Elwanda Terry
HEAVENER — Elwanda Terry, 77, of Heavener died Thursday, March 11, 2004, in Fort Smith. She was a member of the Heavener First United Methodist Church, a retired secretary for the LeFlore County District Courts and the widow of Bob Terry.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with burial at Memorial Park in Heavener under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda Tautfest of Placerville, Calif., and Susan Terry of Heavener; two sons, Buster Terry of Dewey, Ariz., and Bucky Terry of Heavener; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Dewey Walker
HATTON — Dewey Walker, 88, of Hatton died Thursday, March 11, 2004, in Mena. He was born Feb. 27, 1916, in Carbon Hill, Ala. He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from Hatton Lumber Co., where he was a forklift driver.
Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Grove cemetery under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
He is survived by his wife, Florence; three sons, Charles Odom of Conroe, Texas, and David and Larry Walker, both of Mena; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Eva Stevens
Eva Jo Stevens, 59, of Fort Smith died Friday, March 12, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a homemaker.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Edwards Van-Alma Chapel in Van Buren. The body will be cremated.
She is survived by three daughters, Cheri Teague of Jenny Lind and Phyllis Riddle and Terri Taylor, both of Fort Smith; three sons, Perry, Monte and Robin McCollum, all of Fort Smith; a sister, Bonnie Capek of Alma; a brother, Buddy Stevens of Kibler; and 17 grandchildren.
J.C. Lee
PARIS — J.C. Lee, 83, of Paris died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, in his home. He was a member of Midway Assembly of God in Midway and an Army veteran of World War II, where he served in northern France and earned the Bronze Star and a Good Conduct medal.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Midway Assembly of God with burial at Horn cemetery in Midway under the direction of Murry Funeral Home of Paris.
He is survived by his wife Erma Faye; two daughters, Sharon Fly of Stilwell, Okla., and Patty Hamilton of Fort Smith; a son, Bill Lee of Fresno, Calif.; a sister, Rosie Bradley of Las Vegas; five brothers, Fay of Paris, Russell of Oklahoma City, Junior of Las Vegas, James and Kenneth of Vertuna, Calif.; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be James Jones, Kenny, Kevin and Nick Hughes, Mitchell Jones and Art and Jimmy Carter.
The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Beverly Palmer Davis
Beverly Palmer Davis, 67, left this earth on Monday, March 29, 2004. She was born in New York City and moved with her parents to Fort Smith in 1945. She was predeceased in death by her parents, Capola Bourland Palmer and Archer Kay (Skeeter) Palmer.
Beverly attended Fort Smith public schools, Barstow Preparatory School in Kansas City, Mo., and Westark Junior College. She served on the board of Sparks Guild, Fort Smith Symphony, administrative board First United Methodist Church, and was part of the Stephen’s Ministry, master gardener club, and sang in the Chancel Choir of First United Methodist Church.
She leaves behind husband Carl Davis; daughter Debra Kay New of Bakersfield, Calif., Michelle Lynn Mitchell of Fayetteville; sons, Robert Bruce Mitchell of Denver, Michael Drew Mitchell of Fort Smith, Mark Lewis Mitchell of San Antonio and Richard Grant Mitchell of Boulder, Colo. She also left grandchildren Lt. Jason Mitchell USMC, Stephanie Mitchell, Kaitlin and Meghan Mitchell, Sean and Leigh Mitchell, Brandon New, Morgan Mitchell, Alex and Cade Burnham, and stepdaughter, Emily Davis, and stepgranddaughter, Autumn West.
Memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church today at 11 a.m. There will be a private family burial at Forest Park cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Bruce Mitchell, Mike Mitchell, Mark Mitchell, Rick Mitchell and Jason Mitchell.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church Music Department.
Dessie Jane Coley
Dessie Jane Coley went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at the age of 86. She was born May 16, 1917, in Witcherville. She was a member of Palestine Baptist Church and was retired from Southern Steel and Wire.
She was the widow of Charlie Coley and was preceded in death by her mother, Pearl Clark; and two sons, Gene and Sidney Coley.
She is survived by two daughters, Mildred Croft of Greenwood and Kay Waggoner and son-in-law, Daniel Waggoner of Charleston; daughter-in-law, Shirley Coley Fairfield of Alma; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Fullen, Lisa Starr, Jennifer Jennen, Gary and Jeff Coley, Steve and Mike Fairfield, and Dee Ann Harris; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Coop Prairie cemetery in Mansfield.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Coley, Gary Coley, Steve Fairfield, Mike Fairfield, Daniel Waggoner, Fred Abshere, Tommy Starr, Alan Bowles and Steve Crouch.
Halton L. Hedges
Halton L. Hedges, 74, a 55-year resident of the Phoenix Valley, passed away peacefully at his home in Peoria, Ariz., Feb. 6, 2004.
Hal is survived by Nadine, his wife of 53 years; his children, John D. (Janet) Hedges, Ted K. (Donna) Hedges, Gary L. Hedges, Jane (Ron) Carmichael, Susie (Shelton) Brown; 19 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Before Hal came to Arizona, he was a golden glove boxer in the Army. As a 20-year-old, Hal hitchhiked to Phoenix from Greenwood with only $5, a bag of bread and bologna. When he arrived in Phoenix, he held a variety of jobs, including working for Ameron International Corp. for 33 years and farming cotton in the Tolleson area. After retiring from Ameron, he began Atlas Forklift Inc. in his back yard, which later moved to south Phoenix and became one of the largest flatbed truck carriers in the state.
Through the years, he was an active member of the Arizona Motor Transport Association. Many people’s lives have been touched by his generosity and love.
Funeral services were held Feb. 10, 2004, at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints in Peoria with graveside at Holy Cross cemetery, Avondale, Ariz., under the direction of Heritage Funeral Chapel, 6830 W. Thunderbird Road, Peoria.

Marcella Baker Guffey
Marcella Baker Guffey, 74, of 204 Allsbrook Place, Moore, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, in her home.
Born in Somerset, Ky., on Sept. 29, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Charles Elmer and Grace Hargis Baker. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Guffey was a member of Southside Baptist Church, where she was active in the Church Welcome Center until her illness. She and her husband were the first couple in the church to receive the Sling Shot Award.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years, William J. Guffey of the home; two daughters, Vickie G. Myers and husband, Thomas R. Myers of Spartanburg, S.C., Sandra G. Harlow and husband, Joseph Thomas Harlow of Moore; two grandsons, Thomas William Myers of Spartanburg and David C. Miller and wife, Debra of Gaffney, S.C.; three granddaughters, Carrie Leigh Harlow, Michelle Elizabeth Myers and Kristi Nicole Harlow; and one great-grandson, Daniel Golden.
A sister, Irene B. Phelps, and brothers, Ed Baker, Gene Baker, Hoy Baker, Curtis Baker, Raymond Baker and Durard Baker, predeceased her.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Southside Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Everett Foster.
The family will receive friends in the church parlor at 10 a.m. Saturday prior to the service.
Burial will follow at Heritage Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at the home.

Ada Roose, 89, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, in Fort Smith. She was retired from Riverside Furniture, a member of West-Ark Church of Christ and the widow of Claude Hart and Harlan Roose.
Graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Roselawn cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by one son, Jerry Hart of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Wayne, Trey, Toby and Troy Pogue, Wayne Means and Rick Tinder.
Velma Mayfield
DES MOINES, Iowa — Velma G. Mayfield, 71, of Des Moines, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, in her home. She was born July 5, 1932, in Paris. She worked at Mid Central Plastics for 25 years.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at McLaren’s Funeral Chapel in Des Moines, Iowa, with burial at Resthaven cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Charley; a daughter, Ann Kellogg of Des Moines; four sons, Allen, Louis, Michael and Charlie Jr., all of Des Moines; a sister, Estelle Green; two brothers, Bill Green and Murray Green of Paris; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

HATTON — Margie M. Bell Knight, 83, of Hatton died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, in Mena. She was born March 10, 1921. She was a homemaker, a member of Wickes Church of the Nazarene and the widow of John Bell and Ronald Knight.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Wickes Church of the Nazarene with burial at Witherspoon cemetery in Vandervoort under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
She is survived by a son, Tommy Bell; three sisters, Eva Wooten of Cove, Jewel Flores of Random Lake, Wis., and Linda Miller of Henderson, Calif.; two brothers, Wiley and Chuck Bledsoe, both of Grafton, Wis.; and one grandchild.
Lorraine McConahey
OZARK — Lorraine McConahey, 82, of Ozark died Monday, March 29, 2004, in Ozark. She was born Jan. 5, 1922, in the Greenwood community. She was a film splicer for Universal Studios and the widow of William McConahey.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark.
She is survived by a son, Michael McConahey of Van Nuys, Calif.; two sisters, Ernestine Morton of Ozark and Daisy Detherage of Altus; and three grandchildren.
Goldie Ritter
Goldie Ritter, 81, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a homemaker and attended the First Assembly of God in Van Buren.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Gill cemetery in Van Buren under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by two sons, Clyde James of Greenwood and Ronnie James of Chester; a brother, Junior Reynolds of Van Buren; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
Shirley Wallace
Shirley Jean Patrick Wallace, 62, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, in her home. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School, a member of Bethlehem Freewill Baptist Church and a retired cook for Cook Elementary School.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
She is survived by her husband, Claude; two daughters, Kendra Van Horn of Fort Smith and Lorita Ray of Van Buren; her mother, Lela Patrick of Farmington; two sisters, Betty Ball of Farmington and Patricia Kelley of Prairie Grove; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Wayman, Greg and Mark White, John Kelley, Mark Wallace and Mark MCcarver.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
