Katherine Smithson
Katherine Henderson “Katie” Smithson, 67, of Fort Smith died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004. She was a 1958 graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College of Lynchburg, Va., where she received her bachelor’s degree in English. She received her master’s degree in special education at University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, a lifelong Episcopalian and member of St. John’s Episcopal Church where she served on the Altar Guild, was a member of Junior League of Fort Smith and served on the board of Habitat for Humanity where she volunteered. She was a special education teacher at Northside High School for 20 years.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Episcopal Church with entombment at St. John’s Columbarium under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by two daughters, Polly Smithson and Betsy Robinson, both of Fort Smith; two sons, Lt. Col. Gray Smithson of Atlanta and Lt. Col. Lee Smithson of Jackson, Miss.; two sisters, Dotty Peters of Fort Smith and Linnah Schoen of Minneapolis; and six grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends in the Parish Hall following the service.

Olene Hurst
JONESBORO — Olene Hurst, 76, of Jonesboro died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004. She was a homemaker, she worked for Frolic Footwear for 19 years, was a supervisor at Jonesboro Human Development for 20 years, and a member of Calvary United Pentecostal Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Calvary United Pentecostal Church with burial at Jonesboro Memorial Park under the direction of Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
She is survived by her husband, Clarence; two daughters, Nettie Gibson of Jonesboro and Pamela Smoak of Tanzania, Africa; two sons, Lonnie Hurst of Fort Smith and Clarence L. Hurst of Jonesboro; two sisters, Willene Oden of Jonesboro and Nellie James of Tempe, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Lawrence Terrell
KINTA — Lawrence “Pookin” Terrell, 81, of Kinta died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, in his home. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Fish Creek Free Will Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Kinta First Baptist Church with burial at Sans Bois cemetery in Kinta under the direction of King & Shearwood Funeral Home of Stigler.
He is survived by a son, George Terrell of Stigler; two sisters, Hester Stiles and Louisa Gonzales, both of San Bois near Kinta.
Pallbearers will be Joey Stiles, Johnny and Mike Terrell and Stanley Wind.
Iona Ford
STIGLER — Iona A. Ford, 99, of Stigler died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, in Eufaula, Okla. She was a member of Stigler Main Street Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at King & Shearwood Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Stigler with burial at Antioch cemetery in Stigler.
She is survived by a daughter, Virginia Mayer of Oklahoma City; five sons, Euel Ford of Oklahoma City, Kenneth Ford of Stigler, Alfred Ford of Claremore, Okla., Guy Ford of Tulsa, and Nelson Ford of Enterprise; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
The body may be viewed 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.
Christopher Petit
DIBBLE, Okla. — Christopher Roy Petit, 32, of Dibble, Okla., died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004. He was born May 29, 1972. He was a heat and air technician for Comfort Air in Oklahoma City.
Services were held Monday at Word of Life Pentecostal Holiness in Dibble with burial at Dibble cemetery under the direction of Eisenhour Funeral Home of Blanchard, Okla.
He is survived by his wife, Marcella; his four children, Rusty, Brandon, Dalton and Mary, all of the home; his mother, Betty Mitchell of Van Buren; two sisters, Roberta Anderson of McAlester, Okla., and Katherine Joyce of Maysville; two brothers, Joe Petit Jr. of Little, Okla., and Davis Petit of Van Buren; stepsisters and stepbrothers, Sammy, Jim, Donnie, Arthur, Redhona, Rhonda and Debbie Mitchell and Rosa Campbell.
Lida Spiers
SPIRO — Lida Spiers, 87, of Spiro died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, in Spiro. She was a member of Spiro First Assembly of God and was the widow of Ora Spiers.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mallory Funeral Home Chapel in Spiro. The body will cremated.
She is survived by a son, Frank Spiers of Charleston; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Patricia Kirk
ALMA — Patricia A. Kirk, 61, of Alma died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, in Alma. She was a retired home health aide.
The body was cremated under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
Family-held graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Pine Crest cemetery in Mena.
She is survived by two daughters, Marie Rushing and Robyn Gillean, both of Alma; two sons, Patrick Gillean of Mena and Woody Gillean of Phoenix; a sister, Imogene Gimlin of Bakersfield, Calif.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends at the home of Patrick Gillean following the service.
Juanita Hunter
Juanita V. Hunter, 73, of Van Buren died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a homemaker and a Pentecostal.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Morrison cemetery in Rudy under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by two daughters, Katherine Hedrick of Fort Smith and Mary Jones of Van Buren; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Charles, Charlie and J.P. Jones, Jason Hunter, Justin Sangster and Doug Cook.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Ennis Atkinson
OZARK — Ennis J. Atkinson, 89, of Ozark died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, in Charleston. He was born Sept. 19, 1914, in Alpine, Texas. He was a retired rancher and member of the Vesta Methodist Church.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday at South Park cemetery under the direction of Ballard Funeral Home of Roswell. N.M. Local arrangements are under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
He is survived by his wife, Lorita; a daughter, Margaret Marsh of San Francisco; two sons, Jerry Atkinson of Hartford and Daniel Atkinson of Roswell, N.M.; a sister, Oleta Rhodes of Roswell, N.M.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Ouday Keophannga
Ouday Keophannga, 43, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, in Fort Smith. She worked at Tyson and belonged to the Lao Catholic Community.

Betty Nicholls
GREENWOOD — Betty Louise Nicholls, 82, of Greenwood died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Rosary will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Putman Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith.
Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial at Forest Park cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by a daughter, Leslie Shaw of Alexander; three sons, Rick Nicholls of Morrilton, Mark Nicholls of Frisco, Texas, and Steve Nicholls of Huntington; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends at the funeral home after the rosary.

Cecil Rea
Cecil Rea, 68, of Dyer died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, in a local hospital. He was a resident of Crawford County for the past 15 years and was formerly of Helena and Carson, Calif. area.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. today at Dyer City cemetery under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma.
He is survived by a sister, Virginia Martin of Bell Valley, Ohio; sister-in-law, Joyce Rea of Dyer; several nieces and nephews, including Terry Rea of Dyer and Anna Marie Ponce of Alma; several great-nieces and nephews.
Kevin Newton
Kevin Newton, 46, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, in Fort Smith. He was a former salesman for Newton’s Jewelers of Fort Smith and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Bill Newton.
Private committal will take place later this week with burial at Oak cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his son, Richard Kevin Newton Jr. of Fort Smith; his mother, Zoe Newton of Fort Smith; and two brothers, Kelly and Kyle “Duffy” Newton, both of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Bob Corrotto, John Mayes III, Augie Khilling, Bennie Spears, Darrel Standridge and John Miller.

Nettie Florence Miller
Nettie Florence Miller, 95, of Fort Smith passed away on Friday, Jan. 23, 2004. She was a member of First Christian Church and a homemaker. The word homemaker described Nettie perfectly. She loved to cook and sew. At one time she served as kitchen chairman for First Christian Church.
Funeral services will be today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. with burial at Forest Park cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
She is survived by daughters, Virginia Patterson of Tulsa, Jeanette Loris and her husband, Pete of Fayetteville, Jessie Suhor of Tallahassee, Fla., Dr. Jean Medlock and her husband, Larry, of Alma, Judy Loux and her husband, Larry, of Fort Smith and sons Harry and his wife, Sue, of Muldrow and Richard of Republic, Wash.; 27 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; one son, two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank her special caregivers, Margie Whitfield, Tressie Cook and Dianna Brown for all their care, support and love.

Rosie Lou Seratt
Rosie Lou Seratt, 95, of Chester died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, in a local nursing home. She was born Sept. 9, 1908, in Chester. She was a member of Chester Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was the widow of William C. Seratt.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 at Chester Free Will Baptist Church with burial at Freedom cemetery in Chester under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma.
She is survived by two daughters, Beulah Watkins and Stella Easter, both of Mountainburg; four sons, Kenneth, William and Jim Seratt, all of Mountainburg, and Raymond Seratt of Chester; 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, 917 U.S. 64 East in Alma.
