Nadine F. Allen

Nadine Frances Gossett Allen, 79, of Jacksonville died Friday, July 28, 2006. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harlis Lee Gossett, sons James Lee Stricklin, Steve Edward Gossett, and Harlis Ray Gossett, parents, two brothers, and one sister.

She is survived by her daughters, Virginia Gossett of Jacksonville, Patricia Withem and husband Jim of Bauxite, and Linda Ann Hall of Sherwood; 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Monday, July 31, at Cato cemetery.

Arrangements were by Roller Owens Funeral Home.

Thell Barber

Thell Barber, 77, of Mena died Sunday, July 23, 2006. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, a machinist, and a member of the Dallas Avenue Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian, son Randy Barber, parents, and three brothers.

He is survived by his son, Mike Barber of Mena; daughter Teresa Smith and husband Rickey of Sherwood; sisters Barb Eads of Jacksonville, and Aline Standridge of Antioch, Calif.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 26, in Mena.

Kenneth ‘Bo’ Hebert

Kenneth “Bo” Hebert, 82, of Little Rock died Monday, July 31, 2006. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and Arkansas Air National Guard, was employed with Rector Phillips Morse Real Estate, and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Little Rock.

He was preceded in death by his son, John Michael Hebert, parents Joseph and Cora Wilma (Bowman) Hebert, and brother Joseph L. Hebert Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Louise; daughter Karen Thompson and husband Eddie of Little Rock; sisters Margaret Jones and husband Walter of Springdale, and Betty Maness and husband Ben of North Little Rock; sister-in-law Nellie Jo Hebert of Sherwood; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 2, in the chapel of Griffin Leggett Healey and Roth in Little Rock. Burial followed at Forest Hills Memorial Park.

The family requests that memorials be made to Arkansas, the Humane Society of Pulaski County, or Westminster Presbyterian.

Bettye Cohen

Bettye Sullivan Cohen, 90, of North Little Rock died Monday, July 31, 2006. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Little Rock.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jay Daniel Rogers, and sister Imabelle Minear.

She is survived by daughter Bettye Rogers and husband Jim of Sherwood; sister Clyde Steubing of Luling, Texas; grandson Alan Rogers and wife Miki of Sherwood; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will have a private service.

The family requests that memorials be made to a charity of the giver’s choice.

Arrangements were by Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home.

Caroline Heckathorne

Caroline Eubanks Heckathorne, 75, of Sherwood died July 12, 2006. She graduated from North Little Rock High School in 1949 and worked for Hughes Aircraft and later North American Aviation.

She is survived by her children, Paul Heckathorne of Sherwood, Theresa Heckathorne of Berkeley, Calif., Elena Heckathorne Dimock and husband Colin of Los Angeles, Calif., and Alicia Heckathorne of Dassel, Minn.; sister O’Neal Hindman of Sherwood; brothers Henry Forster of Texas, and Tom Eubanks and wife Donnie of Sherwood; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 5, at Gravel Ridge cemetery in north Pulaski County.

The family requests that memorials be made to Heifer Project International.

Ollie T. Calvert

Ollie T. Calvert, 64, of Sherwood died Friday, July 28, 2006. He retired after 30 years with the Levi Strauss Co.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

He is survived by his wife, Janie (Anhalt) Calvert of Sherwood; daughters Terri Beeckman and husband Eric of Jackson, Tenn., and Vicki Crosland and husband Rocky of El Paso; sons Charley Calvert of Little Rock, Jonathan Calvert and wife Tonya, and Thomas Calvert, all of Columbus, Ga.; and 10 grandchildren.

A vigil service was held Sunday, July 30, at North Little Rock Funeral Home. A mass of Christian burial was held Monday, July 31, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and burial was in Arkansas State Veterans cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be made to Immaculate Conception Building Fund or the American Cancer.

Clinton Smith

Clinton “Popeye” Smith, 74, of Cabot died Saturday, July 29, 2006. He served 24 years in the military, mostly in the Army Security Agency, retiring as a sergeant first class, taught Junior ROTC, and was member of First Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Renee Smith, parents Melvin Henry Smith and Jimmie Velma (Brown) Smith, and two brothers.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia Rhea Smith; sons Clinton Stewart Smith Jr. and wife Margaret of Oklahoma, and Douglas Henry Melvin Smith of Fayetteville; daughters Melissa Ann Hampton and husband Dr. John III of Little Rock, and Diana Rhea Fitzgerald of Cabot; sisters Wilma Lee Brimer of Mabelvale, Annie Bell Gicante of Little Rock, Meveline Schooley of Nashville, and Vilma Josephine Allred of Pine Bluff; brothers Herman Lee Smith of Cabot, John Lee Smith of Sherwood, and Jimmie Lauren Smith of White Hall; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Chapel in North Little Rock.

The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.

Juanita Bradley

Juanita “Neet Neet” Bradley, heaven’s newest angel, passed Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006, at her home in Sherwood, Ark. Born Feb. 9, 1935, to Clyde “Jigger” Bradley and Mable Peebles Bradley of Augusta, Ark., and raised by her grandparents Will and Mattie Peebles.

Her parents, grandparents, sister Martha Earle and her beloved Joe Williams preceded Juanita in death.

Juanita leaves behind the love of her life, and lifetime friend, Donya Thompson; stepson Dale Williams and his three children, Joe, Dale, and Kaitlyn; her three dogs and cats; and a host of friends who loved her greatly.

Juanita worked for the Silver Dollar Bar, Presbyterian Village Nursing Home, and West Lake Nursing Home. She enjoyed caring for others, spending time with friends, her pets and reading.

Juanita and Donya would like to thank the special caring angels of Baptist Home Health who took care of her the last years of her life.

Memorial services for Juanita will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at Open Door Community Church, 709 West Lee Ave., in Sherwood. Directly following the memorial there will be a gathering for those who wish to attend at Juanita’s and Donya’s home in Sherwood.

Nellie E. Ellis

Nellie Elizabeth Ellis, 95, of Sherwood died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter L. Ellis, parents James P. Kleinegger and Dora McNeill, four brothers, and three sisters.

She is survived by her son, David Ellis and wife Judy of North Little Rock; daughter Linda Baugh of Sherwood; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 19, at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Chapel in North Little Rock.

The family requests that memorials be made to Arkansas Hospice in Little Rock.
Arrangements were by Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home.

E. McCarney-Nickson

Earnestine McCarney-Nickson, 70, of Sherwood, a former resident of Pine Bluff, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2006. She was a member of Mount Nebo Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star Electra Chapter 7.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn Jean Williams, parents Alfred and Susan Thomas McCarney Sr. and brothers Edward “Freeman” and LeJel McCraney.

She is survived by her sisters, Lorett Rudley and husband Josh, Romie Terry and husband William of Little Rock, Frances Marshall and husband Pator Landrum Marshall Jr. of Sherwood, and Rita Nesby of Pine Bluff; brothers Alfred Thomas McCraney Jr. and wife Shirley of Roland, and Verdel McCraney of Los Angeles; two grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 19, at Mount Nebo Baptist Church. Burial was in the Henson cemetery.

Arrangements were by Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.

William M. Arnold

William “Mike” Arnold, 57, of Sherwood died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2006. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged, was a retired North Little Rock Police officer and a member of North Jacksonville Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife Helen of Sherwood; son Tim of North Little Rock; daughter Serena of Sherwood; two brothers, three sisters, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 19, at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home in North Little Rock. Interment followed at Rest Hills Memorial Park.

Homer Smith

Homer “Spot” Smith, 89, of Conway died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006. He was a member of the Old Liberty Baptist Church and had worked as a heavy equipment operator.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Joyce, parents Walter Hamilton and Minnie Belk Smith, seven brothers and sisters, and a grandson.

He is survived by his children, Virginia Whitfield and husband Howard of Sherwood, Homer Lynn Smith and wife Linda of Black Oak, and Jackie Lee Smith and wife Barbara of North Little Rock; two sisters; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Alma Jean Simmons.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the Old Liberty Baptist Church. Burial was in New Liberty cemetery.

Arrangements were by Roller McNutt Funeral Home of Conway.

Berniece Nichoalds

Berniece Nichoalds, 87, of Lonoke died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006. She was a retired seamstress from Tuff Nut Garment Factory and a member of Sherwood Baptist Church.

She is survived by her sons, George of Clayton, N.C., David of Lonoke, and Ronald Nichoalds of North Little Rock; daughter Rebecca Sanders of Midlothian, Texas; sister Hazel Smith of Mena, formerly of Sherwood; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at Pinecrest Memorial Park.

Ada Boone Bray

Ada Boone Bray, 93, of Little Rock died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006. She was a secretary at the Cathedral of St. Andrew from 1958 to 1989, was honored by Pope John Paul II with the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice award, and served as a volunteer for many years with St. Vincent’s Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Carson Bray, parents William and Ada (Pollock) Boone, brother William Boone, and sister Melanie Boone Crawford.
She is survived by her daughters, Carroll Deller of Sherwood and Mary Simmons of Little Rock; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

A rosary was said Wednesday, Aug. 23, in the chapel of Griffin Leggett Healey and Roth in Little Rock. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 24, at the Cathedral of St. Andrew with Msgr. Scott L. Marczuk officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be made to Cathedral of St. Andrew Restoration Fund.
