William Jay Walker

William Jay Walker of Little Rock, 82, died recently.

He was a World War II veteran. He served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga in the Navy Supply Corps as paymaster. After his tour of duty ended, he remained in the Navy Reserve and was called back for active duty during the Korean War. He later retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. Bill worked as a claim adjuster with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in Dallas, which transferred him to Little Rock, in 1945 where he has since lived. After the war he worked for Little Rock Furniture Company.

He was a member of the Pulaski County, Arkansas and American Bar Associations, and licensed to practice before the United States Court of Military Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. He was a member of Arkansas Consistory Western Star #2 F&AM, 32 Degree Mason and Scimitar Shrine Temple.

Survived by wife, June Walker; son, Tommy Walker, Little Rock; daughter, Carol Ann Shull, Franklin, Tenn.; stepchildren, Terry Dillon, Jacksonville, Sandra Dillon, Little Rock; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were July 3, 2004, in the Chapel of Griffin Leggett Healey and Roth, Little Rock, with burial at Forest Hills Memorial Park.

Dorothy M. Swift

Dorothy Montgomery Swift, 79, of North Little Rock, died July 2, 2004.
She was the widow of Arvel E. Swift. She was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God and a member of Woodmen of the World Lodge #5 in North Little Rock.

Survivors are one son, Eddie Swift of North Little Rock; one daughter, Nancy Garner of Sherwood; five grandchildren; two sisters, June Roberts of California and Eva Palmer of North Little Rock.

Funeral was Tuesday at Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in North Little Rock. Burial was in Rest Hills Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to American Heart Association, 909 West 2nd, Little Rock, Ark., 72201.

Loreta Fewell

Loreta Faye Fewell, 68, of North Little Rock died June 26, 2004.
Survivors: husband, Bill; sons, Billy and Bobby; daughter, Tresa; four grandchildren; sister, Ruth Watson of Pine Bluff; brother, Jack Harper of Miss.; adopted sons, Fuzzy Byrd of Cabot and Mike Munn.

A memorial service was held at Park View Baptist Church, North Little Rock, with Huson Funeral Home of Sherwood in charge of arrangements.

Barbara L. Morgan

Barbara Lynn Morgan, age 48, of Sherwood died Wednesday, June 30, 2004.
She was a teacher with Pulaski County Special School District and a published author.
She is survived by her husband, John Morgan; her mother, Louise Knight of Warren; two sons, Randy Kelley of Star City, and Shane Kelley of Hot Springs; sister, Wanda Eason of Monticello; and a granddaughter.
Graveside services were July 6, at Edgewood Memorial Park in North Little Rock, under the direction of Roller-Owens Funeral.

Patricia D. Tyler

Patricia Dianne Dancy Tyler, 72, of North Little Rock died Tuesday, June 29, 2004. Born on July 14, 1931, she was the youngest daughter of Willa and August H. “Red” Dancy.

Tyler was a registered nurse, and retired after serving 29 years with Baptist Health Medical Center-North Little Rock as the assistant vice president for nursing. She was a graduate of the Baptist School of Nursing, University of Central Arkansas, and Webster University.

Tyler was a member of Levy Baptist Church where she served as the church clerk and sang in the choir.

Tyler was preceded in death three weeks earlier by her husband of 52 years, J.W. “Purr” Tyler. She is survived by two brothers, Sam Sage of Peoria, Ariz., and Jim Dancy of North Little Rock; and a sister, Fyannetta Brown of Little Rock; four daughters, Lynda Quick of Hamburg, Sandy Carpenter of Maumelle, Marilyn Scott of Sherwood, and C.J. Newton of Greenbrier; 11 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were July 2, 2004 at Levy Baptist Church in North Little Rock, with Reverend Steven Tiner officiating. Internment was at Edgewood Memorial Park. Pallbearers were sons-in-law and grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the music department of Levy Baptist Church, 3501 Pike Avenue, North Little Rock, AR 72118.

Bonnie A. Langle

Bonnie Aileen Langle, 63, of Viola, died July 16, 2004.
She was a nurse’s aide for 20 years.

Survivors are: husband, Carl Langle, Viola; sons, Russell Langle, Batesville, and Jeff Eckberg, Denver, Colo.; daughters, Debbie Talburt Henderson, and Cheryl Ferguson of Sherwood; brother, Dr. John Buehler, Reno, Nev.; and seven grandchildren.

Services: Tuesday, July 20, Barker Funeral Home Chapel, Salem, with interment in Liberty cemetery, Viola, under direction of Barker Funeral Home.
Memorials: American Cancer Society or Calico Rock Hospice.

Troy F. Moffett

Troy Franklin Moffett, 84 of Little Rock, died Sunday, July 18, 2004.
He was former owner of Twin City Glass and Upholstery in North Little Rock and was a member of Windsong Church of Christ in Little Rock.

He is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Barnard of Sherwood; a son, Kenneth Moffett of Little Rock; three grandchildren; two sisters, Violet Gray of Pine Bluff and Louvella Hill of Conway; and a brother, Loyd Moffitt of Quitman.

Graveside services were Wednesday at Copperas Springs cemetery in Guy with Roller-McNutt Funeral Home, Conway, in charge.

Dora Etta Martin

Dora Etta Martin, age 94, of Hazen died Sunday, July 18, 2004.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, Royal Neighbors, Hazen Garden Club, Home Demonstration Club and the Calvary Baptist Church.

She is survived by five children: sons - Preston T. “Buddy” Foster of Roswell, N.M., Joe Dorris and Mattie Foster of Sherwood, and Curtis Lynn Martin of Hazen; daughters - Rachel Corrine Foster Perrine of Lonoke and Linda Darnell Foster Loudermilk of Hazen; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Graveside services were July 21, at the Hazen cemetery.

Pauline Lilyan Poe

Pauline Lilyan Poe, 89, of Sherwood, died on July 17, 2004.
Pauline was a graduate of the University of Arkansas with a master’s in education. She was a past president of the Little Rock Women’s City Club and a member of other women’s auxiliaries. A long time member of First United Methodist Church of Little Rock, Pauline was active in the Women’s Methodist Union.

A gathering of friends and family was held in her honor Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at Griffin-Leggett-Rest Hills Funeral Home, North Little Rock.

A celebration of her life was held Thursday, July 22, 2004 at the funeral home with Reverend Michael L. Mattox officiating. Interment followed at Rest Hills Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Little Rock, 723 Center St., Little Rock, AR 72201, (501) 372-2256.

Billy Glen Henning

Billy Glen Henning, 64, of North Little Rock, died July 18, 2004. He was a United States Marine veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda; a son, Keith Henning of North Little Rock; a daughter, Alisa Henning of Albuquerque, N.M.; three sisters, Barbara Garey and Joyce Mahoney, both of North Little Rock and Patricia Boskey of Millington, Tenn.; two brothers, Jimmy Young of Sherwood and Walter Henning, Jr.; his mother, Maudie May Henning of Sherwood; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were Thursday at Huson Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Arkansas State Veteran’s cemetery.

Memorials may be made to National League of Families of American Prisoners and Missing, 1005 North Glebe Rd., Suite 170, Arlington, Va. 22201.

Anita Louise Straw

Anita Louise Robinson Straw, 46, of Houston, Texas, died July 17, 2004.
She is survived by her husband, Earnest Straw, Houston, Texas; sons, Jamell Denham of Houston, Texas; Earnest Straw Jr., Dallas, Texas; three daughters, Mia Denham, Melody Straw, Houston, Texas, June Straw, Little Rock; six grandchildren; parents, Rev. Ray and Edna Robinson, Little Rock; brothers, Ray Robinson, Denver, Colo., Gary Robinson, Sherwood, Glen Robinson, Denver, Colo., William Eubanks, San Antonio, Texas; sisters, Angelia Rodgers, Rockford, Ill., Lesli Robinson and Mirian Bernard, Little Rock.

Family hour will be Friday, July 23, 2004, at Ruffin & Jarrett Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Saturday, Jyuly 24, at 11 a.m., St. Mark Baptist Church, 5722 W. 12th St., Little Rock.

Jack E. Freshour

Jack E. Freshour, 65, of North Little Rock, owner of Freshour Construction Co. in Cabot, died Monday, July 19, 2004. He attended the University of Arkansas and was a member of SAE fraternity.

Jack served as president of the Arkansas Chapter, Associated General Contractors of America, Inc., in 1984. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Arkansas Chapter AGC. He continuously served on the Board of Directors from 1987 and was a member of the AGC Highway Committee, Highway Specification Committee and the Legislative Committee.
He was a member of the SASHTO Joint Committee, and a member of the National AGC Board of Directors from March 1987 and reached Lifetime Director status in March 1999. He was recognized and commended at the 2004 AGC of America National Convention in Orlando, Fla., for being a 25-year contributor to the AGC of America Political Action Committee. He was the founding treasurer of UALR-University History Institute.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy Freshour; two daughters, Michele Teske and Nicole Green; son, Jack Freshour, all of Gallatin, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to UALR-University History Institute or Pulaski County Humane Society.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at North Little Rock Funeral Home Chapel.

Robert J. McCleland

Robert J. “Bobby” McCleland, 38, of Ft. Hood, Texas, died July 11, 2004.
He was serving in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Dana McCleland of Ft. Hood, Texas; stepsons, Tony and Tyler; father and stepmother, Don and Rose McCleland Sr. of Little Rock; three brothers, James Don McCleland of Little Rock, Don McCleland Jr. of Gravel Ridge and Ricky Lynn McCleland of Cummins, Ga.; two sisters, Ermae Aud of Hensley, and Christy Faulkner of North Little Rock.

Funeral services were Monday at Huson Funeral Home, Sherwood, with burial in Arkansas State Veterans cemetery in North Little Rock with full military honors.

Jimmie E. Armstrong

Jimmie E. Armstrong, 71, of Jacksonville died July 26, 2004.

He was retired from Ford Motor Company. He was a member of the Marion Street Church of Christ.

Survivors are his wife, Maxine Armstrong of Jacksonville; sons, Michael Armstrong of Long Beach, Calif., and DeShaun Johnson of Biloxi, Miss.; daughters, JoAnn Johnson of Long Beach, Calif., Treasure Ann Ortega of Paramont, Calif., Lisa Bell of Norwalk, Calif., Candice Moore of Mesa, Ariz., Yvetta Armstrong of Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, Joseph Armstrong Jr. of Detroit, Mich.; sisters, Louise Armstrong of Sherwood, Colleen Brown of Jacksonville, Dottie Robinson of Los Angeles, Calif., Goldean Drisdom of Los Angeles, Calif.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral was July 31 at the Marche Church of Christ, with burial in Arkansas State Veterans cemetery by Larry G. Acklin Funeral Home of Conway in charge.

Charles Johnson

Charles “Britt’’ Johnson, 22, of Bryant died Tuesday, July 27, 2004.
Survivors include his parents, Sam and Bonita Johnson of Bryant; a brother, Scott Johnson of Plymouth, N.C.; a sister, Rachel Johnson of Bryant; paternal grandparents, Howard and Bonnie of Dumas.

Memorial services were July 31 at Ashby Funeral Home. Burial was in Forest Hills cemetery.

John W. Phillips

USN (Ret.) Master Chief Petty Officer John Wayne Phillips, 59, died July 22, 2004, in San Diego, Calif.

He is survived by his wife, Sumiko Phillips; son, Thomas Wayne Phillips; daughter, Connie Lea Phillips; one grandson, all of San Diego, Calif.; mother, Clara R. Phillips of Bryant; two brothers, Harold Phillips, Benton, and Robert Phillips, Gastonia, N.C.; and three sisters, Ruby Garmon, Sherwood, Margaret Strohsahl, Little Rock, and Gradye LeVine, Cabot.

Funeral with full military honors was July 29, at El Camino Memorial Sorrento Valley Chapel with interment at Ft. Rosecrans National cemetery, San Diego, Calif.

Virginia Castleberry

Virginia Umsted Castleberry, 88, of Little Rock, formerly of Newport, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004.

She was a retired English teacher and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newport.

She is survived by one son, Milton A. Umsted of Sherwood; two daughters, Betty Umsted Young and Jamie Umsted Castleberry, both of Sherwood; and six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with interment in Walnut Grove cemetery. Arrangements by Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home.

Bernice H. Holbrook

Bernice Hazel Burgin Holbrook, age 83, of North Little Rock died Aug. 2, 2004.

She was a member of the Grace Church of the Nazarene in North Little Rock.
Survivors include her two sons - Jerry Holbrook of Mayflower and Ron Holbrook of Sherwood; a granddaughter; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Aug. 5, at the funeral home with interment at Cato cemetery.
