Robert L. Jones Jr. Robert L. Jones Jr., 81, of Fort Smith passed away Thursday, April 1, 2004, in Fort Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, and survived by his wife, Caroline; two sons, Robert L. Jones III and his fiancee, Cheryl Cannon and Kenny B. Jones and his wife, Rhonda of Fort Smith; two stepsons, Jim Phillips and his wife, Cynthia of Denver and Bob Phillips and his wife, Robin of Chickasha, Okla.; one brother, Dan Jones and his wife, Martha of Magazine; three grandchildren, Michelle Kooi of Loveland, Colo., David Jones of Glenwood Springs, Colo., and Olivia Jones of Fort Smith; three stepgrandchildren, Connor and Ryan Phillips of Denver and Robbie Crosier of Chickasha, Okla.; and two great-grandchildren, Wyatt Kooi and Sage Kooi. Robert graduated from Magazine High School in Magazine in 1938, graduated from Hendrix College in Conway with a bachelor of arts degree in 1942, was on the track team and debate team at Hendrix and won the state debate championship in 1942, graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Law in Fayetteville in 1948 with L.L.B. degree with honors, and was editor of the Arkansas Law Review 1947-48. He served in the Army from 1943 until 1946, including 27 months in the European Theater of Operations in World War II and was commissioned second lieutenant, Infantry in Europe; recalled to active service during the Korean War and served 21 months as a legal officer (First Lieutenant JAGC, USAR) from 1950-52. He was continuously engaged in the private practice of law in Fort Smith since 1948 with the exception of serving as a special assistant, U.S. attorney in 1950. He was a partner in the firm of Shaw, Jones & Shaw, Fort Smith from 1952-70 and since 1970 has been senior partner in the law firm of Jones, Jackson & Moll PLC (formerly Jones, Gilbreath & Jones). Robert was a member of the National Conference of Bar Presidents, Fellow, American College of Trial Lawyers. He was past president of the Sebastian County Bar Association, past Arkansas Bar Foundation and past president of Arkansas Bar Association. He served as a member of the Arkansas Supreme Court Committee on Jury Instructions from its creation in 1962-99, served as special associate justice, Arkansas Supreme Court, in 1970, awarded the Arkansas Bar Association’s Outstanding Lawyer of the Year Award in 1978, the Arkansas Association of Defense Counsel, Outstanding Defense Attorney Award in 1992. He was listed in the publication “Best Lawyers in America” in civil trial practice in every issue of the publication since its inception; 1999 American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the 8th Judicial Circuit. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Fort Smith, taught Builders Sunday school class for more than 55 years, served on the administrative board of First United Methodist Church for many years and as chairman from 1968-70. Robert was currently a life member of the advisory board of the Salvation Army in Fort Smith, having been a member for approximately 30 years and served as chairman in 1973; has been active in scouting as Cubmaster, Assistant Scout Master, Institutional Representative and Merit Badge Counselor, and as a member of the board of Westark Area Council of Boy Scouts of America; past president of the Girl’s Shelter; president of Alumni Association of Hendrix College 1968-69; president of Hardscrabble Country Club in Fort Smith 1980-81; in 1997 he was awarded the Salvation Army’s “Others” award in recognition of community service. Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 5, 2004, at First United Methodist Church in Fort Smith with interment at Roselawn cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Todd Kooi, David Jones, Danny Jones, Robert Jones, Arvid Bean, Ryan Bean, Randy Jackson and Mark Moll. Honorary pallbearers will be the Builders Sunday school class, Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, Sebastian County Bar Association and Arkansas Bar Association, Sebastian County Bar Association and Arkansas Bar Association. Clarence Grimes GREENWOOD — Clarence Grimes, 82, of Greenwood died Friday, April 2, 2004, in Greenwood. He was a retired employee of the Trailway Bus Co., an Army veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion and a Baptist. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Smith cemetery in Bradford under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith. He is survived by his wife, Mattie; two sons, Gary Grimes Sr. of Greenwood and Clarence Grimes Jr. of Manchester, Mo.; one grandchild and four great-grandchildren. Florine McKinney OZARK — Florine S. McKinney, 80, of Ozark died Friday, April 2, 2004, in Ozark. She was a homemaker and a turkey grower for Cargill. She was the widow of J.P. Watson, Paul Ribitzki and Vance McKinney. No service is planned. She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Mitchell of Ozark; two sons, George Ribitzki of Long Beach, Calif., and Paul Ribitzki of Tulsa; a stepson, Skeeter McKinney of Ozark; two sisters, Ida Reed of Roswell, N.M., and Lynn Bridges of Alba, Texas; two brothers, Baisel Spencer of Eugene, Ore., and Charles Spencer of Dallas; eight grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark. Mary Pile PETER PENDER — Mary Kathryn Pile, 87, of Peter Pender died Saturday, April 3, 2004, in Paris. She was born Sept. 26, 1916, in Charleston. She retired after teaching for 36 years at Branch and County line schools and was a member of Branch First Baptist Church. She was the widow of Cline C. Pile. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Branch First Baptist Church with burial at Garden of Memories cemetery in Charleston under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston. She is survived by two sons, Stephen Pile of Granville, Ohio, and Philip Pile of Patchoque, N.Y.; two sisters, Virginia Holt of Ozark and Frances Schilling of Jackson, Miss.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be James, Michael, Christopher, Taylor and Seldon Pile and Kevin Larsen. The body may be viewed beginning at noon today. The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Jessie White WALDRON — Jessie Thomas White, 86, of Waldron died Friday, April 2, 2004, in his home. He was retired from the Arkansas State Highway Department. He was the widower of Dorothy Lee White. Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Duncan cemetery in Waldron under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Waldron. He is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Jones and Joyce Parker, both of Waldron; a so, Jessie White of Rocky Point, N.C.; a sister, Amanda Pearson of Vienna, Mo.; four brothers, Marion White of Van Buren, George White of Mayfield, Ky.; J.C. White of Brea, Calif., and William White of Mena; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Georgia Branstetter POTEAU — Georgia Branstetter, 71, of Poteau died Saturday, April 3, 2004, in Poteau. She was born Feb. 24, 1933, in Tahlequah, Okla. She retired after teaching school for about 30 years and was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Poteau. She was the widow of Myrl Branstetter. Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Southside Baptist Church in Poteau with burial at Slatonville cemetery in Slatonville, Okla., under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau. She is survived by two daughters, Pam Albert of Poteau and Donna Hendricks of Cameron; two sons, Gary Branstetter of Poteau and Mark Branstetter of Cameron; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Judy Sudduth Judy Gay Sudduth, 55, of Fort Smith died Friday, April 2, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. Jase Daggs CLARKSVILLE — Jase Keaton Daggs, 7-month-old son of Jason and Monica Daggs of Clarksville, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, in his home. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Waldron Nazarene Church with burial at Duncan cemetery in Waldron under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Waldron. She is survived by five daughters, Wanda Brassington of Midwest City, Okla.; Pauline Williams of Lakeland, Fla., Dorene Heflin of Owasso, Okla., Arrietta Poling of Wilburton, Okla., and LeDeanne Carter of Kaw City, Okla.; a son, Edgar Brooks of Prescott, Ariz.; 22 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren. Helen Sherfield POCOLA — Helen Louise Sherfield, 57, of Pocola died Friday, April 3, 2004, in a local hospital. She was born Nov. 16, 1946. She was a former employee of Perrin Tractor. She is survived by her husband, Billy Joe McGhee; a daughter, Cheryl Alvey of Muldrow; two sons, Joe and Jonathan McGhee, both of Gans; and six grandchildren. Flora Jocelyn Smith Flora Jocelyn Smith, 93, of Van Buren died Saturday, April 3, 2004. She was born March 27, 1911, in Greenwood to the late Sylvester Scales and Ethel Stroud Scales. Flora was a member of the First Baptist Church in Van Buren, where she served as church secretary for 20 years. In her retirement, Flora’s love of reading and her community led to volunteering at the Van Buren Public Library, which later became a part-time position. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Smith; sons David and Carl Smith; brothers Levi “Bud” Scales and Fred Scales; and a sister, Bessie Scales Townley. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ocker Funeral Home Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gill cemetery in Van Buren. Casket bearers will be John, Michael, Patrick, Kevin and Kyle Smith, Chris Moquett, Mitchell Blythe.
