Adell Johnson
LAVACA — Adell Johnson, 66, of Lavaca died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in a local hospital. She was born Jan. 22, 1938, in Banner. She was a homemaker, a member of the Cedar Grove Community Church in Paris and the widow of Raymond Johnson.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Lavaca with burial at Oak Valley cemetery south of Lavaca.
She is survived by two daughters, Wilma Goff of Van Buren and Marilyn Johnson of the home; three sons, Arlen Johnson of Branch, Calvin Johnson of Paris and Kenneth Johnson of Booneville; a sister, Clara Stonewalter of Heber Springs; two brothers, Roy Robbins of Pekin, Ill., and Glenn Robbins of Concord; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Zachary Moore and Bryan, Nathan, Rick, Marvin and Robert Johnson.
The body may be viewed from 2 to 8:30 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
John Putman
OZARK — John Raymond Putman, 78, of Ozark died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in Ozark. He was born March 27, 1926, in Ozark. He was a dispatcher for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, a Baptist, an Army veteran of World War II and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark.
He is survived by three sons, Raymond Putman and Kevin Gazaway, both of Ozark, and John Putman of California; three sisters, Christine Younger and Frances Connor, both of Covina, Calif., and Judy Everett of San Dimas, Calif.; four brothers, Buddy Putman of Redding, Calif., and Bill, Jim and Sam Putman, all of Covina; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The body may be viewed beginning at 8 a.m. Monday.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Clara Dombek Hundley
Clara Dombek Hundley, 78, of Van Buren died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, in Van Buren. She was born March 6, 1926, in Denning to Frank Dombek and Aploenia Dombek. She was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Van Buren.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Highland cemetery in Ozark with the Rev. Bob Eyres officiating under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.
She is survived by her husband, Jack Hundley of Van Buren; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Deborah Hundley of Brandon, Fla.; three sisters, Sophie Crawford, Springdale, Frances Yeager, Van Buren, and Felicia Davis, Great Falls, Mont.; and two grandchildren, Scott Hundley and Bobby Hundley, both of Brandon.
Mrs. Peggy June Moore Knight
Mrs. Peggy June Moore Knight, 75, of Fort Smith, formerly of Van Buren, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at a local hospital.
She was a retired loan officer with Wells-Fargo Bank in North Long Beach, Calif., and a member of AARP and the Order of the Eastern Star, Fort Smith Chapter 237. Her husband, Frank O. Knight Sr., preceded her in death.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21 at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
She is survived by a daughter, Debbie McKenzie of Twenty-Nine Palms, Calif.; three sons, Frank Knight Jr. of Fort Smith, Ronald Knight of Van Buren and Larry Knight Sr. of Alma; a brother, Don Moore of Fort Smith; an aunt, Patricia Bell of Fort Smith; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jim Hadley, Lance Knight, Larry D. Knight, Josh Knight and Travis Smith.

James Ansley
MENA — James William Ansley, 57, of Mena died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004 in Mena. He was born Dec. 13, 1946, in Modesto, Calif. He was a farmer and a member of the Cattlemen’s Association and Salem Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Dallas Avenue Baptist Church in Mena with burial to follow at Nunley cemetery in Mena under the direction of Hall Funeral Service of Mena.
He is survived by his companion, Quayda Sullivan of Mena; two daughters, Bonita Kent and Jennifer Simmons, both of Mena; a son, Donald Ansley of Hot Springs; two sisters, Letha Anderson and Sharon Snow, both of Hatfield; a brother, Bill Ansley of Tulsa; and three grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Paul Longest
COVE — Paul David Longest, 56, of Cove died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, in Little Rock. He was born May 2, 1948, in Vincennes, Ind. He received a Purple Heart for his service with the Army in Vietnam. He was a carpet cleaner and a member of Vandervoort First Baptist Church.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife, Debbie; two daughters, Suzanne Hickson of Cove and Jenny Weems of Denham Springs, La.; two sons, Aaragon Markwell of Eatonville, Wash., and Michael Roser of Mississippi; his mother, Gladys Longest of Vincennes; a brother, Michael Longest of Longmont, Colo.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Darren Parker
LAMAR — Darren Eugene Parker, 32, of Lamar died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, in Flat Rock. He was a pipe fitter.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel in Clarksville with burial at East Point cemetery in London.
He is survied by his wife, Carmen; two sons, Darren and Landon Parker, both of Lamar; his parents, Robert and Kathryn Parker of Flat Rock; and a sister, Lisa Gibbons of Flat Rock.
Pallbearers will be Raymond, Russell and Ronnie Parker, Jeffrey and David Noyes, and Anthony Davis.

Samuel Edward Floyd
Samuel Edward Floyd, 80, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, in a local hospital. He was born Feb. 16, 1924, in Mulberry. Was a member of Haven Heights Baptist Church. Was retired from the 188th Fighter Wing Air National Guard. Was an Army veteran of World War II. Retired from Rheem Manufacturing.
Preceded in death by a son, Junior Floyd.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Lewis Funeral Chapel with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Billie of the home; a daughter, Joyce Bird of Fort Smith; two sons, Garry Floyd of Van Buren and Bobby Floyd of Portersville, Calif.; mother of Joyce Bird and Garry Floyd — Irene Floyd of Fort Smith and Junior Floyd; three stepdaughters, Jackie Hargis of Keota, Okla., Sherri McMaster of Van Buren and Laurie Brambl of Pocola; a stepson, Mike Johnson of Fort Smith; nine grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Hazel Virginia Evans
Hazel Virginia Evans, 83, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, in a local hospital. She was born Feb. 1, 1921, in Van Buren. She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, member of Eastern Star. She retired from First National Bank after 27 years of employment.
Preceded in death by her husband, Jack Evans; and a son, Bobby Evans Sr.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. today at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Roselawn cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
She is survived by a brother, Argus Belue of Fort Smith; two nieces, Della Faye Boyd of Fort Smith and Lula Mae Woods of Greenwood; one grandson and wife, Bobby and Michelle Evans Jr. of Bentonville; three great-grandchildren, Caleb, Parker and Emmalee Evans of Bentonville.

Larry J. Fryer
Larry J. Fryer, 50, of Hackett passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, in Fort Smith. He was a self-employed painter for Larry’s Painting and Repair. He was the minister of True Light Christian Center in Fort Smith. He had a broadcast called “Closer Walk Ministry” on Spirit 106.3, was an ordained minister through Jubliee World Outreach in Muskogee, Okla., and Independent Assemblies of Blackwell, Okla. He also had a street ministry in Fort Smith.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. today at Evangel Temple with burial at Oak cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; two daughters, Joanna Fryer of Fort Smith and Jillian Fryer of Barling; a son, Josiah Fryer of Barling; a stepdaughter, Jodie Fryer of Kansas; five stepsons, Mark Dye of Fort Smith, Justin Dye of Van Buren, Jamie Mattingly of Van Buren, Michael Mattingly of Charleston and John Riley of Fort Smith; his mother, Edith Fryer of New Haven, Conn.; three sisters, Betty Sullivan of New Haven, Conn., Jacqueline Francis of New Haven, Conn., and Theresa Landolfi of South Carolina; two brothers, Francis Fryer and George Fryer Jr., both of New Haven, Conn.; and 10 grandchildren.

Martha Sue King
Martha Sue King was born in Wabash, Ind., child of Guy and Elsie Ruth Hindel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl LeRoy King. She departed this life on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, in Fort Smith.
Her church and community organizations include: Member of the Solid Rock Nazarene Church, where she served as organist, past president of the HCE of LeFlore County, member of the Rock Island Quilting Club and the Roses of Panama Quilting Club.
She leaves to cherish her memory three loving daughters, Evelyn Watson of Huntington, Sandy Vandivere of Amarillo, Texas, and Bobbi King of Temple, Texas; a sister, Mary Ethlyn Morris of Bradenton, Fla.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; along with several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Solid Rock Nazarene Church in Rock Island, Okla., under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.

William G. “Bill” Swindle
William G. “Bill” Swindle passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at the age of 79, at his home in Van Buren. He was born in Oakman, Ala., on Nov. 17, 1924.
Bill served in the U.S. Army and spent most of his life in sales. He was the past owner of the Van Buren Western Auto Store for 30 years. Prior to his illness, he was active in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, served on the board of directors of Peoples Bank, was a member of the Van Buren Chamber of Commerce, had been a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher since 1984, and was also a member of Van Buren Civil Service Commission and the Knights of Columbus.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Swindle; his daughter, Phyllis Hedrick of Fort Smith and her husband, Joe Hedrick; two grandsons, Scott and Chris Hedrick, both of Fort Smith; two sisters, Geraldine Green and Mary Elizabeth Laurent; and a brother-in-law, Chalmers Laurent of Alabama.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Van Buren today at 11:30 a.m. with burial at 1 p.m. at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.

Matthew Addison Richard
Matthew Addison Richard, 22, formerly of Fort Smith, died unexpectedly, Monday Sept. 27, 2004, in Arlington, Texas. Matt was born to Elizabeth (Cornwell) and David Joseph Richard in Joplin, Mo., on Jan. 21, 1982. Matt moved with his parents to North Little Rock in 1984 and attended Immaculate Conception Elementary School. The family moved to Fort Smith in 1995, and Matt attended Trinity Junior High and was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. He graduated with honors from Southside High School in 2000, where he lettered in both baseball and football. Matt was awarded a scholarship to attend Lyon College in Batesville, where he graduated magna cum laude in 2004. While at Lyon, Matt played Scots baseball for two years, was a member of Alpha Chi Academic Honor Society and received the Clarence Adams Memorial Award in 2004. Matt enrolled in graduate school at the University of Texas, Arlington, pursuing a master’s degree in urban and regional planning.
Matt loved to travel and explore. He love to know people from different cultures and had traveled several times to Europe and Japan.
Matt was preceded in death by two grandmothers, Ione Cornwell and Norma Lee Richard. He is survived by his parents, David and Elizabeth Richard of Conway; two brothers, Bradley and Alex; and a sister, Jennifer. Grandparents, William and Mary Lynn Cornwell of Tulsa and Carl Richard of Joplin, Mo.; and his beloved Jessica Price of Little Rock.
Matt was part of a close and extended family who loved him dearly — aunts: Nancy Morgan and husband, Larry of Owasso, Okla., Barbie Reif and husband, John of Tulsa, Priscilla Reed and husband, Larry of St. Louis, Sandy Roderique and husband, Chuck of El Paso, Texas. Uncles: Jack Cornwell and wife, Andrea of Fayetteville, Jeff Jeffers and wife, Leslie of South Bend, Ind., Ron Richard and wife, Patty of Joplin, Mo., Randy Richard and wife, Susan of Fort Smith, Barry Richard and wife, Terrie of Joplin, Mo.; as well as 19 cousins.
Rosary will be recited Sunday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with a funeral Mass celebrating Matt’s life Monday, Oct. 4 at noon at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be David Scott Baker, Thiago Bazler, Bill Pendergist, Brice Richard, Oliver Richard, Daniel Snider, Patrick Staed and Billy Strack.
