Tula “Mutt” Bell
Tula “Mutt” Bell of Washburn was born Dec. 3, 1903, and passed away on Nov. 26, 2003, just one week short of her 100th birthday.
She was the widow of Hugh Bell, retired owner of Bell Grocery in Washburn. She was a member of Washburn United Methodist Church.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Washburn United Methodist Church in Washburn with burial at Bell cemetery in Washburn under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
She is survived by a son, George Bell, and daughter-in-law, Charleen, of Washburn; five grandchildren, Debbie Cumbie, Judy Dedmon and Frank, Robert and David Bell; nine great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Lance, John and Bobby Bell, Kyle Cumbie, Eric Goodwin and Tim Dedmon.
George Robert “Dobber” McKinney
George Robert “Dobber” McKinney, 67, of Jenny Lind died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, in his home. Mr. McKinney was of the Assembly of God faith and a 32nd degree Mason with membership in the Jenny Lind Lodge No. 503 F&AM and the Western Arkansas Consistory. He owned and operated a janitorial business, serving Camp Chaffee at one time and many other local establishments.
Mr. McKinney was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Roy Gene and Bobby McKinney. He is survived by three sons, Robert McKinney and his wife Audrey and Daryn McKinney and his wife Donna, all of Fort Smith, and Brian McKinney of Jenny Lind; three brothers, Sammy McKinney of Booneville, Allen McKinney of Lavaca and Jimmy McKinney of Horseshoe Bend; one sister, Darla Vandermillion of Rye Hill; and five grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood, followed by interment with Masonic rites at Steep Hill cemetery. Pallbearers will be fellow Masons of the Jenny Lind Lodge No. 503 F&AM.
Visitation for Mr. McKinney will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Elsie Ruby Wright Acord
Elsie Ruby Wright Acord, age 87, of Alma died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, in a local nursing home. She was born June 28, 1916, in Center Ridge. She was a retired nurse’s aide at Crawford Memorial Hospital in Van Buren and was a member of the Alma First Freewill Baptist Church.
Her husband, Price Acord, a daughter, Menna Sue Acord, and a son, Larry Acord, preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Dyer cemetery in Dyer.
She is survived by two daughters, Doris Jordan of Mulberry and Barbara Toney of Spartanburg, S.C.; one son, Darrell Acord of Montgomery, Ala.; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Kyle Phillips, Clayton Wells, Nathan Morgan, Eric Singleton, Bo Vance and Smiley Garcia.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, 4100 Alma Highway, Van Buren.
Ruth L. Carmack
Ruth L. Carmack, 87, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was a retired employee of the Sebastian County Courthouse where she served 12 years as the Sebastian County clerk and 10 years as the Sebastian County probation officer. She was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church and an elder and Sunday School teacher; she served on the Democratic Central Committee for Sebastian County and was a member of the League of Women Voters and the UCT Women’s Club.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Bland of Fort Smith; four sons, Bill Carmack of Rogers, Gary Carmack and John Carmack, both of Fort Smith, and Jim Carmack of Pueblo, Colo.; four sisters, Blanch Pryor, Betty Kersey and Joy Edwards, all of Greenwood, and Wilda Jones of Obetz, Ohio; and 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Randy Kersey, Don Oliver, Charles Durham, and Joe, Tom and Jim Parker.

Clifford Cyrus
Clifford Cyrus, 78, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003 in his home. He was born Aug. 9, 1925, in Holden, W.V., was a retired engineer for Owens Illinois Glass Inc., a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church and a World War II Veteran. Clifford was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac and Nannie Cyrus, one brother and two sisters.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Elizabeth of the home; two sons Roger of Fort Smith, and Rick of Van Buren; three sisters, Edna Bishop of Rittman, Ohio, Joan Ellis of Wooster, Ohio, and Janet Rowland of Akron, Ohio; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be James Goddard, Henry Cline, Joe Richardson, Roy Goodin, Gordon Chitwood and Arl Cross. Honorary pallbearers will be the Otha Law Sunday School class.
Funeral service will be at noon Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.

Mr. Brad Wheeler
Mr. Brad Wheeler, age 40, of Van Buren died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, in an area hospital. He was a driver for Central Redi-Mix in Springdale and was a Navy veteran.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
He is survived by his wife Theresa of the home; three daughters, Lakin France, Londin Wheeler and Logan Wheeler, all of the home. He is also survived by his mother, Latrelle Wheeler of Alma; his father and stepmother, Darrel and Kay Wheeler of Mulberry; and four brothers, Todd Wheeler of Van Buren, Marc Wheeler of Harrison, and Brent and Jason Wheeler, both of Alma.
Marie E. Anhalt
Marie E. Anhalt, 88, of New Blaine died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, in Fort Smith. She was the wife of the late of George J. Anhalt.
She was an active member of St. Scholastica Church, Shoal Creek, a Eucharistic minister and former president of the Catholic Women’s Union and St. Anne’s Society. She volunteered at Subiaco Abby and in the caring and sharing program at St. Augustine Church in Dardenelle.
Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at St. Scholastica Catholic Church, Shoal Creek. Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at St. Scholastica Catholic Church with burial at St. Scholastica cemetery under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.
She is survived by a daughter, Alice Schluterman of Paris; two sons, Leo and Martine Anhalt of Fort Smith; a sister, Rose Koch of Paris; three brothers, Joe Fritsche of Scranton, Ben Frietsche(cq) of Fort Smith, and George Fritsche of Booneville; and 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Ann Nita Newman
Ann Nita Newman, 93, of Booneville died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, in Booneville. She was a longtime member and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Oklahoma City, and a teacher in the Oklahoma City School system. She was a member of the National China Painting Guild, the AAUW, the Sugar Grove EHC, the Booneville Garden Club, the Hospital Auxiliary, and First Baptist Church Sunday school. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hindman and Viola Burris, her husband, Henry Otis Newman, and five brothers and sisters.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Tishomingo, Okla., with a memorial service at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at First Baptist Church in Booneville under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Booneville.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Mike Burk of Booneville and Sherry and Varley Taylor of Tulsa; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Martin, Ann Taylor, Bill Burke, Ty Taylor and Rush Taylor; and five great-grandchildren, Sarah and Roby Martin and Joe, Jim and Vada Burk.

William M. Lemley
William M. Lemley, age 76, of Russellville died at his home Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born June 30, 1927, in Russellville to the late William Forrest and Mary Tygart Lemley. He was a fifth-generation Lemley to be raised and live in Pope County.
Bill was a 1949 graduate of Hendrix College, and received his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. A certified public accountant since 1958, he was an original incorporator of Arkansas Valley Industries, Inc. (AV) and served as an officer and member of the board of directors until 1964 when he opened his private practice as a CPA.
Bill joined the Arkansas Tech University faculty in 1967. He served as dean of the School of Systems Science from 1973 to 1982. For 18 years, he served as Tech’s faculty representative to the AIC and as eligibility chairman for District 17 of the NAIA. He was the original faculty advisor for Lambda Chi Alpha Social Fraternity. He retired from full-time teaching in 1992. However, he happily returned to teach introduction to business during the fall of 2002. He received the Arkansas Tech Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award in 1994.
During his career, he participated and served as chairman of many civic fund drives. He was a past president of Russellville Rotary Club, a past director of Russellville Chamber of Commerce and past director of the Russellville Country Club.
He was a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the Arkansas Society of CPAs and the Valley Chapter of CPA’s.
For more than 50 years, he had been an active member of First United Methodist Church of Russellville. He had served on many committees and boards and taught Sunday School classes for many years. He served on the board of directors for First National Bank of Russellville, the First Commercial Corp. of Little Rock, and later, the Regions Bank Corporate board.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty Lemley Gardner (Mrs. Ellis); and a nephew, Judge Dick Gardner.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Wadena Scott Lemley; a daughter, Myra Lemley Nunley and her husband, Richard of Ventura, Calif.; two grandsons, Ian Williams and Dylan Scott Nunley of Ventura, Calif.; his nieces and nephews; Jackie Gardner of Russellville, Guy and Brigita Gardner, Wade and Carol Scoot, and Joel and Deanna Scott, all of Little Rock; Mary and Barry Erwin of Monroe, La.; Cara and Brooks Witherspoon of Alma; and David and Sydney Scott and Amy Hammond, all of Dallas.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mackey Yokem and the Rev. Matthew Johnson officiating. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Shinn Funeral Service of Russellville.
Active pallbearers will be Wade H. Scott III, Joel Scott, David Scott, Brooks Witherspoon, John Sorrels and Dudley Taylor.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, and immediately after the memorial service in the church’s fellowship hall.

Leon J. Sparks Sr.
Leon J. Sparks Sr., 88, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, in Fort Smith. Known to his close friends as Sparky. He was retired from the Carpenters Union No. 71 after 50 years as a construction superintendent. He was a manager of Olympic Health Club for 18 years and a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fort Smith.
Rosary service will be 7 p.m. today at Fentress Mortuary Chapel.
Mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fort Smith with burial at Holy Cross cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 60 yeas, Ruth Sparks; two sons, Leon Sparks Jr. and his wife, Linda of Fort Smith and Paul Sparks and his companion, Dena Clowe of Fort Smith; seven grandchildren, Craig Sparks, Kyle Sparks, Kelli Doss and her husband, Clay, Kimberly Sparks, Carmen Sparks, Rachel Sparks and Danielle Hasty. He is also survived by one great-grandchild, Samantha Doss; and several nieces and nephews.

Dennis Walter Crane
Dennis Walter Crane, 58, of Scranton died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003. He was a coach and teacher and a member of the First Assembly of God where he served as a deacon, trustee and a church choir member. He was interested in all sports and was an avid horseback rider, and a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Equine Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Franklin and Viola Clara Moore Crane; and a brother, Ronald Edgar Crane.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday Dec. 4, 2003 at First Assembly of God in Paris with burial at McKendree cemetery in Subiaco under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Lynn O’Bar Crane of Scranton; two daughters. Dena Renee Street of Scranton and Dawn Marie Crane of Scranton; a son, Dennis Jason Crane of Danville; one grandson, Joshua Street of Scranton.
