Lyda Holt Samuel

Lyda Holt Samuel, born August 24, 1947 to J. Frank and Mary Holt, departed this earth on July 16, 2004, to join her parents. She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Tom, her two sons, Christopher and Andrew, her sister and brother-in- law, Melissa and Tom Vandiver, and their children, Ben and Kate.

After graduation from Hall High School and Southern Methodist University, she worked for Representative Wilbur Mills in Washington, D.C. Along with her involvement in many civic and community organizations, she also served the city as a member of the Little Rock Airport Commission. As a co-owner of the Clothes Horse, and co-founder and owner of Et Cetera, she was known for her creative vision, generous heart and boundless energy. She was recognized professionally, both locally and nationally, for her unique entrepreneurial talents that were reflected at Et Cetera.

Lyda was a beautiful person, in countenance and especially in spirit, who found joy in music, art, people and dogs. She felt her greatest accomplishment was the creation of a home that was filled with love. Her greatest joy on this earth was her family, and with a mother's heart her two sons, whom she believed were her special gifts from God.

Memorials may be made to the J. Frank Holt Educational Scholarship Fund at the Arkansas Bar Association, 400 West Markham, Little Rock, AR 72201, or to the Humane Society of Pulaski County. Visitation will be Monday, July 19th, 5-7 p.m. at Ruebel Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, July 20th, 9:30 a.m. at Roselawn cemetery.

The Samuel family asks for your prayers in the days ahead, as they seek comfort and give thanks for Lyda's life.

Bernice Fedder Sanders

Bernice Fedder Sanders, 90, of Little Rock, died July 30, 2004. She was born April 11, 1914, in Alexandria, VA, to the late Harry and Jenny Fedder. She was preceded in death by her brother, Stanley Fedder.

Mrs. Sanders was a long- time member of Temple B'Nai Israel and a Past President of the Temple Sisterhood. During the integration crisis of 1957, Mrs. Sanders served as the Historian of the Women's Emergency Committee and later was a member of STOP (Stop This Outrageous Purge). In addition, she was the Past President of the Little Rock PTA, a past member of the MEMS Board, a former Pulaski County Justice of the Peace, and a past President of St. Vincent's Auxillary.

Mrs. Sanders is survived by her husband of 56 years, Arthur O. Sanders, and her daughter, Sue Sanders Maddison and her husband Keith, her sister-in-law, Sue Fedder, and nephews Kirk and Scott Fedder.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 2, 2004 at Temple B'Nai Israel with Rabbi Eugene Levy officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Temple B'Nai Israel, 3700 North Rodney Parham, Little Rock, AR 72212 or The Arkansas Hospice, 5600 West 12th Street, Little Rock, AR 72204.

Dr. Walter George Selakovich

Walter George Selakovich, 80, of Little Rock, passed away on August 18, 2004 at St. Vincent Infirmary after a short illness. His family will remember him as a loving father and "papa" and his peers will remember him as a caring and respected physician.

He was born on March 25, 1924, in Quealy, Wyoming to Martha and George Selakovich. He graduated from high school in Great Falls, Montana. He attended the University of Notre Dame from 1942 to 1944 and then was called to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II (He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War). After the war, he attended Northwestern University where he received his M.D. Post-graduate training included: an internship at Evanston Hospital, an Orthopedic Residency at Hines V.A. Hospital and Honolulu Shriners Hospital, and a Fellowship at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans. In 1959, he became a board certified Orthopedic Surgeon. From 1958, his academic appointments included: Clinical Instructor of Orthopedic Surgery, Associate Clinical Professor, and Clinical Professor at The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (U.A.M.S.) and The V.A. Hospital. In addition to his own private practice from 1957-1994, he served as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery for St. Vincent Infirmary and Arkansas Children's Hospital. He received many honors and recognitions including: Examiner for The American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, The Walter G. Selakovich, M.D. Faculty Teaching Award (U.A.M.S.), and Distinguished Service Award (U.A.M.S.). He was a member and president of several Orthopedic Societies and published and presented many Orthopedic papers. During his professional career, he trained well over 100 Orthopedic residents.

He was a charter member of Christ The King Catholic Church. As a long time member of Pleasant Valley Country Club, he loved playing golf-rain or shine.

He is preceded in death by his parents Martha and George Selakovich and one son, Kevin Nolan Selakovich. Survivors include: His wife of 57 years, Kathleen Nolan Selakovich, one sister, Helen Michelotti, five sons; Walter Jr. and his wife Tina, Thomas and his wife Margaret, Richard and his wife Dale, Steve and his wife Stacy, Patrick and his wife Kristina, three daughters; Martha Heard and her husband Mark, Erin Davis and her husband Ben and Anne Sanders and her husband Clay. In addition to his children, he is also survived by twenty-three loving grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Christ The King Church on Friday, August 20th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary service. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 21st at 10:00 am at Christ the King Church. A private Graveside service will follow at Calvary cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Walter G. Selakovich Orthopedic Residency Program, UAMS Orthopedic Surgery 4301, West Markham-slot 531, Little Rock, Ar. 72205 and the Msgr. Hebert Endowment Fund, Christ The King Catholic Church, 4000 North Rodney Parham Road, Little Rock, Ar, 72212.

Christine Goodwin Smith

Christine Goodwin Smith, 94, of North Little Rock, died Friday, July 30, 2004 at Agency Medical Center in Malvern. She was a retired Federal Government Secretary and a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include a daughter, Carollyn Dunn of Cedar Hill, Texas; a son, Robert "Dallas" Smith and wife Lora of North Little Rock; a brother, Chester Goodwin of Maumelle; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday at Greers Chapel cemetery in McNeil. Visitation is 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Ruebel Funeral Home.

Warren Harding Sugg

Warren Harding Sugg, age 82, of Little Rock, died Friday, July 30, 2004. He was born in Little Rock, and graduated from Mabelvale High School. He Joined the Army Air Corp serving during World War II as a radio operator in the North African Theatre. Returning after the war, Mr. Sugg married Eloise Irmen Sugg who died in 2001. He attended Little Rock Junior College, later beginning his 30 year career in Civil Service working with the United States Postal Services. Warren had also received his electrician's licenses. He loved fishing and camping and making birdhouses, constructing many Martin houses for his friends.

He is survived by three sons; Richard Sugg and wife Phyllis of Alexander, Charles Sugg and wife Laura of Kattie, Texas, Michael Sugg of Benton, two daughters Georgette Price and husband Raymond of Alexander, Sandra Gattin and husband Tommy of Alexander, two brothers; William Sugg and wife Marie of Hensley, Arkansas, Donald Sugg of Little Rock, 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

There will a visitation Monday from 5 to 7pm at Ruebel Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at 10am Tuesday at Martin cemetery officiated by Brother Bobby Ashcraft.

Beth Hess Taylor

Beth Hess Taylor passed away at 6:00 Thursday morning at the Woodland Hills Retirement Center. Her son, Mark, was with her and she was well attended by the nursing care staff. She is survived by Mark, his wife Gillian and daughter Rhianna, her son Byron, of Little Rock and his daughters Amanda and Claire and their mother Lynn, son Alan of San Carlos, California, his wife Angela and their children Leo and Elisa and her older sister Dorothy in Washington state.

She was born July 20, 1917 in Oklahoma City and raised there and in Wichita and Fort Scott, Kansas. Her parents were Esther Bertholf and Lee Charles Hess. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Fine Arts, and was an accomplished realistic and impressionistic painter, and sculptor. Her skills in knitting, needlepoint, cross stitch and the range of textile arts produced many, many outstanding works. A true artist, she was touched by natural beauty and helped her sons and others see the world with an artist's eye for color and composition. She rose above the challenges of the infirmities of her later life with courage, strength and dignity and was supported by dear friends Mildred Wilson, Pat Bland and Dan and Carolyn Cashman.

A service for family and close friends will be held Saturday, August 21, at 10:00 am at Second Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers or other memorials, Beth would wish that those who knew and loved her enjoy a piece of new art, or to revisit a piece of art in her memory.

Hunter James and Taylor Scott Winchester

Hunter James and Taylor Scott Winchester, infant sons of Scottie and Jacqueline Winchester of Damascus, died Friday, July 9, 2004. Other survivors are grandparents, Jackie and Meki Terry of Damascus, and Ellen Winchester of Clinton.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at Holland cemetery in Gravesville (Van Buren County). Arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home.

J. Dexter Wright

J. Dexter Wright, 91, of Little Rock, died on Wednesday, July 21, 2004. He was born on December 10, 1912, in Brazoria County, TX, the son of John Dexter Rhodes Wright and Ruth Dinius Wright. He grew up in San Antonio, TX. Mr. Wright was a geophysicist for over 45 years, retiring in 1974. He and Sigrid Wolffs were married on July 20, 1986.

He is survived by his wife, a son, John Wright and wife Cathy of The Woodlands, TX, a daughter Jeannie Wright of San Francisco. CA, a grandson, Rhodes Wright of Houston, TX, a sister, Virginia Morris of San Antonio, TX, and a cousin, Dr. Gisela Spieker of Little Rock. He was predeceased by his first wife, Doris Bergeron Wright, and two sisters.A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Little Rock, AR.

James Allen Wrotny

James Allen Wrotny, 57 of Little Rock died Saturday, July 17, 2004. He was born in Sewickley, PA. He is the son of the late Andrew Rodney Wrotny and is survived by his mother, Irene Zaluski Wrotny of Ambridge, PA. Jim graduated from Ambridge High School where he was a Boy Scout receiving the rank of Star Scout. He joined the U. S. Army, graduating from Officer's Training School as a Second Lieutenant, serving in West Germany for four years. Upon his return to the States he was a carpenter before graduating from Penn State University in State College, PA, in 1973 with a BS degree in forestry and a minor in business. He was a member of Xi Sigma Pi Forestry Fraternity. He began his career with Koppers Industries, a railroad tie manufacturer. He became the western procurement manager, working for the company for the past 32 years. He was an accomplished master woodworker. He also loved fly-fishing, making his own bamboo fly rods and tying his own flies. His first love was his family, and the out doors. He loved the mountains, hunting, and fishing with his family and friends.

He was assistant troop leader of Boy Scout Troop 427 of Immaculate Conception Church in North Little Rock.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Camferdam Wrotny; four sons, Gary Allen Wrotny, of Big Sky, MT, Jonathan Edwin Wrotny of Newport News, VA, Robert Richardson Camferdam and wife Allison of Dominica, West Indies, David Weldon Camferdam, Jr. of Athens, GA; one daughter, Melissa Camferdam Ortega and husband, Mike of Little Rock; one brother, Ron Wrotny and wife Shelly, and two sisters, Phyllis Walls and husband, Harold of Beaver, PA, Andrea Williams and husband Norm of State College, PA.

There will be a vigil from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the church, officiated by Rev. Don White. Burial will follow in Roselawn cemetery. Memorials in lieu of flowers should be made to Habitat for Humanities, 800 S. Scott St. Little Rock, AR 72201. Arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home.

Lloyd Steven Young

Lloyd Steven Young, 50, of Little Rock, died Tuesday, August 3, 2004 in Little Rock. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 30, 1954 a son of Lloyd Young, of Caracas, Venezuela, and Beverly Glover Young of Redmond, Oregon. He attended Parkview High School, and was a graduate of the University of South Florida in Tampa. He was a brilliant nuclear physicist and developed the G - dimensional theory of relativity.

Survivors include his parents; a daughter, Chloe Young of Florida; sisters Lanne Maes and husband George Osborne of Chicago, Illinois, and Karen Young and fiance' Timothy Sergio of Little Rock; brother, Robert Orval Young and wife Pam of Redmond, Oregon; and nieces and nephews, Rachael Maes of Chicago, Illinois, Jason Shepherd of Little Rock, Allan Young and Katherine Young, both of Redmond, Oregon.

A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at Ruebel Funeral Home with a memorial service scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Monday at the Oasis Renewal Center. A luncheon will follow the memorial service.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials to be made to the ARC Oasis Renewal Center, 14913 Cooper Orbit Rd, Little Rock, Arkansas, 72223, 501-225-6890, www.oasisrenewalcenter.org.

Cremation arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home.

Dr. Frank Kumpuris

Frank Gus Kumpuris, MD of Little Rock, one of Little Rock’s outstanding surgeons died on November 2, 2005. He was born on June 15, 1917 the son of the late Gus and Katherine Kumpuris.

He is survived by his wife Kula Makris Kumpuris of Little Rock, two sons; Dean Kumpuris, MD and his wife Mary of Little Rock, Andrew G. Kumpuris, MD and wife Nancy of Little Rock, one daughter Katherine Ann Trotter and husband Scott of Little Rock and eight grandchildren; Katherine Vogel and her husband Jon, Victoria Brown and her husband Stuart, Frank Kumpuris, Andrew Kumpuris, Richard Hahn, William Hahn and Elise Hahn. He was predeceased by one granddaughter, Anne Kumpuris, who died in 1997.

Dr. Kumpuris was a graduate of Tulane University and Tulane University Medical School. He did his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and was Chief Surgical Resident at St. Mary’s Hospital of the Mayo Clinic. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgery and was the Chief of Surgery at St. Vincent Infirmary in Little Rock. Dr. Kumpuris was owner of Bensky Furs of Little Rock and was co-owner of MK Distributors of Pine Bluff along with his brother in law, George A. Makris. He was on the board of directors of National Investors Life Insurance Company of Little Rock and later served on the board of Norin, Inc., a publicly traded insurance holding company based in Miami, Florida. Dr. Kumpuris was also on the board of Union National Bank. He was appointed to the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees by Governor Bill Clinton, where he spearheaded the development of the Cammack Campus and the implementation of system-wide educational standards. In addition, he served on the board of the Arkansas Symphony and was president of the Parent and Alumni Board at Washington and Lee University. Dr. Kumpuris was a 25-year member of the XV Club and the Downtown Rotary where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was an active part of the congregation of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for half a century, donating his time, talents and funds. He was an excellent golfer, an avid duck hunter and enjoyed traveling with his wife, Kula. Frank helped countless people pursue their dreams.

The family would like to acknowledge the loving care of St. Vincent’s HomeCare especially, Pat Sims, Dorothy Jackson and Renee Modica as well as Arkansas Hospice.

A memorial service, officiated by The Reverend Rocki Proffitt, will be held on Friday, November 4 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of the XV Club.

Memorials in lieu of flowers should be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 1000 N. Mississippi, Little Rock, 72207; Easter Seals of Arkansas, 3920 Woodland Heights Rd. Little Rock, 72212; or to the charity of choice.
