Edgar Marquess
Edgar Linn Marquess, 85, of Fort Smith died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, in Fort Smith. He was self-employed with Linn’s Thrift Store in Fort Smith, served in the Engineering Corps in the Aleutian, Islands, was a member of the Lions Club, the Church of Christ and Baptist Church and the widower of Gladys Marquess.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Fentress Mortuary Chapel with burial at Hillcrest cemetery in Las Cruses, N.M.
He is survived by his wife, Louise; two daughters, Anita Stevens of Raymore, Mo., and Nancy Wiese of Houston; a son, Ed Marquess Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Alta Downey and Tammy Rogers; two stepsons, Randy Cozad and Shawn Rogers; three sisters, Ann Jacobi of Las Cruces, N.M., Betty Lewis of Albuquerque, N.M. and Margaret Boehm of Detroit; several grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.

Frank Comdeco
Frank Comdeco, 80, of Memphis, grocer, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at his home. Services were held Feb. 14 at Forest Hill Funeral Home East with burial in Forest Hill cemetery East. He was an Army veteran. Mr. Comdeco, the husband of Pauline Comdeco for 50 years, also leaves two daughters, Cheryll Cates of Middleton, Tenn., and Beth Ross of Bartlett, Tenn.; a son, Wayne Comdeco of Falls Church, Va.; a sister-in-law, Mary Katherine Johnston of Van Buren; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association. Obituary submitted by Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
Helen J. Suter, 61, of Fort Smith passed away Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, in Fort Smith. She was a former waitress at Bolin’s Restaurant and of the Protestant faith.
Memorial service will be 7 p.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
She is survived by two sons, Thomas W. Suter of Fort Smith and Ronnie Dale Suter and wife Robin of Fort Smith; two sisters, Sharon Rempert of Lake Du Flambeau, Wis., and Barbara Vitha of Woodruff, Wis.; and four grandchildren, Thomas W. Suter Jr., Justin M. Suter, Kristi N. Suter and Lacy D. Suter, all of Fort Smith.
Family will visit with friends following the memorial service at Edwards Funeral Home.

Rev. Orville Haley
The Rev. Orville Haley, 82, of Van Buren died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, in a local hospital. He was a retired Baptist minister and served in the Army Air Force during World War II. After retirement, he became a short-term missionary for the Southern Baptist Convention, visiting some 30 countries, primarily in Asia and Africa.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at the First Baptist Church in Van Buren with burial at U.S. National cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife, June of the home; one daughter, Judy Riley of Fort Smith; two sons, Allen Haley of Van Buren and David Haley of Birmingham, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Marvin Hathaway, Leroy Alexander, Bill Davis, Larry Montgomery, Jack Webb and Roger Bullington. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Mike Hurst Sunday school class at First Baptist Church in Van Buren.
Viewing will begin 8 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005. The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home in Van Buren.

A celebration of life service was held Feb. 4, 2005, for James Edward “Jim” (Bubby) Heiss, age 60, of Eugene, Ore., who died Jan. 31, 2005, of complications of diabetes. Jim was born Sept. 7, 1944, in Fort Smith. He graduated from St. Anne’s Academy in Fort Smith and earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting at California State University in Los Angeles. He served in the Navy from 1966-68. He married Jennifer Haycox on Dec. 15, 1970 in La Canada, Calif. He worked as a certified public accountant at the University of Oregon and as associate director of student affairs. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, spending time with his family, travel and bowling. He was a member of Boy Scouts, Oregon Community Credit Union and Roundtable of Eugene. Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Jennifer; his son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Leah Heiss of Altadena, Calif.; his daughter, Janet Heiss and her fiance, Isaac Arms, of Madison, Wis.; seven brothers, Fred of Hollister, Mo., Joe of Greenwood, Charles and Dave of Yucca Valley, Calif., Tom of Winthrop, Maine, Harry of Arlington, Va., Tony of Fort Smith; three sisters, Kay Heiss of Fayetteville, Margie Fletcher of Wylie, Texas, and Patti Smith of Greenwood. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Kathryn Heiss; a sister, Mary Ann Heiss; and two brothers, Bill and Herb Heiss. The service was held at Ebbert Memorial United Methodist Church in Springfield, Ore., where Jim had served many years as scoutmaster. Major Family Funeral Home in Springfield handled the arrangements. A memorial will be held in conjunction with the Saint Anne’s reunion in Fort Smith in June 2005, and a family memorial will be held at the Heiss family reunion in Washington, D.C., in June. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Heiss Family Association and sent to HFA c/o Dave Heiss, Post Office Box 205, Pioneertown, CA 92268-0205.

Patricia “Pat” Patterson Haberle
Patricia “Pat” Patterson Haberle, 79, departed this life to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born Jan. 25, 1926, in Jacksonville, Texas, to Pat Patterson and Emma Donley Patterson of Jacksonville.
Pat attended Tivy High School in Kerrville, Texas, where she was a band majorette, and attended Texas Women’s University, studying chemical engineering. Pat was a professional real estate broker in Texas and Arkansas. She pioneered participation in this field by women, becoming a commercial broker in 1965. She married James D. Mickle, engineer (Mickle, Wagner, Coleman Inc.) in 1967 and practiced real estate in Fort Smith for 23 years. In 1991 she moved to Tyler, Texas, to be with her devoted husband, David L. Haberle of Jacksonville. During her career Pat served as president of the Texas Council of Garden Clubs and was an avid gardener all her life, winning many flower shows with her first place arrangements and also teaching this craft. She was a Master Life bridge player and an avid traveler, having visited every continent on earth. Pat was a very loving wife and mother as well.
Her surviving family includes her sons, Steve Patterson McCarroll and wife Robin, Scott Thomas McCarroll, Kerry Donley McCarroll and wife Angela, all of Friendswood, Texas; grandson, Kevin Sean McCarroll of Friendswood; cousins, Richard Donley of Sherman, Texas, and Betty Robertson of Houston; as well as a host of other family and friends she loved and cherished in Texas and Arkansas.
Services to celebrate her life will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday at the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Jacksonville, Texas, followed by graveside service and interment at Jacksonville City cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that those wishing to do so may make a memorial contribution in Pat’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org.

Paul Gene “Jay Bird” Elmore
Paul Gene “Jay Bird” Elmore was born Sept. 15, 1940, and went to be with the Lord on Feb. 18, 2005.
Jay Bird was a retired cabinet builder and loved playing his guitar and singing songs.
Jay Bird is survived by his wife of 35 years, Teresa; two sons, Billy Elmore and his wife Charlotte and Tommy Elmore and his wife Angie, both of Huntington; four brothers, Robert of Hartford, Armond and Jerry, both of Huntington, and Jess of Midland; two sisters, Leona and Pauline Elmore, both of Huntington; five grandchildren, Dewayne, Jeffery, Brittany, Coby and Tyler; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Joe Bowers, Randy, Bobby and Travis Bowers, Dewayne Elmore, Brad Fuller and Richard McKusker.
Service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Westside Pentecostal Church in Huntington with burial at Huntington cemetery under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood. The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Thomas Brown Rogers
Thomas Brown Rogers, 80, of Clarksville died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, in a Dallas hospital surrounded by family members.
Born in Clarksville, Tom was the son of Pauline May Rogers and Clyde Edward Rogers. He graduated from Clarksville High School in 1943. A World War II veteran, he served in the Army for three years. After that, he pursued a career as a pipefitter. He worked on and managed pipeline projects throughout the United States until his retirement in 1989.
Tom’s accomplishments included being a past worthy patron of the Order of Eastern Star in 1973 and a 32nd degree Mason with 53 years of membership. He also was a member of Pipefitter Union Local 597 of Chicago for more than 56 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 48 years, Fay Walton Rogers, also from Clarksville.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Nyla and Jesse Morgan of West Hills, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Susan Rogers of Dallas; sister and brother-in-law, Catherine “Bitsy” and Carroll Bumpers of Phoenix; granddaughter, Rebecca Rogers of Dallas; sister-in-law Irene Keeling of Daphne, Ala., and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Laverne and Ray Evans of Boulder, Nev.; and five nieces and two nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hardwicke Funeral Home in Clarksville.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Clarksville First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Lance Jones officiating. Burial will be at Oakland cemetery.

J.H. Fowler
ALMA — J.H. Fowler, 74, of Alma died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, in a local hospital. He was born April 6, 1930, in Lake City. He was a retired welder, a member of Concord Baptist Church, a Navy veteran of the Korean War and the widower of Jo Fowler.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Gill cemetery in Van Buren under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Fort Smith.
He is survived by two sons, Steven Fowler of Port Orchard, Wash., and Paul Fowler of Riverside, Calif.; two sisters, Bonnie Cooper of Alma and Betty White of Arlington, Va.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The body may be viewed beginning 3 p.m. today.
The family will visit with friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Concord Baptist Church, 6105 Alma Highway, Van Buren, AR 72956.

Mary Charles
QUITTMAN — Mary Elizabeth “Meb” Charles, 78, of Quitman died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, in Conway. She was a former administrative assistant for University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, formerly Westark Community College, and the widow of James Charles.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with cremain burial at Roselawn cemetery.
She is survived by one daughter, Lee Vernon of Conway; two sons, Jon Charles of Kempner, Texas, and James Charles of Quitman; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Family will visit with friends following the memorial service.

Martin Chapin
Martin E. Chapin, 76, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, in a local hospital. He was a retired ship’s serviceman first class from the Navy and a retired cab driver for Razorback Cab.
Burial of cremains will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at U.S. National cemetery with full military honors under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
He is survived by a daughter, Jammie Spangler of Fort Smith; a sister, Marcella Robertson of Fort Smith; a brother, Marvin Chapin of Lavaca; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Patricia Galloway
WOODLAND PARK, Colo. — Patricia “Mimi” Kirby Galloway, 75, of Woodland Park, Colo., died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, in Woodland Park. She was born May 26, 1929, in Dermott. She was a member of Ute Pass Social Club, PEO Sisterhood Woodland Park Chapter IL, a volunteer at Woodland Park Chamber of Commerce, an accountant for Arkansas Best Corp. and the widow of Albert Galloway.
Services were held in Woodland Park, Colo. Burial will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Roselawn cemetery in Fort Smith. Obituary submitted by Mountain Memorial in Divide, Colo.
She is survived by a daughter, Karen Cunningham of Woodland Park, Colo.; a son, Albert Galloway of Lake Wales, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Dorothy Brown
Dorothy Marie Brown, 80, of Van Buren died Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, in Van Buren. She was in management in food service.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Fort Douglas cemetery under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home of Clarksville.
She is survived by her husband, Joe; and a sister, Elsie Peoples of Johnson County.
The body may be viewed noon to 2 p.m. today, where the family will visit with friends from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

John Bridgman
CLARKSVILLE — John Francis Bridgman, Ph.D., 79, of Clarksville died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, in Clarksville. He was born Sept. 6, 1925, in Kuling, China. He was a college professor and an educational missionary teacher in Japan and a member of the Gideon’s and an Air Force veteran of World War II.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home of Clarksville. Burial will be private.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly; two daughters, Alice Broncheff and Nancy Martin, both of Conway; two sons, John Bridgman Jr. of Austin, Texas, and Paul Bridgman of Sanyo-Cho, Okavama-Ken, Japan; a sister, Eleanor Monteith of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, Dr. Albert Bridgman of Black Mountain, N.C., the Rev. David Bridgman of Orlando, Fla., and the Rev. Stewart Bridgman of Staunton, Va.; and six grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to T.E.A.M. Mission, Gideon’s and Foreign Missions.

Larry Jones
BARLING — Larry R. Jones, 55, of Barling died Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, in his home. He was a lead man in maintenance for Rheem Manufacturing, a member of Freewill Baptist Church in Gravelly and a lifetime member of the NRA.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Freewill Baptist Church in Gravelly with burial at Parks cemetery in Nola under the direction of Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; a daughter, Crissy Carlile of Greenwood; a son, Mark Jones of Muldrow; his mother, Emma Jones of Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Doris Dohrn and Patsy Croft, both of Kansas City, Mo., and Linda Lloyd of Waldron; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Ray Rhodes, Carl Jones, Robert Dabbs, Chuck Miller, Richard Hale and Charles Mendenhall.
The family will visit with friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
