Jewell Mae Nuckolls
Jewell Mae Nuckolls, 85, of Ozark went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003. Born Oct. 16, 1918, at Mountain Top. She was the daughter of the late William and Lillie Magby. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Owen “Bud” Nuckolls, six brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Suter of Russellville; two sons, Dennis Nuckolls of Dyer and Dellis Nuckolls of Ozark; three brothers, Carl Magby of Porum, Okla., twin brother, Ewell Magby of Clarksville and Hanford Magby of Anderson, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Shaffer Funeral Home in Ozark with burial at Oakgrove cemetery with the Rev. Steve Sawrie officiating.
Pallbearers will be Robert, Benny, John and Arden Magby, Henry and Charles Cagle.
Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Magby, Harmon Cagle, Bill Alexander and Danny Stepp.
Juanita Moody
Juanita Moody of Fort Smith passed peacefully into God’s kingdom, Monday, Dec. 16, 2002. The past few years of her illness were difficult for her and her husband, but they did not complain.
Juanita was born to Walter and Myrtle Graham Lovell, Oct. 8, 1922, in Lavaca. She attended school in Lavaca and graduated from Cavanaugh High School. She met and began dating her husband, Cleo, in 1936. They were married
Sept. 25, 1941 and blessed with their only child, Shirlie, in 1942. Juanita picked cotton as a child to help support her family and worked for Esquire Jewelers during World War II to help support herself and her daughter, as well as her husband’s parents, with whom they lived while he served overseas. When her husband returned home, she supplemented their income, selling women’s shoes and health products. Primarily, she was a wonderful family person, mother, wife and homemaker. Her main purpose in life was the care and protection of her family. Juanita was a Christian and an active member of Temple Baptist Church in Fort Smith. She was well known in Fort Smith business community, having sold real estate with Sagely & Bennett, now Sagely & Edwards Realtor, for more than 25 years. She was a graduate of the Real Estate Institute, a member of the Arkansas Women’s Council of Real Estate and the Arkansas Realtor’s Association.
Juanita is survived by Cleo, her beloved husband of 61 years, and her daughter and son-in-law, Shirlie and David Romans of Dora whom she cherished. Called “Mamanite” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she considered herself blessed with two grandsons, Earl Fears of Fort Smith and Tony Fears of Austin, Texas, and three great-grandchildren, whom she adored, Ava, Tarrah and Antony Fears II, all of the Fort Smith area. Her sisters, Almeda Whittington of Lexington, Ky., also survives her.
She and her husband, Cleo, had enough love to be supportive to their many nieces and nephews. Always ready and willing to help, they are much loved by their family and friends.
A celebration of Juanita’s life will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Temple Baptist Church, 5100 S. 31st St. in Fort Smith. Her earthly vessel was cremated by her family-owned business, River Valley Crematory, and will be interred at a later date at the U.S. National cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She was a wonderfully fun, kind and loving woman. She had a gift for loving people who were difficult to love and made them know she loved them.
“Mamanite” will be missed.
Raymond E. Sponel
Raymond E. Sponel, 59, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, in Fort Smith. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Fort Smith.
Mass will be 10 a.m. today at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fort Smith. A committal service will be 1 p.m. at St. Scholastica cemetery in Shoal Creek under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his mother, Anna Raef of Fort Smith; and his uncle, Gilbert Sponel of Dardanelle.
Pallbearers will be Frankie and William Sponel, Ray and Eugene Ahlert, Claude Eubanks and Nelson Wakefield.

POCOLA — Kenneth L. Wright Jr., 49, of Pocola died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, in a local hospital. He was born Jan. 28, 1953, in Fort Bragg, N.C. He was an employee of Woods Products.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Christian Grove Free Will Baptist Church in Pocola with burial at Macedonia cemetery in Pocola under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
He survived by a son, Kenneth L. Wright III of Scotsdale, Ariz.; his mother, Virginia Wright of Pocola; a sister, Brenda Simco of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a brother, Mike Wright of Omaha, Neb.
Pallbearers will be Tom, Aaron, Charles, Johnny Kenny and Jay Pipkins.
Loy Richey
DYER — Loy Lee Richey, 56, of Dyer died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, in Van Buren. He was born Sept. 13, 1946, in Zavola, Texas. He was a retired draggling operator for Jeffrey’s Sand & Gravel.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Liberty Fellowship Church with burial at Dyer cemetery under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Mulberry.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby; five daughters, Patricia and Elizabeth Koiser, both of Alma, Maria Mersberger of Fort Smith, Lawonda Varnell of Houston and Melissa Varnell of Louisiana; a son, Gary Richey of Mulberry; his mother, Roby Cowan of Dyer; a sister, Dora Bell of Dyer; a brother, James Monroe Richey of Buffalo, Mo.; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Doris Varnell, Kenneth Rosson, Destry and Wayne Leakey and Gary Richey.

Arvel Honea
ALTUS — Arvel Otto Honea, 90, of Altus died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Fort Smith. He was born July 28, 1912, in Ozark. He was a retired coal miner and a Pentecostal.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with burial at Baxley cemetery in Paris.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria; two daughters, Ann Scott and Lois Rogers, both of Paris; two sons, Gaylan Hones of Etna and Roger Lee Honea of Ozark; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Robert Barker Jr.
Robert Ray Barker Jr., 45, of Fort Smith died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in Fort Smith. He was a member of Harvest Time Tabernacle in Fort Smith and was a manager for H&R Pawn.

Edith Frala
SHANNON HILLS — Edith E. Frala, 90, of Shannon Hills, formerly of Clarksville, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Clarksville, Johnson Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star and Mount Olive Extension Club. She was the widow of James A. Frala.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Clarksville with burial at Oakland cemetery in Clarksville under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home of Clarksville.
She is survived by two sons, Jim Frala of Shannon Hills and Tommy Frala of Missouri; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Wanda Melton
ROWLETT, Texas — Wanda June Melton, 69, of Rowlett, Texas, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Rowlett. She was born Aug. 27, 1933, in Heavener. She graduated from Heavener High School, was a homemaker and worked as a baker.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Grace Manor Memorial Chapel in Poteau with burial at Heavener Memorial Park in Heavener.
She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Douglas of Kissimee, Fla., and Linda Sanders of Forney, Texas; six sons, Randy and Dooley Melton of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Bruce Melton of Cedar Creek Lake, Texas, Brian Melton of Point, Texas, Terry Melton of Eustace, Texas, and Scott Melton of Austin, Texas; a sister, Jean Luman of Heavener; a brother, Roger Prather of Florida; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Randy, Dooley, Bruce, Brian, Terry and Scott Melton.
Ted Efurd
Ted Efurd of Greenwood died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at age 72. He was born in Sebastian County on March 5, 1930, to Relf Sr. and Alta Holland Efurd. He was raised in Sebastian County, where he developed a love for animals, especially horses. He spent much of his childhood riding horses in what later became Fort Chaffee. In 1948, he graduated from Greenwood High School and soon joined the Army. He married
his childhood sweetheart, Verna Lee Brown, of Greenwood in 1949. After two years of duty in the Army and two years in Greenwood, Ted and Verna moved themselves and their two sons, Ken and Jerry to Sunray, Texas, where Ted went to work for Shamrock Oil and Gas. They returned to Greenwood in 1966, and Ted later went to work for Harding Glass in Fort Smith. In 1977, after completing welding course work at Westark Community College, he opened Efurd’s Welding Service, where he worked until his retirement in 1992. Ted was deacon at the First Baptist Churches in Sunray and Greenwood. He was a member of the Sebastian County Mounted Patrol. In Greenwood, he was a city council member, past president of the Greenwood Roundup Club, Police Commission, maintained the deer pens on the town square, installed and maintained the clock in the city’s bell tower. He was a member of Greenwood United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Verna Lee Brown Efurd; two sons, Ken of Baton Rouge, La., and Jerry and his wife, Susan of Greenwood; a sister, Doris Vivian Amos of Duncanville, Texas; two brothers, Charles of Greenwood and Danny of Marino Valley, Calif.; a stepmother, Maggie Efurd of Witcherville; three stepbrothers, Cecile and Cyril Cabe, both of Greenwood, and Johnny Cabe of Witcherville. He had five grandchildren, Ryan, Hillary, Meredith, Austin and Harrison. He was preceded in death by his brother, Relf Efurd Jr.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Greenwood with burial at Liberty cemetery in Greenwood under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Gerald Amos Jr., Carlton and Paul Efurd, Jackie Earl and Jimmie Dale Brown, Gary Vaughn, Steve Brown and Donnie Sandifer. Marvin Peter Hilden
Marvin Peter Hilden, 87, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in a local hospital. He was born March 6, 1915, in Sinac, S.D. He was a retired foreman for West Lock and a member of Albert Pike Christian Church. He was preceded in death by two sons, David and Raymond. He was raised in South Dakota and moved to California. In 1977 he moved to Fort Smith, where he raised his family and lived for the remainder of his life. We all loved you, Pop.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Albert Pike Christian Church with burial at Forest Park cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anna; a daughter, Janet Figueroa of Ontario, Calif.; two sons, Dale of Fort Smith and Rodger of Greenwood; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Ruth Edwards
Ruth Edwards, 70, of Fort Smith died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, in Van Buren. She was a wedding co-ordinator for T. P. Davis Bridal Studios, a member of West-Ark Church of Christ and the widow of Charles Curtis Edwards.

She is survived by a son, Larry Edwards of Fort Smith; her mother, Elsie Harrison of Conway; a brother, Kenneth Harrison of Greers Ferry; two sisters-in-law, Dixie Harrison of Greers Ferry and Phyllis Tucker of Sherwood; and four grandchildren, Brooke, David, Jill and Matt Edwards.
Willie Kilgore
Willie Kilgore, 79, of Pocola died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Greenwood. He was a lifelong resident of the Pocola and Cedars area, atending schools in Plainview and Cedars, was a retired mechanic employed by Fred Ladage Tire and Battery in Fort Smith and worked at Good Canning Co. and Fort Chaffee Bakery. He was a member of Evangel Temple in Fort Smith and the American Legion post in Poteau. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 28th Pennsylvania Army National Guard Infantry Division, 229th Field Artillery Keystone “Bloody Bucket” Division in Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Battle of the Bulge. He loved his country, family, animals, gardening, fishing and traveling. He married
his wife, Emily, April 28, 1948, in Salinas, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold Ben “Jim” Kilgore of Cedars, and Lucy Vena Davis “Dolly” Kilgore of Searcy County, and two brothers, Afred Kilgore and William Odis “Bill” Kilgore.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Evangel Temple in Fort Smith with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
