O.B. Guffey

O. B. “Gus” Guffey, age 77, of Searcy died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002.

He was a member of Downtown Church of Christ, a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, and the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Medal of Honor, Purple Heart, and Victory Ribbon. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Retired Firefighters Association, and a business owner. He is survived by his wife, Ann Guffey of Searcy; Timothy Vaughn Guffey, son, of Little Rock; Ginann Swindle, daughter, of Sherwood; and two grandchildren.

Service was Tuesday at Roller-Daniel Chapel. Interment was in White County Memorial Gardens by Roller-Daniel.

Donna L. Jackson

Donna L. Jackson, 55, of Jacksonville, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002.

Survivors include her parents, Curtis Snow of Washington State and Myrtle Casey of Florida; sons, Ron Portwine and Robert Jackson, both of Sherwood; daughters, Brooke Jackson and Robyn Jackson; brothers, Ron Snow of New Mexico and Mike Casey of Arkadelphia; sisters, Candy Spains of Alaska and Marty Potter of Little Rock; five grandchildren.

Services were Thur., Sept. 19, in the chapel of Moore’s Funeral Home followed by interment in Rest Hills Memorial Park in NLR.

Mildred Lewis

Mildred France Threet Lewis died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002.

She is survived by her husband, Cassell Jerome Lewis; three sons, Glenn of Charlestown, Md., Fred of Virginia Beach, Va., and Michael Lewis of Sherwood; two daughters, Anita Susan Blueford of Battle Creek, Mich., and Elizabeth Adkins of North Little Rock; three brothers, Marion, Valda and Willie Threet, all of Little Rock; two sisters, Dorean Newsum and Mary Freeman, both of Little Rock; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Funeral was Friday, Sept. 6, Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, Little Rock.

Interment Monday, Sept. 9, Arkansas State Veterans cemetery, North Little Rock, Ark. Ruffin-Jarrett in charge.

Chesley White Sr.

Chesley Leon White Sr., age 73, of Sherwood died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002.

He was a member of the 28th Air Division at Hamilton Air Force Base, Calif.

He worked 32 years for Trans-Texas, Texas International and Continental Airlines, serving as station manager in Little Rock most of those years.

After retiring from the airlines, he went into private business with his son, Scott White.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara Ann White of Sherwood; daughter, Cynthia White Dennie of North Little Rock; sons, Leon White Jr. of Cabot, Scott White of North Little Rock; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service was held Sept. 6 at the Sylvan Hills Church of Christ in Sherwood. Graveside service with military honors followed at Arkansas State Veterans cemetery in North Little Rock. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, or the American Diabetes Association.

Eskel Wayne Byrd

Eskel Wayne Byrd, 73, of Morrilton, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002.

He owned and operated Midsouth Microfilm Service, Inc., for 37 years, retiring in 1991.

He was a deacon and member of First Baptist Church of Mayflower. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mary Lou Byrd of Morrilton; one son, Gary Wayne Byrd of Mayflower; one daughter, Sherrie Gentry of Morrilton; two sisters, Audrey Whaley of Sherwood, and Opal McCartney of Wynne; two grandchildren.

Funeral service was Sept. 10, at Mayflower First Baptist Church with burial in Mayflower cemetery. Roller-McNutt Funeral Home, Conway, was in charge.

Eileen Beeler

Eileen Beeler, 77, of Sherwood died Sept. 5, 2002. She was a member of Salem UMC.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Stan Beeler; a daughter, Peggy Burns of Lake Geneva, Wis.; a son, Wayne Beeler of North Little Rock; brothers, Jim and Joel Clark, both of Benton; and two grandchildren.

Steve Burt

Steve Burt, 48, of Mabelvale, died Aug. 27, 2002.

Survivors include: one daughter, Lisa Polk of Benton; two sons, Rhett Burt of Heber Springs and Daniel Burt of Cabot; two brothers, David Price of Sherwood and Buddy Hinshaw of Mabelvale; and one sister, Shara Sievers of Bauxite.

Graveside services were Friday at Arkansas Memorial Gardens. North Little Rock Funeral Home was in charge.

John K. McFarlin

John Keith McFarlin, age 40, of Little Rock, died Aug. 27, 2002.

He worked for many years in the telecommunication field as a site acquisition representative. He was a commercial real estate broker, and a member of St. James United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his children, Reed and Emily McFarlin of Sherwood; mother and step-father, Jo Klair and John Strong of Little Rock; father, Patrick McFarlin of Santa Fe, New Mexico; brother, Michael McFarlin of Amarillo, Texas; and sister, Janelle Strong of Little Rock.

A graveside service was held at Mt. Holly cemetery with arrangements by Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth Custom Funerals & Cremations.

Joyce A. McCarty

Joyce A. McCarty, age 77, of Sherwood died Sept. 1, 2002.

She was a retired bookkeeper and secretary for Northeast Diesel.

She is survived by two children, Nancy Andrecht of Newburgh, Ind., and John Patrick McCarty of St. Louis, Mo.; a sister; two brothers; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will at 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Roller Owens Funeral Home with interment in Rest Hills Memorial Park.

Manuella Gomez

Manuella Gomez, 75, of Sherwood died Sept. 1, 2002.
She is survived by eight children.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Westlawn-Hillcrest Memorial Park in Omaha, Neb. Local arrangements by North Little Rock Funeral Home.

Alberta Hammond

Alberta Lucille Hammond, 85, of Benton, retired from Westinghouse and former employee of Arkansas Highway Department, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002.

She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Benton.
She is survived by three sons, Dave Hagan of Susanville, California, Albert J. Hagan of Brookshire, Texas, and Charles Hagan of Memphis, Tenn., a stepdaughter, Shirley Fluharty of Sherwood, eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Friday, Aug. 30, 2002 in the Chapel of Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth Custom Funerals & Cremations, with interment in Pinecrest cemetery.

Ethel McWhorter

Ethel Hammon McWhorter, 99, of Lonoke died Aug. 26, 2002.

She was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, William Hammon of Mountain View; stepsons, James and Jack McWhorter, both of Benton; a daughter, Abbie Asbille of Lonoke; six stepdaughters, Viola Layfield, Imogene McDade and Genive Mitchell, all of Benton, Juanita Graham of Carlisle, Gladys Hardin of Jacksonville and Ann Pryor of Sherwood; a sister, Mabel Holmes of Memphis; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

Haskell ‘Hack’ Garvin

Haskell “Hack Garvin, of North Little Rock, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003. He was a retired North Little Rock fireman, a mason, an avid fisherman and hunter, and a member of First Assembly of God Church.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Gladys B. Garvin, of North Little Rock; a son, Harold Garvin of Sherwood; a daughter, Barbara Slavens, of Evanston, Wyo.; one sister, Grace Liedtke, of Orlando, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Tuesday, Feb. 18 at North Little Rock Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Sumner cemetery.

Mildred Robertson

Mildred Katherine Mitchell Robertson, 79, of Sherwood, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003. She was employed by Timex Corporation, and later, Texas Eastern Corporation.

Survivors include her husband, James Cecil Robertson; one son, John Orville Robertson; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two brothers, Darrell Mitchell and Jack Mitchell; and one sister, Dorothy Greenwade.

Funeral was at 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 21, at Griffin-Leggett-Rest Hills Chapel at 7724 Landers Rd., in North Little Rock. Interment followed in Rest Hills Memorial Park. Visitation was two hours prior to the funeral.

Franklin Hargrove

Franklin Elden Hargrove, 86, of Sherwood, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003. He was a B-17 tail gunner during World War II, and a member of the Lodge 422 in Wills Point, Texas, for 40 years. He was a Baptist.

Funeral was Saturday, Feb. 22, at Griffin-Leggett Rest Hills Chapel in North Little Rock with interment at Rest Hills Memorial Park.

Rev. Martin L. White

Rev. Martin Lloyd White, 91, of Little Rock, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003. He was a retired carpenter and an Assemblies of God minister.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Beth Vaughan of Sherwood; sons, Bobby White of Conway, Paul White, Lowell White and Jerry White all of Little Rock; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Hollis White of Comfort, Texas and Sam White of Sholow, Ariz.; and a sister, Edith Bolton of Peoria, Ariz.

Funeral service was Tuesday, Feb. 225, 2003, at Roller-Drummond Southwest Chapel. Interment was at Salem cemetery.

Shirley A. L. Owens

Shirley Ann Lasiter Owens, age 56, of Sherwood, died Feb. 22, 2003. She was a member of Cornerstone Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include her son, Tommy L. Hobson of Jasper, Ala.; mother, Velma Lasiter of Sherwood; brothers, Bernie Lasiter of Little Rock and Dennis Lasiter of San Francisco, Calif.; and a granddaughter.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home with interment in Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Memorial Park.

Mildred Cleo Welsh

Mildred Cleo Welsh, 91, of North Little Rock, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003. She was of the Pentecostal faith and enjoyed sewing and quilting.

She is survived by two sons, Don Welsh of Maumelle, Larry Welsh of Sherwood; 16 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren .

Memorials may be made to Vision 2000, St. Patrick’s School Endowment Fund. Funeral services were Saturday at North Little Rock Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Arkansas Memorial Gardens.

Alice Rawe

Alice Rawe, 93, of El Paso, Arkansas, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2003 at her home.

She was born May 3, 1909, the daughter of Charlie and Ethel Dennis Evans. She is preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Joe Rawe.

She is survived by three sons, John Rawe of El Paso, AR, Charles A. Rawe of El Paso, AR and Sam Rawe of Cabot, AR; four daughters, Ethel Loyer of Virginia Beach, VA, Nellie Cleveland of Sherwood, AR, Alice McKenzie of Arizona City, AZ and Mable Alexander of BelAir Beach, FL; two sisters, Katherine Dixon of Greenwood, AR and Myrtle Harris of Michigan; one brother, Arthur Evans of Jacksonville, AR.

She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Wednesday, February 19 at the Cabot Funeral Chapel.
Friends visited on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice, Searcy, AR. Arrangements by Cabot Funeral Home, 501-843-5816.
