V.V. Fletcher
V.V. “Rube” Fletcher, 88, of Fort Smith died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in a local hospital. He was born Nov. 29, 1916, in Bauxite. He was one of the original owners of Southland Furniture Inc., a member of American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the widower of Ocie Fletcher.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith.
He is survived by two daughters, Dolores Wells of Rye Hill and Betty Hall of Fort Smith; a son, Bruce Fletcher of Fort Smith; a sister, Mona McElroy of Hixson, Tenn.; a stepbrother, Harry Herbert of Carlsbad, N.M.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
The family will visit with friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mayme Whittle
ALMA — Mayme Brasuell Whittle, 92, of Alma died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, in a local nursing home. She was born Feb. 2. 1913, in Dripping Springs community. She was a homemaker, a former nurse, of the Freewill Baptist faith and the widow of Roy Brasuell.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ocker Funeral Home Chapel in Alma with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
She is survived by her husband, Herbert; two daughters, Emma Cox of Harrah, Okla., and Trecia Lloyd of Alma; two stepsisters, Ellen Gregg and Thelma Phillips, both of Wichita, Kan.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Dale and Ralph Brasuell, Bill Matlock, David Hurt, Tommy Greer and Jim Lloyd.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Juanita Primm
DEPORT, Texas — Juanita Geneva Primm, 84, of Deport, Texas, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, in Deport. She was born Oct. 18, 1920, in Barber. She was a retired pastry cook and the widow of Sylvoit Primm.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Deport, Texas, with burial at Evergreen cemetery under the direction of Wood Funeral Home of Deport, Texas.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Thomas of Lake Alfred, Fla.; a son, Dwight Primm of Mesquite, Texas; a sister, Edith Kimes of Fort Smith; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Glenn Smith
ENTERPRISE, Okla. — Glenn H. Smith, of Enterprise died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in Tulsa. He was a retired Marine and retired from EBR Parish Sheriff’s Department as captain of the Detective Division.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Stigler with burial at Brooken cemetery in Brooken under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home of Stigler.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Sharon Crow of Griffin, Ga., and Karla Dukes of Denham Springs, La.; three sons, Raymond Smith of Erath, La., Holland Smith of St. Francisville, La., and Robert Smith of Zachary, La.; 18 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 2 to 5 p.m. today and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Wylie Brewer
RUDY — Wylie Brewer, 62, of Rudy died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in his home. He attended Amazing Grace Fellowship Church, was a retired circuit court reporter and a former Crawford County clerk.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gracelawn cemetery in Van Buren.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian; two sons, Dale and David Brewer, both of Rudy; a brother, Boyne Brewer of Mount Ida; and four grandchildren.
The family will visit with friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Ola Gray Philpott
Ola Gray Philpott, 105, of Van Buren died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in Van Buren. She was the fourth of 10 children born to Margaret Ella Ray and William Russell Gray. She was born in Marble on May 24, 1899. The gray family, accompanied by W.R. Gray’s father, moved to Springdale around 1906. Ola told of the family putting all of its worldly goods on and behind wagons for the move that took two days. Occasionally the younger children ran alongside the wagons to break the monotony of the trip. The entourage rested for the night at a campground in the Spring Valley Community, about the halfway mark of the journey.
Around 1917, Ola moved to Fort Smith to live with her sister Amyl Jones and family and attend Draughn’s Business College. She was employed by The Music Company while awaiting the discharge of Zelmer “Cap” Philpott from the Army. Ola and Cap were married
on May 12, 1921. In the early years of their marriage, the couple lived in several cities in Washington and in Portland, Ore., and later in and around Los Angeles. Ola continued to work as a bookkeeper wherever they lived, and Cap sold Oriental rugs. At that time the Jones family lived in California also, so the couples shared housing.
In the mid 1920s the Philpotts returned to Fort Smith, and for nearly 20 years they lived on Rogers Avenue, where their home and a service station shared the same corner lot. The Philpotts retained ownership of their property on Rogers Avenue for several years after they bought a large acreage on Lee Creek near the Oklahoma border just off Dora Road. There they built a home to serve as a gathering place for all of the extended family. Having no children of her own didn’t cause Ola to miss out on having young people around her. “The Farm” was a haven for many generations of family to share, spend work time during weekends and vacations, and gather to meet their aunts, uncles and cousins who were drawn to the family matriarch. It was a working ranch, with cattle, horses, fences to mend, hay to bale and many chores to do. At high noon, a large bell would ring, which was a signal from Ola for all to gather for a hearty lunch, which hired hands and family would share together. The couple became affectionately known as “Aunt Ola” and “Uncle Cap” to their family and friends. Cap died in 1969 while at work on the farm, doing what he loved.
Ola’s hours in her flower gardens were truly a labor of love. No one who visited went away without a “care” package of plants. She was a member of the Fort Smith Garden Club for over 50 years. When the Garden Club hosted a 100th birthday party for her in May 1999, she said, “I’ve worked hard all my life, and hard work never hurt anyone. I’ve lived a full life and I’ve been blessed in so many ways.” Part of that blessing was having survived three tornadoes — two on the farm, many years ago, and one at her last home on Mount Vista in Van Buren on the night of April 21, 1996.
For many years, Ola was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Fort Smith. She inspired others with her faithful attendance. On a regular basis, Ola would drive from Van Buren to her church in Fort Smith while picking up other members who were unable to drive. Her care for others was also evident as she regularly spent time with friends who were in nursing homes, and as she prepared and delivered meals to those who were homebound.
In addition to her husband, Zelmer “Cap” Philpott, Ola was preceded in death by her siblings, Lelland, Amyl, Grace, Elbridge, Doyle, Pearl, Mary, Dick and Margaret Elizabeth. She is survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial to follow at Roselawn cemetery in Fort Smith.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The Rev. Arles “Mitch” Replogle
The Rev. Arles “Mitch” Replogle, 80, of Van Buren died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in Van Buren. He retired as a minister of the Pentecostal Church of God after 45 years and was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Muskogee. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Retha Replogle.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Woodlawn cemetery in Fort Smith with military honors.
He is survived by three daughters, Diann Dugan of Fort Smith, Rita Kirby of Van Buren and Becky Cook of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two sons, Hubert “Copas” Replogle of Pocola and Stanley Replogle of Leander, Texas; three sisters, Merle Higgins and Mary Harvel, both of Fresno, Calif., and Margaret Hamilton of San Antonio; a brother, George Replogle of Fresno; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and granddaughters.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, 700 Jefferson St., Van Buren.

Norma Jo Corley
Norma Jo Corley, 74, of Ratcliff died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was born May 25, 1930, in Fort Smith to Earl Hill and Bonnie Nunnellee Hill. She was a retired sales clerk for Baggett’s Drug Store in Paris and The Leader Store in Paris. She was secretary for the Logan County Cancer Society and a member of Caulksville Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Caulksville Cumberland Presbyterian Church, officiated by the Rev. Bill VanMeter. Burial will be at Caulksville cemetery under the direction of Brotherton Brothers Funeral Home of Paris.
She is survived by her husband, John “Bill” Corley; and a son, John Earl Corley of Austin, Texas.
Pallbearers will be James Vanlandingham, Todd and Jimmie Patterson, William White, Bennie Rausch and Frances Frederick.
Honorary pallbearers will be J.W. Friddle, Larry Skeets and Haskell Casalman.

Ruth Edwards
Ruth Evelyn Edwards, 81, of Fort Smith died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was a retired cosmetologist, a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Arkansas Retired Military Auxiliary, the Fleet Reserve Association and the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Troy; two daughters, Paulette Underwood of Tulsa and Judy Clark of Fort Smith; a son, Ricky Edwards of Fort Smith; two sisters, Mary Shumaker of Richmond, Va., and Shirley Byers of Blacksburg, S.C.; a brother, William Woodall of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Sandra Link, 48, of Van Buren died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in Van Buren. She was a nurse’s aide.

She is survived by two daughters, Misty and Ashley Canada of Van Buren; two sons, Dennis Link Jr. of Van Buren and Joshua Link of Keota, Okla.; her mother, Alice Canada of Paris; three sisters, Phyllis Turner and Debbie Kinney, both of Paris, and Darla Dorrough of Dardanelle; and two brothers, Clinton and Jesse Canada, both of Paris.

She is survived by a daughter, Darla Llemit of Van Buren; two sons, Robert Fagan Jr. of Little Rock and Kevin Fagan of Alma; three sisters, Jane Dykes of Grandberry, Texas, and Ann Reynolds and Wanda Webb, both of Van Buren; and seven grandchildren.

Lucille A. Taylor, 95, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker, a member of the First Christian Church of Fort Smith, a former beautician and a bridge life master. She was the widow of H.L. Taylor.
