Leonard H. Moulden
Leonard H. Moulden, 89, a 12-year resident of Van Buren, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Van Buren. After an enlistment in the Army, he served as a World War II Navy pilot and continued his aviation interests as a flight instructor while working as a high school teacher for nearly 50 years in Topeka, Kan., and Hayward, Calif. A lifelong public servant, he was locally active at St. Michael’s Church and the Van Buren Senior Center.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Bertha Shedd Moulden; his brother, Forrest Moulden of Strafford, Mo.; his son, John Moulden of Stockton, Calif.; and granddaughters Kari Moulden of Oakland, Calif., and May Moulden of Portland, Ore. He will be dearly missed by his entire extended family and friends.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ocker Funeral Home Chapel in Van Buren with burial at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
Katherine Henderson “Katie” Smithson
Katherine Henderson “Katie” Smithson, 76, a member of an early Fort Smith family, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004. Katie was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Dorothy Little Henderson.
Katie was a 1959 graduate of Randolph-Macon Women’s College of Lynchburg, Va., where she received her B.A. in English. She received her master’s degree in special education from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, a lifelong Episcopalian and a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild. She was a member of the Junior League of Fort Smith and served on the board of Habitat for Humanity, where she volunteered. Katie was known for her intellect and her love of books as well as her keen wit. She was a special education teacher at Northside High School for 20 years. Her love of her family and her students was evident to her many friends.
She is survived by two sons, Lt. Col. Gray and wife Michelle Smithson of Atlanta and Lt. Col. Lee Smithson and wife Betty of Jackson, Miss.; two daughters, Polly Smithson and her partner Max Cloninger of Fort Smith and Betsy and her husband Brian Robinson of Fort Smith; two sisters, Dotty Peters of Fort Smith and Linnah Schoen of Minneapolis; and six grandchildren, Natalie, Andrea, Ann, Jack, William and Wyatt.
Memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church with entombment at St. John’s Columbarium under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
The family will greet friends in the Parish Hall following the service.

Linda D. Jiles
Linda D. Jiles, 41, of Spiro died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, in Poteau. She was a wonderful woman and mother and a former employee of HealthSouth of Fort Smith.
The body will be cremated. No formal service will be held.
She is survived by three daughters, Tamara and Mariah Jiles and Kayla Tong, all of Fort Smith; two sons, Derek Tong and Bryan Jiles, both of Fort Smith; four sisters, Sarah Johnson of Muldrow, Brenda Barnes and Wanda Bennett, both of Roland, and Delores Jiles; and a brother, Raymond Jiles of Muldrow.

Evelyn M. Britt
Evelyn M. Britt, 87, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Fort Smith. She was a retired realtor for Britt Realty and retired manager of Gaslight Gifts in Central Mall. She was a member of Goddard United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Mires Britt Sr., and a son, Carl Mires Britt II.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with graveside service 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elmwood cemetery in Morrilton.
She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Ludington and her husband Samuel R. Ludington Jr. of Fort Smith and Jo Claire Emerson and her husband Jim Emerson of La Mesa, Calif.; two sisters, Lola M. Hays of Hot Springs and Cathryn Harrison of Springdale; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

James Russell Young
James Russell Young, 53, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in a local hospital. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Church of Christ, a Marine veteran and a Wal-Mart associate.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren.
He is survived by his mother, Emmaloisa Welch of Oklahoma City; three sisters, Freda Van Ginkel of Fort Smith, Marcia Martin of Augusta, Ga., and Glenda Wilkinson of Oklahoma City; two brothers, Charles Lee Young of Fort Smith and Lesley Welch of Bakersfield, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will visit with friends from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home, 700 Jefferson St., Van Buren.
Henry Batchelor
Henry Batchelor, 96, of Van Buren died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, in a local nursing home. He was a member of the Wood Memorial Christian Church, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Uniontown Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rites. He was a former Crawford County clerk, a lifelong resident of Crawford County and the widower of Gertrude Batchelor. He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Fines, Lonnie and George Batchelor.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with Masonic graveside service at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
He is survived by a daughter, Norma Jean Batchelor Paugh of Apollo Beach, Fla.; a son, Arvel Glen “A.G.” Batchelor of Huntington Beach, Calif.; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Bill Vickery, Judge Jerry Williams, Frank Neal Jr., Jim Atwell, Lois Harris and Vernon D. Russell.
Honorary pallbearers will be Masons.
Alton Scantling
CATOOSA, Okla. — Alton Wayne Scantling, 61, of Catoosa, Okla., died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004. He was born July 16, 1942, in Sugar Grove. He was an electronics technician for the U.S. Postal Service and served in the Air Force.
Funeral was Wednesday at Freeman Harris Funeral Home Chapel in Tulsa with burial at Fort Gibson National cemetery in Fort Gibson, Okla.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda; three daughters, Gina Schuller and Gail Benjamin, both of Spokane, Wash., and Meghan Scantling; three sons, Grant Scantling of Spokane, Christian Scantling of Oregon and Andy Scantling; two stepsons, Dr. Kyle Gambrell of Philadelphia and Landon Gambrell of Tulsa; his mother, Dorothy Scantling of Booneville; three sisters, Helen Griffin of Cuernavaca, Mexico, Joyce Cone of Booneville and Linda Wiland of Tulsa; a brother, James Scantling of Elizabethtown, Ill.; and 12 grandchildren.
Norman Westermann
Dr. Norman F. Westermann, 75, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, in Evansville, Ind. He had a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock and an undergraduate degree from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia. He was an anesthesiologist for more than 50 years. He worked at Sparks Regional Medical Center, St. Edward Mercy Medical Center and Crawford Memorial Hospital in Van Buren as well as hospitals in Hot Springs, Texarkana, Texas, and Evansville. He also operated a private practice specializing in pain management. He was a Navy veteran, member of the Arkansas Medical Society, Sebastian County Medical Society, Goddard United Methodist Church and the Master Gardener’s Society and past member of the American Society of Anesthesiology. He was a volunteer for the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Goddard United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be held at a later date at Memorial Gardens in Hot Springs under the direction of Alexander East Chapel of Evansville.
He is survived by a daughter, Kathi Frieberg of Little Rock; a son, Eric Westermann of Canyon, Texas; his mother, Hilda Westermann; two brothers, Carl and Roy Westermann, both of Hot Springs; and four grandchildren.

Wade Cofer
POTEAU — Wade Cofer, 93, of Poteau died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004. He was born March 18, 1910. He worked for Powell’s Bakery and drove a delivery truck for Mel-O-Toast before being elected street commissioner for Poteau in 1953. He was a member of First Assembly of God in Poteau.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Evans and Miller Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Poteau with burial at Oakland cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Esther; three daughters, Wadene Ward and Shirley Slate, both of Paris, Texas, and Anita Barber of Poteau; two sons, David Cofer of Hennessey, Okla., and Ron Cofer of Poteau; a brother, Harold Cofer of Corpus Christi, Texas; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Podie Meeks, Denver Adams, Larry Garrett, Carrel Vaughn, Doug Stone and Harrell Bright.
Cotton Ashworth
CHARLESTON — Cotton Ashworth, 82, of Charleston died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, in Van Buren. He was born Jan. 14, 1921, in Stigler. He was a Baptist, a self-employed buildng contractor, a member of the VFA and the American Legion and an Army veteran of World War II. He received several medals, including the Bronze Star. He donated his body to medical science.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. today at Smith Mortuary Chapel in Charleston.
He is survived by his wife, Mary of Fort Smith; a daughter, Debbie Ashworth-Hoffman of Van Buren; three sons, Tom and Chris Ashworth, both of Fort Smith and Richard Ashworth of Herndon, Va.; three sisters, Maxine Rucker of Norman, Okla., Ella Ledford of Fort Smith and Audrey Nolan of Jenny Lind; three brothers, Leon Ashworth of Fayetteville, James Ashworth of Central City and Billy Ashworth of Van Buren; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Earl “Sparky” Sparks, 75, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in a local nursing home. He was a truck driver for the Coop and an Army veteran.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Edwards Van-Alma Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gill cemetery in Van Buren.
He is survived by his wife, Edna; four daughters, Billie Thasker of Fort Smith, Pamela Norried of Van Buren, Jo Ellen Simmons of Rudy and Angela Aldridge of Van Buren; a sister, Bonnie Dempsey of Van Buren; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Susan Proffitt
OZARK — Susan Mary Proffitt, 50, of Ozark died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in a local hospital. She was born May 15, 1953, in Hartford, Wis. She was a homemaker and a member of Webb City Baptist Church.
Graveside service will be 4 p.m. today at cemetery Ridge in Ozark under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.
She is survived by a daughter, Kelly Proffitt of the home; her father, Emmett Proffitt of the home; three sisters, Kathy Dunkel, Mary Standridge and Jean McKenna, all of Ozark; and three brothers, Mike Proffitt of Beckley, W.Va., and Patrick and William Proffitt, both of Ozark.
Doris Pavlich
SPIRO — Doris Jean Pavlich, 54, of Spiro, Okla., died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, in a local hospital. She was born Aug. 28, 1949, in Kansas City, Mo. She was a homemaker.
Cremation will be under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith. Memorial service will be at a later date.
She is survived by her husband, J.D. Irwin; a daughter, Melissa Pavlich of Spiro; and three sisters, Donna Huddleston of Austin, Texas, and Darlene Conn and Diana Owens, both of Spiro.

POTEAU — J.C. Thomas, 80, of Poteau died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, in a local hospital. He was born July 21, 1923, in Panama. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Poteau. He taught school for more than 35 years and was a principal and administrator.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Evans and Miller Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Poteau with burial at Oakland cemetery in Poteau.
He is survived by his wife, Luella; two daughters, Lynda Archey of Cameron, Okla., and Sherry Weatherred of Crowel, Texas; a son, Chris Thomas of Oklahoma City; a sister, Mausolean Dorse of Gore; and five grandchildren.

POTEAU — Irene Elizabeth Schrodt, 92, of Poteau died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, in a local hospital. She was born Oct. 23, 1911, in Poteau. She was a sales clerk, a member of Southside Baptist Church and the widow of Willard Schrodt.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Evans and Miller Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Poteau with burial at Oakland cemetery in Poteau.
She is survived by a sister, Marie Schrodt of Poteau.
