Pat Gregory
Pat Gregory, age 80, died at his Heavener home Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001. He suffered from the devastating aftermath of the radiation treatments for prostate cancer. He said the disease was preferable to the cure.
As a young man, Pat left Pocola and joined the CCC’s at Stapp, Okla., where he learned masonry and met and eventually wed the local beauty, Oynotis Pledger. They raised their five sons in the house that he built on the hill above the high school in Heavener. Over the years he served as president of the Arkansas Bricklayer’s Union, past president of the Heavener Eagles Aerie, and was a 32nd degree Mason. He served in the Navy with the Pacific fleet during World War II.
Pat will be remembered by generations of families over this region who wanted a new home built or an old one remodeled, or a new building for a new or growing business, or any and all general contracting projects. His conviction to provide a professional service made his reputation in the construction arena. He will be fondly remembered by any friend or stranger who shared a fishing hole with him. He loved to fish and was as no nonsense about that as he was about his construction business. He was always in the hunt for the next big catfish. Pat was an unsung champion of the underdog, many times during his lifetime he, through his generosity, made it easier for some to better help themselves.
He is survived by four sons, Tony, Dana, John and Jim, all of Heavener; two grandchildren, Guy of Tulsa and M. Jay of Heavener; two sisters, Elsie Freeman of Payson, Ariz., and Esta Alice Pipkins of Pocola; two nephews who regard him as their second father, Jerry of Pocola and Joe of Heavener; one uncle, Edgar Gregory of Spiro; plus many nieces and nephews.
