John Wood
MENA — John William “J.W.” Wood, 88, of Mena, formerly of Heavener, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in a local nursing home. He was born Jan. 12, 1916. He served in the Army and was the widower of Linda Wood.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Glendale cemetery in Wister under the direction of Grace Manor Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by a daughter, Carol Nardo of Santa Barbara, Calif.; two sons, Jerry Wood of Wolf Creek, Ore., and Larry Wood of Myrtle Creek, Ore.; a sister, Christine Alexander of Flat Rock, Mich.; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Homer Harris
DOVER — Homer Harris, 58, of Dover died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in Russellville. He was born Oct. 26, 1945, on Buck Mountain. He was a carpenter.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Shinn Funeral Service Chapel in Russellville with burial at Phoenix cemetery on Buck Mountain near Dover.
He is survived by his wife, Debra; two daughters, Julie Cervantes of Fort Smith and April Hernandez of Dover; two sons, Eddie Harris of Russellville and Jeffrey Harris of Fort Smith; his mother, Ethel McDonald of Dover; a sister, Abbie Harris of Atkins; a brother, Donald Harris of Dover; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Steve Payton, Robert Casey, Robert and Jason Allen, Mike and Tracy Cossey.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, P.O. Box 1653, Topeka, KS 66601-1653.

George Mills
George Jack Mills, 83, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in Fort Smith. He was a printer for Westark Printing in Fort Smith and published three books on printing.
Cremation service will be held at a later date under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; a son, Larry Mills of Malibu, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Robert Powell
BOONEVILLE — Robert Clay Powell, 32, of Booneville died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in Booneville. He was a mechanic.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Roberts Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Booneville with burial at Helton cemetery near Booneville.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; a daughter, Brittney Powell of Oklahoma; a son, David Powell of Oklahoma; his mother and stepfather, Melinda and Wayne Crawley of Booneville; his father, David Powell of Booneville; two sisters, Lori Goodman of Pocola and Lea Mott of Booneville; six brothers, Matthew and Shawn Yeakley, Lance Crawley, all of Booneville, Jason and John Powell, both of Greewood, and Ronnie Yeakley of North Carolina; paternal grandmother, Helen Powell of Booneville; and maternal grandmother, Emma Shores of Mena.
Pallbearers will be DeWayne, Tim and Wayne Shepard, J.D. Jones, Matthew Powell and Lance Crawley.
The family will visit with friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Pat R. Beneux
Pat R. Beneux, age 70, of Van Buren passed away Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, in Fort Smith. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Van Buren and a volunteer with the Crawford Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxiliary. She is preceded in death by her husband, Justin Beneux. She was born July 10, 1934, in Muskogee, Okla., to Clarence and Minnie Corliss.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fentress Mortuary Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by her two sons, Brent and Barry Beneux, both of Van Buren; and one brother, Mike Corliss of Rockwall, Texas. She is also survived by two special friends, Diane Runion and Tressa McBride.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 8006, Fort Smith, AR 72902.

Mrs. Peggy June Moore Knight
Mrs. Peggy June Moore Knight, 75, of Fort Smith, formerly of Van Buren, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in a local hospital.
She was a retired loan officer with Wells-Fargo Bank in North Long Beach, Calif., and a member of AARP and the Order of the Eastern Star, Fort Smith Chapter 237.
Her husband, Frank O. Knight Sr., preceded her in death.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by a daughter, Debbie McKenzie of Twenty-Nine Palms, Calif.; three sons, Frank Knight Jr. of Fort Smith, Ronald Knight of Van Buren and Larry Knight Sr. of Alma; a brother, Don Moore of Fort Smith; an aunt, Patricia Bell of Fort Smith; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jim Hadley, Lance Knight, Larry D. Knight, Josh Knight and Travis Smith.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home, 4100 Alma Highway, Van Buren.

Herman Paul “Woody” Woods
Herman Paul “Woody” Woods, 88, of Fort Smith went to be with his Lord on Friday, Sept. 17, 2004. Woody was born Jan. 15, 1916, in Lutcher, La. He was a retired master sergeant for the Air Force, a retiree of 7UP and Dr Pepper Bottling Co. and St. Edward Mercy Medical Center. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. As a member of the Arkansas Air National Guard 188th Fighter Wing, he was activated during desegregation in Little Rock and again during the Cuban missile crisis. His military service spanned 33 years, beginning in 1943 through retirement in 1976.
Woody was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for nearly 50 years, a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8845 and a recent volunteer at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center.
There will be a rosary at 7 p.m. Monday at Fentress Mortuary Chapel in Fort Smith.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Veronica “Ronnie” Woods; four sons, Rodney Woods of Fort Smith, David Woods of Cleveland, Tenn., Robert McAllister of Springdale and John McAllister of Gravette; one daughter, LaDonna Charlet of Van Buren; 10 grand-children and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Steve McAllister, Chris Weiche, Mike and Kyle McAllister and Jeremy and Cory Woods. Honorary pallbearers and Honor Guard will be members of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Knights of Columbus, 10203 Columbus Acres Road, Fort Smith, AR 72916.

David H. Cole
David H. Cole, 51, of Alma died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in a local hospital. He was the owner and operator of David Cole Bail Bonds in Van Buren and was a member of The American Miniature Horse Registry.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Roselawn cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
He is survived by his wife, Pauletta of the home; three daughters, Kerry Ryan of The Woodlands, Texas, and Amanda Rogers and Kristy Dunn, both of Van Buren; one son, Kevin Cole of Naperville, Ill.; two brothers, Bill Cole of Murrieta, Calif., and Bob Cole of Paris; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, 4100 Alma Highway, Van Buren.

Janet Rountree
HARTFORD — Janet Rountree, 67, of Hartford died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, in a local hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of Hartford First Baptist Church and Hartford Extension Homemakers Club.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Hartford First Baptist Church with burial at Hartford Memorial Park under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Hartford.
She is survived by two daughters, Billie Bell of Hartford and Terri Ramirez of Colton, Calif.; a son, Donald Rountree of Earp, Calif.; seven grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Richard and Ryan Wingate, Gary Radley, Tony Hoopengarner, Marty Nelson and Clyde Mendenhall.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Hartford Volunteer Fire Department.
The body may be viewed from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Annie Riley
Annie “Shane” Riley, 63, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, in her home. She was born Sept. 30, 1940, in Cedar, Okla. She attended Lincoln High School in Fort Smith and was a member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church and an employee of Interfaith and Hobson preschools.
Funeral will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at Unity Missionary Baptist Church with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Rowell-Parish Mortuary of Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, L.D.; four daughters, Beverly Wilborn, Donna Christian and Lisa Wise, all of Fort Smith, and Carla Vincent of Misawa, Japan; three sons, Darrell Eure of Norfolk, Va., Clifton Culpepper of Chicago and Lionel Riley of Rogers; a sister, Palis Rutledge of Fort Smith; two brothers, Chester Montgomery and Jack Fuhr, both of Topeka, Kan.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Floyd Williamson, Kevin Moore, Chester Lucas, Mike Grimes, Nick Lasker and Ike Jackson.
The body may be viewed from 1 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family will visit with friends at 3930 Bradley Drive, Fort Smith.

Margie Norvell
Margie Norvell, 76, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in a local hospital. She was born Aug. 19, 1928, in Van Buren. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith United Methodist Church and Prime Timers.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Faith United Methodist Church in Fort Smith with burial at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Paul; a daughter, Phyllis Kerby of Van Buren; a son, David Norvell of Rye Hill; two sisters, Wilma Gray of Scranton and Betty Hammontree of Glenpool, Okla.; three brothers, Jim Ramey of Sacramento, Calif., Bob Rozelle of Anchorage, Alaska, and Bill Rozell of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The body may be viewed from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Malachi Diaz
OZARK — Malachi Francisco Diaz, infant son of Horacio and Michele Diaz of Ozark, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, in Clarksville.
Rosary will be 7 p.m. today at Roller Funeral Home in Paris. Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with burial at St. Benedict cemetery in Subiaco.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Tyler Harty; a sister, ShyAnn Binz; maternal grandparents and great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Mize, Mr. and Mrs. John Robert Binz, Mr. and Mrs. John S. Binz, Rachel Case, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Schlaf, and Gracie Mize; and paternal grandparent, Consuelo Octaviano of Mexico.
Pallbearers will be Horacio Diaz, Joshua Helms, Antonio Jimenez, Gleazar Linarez and Tito Zamorano.

Thomas Preston
Thomas Ralph Preston, 65, of Fort Smith died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in Fort Smith. He was a vendor with the Vending Facility Program for the Blind, a member of the New Bethel Assembly of God and a ham radio operator.
He is survived by his wife, Retha; a daughter, Shirley Bearden of Greenwood; three sisters, June Krueger of Belleville, Wis., Carol Canada of Van Buren and Linda Dinger of DeQueen; a brother, Elmo Preston Jr. of Jefferson, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be the Rev. Hoyt Ming, Charles Jones, Harold Bibbs, Paul White, Robert Fowler, Buster Pitchford, Carolyn Conner and Les Asbury Jr.

Angus Hume
Angus Robert Michael “Mikie” Hume, 31, of Fort Smith died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in Van Buren. He was a roofer for Hubert Roofing.
He is survived by two sons, Chandler and David Hume, both of Van Buren; his paternal grandmother, Victoria Hume of Hudson, N.Y.; two sisters, Michelle Bearce and Kathleen Hume, both of Fort Smith; and three brothers, Steven Little and Brian Hume, both of Fort Smith, and Jimmie Little of Cadillac, Mich.
The body will be cremated. No services are planned.
