Ralph Duckworth
Ralph Dougley “Sundown” Duckworth, 85, of Denning, formerly of Fort Smith, died Wednesday, July 14, 1999, in Fort Smith. He retired from the Navy. He served 10 years in the Army prior to joining the Navy. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at the U.S. National cemetery of Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his caregiver, Daisy McClellan of Denning and his closest friends, Shelva and Bobby Goodwin of Fort Smith, Shirley and Rex Mathews of Fort Smith and Clarence Jordan of Denning.

Vernon Barlow
Vernon O. Barlow, 76, of Fort Smith died Friday, July 16, 1999, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was a retired plumber from Bugg Plumbing. He was an Army veteran and Purple Heart Recipient of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and DAV, Post No. 1 in Little Rock and Albert Pike Christian Church in Fort Smith.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Albert Pike Christian Church of Fort Smith with burial at Mount Olive cemetery in Midland under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Barlow; four grandchildren, Angela Barlow Smith, Wallace Lee Barlow III, Melissa Lynn Barlow Earnhart and Timothy Jason Barlow; and three great-grandchildren.
The body may be viewed from noon to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The Rev. Lawrence Washington
EDNA, Texas — The Rev. Lawrence “Larry” Washington, 72, of Edna died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, in San Antonio, Texas. He pastored United Methodist Churches in Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas, including Mallalieu United Methodist Church in Fort Smith. He retired in Forrest City and moved back to Morales, Texas.
Funeral was Tuesday, July 6, 1999, in Edna under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home of Edna.
He is survived by his wife, Emma Jean; three daughters, Laurete Wright of Fort Smith, Ollivett Brothers of Midwest City, Okla. and Vantrese Tinnon of Houston, Texas; one sister, Lura Vaughn of Houston; five grandchildren including Tianisha “Nikkie” Griffin of Sacramento, Calif. and Marques Young of Fort Smith; and two great-grandchildren.

Rosemary Rowe
Rosemary Rowe, 60, of Van Buren died Thursday, July 15, 1999, in a local nursing home. She was a member of the Eastern Heights Baptist Church and a homemaker. She is the widow of Fay Rowe.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday in Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gill cemetery in Van Buren.
She is survived by five stepdaughters, Netia Faye Bennett and Margaret Jane Fisher, both of Van Buren, Neva Jean Rowe of Springdale, Deborah Hallum of Muldrow and Donna Rowe of Fort Smith; one son, Douglas Tanguay of Van Buren; one stepson, James Nathan Rowe of Van Buren; one sister Joan Mederios of Fall River, Mass.; four brothers, John “Jack” Carvalho and Benjaman Carvalho, both of Fall River, Mass., Raymond Carvalho of California and Robert Carvalho of Swansea, Mass.; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will Bobby Zimmerley, Darrell Farrquah, Kelvin Cholousky, Mike France, Travis Rowe and Terry Towzen.

Charles Beasley, Jr.
Charles A. Beasley, Jr., 81, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, in Fort Smith. He was a retired senior vice president and trust officer of First National Bank, a member of First United Methodist Church and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, with burial at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances; three sons, Charles III of Newport, N.C., Robert of Broken Arrow, Okla., and John of Fort Smith; one sister, Brooksie Walker of Houston; nine grandchildren, Charles IV, Robert Jr., Aaron, Jared, Matthew and Brian Beasley, Jennifer Faino, Sarah Kathryn Beasley and Stacey Callahan; and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bill Buergler, Dr. Charles Hartsfield, Clifford Davis, David McDonald, Bob Miller and Charles Schuffield.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Aldersgate Sunday School class.
The family will visit with friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 200 North 15th, Fort Smith, AR 72902.

Ruth Cardwell
Ruth Cardwell, 88, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, in a local hospital. She was a retired secretary for R.K. Rogers and a member of First Baptist Church.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fentress Mortuary Chapel, with burial at Union Ridge cemetery in Huntington.
She is survived by two nieces, Nancy Scamardo and Sharon Ann Marrs, both of Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Sam Voll, Gene Staton, Jerry Vest, Tony Jones, David Ferguson, LaJohn Jones and Charles Scamardo Sr.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Business Women’s Sunday School class.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 14th and Grand Ave., Fort Smith, AR 72901, or the Sparks Foundation, 1311 South I St., Fort Smith, AR 72901.

Angilee Thomas
Angilee Y. Thomas, 67, of Van Buren died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, in a local hospital. She was a retired typist for the government and a member of the Maple Shade Church of the Nazarene.
Funeral will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel Inc., of Fort Smith, with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Roy; four sisters, Edna Robbins, Sandra Stewart and Deberta Darrel, all of Van Buren, and Tammy Corbin of Wagoner, Okla.; and five brothers, Troy, James, Timmy and Donnie Young, all of Van Buren, and Ronnie Young of Hackett.
The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Maple Shade Church of the Nazarene at 1411 Maple Shade Road, Alma, AR 72921.

Anson Bartlett
DALLAS — Anson Bartlett, 24, of Dallas, formerly of Van Buren, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, in Spiro. He was a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church of Fort Smith and an apprentice electrician with Darden Electric in Dallas.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Van Buren, with burial at Evergreen cemetery in Alma under the direction of Edwards Van Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Anne and Mark Spellman of Alma; his father, Gary Bartlett of Hillsboro, N.C.; his maternal grandmother, Wilma Hays of Van Buren; his paternal grandmother, Ruby Bartlett of Greensboro, N.C.; his paternal stepgrandparents, Eleanor and William Spellman of Louisville, Ky.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Elliot Hays, Dr. J.B. Hays, Tommy, Alvy, Darrell, Wally Hays and Blake Hays and Justin Thomas.
The family will visit with friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Nona Groves
Nona Agnes Groves, 90, of Van Buren died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, in a Van Buren nursing home. She was a homemaker and the widow of Ralph Groves.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Old Jenny Lind cemetery in Jenny Lind under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Lee Groves of Dallas; one son, Bob of Camden; one brother, Ray Phillips of Jenny Lind; three grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Lucille Hiller
Lucille Corinne Hiller, 96, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, in local nursing home. She was a member of United Methodist Women, the G.C. Hardin Sunday School, the Rebekah Circle and a charter member and former chapter president of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Roebuck Chapel of the First Methodist Church in Fort Smith, with burial at Roselawn cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
She is survived by one daughter, Amanda Smith of Fort Smith; one son, Sam of Fort Smith; one sister, Frances Slicer of Hollister, Mo.; and six grandchildren, Page Owen of Tulsa, Pat Hiller of Poteau, Debbie Smith of Alamogordo, N.M., and James Brown and Sam and Scott Austin, all of Fort Smith.
Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Fort Smith.

Leatha Miller
PINE BLUFF — Leatha Earp Miller, 85, of Pine Bluff died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, in Pine Bluff. She was a retired Poteau teacher and the widow of James Miller.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Southside Baptist Church in Poteau, with burial at Oakland cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
She is survived by one son, Dwight of Pine Bluff; one sister, Nevah Ragland of Edmond, Okla.; five grandchildren, Michell and Jeff Coats, both of Houston, Dwight and Terri Miller II, both of Nashville, Ark., and Melinda Miller of Fayetteville; and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the youth ministry of Southside Baptist Church in Poteau or the television ministry of First Baptist Church in Pine Bluff.

Carylene Roberts
HUNTINGTON — Carylene Roberts, 53, of Huntington died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, in her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Westside Pentecostal Church.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dawson cemetery in Milltown under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Mansfield.
She is survived by her husband, Richard; two daughters, Karen Shea of Huntington and Debi Black of Fort Smith; three sons, Ronnie of Mansfield and Larry and Richard Jr., both of Huntington; five sisters, Violet Ward of Keota, Pauline Canada of Mineral Wells, Texas, Linda Hamilton of Glenwood, Ark., and Sharon Salsa of Mena; five brothers, Roy Harmon of Lowell, Ark., Andy Harmon of Glenwood, Wayne Harmon of Spiro, Steve Harmon of Mineral Wells and David Harmon of Breckenridge, Texas; and seven grandchildren.
The body may be viewed from 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Willie Clark
Willie Mae Clark, 77, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, in a local hospital. She was a sales clerk in retail.
Graveside service was 1 p.m. Sept. 10 at the National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Moore of Fort Smith, Diana Bland of Stover, Mo., and Angelia Fenstermaker of Dobson, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Eula Newell
Eula L. Newell, 90, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, in a local nursing home. She was a homemaker and a member of New Bethel Assembly of God Church.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday in Putman Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at the National cemetery in Fort Smith.
She is survived by three sons, Walter of Roland, and Wayne and James, both of Fort Smith; one sister, Helen Kalinsky of Gregory, Mich.;11 grandchildren, Walter D. Newell II, Granada Banta, Allan Newell, Lynde Newell, Bryan Newell, Beth Wilson, Deanna Newell, Scott Newell, Aaron Newell, Robert Newell and Daniel Newell and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
The family will visit with friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Charles Pitts
CLARKSVILLE — Charles “Pat” Pitts, 92, of Clarksville, formerly of Fort Smith died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999 in Clarksville. He was a member and deacon of Central Presbyterian Church of Fort Smith, a member of the Clarksville Country Club where he was an avid golfer, a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the American Legion.
Funeral will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Central Presbyterian Church with burial at the National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
He is survived by one son, Charles Pitts Jr. of Plano, Texas; one brother, Hill (Horner) Pitts of Raliegh, N.C.; one granddaughter, Jill Alexander of Allen, Texas; and one great-granddaughter, Danielle Alexander.
Pallbearers will be Bill Rodgers, Hartsell Hall, Claude Hall, Bill Holder and John Whitt.
The family will visit with friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
