Ellis Duncan Price Ellis Duncan Price was born Sept. 23, 1917, in Abbott to William Burl Price and Nydia King Duncan Price. He was affectionately known as “Red” because of his beautiful wavy red hair. He spent most of his youth in Mansfield and Poteau. While in Poteau he was president of his senior class, a champion debater, a member of the drama club and choir, a track star, a boxer and a football star. Ellis liked to tell the story of meeting his wife, Sara Reiss during World War II. He was a Navy boatswains man, and was docked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Christmas Eve, 1943. He and some shipmates decided to go out on the town that night. They happened into a nightclub where he met a young, beautiful lady named Sara. When he asked the lady to dance, she told him she would only dance with him if he could get some fellows to dance with all her girlfriends who were with her. He went out on the street and rounded up some shipmates and brought them back in to the club. After introductions, they danced and he asked her to Midnight Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Sara, made him ask her mother and, after much persuasion, Ellis got his date. The next morning, Ellis shipped out. However, for the nine months he was at sea at war, he faithfully wrote love poems and letters to Sara, and she replied in kind. When he docked again in California, he traveled across the country, and married Sara that week. So, after one date and nine months of correspondence the two were married , and stayed married until her death in 1992. During World War II, Ellis was aboard the USS Kalk, DD 611, and aboard the USS Fanning. His ship was hit at Biak, and as people around him lay dying he somehow was uninjured except for a pierced eardrum. He helped with all the funerals “at sea” and even did some of the burial services, as he was a wonderful speaker and had great knowledge of the Bible. He was awarded medals for being involved in the European, African, Middle East Campaign, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign, and the American Campaign. He also received the Occupation Service Medal during the take over of Tokyo. After his service in World War II, he was called back up to the Korean War. He and Sara settled in Fort Smith where he worked for Stein Dry Goods and Wexler McCoy for many years. Ellis was a selfless man. He always gave with no expectation of receiving anything. He was full of compliments, love, understanding and has so many friends. He never had an enemy. On Ellis 80th birthday, his family had a surprise party for him with 200 people in attendance. They came from near and far to honor him. On his 81st birthday, he skydived with his son, Joel. On his 83rd birthday, he rode on a Harley with his son-in-law, Mike McHughes, and on his 85th birthday, he took a trip in a new Corvette with his other son-in-law, Garvin Myhand. He was active in Senior Olympics and took home many gold medals over several years. He also was inducted into the Poteau High School Hall of Fame as “All Around Athlete” on his 80th birthday. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Reiss Price, his mother and father, Nydia and William Price, and by his brother, Ronald Price and his wife, Ona Mae, and their daughter, Glenda. He is survived by his children, Michele Myhand, Denise McHughes and her husband, Michael, and his son, Joel W. Price, and Garvin Myhand, his son-in-law. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Debbie Mathis and her husband, Steve Mathis of McKinney, Texas, Laney Meyer and her husband, Caleb Meyer of Englewood, Colo., Tara Myhand of Fort Smith, Kim Green and her husband, Jason Green of Overland Park, Kan., and Blair Myhand and his wife, Karen of Fredricksburg, Va. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Ryan and Ethan Mathis, Reiss and Abigail Clemons, Will and Jack Green, and Joshua, Tyler and Caleb Myhand. He is also survived by his brother, Norman Price and his wife, Betty of Del Ray Beach, Fla., and all of their children. He is also survived by a multitude of friends who will miss his wonderful singing voice, his love for all of them, and his kind smile and words of encouragement. Ellis “Red” Price was a Dad among Dads, a Man among Men, a Friend among Friends, and a Person among Persons. Along his life’s journey, he never met a stranger or made an enemy. Not a single person could resist his cheerfulness, his wit, his charm, his kindness, his generosity, his spirit, his wisdom or his friendship. He was a gentle man and a gentleman. David Allen Jennings Sr. David Allen Jennings Sr., 67, of Fort Smith died Thursday, April 8, 2004, in North Little Rock. He was a truck driver for C. Bean Trucking Co. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. today at Putman Funeral Home Chapel. Cremation under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith. He is survived by four sons, Dave Jr., “Matt”, George and Marvin, all of Fort Smith; two sisters, Nancy Brown of Tucson, Ariz., and Shelia Sutton of Del Rio, Texas; a brother, Wendall Jennings of Lee Vining, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Trevor Jennings, Dillion Jennings, and Miranda Jennings. Patsy Virginia Suggs Patsy Virginia Suggs, 70, of Fort Smith died Friday, April 9, 2004, in Fort Smith. She was a Methodist, retired sales clerk for the Big Man’s Shop in Fort Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil Suggs. There was a private service for family. She is survived by three sons, Robert Suggs and his wife, Sara of Fort Smith, also Randall Suggs and his wife, Judy of Fort Smith, and Terry Bradshaw and his wife, Marilyn of Palo Pinto, Texas, one sister, Ruth Nicks of Houston; and six grandchildren, Danielle Suggs, Bobbi Suggs, Joe Suggs, Kaitlyn Burkhardt, all of Fort Smith, Wes Bradshaw and Lindsay Bradshaw, both of Palo Pinto, Texas. Herbert H. Heiss Herbert H. Heiss, 65, of Eureka Springs, formerly of Van Buren, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, in his residence. He was a retired substation maintenance man, Air National Guard veteran and also board chairman of the Heiss Family Association. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sue Smith Heiss, by a brother and sister, Bill and Mary Ann Heiss, and also by his parents, Fred and Kathryn Heiss. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren. He is survived by a daughter, Lisa Knight of Van Buren; sisters and brothers, Fred Heiss of Hollister, Mo., Joe Heiss of Greenwood, Charles Heiss of Pioneertown, Calif., Kay Heiss of Fayetteville, Jim Heiss of Eugene, Ore., Dave Heiss of Pioneertown, Calif., Margie Fletcher of Wylie, Texas, Tom Heiss of Winthrop, Maine, Patti Smith of Greenwood, Harry Heiss of Arlington, Va., and Tony Heiss of Fort Smith; and two grandchildren, Jordan and Jessica Knight of Van Buren. Pallbearers will be his brothers and sisters. Gary Naylor HOWE — Gary Don Naylor, 46, of Howe died Sunday, April 11, 2004, in his home. He was a lab tech for OK Farms Hatchery in Heavener and was of the Baptist faith. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Howe cemetery under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener. He is survived by his mother, Neva Allison of Howe; and a brother, David Naylor of Howe. Jewel Ford MENA — Jewel Evalee Ford, 91, of Mena died Saturday, April 10, 2004, in Mena. She was born Sept. 29, 1912, in Little Fir. She was a nurse’s aide for Leisure Lodge Nursing Home, a seamstress at Renova Shirt Factory, and a member of Dallas Avenue Baptist Church. She was the widow of Roy Gilbert and Bob Ford. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Concord cemetery in Ink under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena. She is survived by a son, Roy Gilbert of Mena; and several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of donor’s choice. Jimmy Butler CLARKSVILLE — Jimmy Mack Butler, 54, of Clarksville died Saturday, April 10, 2004, in his home. He was born July 24, 1949, in Beggs, Okla. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a master plumber and electrician. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Hardwicke Funeral Home Chapel in Clarksville with burial at Coal Hill cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Donna; two daughters, Melissa Green and Melanie Butler, both of Clarksville; three sons, Cody, Jimmy and Andrew Butler, all of Clarksville; his stepfather, James Bell of Coal Hill; three brothers, Bruce Butler of Clarksville, James Bell of Coal Hill and Carl Bell of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and nine grandchildren. Flora Martin SANDY, Utah — Flora Frances Wood Martin, 73, of Sandy died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, in Salt Lake City. She was born April 30, 1930, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker, a graduate of Fort Smith Northside High School Class of 1949 and an active member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Funeral was held March 29, 2004, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with burial at Lake Hills cemetery in Sandy, Utah under the direction of Lake Hills Memorial Mortuary and cemetery in Sandy, Utah. She is survived by her husband, Dale; a daughter, Susan of Orem, Utah; a son, Dale of Salt Lake City; three sisters, Geri and Emma, both of Henefer, Utah, and Margaret of Salt Lake City; a brother, Dana Wood; and one grandchild. Frances Smith MOUNT HOPE, Kan. — Frances Evelyn Astle Smith, 96, of Mount Hope, formerly of Clarksville, died Saturday, March 27, 2004, in Mount Hope. She was born Aug. 13, 1907, in Haven, Kan. She attended Haven schools and was a 1927 graduate of Haven High School. She owned restaurants in Haven and Mount Hope and was active in the Federated Church in Mount Hope, singing with quartets and the choir. She served as chancel chairman, attended First Methodist Church in Clarksville and was a member of the EHU. She was the widow of Carl McCormick, Homer Hudson, and Forrest Smith. Funeral was held March 31, 2004, at the Federated Church with burial at Mount Hope cemetery under the direction of Wulf-Ast Mortuary of Mount Hope, Kan. She is survived by a daughter, Gladys Miles of Mount Hope, Kan.; a son, Ronald McCormick of Fort Smith; two stepdaughters, Donna Grass of Broomfield, Colo. and Winifred Priddle of Haven, Kan.; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Barbara Land Barbara Ann Land, 64, of Fort Smith died Sunday, April 11, 2004, in her home. She was co-owner of The Thrift Shop Inc., and was a member of Marvin Altman Fitness Center. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Putman Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Forest Park cemetery in Fort Smith. She is survived by her husband, Bob; two daughters, Beverly Land of Hackett and Linda Rodebush of Fort Smith; two sons, Robert Land of Benton and Brian Land of Fort Smith; a sister, Lilly Saab of Sacramento, Calif.; and nine grandchildren. Madgeline Hindman MURPHY, Texas — Madgeline Hindman, 86, of Murphy, Texas, formerly of Fort Smith, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, in Richardson, Texas. She was a homemaker, a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Fort Smith and the widow of Wesley Hindman. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Putman Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith. Benny Farrell Pritchard Benny Farrell Pritchard, 61, of Kibler died Sunday, April 18, 2004, in Oklahoma City. He was a retired office manager for Glascoat Southwest and attended First Church of God in Fort Smith. He also coached baseball at the Van Buren Boys and Girls Club. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 2004, at Edwards Van-Alma Chapel with burial at Hight cemetery in Franklin County under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren. He is survived by his wife, Caron of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, James and JoAnna Pritchard of Van Buren; his father, James “Tessie” Pritchard of Van Buren; a sister, Donna Herring of Fort Smith; and a grandson, Jake Pritchard of Van Buren. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews, several great-nieces and nephews and numerous cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Pallbearers will be Phillip and Jesse Jackson, Farrell and Donald Ray Boyd, James Herring and Fred Allen. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Denniston, Alan Herring, Ray Harris Jackson, Kenneth McFerran, Ted Allen, Jack Pritchard and Gary Scott. The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. William “Buddy” W. Law William “Buddy” W. Law, 54, of Greenwood died Monday, April 19, 2004, in Little Rock. He was born Nov. 19, 1949, in Paris to Elton Law and Norma Whitman Law. He was a member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church, Greenwood and a retired route salesman for Coca-Coca Bottling Co. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at Liberty Missionary Baptist Church in Greenwood with burial at Caulksville City cemetery in Caulksville under the direction of Smith Mortuary Inc. of Charleston. He is survived by his wife, Gayla Law of the home; two daughters, Holly King of Greenwood and Whitney Law of Greenwood; two sisters, Sue Chastain of Fort Smith and Dee Reames of Fort Smith. Stafford, Doug Barnard, Mike Flynn and men of the Liberty Missionary Baptist Church. Dr. Prentiss E. Ware Dr. Prentiss E. Ware, 88, of Fort Smith, passed away Sunday, April 18, 2004, in Fort Smith. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, having served as chairman of the administrative board and in many other areas. He was an oral surgeon and had practiced in Fort Smith 46 years prior to retirement in 1987. He was a member of the Fort Smith Dental Association, Arkansas Dental Association, American Dental Association, Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and other professional organizations. He had served as president of the Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and president of the University of Missouri School of Dentistry Alumni Association and was selected “Alumnus of the Year” in 1981. He served five years on the Arkansas State Board of Dental Examiners. He served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater and was awarded four combat service stars. He was discharged from active duty in 1946 with the rank of major. He was a member of the Noon Exchange Club, the Fort Smith Chamber of Commerce and the Men’s Bible Study at First United Methodist Church. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. today, April 21, 2004, at First United Methodist Church with a private family burial at Roselawn cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith. He is survived by his wife, Gladys; two daughters, Carolyn and husband Wes Phillips of Tulsa, and Janelle Ware of Tulsa; two sons, Gaylon Ware and wife Maureen of Little Rock, and Byron Ware of Fort Smith; three grandchildren, Ashley and husband Chandler Scott of Fort Worth, Texas, Kevin Ware at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Katie Ware at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La.; three great-grandchildren, Braden and twins, Devan and Ethan Scott of Fort Worth; a sister, Esther Coker of Fort Smith; and a sister-in-law, Jane Ware of Greenwood.
