in Oklahoma City. He was a member, usher and deacon of Mount Triumph Baptist Church, a lifetime member of the NAACP and was an Army veteran.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Triumph Baptist Church with burial at Fort Coffee cemetery under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Spiro.
He is survived by five daughters, Yvonnie Chambers and Esterene West, both of Oakland, Calif., Myrlene Steel and Rozella Scott, both of Oklahoma City and Angela Scott of Grand Prairie, Texas; six sons, Felton Scott of Fort Smith, Sandie Scott of Germany, Danny Scott of Chicago, Darnell and Tilton E. Scott, both of Fort Coffee, Okla., and Terrance Scott of Grand Prairie, Texas; three sisters, Minnie Kirven of Oklahoma City and Emma Johnson and Maureen Bristol, both of Wichita, Kan.; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
The body may be viewed 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Wednesday and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the funeral home.
Harriet Reynolds
BOONEVILLE — Harriet Reynolds, 81, of Booneville died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, in her home. She was a beautician and a member of Union Hall Baptist Church in Booneville.
Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Attica cemetery in Attica, Kan., under the direction of Roberts Funeral Home of Booneville.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry; two sons, James McClung of Pratt, Kan., and Perry McClung of Attica, Kan.; four grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, two great-grandchildren, three stepgreat-grandchildren, three stepdaughters and one stepson.
The family will visit today in the afternoon at the funeral home.
Fredrick Kearney
LITTLE ROCK — Fredrick A. Kearney, 60, of Little Rock died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, in Pine Bluff. He was born Feb. 11, 1943, in Paris. He was a 31 year veteran of the Army and retired as a full colonel. He had two tours in Vietnam, was stationed in Munich and Berlin, Germany where he was a 
military policeman at the Berlin Wall, was an instructor at the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., graduated from the US Army War College in Carlisle, Pa., had tours of duty at the Pentagon, was instructor and commandant of the Professional Education Center at Camp Robinson, in North Little Rock. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway and a master’s degree in personnel management from Webster College in St. Louis. He received two Legions of Merit, three Bronze Star Medals, the Purple Heart, Air Medal and Army Commendation Medal. He was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church, Association of the United States Army and Disabled American Veterans.
Vigil will be 7 p.m. today at North Little Rock Funeral Home in North Little Rock.
Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in North Little Rock with burial at Arkansas State Veterans cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; a daughter, Holly Scott of North Little Rock; four sisters, Luetta McCall of Oceanside, Calif., Frances Monroe of San Jose, Calif.., June Smith of Marble Falls and Dorothy Neumeier of Paris; three brothers, John Kearney of San Antonio, Joseph Kearney of Paris and William Kearney of Fayetteville; and one grandchild.

S. Michael Hirsch
HOUSTON — S. Michael Hirsch, 64, of Houston died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, in a local hospital. He was a business and education consultant.
The body was cremated under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
He is survived by his wife, Janet; two daughters, Marsha Hirsch of Van Buren and Sheila Hirsch of San Antonio; a son, Gregory Hirsch of Addison, Texas; his mother, Vivian Bigelow of Silver Spring, Md.; and two grandchildren.
William Blackman
CLARKSVILLE — William “Blackie” Blackman, 82, of Clarksville, formerly of Greenville, Miss., died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, in Clarksville. He was born Feb. 6, 1920, in Vernon, Texas. He was a deacon and member of First Baptist Church, a retired policeman and an Army veteran of World War II.
Memorial service will be 7 p.m. today at First Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home of Clarksville.
He is survived by two sons, Bill Blackman of Hernando, Miss., and Bruce Blackman of Roswell, Ga.; three sisters, six brothers, several grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Charles Pigg
Charles Pigg, 75, of Van Buren died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003. He was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Post No. 31, past grand knight of Knights of Columbus, a charter member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, a retired Navy veteran and the Department of Human Services in Van Buren. He was the widower of Frances Pigg.
Rosary will be 7 p.m. today at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren.
Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith with military honors.
He is survived by two daughters, Marie Verspille of Van Buren and Sandra Wise of Fort Smith; a son, Charles Pigg of Las Vegas; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
David Hayes
MULBERRY — David Hayes, 64, of Mulberry died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, in Ozark. He was born May 12, 1939, in Hiram. He was a truck driver for Penske Trucking and an Army veteran.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hight cemetery in Mulberry under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.
He is survived by his wife, Tessa; two daughters, Lisa Woodall of Austin and Lana Poe of Pangburn; a son, Tim Hayes of Cabot; three stepchildren, Stephanie Hudson of Paris and Ricky and Shannon Dool, both of Mulberry; a sister, Kay Taylor of Wilburn; four brothers, Charles Hayes of Cabot, Steve, Sherrill and Ricky Hayes, all of Wilburn; and seven grandchildren.
Leonard Burkett
HEMET, Calif. — Leonard Burkett, 78, of Hemet, Calif., formerly of Van Buren, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, in Hemet. He was a retired farmer.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at White cemetery in Fort Chaffee under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
Lee Gwin
GREENWOOD — Lee Gwin, 61, of Greenwood died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was a retired Southern Baptist minister, a member of Burnville Baptist Church and the widower of Mary Gwin.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood with burial at Liberty cemetery in Greenwood.
He is survived by a daughter, Charlene Tibbits of Greenwood; a son, William Gwin of Midland; a sister, Elnora Mobbs of Amarillo, Texas; and seven grandchildren.
The body may be viewed 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Emily M. Bryan
Emily M. Bryan, 94, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was the devoted wife of Lemuel C. Bryan, who preceded her in death in January after 56 years of marriage. She was a Navy veteran of World War II, served on the Sparks Hospital Women’s Board, was a Junior League of Fort Smith Sustainer and was active at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at St. John’s Episcopal Church with burial at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a niece, Kathryn O. Why; a nephew, James W. Oram Jr.; four great nephews, Gregory R. Why, Andrew O. Why, J. Marshall Oram and Brook B. Oram; and three great nieces, Jamie McLean Russo, Suzanne McLean Stenberg and Leslie W. Reap.
Pallbearers will be Doug Smith, Bob Meek, Brad Jesson, Jim Oram and Ben and Bryan Cabell.

Grace Neff
Grace Neff, 99, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, in Van Buren. She was born Oct. 11, 1904, in Huntington to Aaron and Sarah Waldt. She was a retired owner of Grace’s Flower Shop and a lifelong resident of Fort Smith. She was a member of the Lutheran Church, the Order of the Eastern Star and Amrita Caldron. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold “Ted” Neff.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at Forest Park cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Law Hughes and her husband, Glen of Fort Smith; two granddaughters, Marsha Crowder and her husband, Mike of Fort Smith and Nancy Scharbor and her husband, Paul of Fort Smith; a great-granddaughter, Payton Scharbor of Fort Smith.
Cletus May Burks
Cletus May Burks, 85, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, in a local nursing home. She was a homemaker and a Presbyterian. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo T. Burks.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003 at Putman Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by five daughters and their husbands, Ara and Darrell Cromwell of Fort Smith, Terri Ann and Ronnie Biggs of Siloam Springs, Mitzi and Fred Van Orsdol of Okemah, Okla., Annette and John Kagen of Fort Smith and Jeanette and Mike Cotton of Van Buren; two sisters, Jewel E. Lawton of Coweta, Okla. and Clemmie Buckner of Stillwell, Okla.; 10 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
Minnie Metcalf
Minnie Metcalf, 96, of Charleston died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, in Booneville. She was born July 21, 1907, in Charleston to Rett Hawkins and Pearl Workman and a member of Branch First Free Will Baptist Church. She lived most of her life in Charleston. She was the beloved matriarch of the Metcalf family and was the inspiration and strength for her children and was remembered by her grandchildren with hugs at the door, hot meals and gifts of beautiful handmade quilts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Con Metcalf, her parents, Rett and Pearl Hawkins, a brother, B.J. Hawkins and a sister, Ethel Waggoner.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at Smith Mortuary Chapel in Charleston with burial at Potts cemetery south of Charleston.
She is survived by three daughters, Maxine Terry and Wayland Beard, both of Charleston, and Patsy Lairamore of Pocola; a son, Ronald Metcalf of Fort Smith; two brothers, Walt Hawkins of Booneville and Lealon Hawkins of Charleston; 14 grandchildren, Bruce, Randy, Dennis and Mark Terry, Suzanne Fruchtnicht, Loren and Jennifer Swearingen, Stephen Swearingen, Michael Lairamore, Melissa Timms, Sarah and Clint Metcalf and Kevin and Scott Smreker; 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Madge Louise Warner Hale
Madge Louise Warner Hale, 96, of Fort Smith passed away Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, in Fort Smith. Madge was the widow of Earl C. Hale. She was born May 27, 1907, in Midland, Sebastian County and was the only child of Walter and Mable Warner. She attended the University of New Mexico and the University of Missouri, where she was a member of Chiornega. She completed school at the University of Arkansas.
Madge married
Earl Hale of Krebs, Okla. on Dec. 9, 1941 in Fort Smith where they made their home. She worked in the communications department at Fort Chaffee for many years. She was a member of Goddard United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Gradon Hale of McAlester, Okla.; one nephew-in-law, Melvin Clyde Sittel of Amarillo, Texas; two nieces-in-law, Gail Ratcliff Scott of Amarillo, Texas, and Jane Karen Hale Talbot of McAlester, Okla.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Forest Park cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
