Jimmy Dale Burkett

Retired Lt. Col. Jimmy Dale Burkett, 66, of Rose Bud, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003.

He 21 years in the United States Army including several tours of duty in Vietnam. He was also stationed in Korea and Germany. Following retirement, Jim was involved with Burkett Trucking Company, Investment Banking and recently the Rose Bud Conoco Restaurant. He served the community of Rose Bud as mayor for six years. He served with the Kairos Prison Ministry while serving at Emmaus Christian Retreats.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Killough Burkett of Rose Bud; his children, James Bradley Burkett of Sherwood, Melinda Dale Edmisten of El Paso, Texas, Susan McLean Burkett of Ruidoso, N.M., Robin Taylor Brown of Southaven, Miss., and Pamela Taylor Cowart of Columbus, Ga.; his mother, Reba Webb Burkett of Little Rock; a brother, Don Burkett of Little Rock; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial services were Dec. 3, at the Powell Funeral Home in Searcy. Interment was in the Arkansas Veterans Memorial cemetery in North Little Rock.

Esther G. Smith

Esther Garvin Hammons Smith, 85, of Sherwood, died Nov. 27, 2003.
She is survived by four children, Virginia Collins of Sherwood, Ann Baca, Marilyn Williams, Jim Hammons all of California; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Vernon Garvin; three sisters, Lottie Mae Whitfield, Myrtle Ezell and Mary Rees.

Graveside service was Monday at Sumner cemetery. North Little Rock Funeral Home was in charge.

Brian William Gould

Brian William Gould, 30, of North Little Rock, died Nov. 26, 2003.
He was a self employed jeweler.

Brian is survived by his wife, Carol “Ann” Gould; a son, Hunter William Gould of North Little Rock, parents Gary and Judy Gould of Sherwood; and a sister Tracey Spencer, of Oak Hill, Va.

A celebration of Brian’s life was held Monday, Dec. 1, at Sylvan Hills Community Church with committal in Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Memorial Park. Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home was in charge.

Donations may be made to the Hunter William Gould Memorial Fund at any Twin City Bank.

Faye Eagle

Faye Eagle, age 90, died Nov. 21, 2003. She was a member of Palm Street Church of Christ, Lonoke. Survivors are her daughter, Annette Bryan; a grandson; a sister, Fredia McCuin of Sherwood. Services were Monday at Boyd Funeral Home Chapel, Lonoke, with interment in Lonoke cemetery. Memorials may be made to Palm Street Church of Christ.

Kyle Wesley Bollen

Kyle Wesley Bollen, 16, of Sherwood, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003.

He was a student at North Little Rock High School West Campus, member of the North Little Rock High School Soccer Team and the Club Internacionale Soccer Team. He was also a member of Fellowship Bible Church in North Little Rock. He is survived by his parents, Dr. Lindy and Janet Bollen, Jr., of Sherwood; two sisters, Mary Kendall Bollen, of Sherwood; and Jennifer Joy Fairley, of Moscow, Idaho; grandparents, Dr. Lindy and Bettye Bollen, Sr, of Little Rock. Memorials may be made to Fellowship Bible Church, One East 52nd St., North Little Rock, Ark. 72116. Funeral services were Wednesday at Fellowship Bible Church in North Little Rock. Entombment was at Rest Hills Memorial Park. Arrangements by North Little Rock Funeral Home.

Martha Jo Ferguson Robins
Martha Jo Ferguson Robins, 70, of Strawberry, died Oct. 7, 2004, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.

Born July 3, 1934, in Hartselle, Ala., she was a retired interior decorator and was a "pink lady" at Crittenden Memorial Hospital in West Memphis. She was a member of the City Beautiful Commission in West Memphis and the Strawberry Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Gary Ray Robins and Leland Scott Robins; her parents, Melvin Francis and Edith Avelia Collins Ferguson.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Bernard Robins; a daughter, Tammy Jo Barnett, Harrison; two brothers, Melvin Ferguson Jr., Covington, Ind., and Morris Dale Ferguson, New Albany, Ind.; a sister, Joyce Ferguson Flynn, Batesville; and two grandchildren, Lindsey Jo Jones and Lee Eric Jones.

A memorial service is Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Strawberry Church of Christ with Bill Wheeler and Keith Martin officiating. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. at Crittenden Memorial Park in Marion, with Lyndal Dale officiating. Roller-Crouch-McGee Funeral Home of Cave City has charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Saturday from 9:30 until time of the service at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Paragould Children's Home, 55150 Walcott Road, Paragould, AR 72450.

Mary Kathleen Smith
Mary Kathleen Smith, 99, of Black Rock, died Oct. 6, 2004, at Randolph County Nursing Home in Pocahontas.

Born Feb. 22, 1905, in Imboden, she was the daughter of James Clark and Mattie Anderson Courtney. She was a homemaker and a member of the Black Rock Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Austin Smith; three brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include three sons, Charles Smith, Doniphan, Mo., Billy Smith, Walnut Ridge, and Dickie Smith, Black Rock; three daughters, Virginia Smith, West Memphis, Betty Baldridge, Ottawa, Ill., and Elizabeth Choate, Arlington, Texas; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Black Rock Methodist Church with Bob McMillon and Jerry Pentecost officiating. Burial was in Oak Forest cemetery at Black Rock under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Jewel Leroy Smith
Jewel Leroy Smith, 83, of Ravenden, died Oct. 7, 2004, at The Med in Memphis.

Born Nov. 16, 1920, in Walnut Ridge, he was the son of Arthur and Jewell Slaton Smith. He was a retired sawmill operator and farmer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Lorraine Smith; a son, Robert Leroy Smith.

Survivors include two sons, John Smith and Luther Smith, both of Ravenden; five daughters, Mary Clements, Walnut Ridge, Jewelett Robinson, Springfield, Mo., Hazel Ruth Leonard, Ravenden, Charlene Blann, Killeen, Texas, and Edna Jane Bailey, Ravenden Springs; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Monday at 10 a.m. at Lone Oak Baptist Church, near Ravenden, with Jackie Pickett and Charles Morgan officiating. Burial was in Lone Oak cemetery under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service.

Pallbearers were John Smith, Mark Smith, Randy Clements, Chris Gilliam, Ronnie Bailey, Luke Smith and Robert Blann. Honorary pallbearer was Leslie Henley.

Jim Raliegh Turner
Jim Raliegh Turner, 76, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died Oct. 4, 2004.

Born Aug. 5, 1928, in Strawberry, he was the son of Louis Napoleon and Esther Battles Turner.

He was a 1946 graduate of Strawberry High School, where he was senior class president, and attended Arkansas State College in Jonesboro for two years before entering the military. He served in the Army Air Force Services and later served three years in the U.S. Army 5th Armored division in Korea. He retired from Sunbeam Bakery in 1988, after 29 years of service.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary; four brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Velvarose Rowland Turner, whom he married April 9, 1953, in Wichita, Kan.; a daughter, Bridget Gayle Turner Koenen, Phoenix; two brothers, Jack Turner, Ephrata, Wash., and Doug Turner, Newton, Kan.; a sister Armilda Ralls, San Diego; and two granddaughters, Tishan Koenen and Shantih Koenen.

Funeral was Friday at the First Baptist Church of Scottsdale, Ariz. Burial was in Green Acres of Scottsdale.

Norman Wheelis
Norman Wheelis, 65, of Walnut Ridge, died Oct. 12, 2004, at Walnut Ridge.

Arrangements will be announced by House-Gregg Funeral Home.

Elsie Ann Wilson
Elsie Ann Wilson, 92, of Jonesboro, formerly of Walnut Ridge and Williford, died Oct. 9, 2004, at St. Elizabeth's Nursing Home in Jonesboro.

Born Jan. 6, 1912, in Jesup, she was the daughter of Thomas Mayfield and Sarah Elizabeth Blackwell Daily. She and her husband, Clead Wilson, owned a grocery store in Williford, until his death on July 4, 1966. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, George Thomas Wilson and an infant son; two sisters and a brother.

Survivors include two sons, Herbert Wilson and Franklin D. Wilson, both of Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Joann Wilson, Hardy; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Higginbotham Chapel in Hardy, with Mike Glover officiating. Burial was in Williford cemetery under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service of Hardy.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Marshall, Chris Marshall, Steve Edwards, Ryan Barnett, Lucas Boyer and Bruce Wilson.

Charlene Bounds
Charlene Bounds, 81, of Pocahontas, died Dec. 4, 2004, at St. Bernards in Jonesboro.

Born in Delaplaine, she was a homemaker and was of the Baptist belief.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo Bounds; two sons, Roger Bounds and Denny Bounds; four sisters; a brother; and a granddaughter.

Survivors include seven sons, Charles Bounds, Marthasville, Mo., Tommy Bounds, San Antonio, Grady Bounds, Randall Bounds and Berell Bounds, all of Pocahontas, Larry Bounds, Delaplaine, and Gary Bounds, Peach Orchard; a daughter, Sue Malin, Judsonia; three sisters, Opal Coleman, Lake Station, Ind., Nellie Frazier, Alpena, and Virginia Wynn, Rockford, Ill.; two brothers, Billy Shoe, Paragould, and Marva Shoe, Pocahontas; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral is today at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Cox-Waymon Funeral Home at Pocahontas with William Richmond officiating.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis or to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock.

Joseph T. "Joe" Coker
Joseph T. "Joe" Coker, 57, of Walnut Ridge, died Dec. 7, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was a former Walnut Ridge fire chief.

Arrangements will be announced by House-Gregg Funeral Home.

Sharey Ann Fry Darby
Sharey Ann Fry Darby, 61, of Granite City, Ill., died Nov. 30, 2004, at her home.

She was born June 19, 1943, in Walnut Ridge.

She was preceded in death by her father, Rufus Fry; and a brother, Jerry Dale Fry.

Survivors include her husband, Henry C. Darby, Collinsville, Ill.; a daughter, Dena Hoelter, Granite City; her mother, Ruby Fry; a brother, Joe Fry, Egypt; a sister, Joyce Sheridan, Collinsville, Ill.; and three grandchildren, Rodi Littlefield, Monica Hoelter and Nicholas Hoelter.

A memorial service was held Saturday at Irwin Chapel in Granite City.

Memorials may be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Lessie Lee Daughhetee
Lessie Lee Daughhetee, 101, of Pocahontas, mother of Jerry Daughhetee of Walnut Ridge, died Dec. 3, 2004, at Randolph County Nursing Home. Burial was Tuesday in Gross cemetery near Attica under the direction of Cox-Waymon Funeral Home of Pocahontas.

Garry H. Edwards
Garry H. Edwards, 60, of Pocahontas, died Dec. 2, 2004, at Randolph County Medical Center.

Born in Flatwoods, Mo., he was the owner and manager of Poor Boys Flea Market.

He was preceded in death by his father, Noel Edwards.

Survivors include his wife, Lula Fay Edwards; two daughters, Dena White and Dana Bennett, both of Nashville, Tenn.; his mother, Pearl Mitchell Edwards, Poplar Bluff, Mo.; and a brother, Larry N. Edwards, Corning.

The body was cremated under the direction of McNabb Funeral Home of Pocahontas.

A memorial service was held Sunday at 11 a.m. at Pocahontas Missionary Baptist Church.
