Novis Potts

Novis Potts, 88 of Little Rock died Wednesday, May 2, 2001. He was born in Mayflower, AR one of two sons born to Leonard A. and Martha L. Hopkins Potts. He was a graduate of Mayflower High School and in May 1937 he joined the Little Rock Police Force. On May 6, 1939 he married Margaret James. During WWII he joined the Navy and served four years. Upon discharge from the service he returned to the police force and retired from there in 1957. He then worked as a delinquent personal property tax collector, a freight salesman for Jones Truck Line, a bailiff for the Second Division Circuit Court and then took second retirement after working as a self-employed process server. He was a 32nd degree Mason, Magnolia Lodge and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He was also a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and a former resident of Good Shepherd Retirement Village.

Mr. Potts is survived by two daughters: Marcie Potts Bramley and her husband Ron of Germantown, TN and Ginger Potts Davis and her husband Les of Benton, AR, eight grandchildren, Kelley Melvin, Nikki Hayes, Tanya Novarese, Amy White, Scott Davis, Paige Davis, Kim Cox and Lynne Potts and five great grand-children: Alexi Melvin, Creighton and Reese Hayes, and J.T. and Halley Novarese. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a son, Jimmy Potts.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Ruebel Funeral Home by Rev. Craig Russell. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

William Carl Presley

William Carl Presley, age 84, of Little Rock, Arkansas, died Tuesday, February 6, 2001. He was born in Jamestown, Arkansas before he moved to Little Rock where he graduated from Little Rock High School. After school he joined the United States Army Air Corp serving as a First Lieutenant, bombardier on B24 bombers, in the South Pacific. He was involved with over 100 bombing missions. After the war he returned to Little Rock where he was a salesman with the Moon Distributing Company, retiring after 45 years of service. He was a member of Lakeside Country Club once serving as its president, a member of the American Legion, and Mabelvale United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Mashburn Presley of Little Rock, Arkansas, 2 daughters Jeanie P. Crouch and husband Joe of Benton, Sue Presley Clark and husband Tom Lamb of Benton, 1 sister Patricia Hamilton and husband Harold of North Little Rock, 5 grandchildren, Jeana Stout, Deana Hall, Jerrod Crouch, David Lamb, Brian Lamb, and 5 great-grandchildren.

There will be a visitation Thursday from 5 to 7 P.M. at Ruebel Funeral Home followed by a graveside service Friday at 11 A.M. at Pinecrest cemetery officiated by Reverend Steve Brizzi.

Memorials in lieu of flowers should be made to the Union Rescue Mission, Pulaski County Humane Society or Saline Memorial Hospital Hospice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Eva Marie Butler Price

Eva Marie Butler Price, 79, of North Little Rock, died Thursday, January 04, 2001. She was born in Little Rock to Clint and Grace Phillips Butler. She was a member of the First Nazarene Church in North Little Rock. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother.She is survived by two daughters; Sandra Williams of Checotah, OK and Pamela Austin and her husband James of Mt. Pine, AR, six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren two brothers, Joby Butler and Phillip Butler both of Mabelvale, and three sisters, June Cullum of North Little Rock, Betty Williams of Norman, OK, and Grace Stickley of Roland. She was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Shene. A visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday at the Ruebel Funeral Home followed by graveside funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Butler cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Vada Belle Purifoy

Vada Belle Purifoy, 92, of Little Rock died Wednesday, February 21, 2001 in El Dorado. She was born in Hot Springs, AR to Dr. Martial Wesley and Katie Atkins Purifoy.

Miss Purifoy attended Arkansas State Teachers College at Conway. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Hospital in Louisville, KY with an RN degree in 1934. In 1940 during WWII she enlisted in the U.S. Public Health Service, working as a Public Health Nurse in camp areas in the Mississippi County Health Dept. She graduated from George Peabody Teachers College in Nashville, TN with a B.S. Degree and a Degree in Public Health Nursing in 1944. She graduated from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, with a Masters Degree in Administrative Nursing, plus an internship in Public Health Nursing for 12 months. She did a National Study in 1958 at the University of Alabama, and wrote a thesis on the "Administration of Public Health Nursing Methods in 48 States. In 1959 she attended the University of Florida at Tallahassee working toward a Doctorial degree in the Past Masters Program for Special Education for Exceptional Children. She taught Public Health Nursing at the University of Arkansas from 1960 thru 1965.She received an appointment through World Health for a six month study in Europe, being the first American Nurse to study in Yugoslavia, Finland, England, France, Switzerland, and Denmark. In 1966 she started the first Social Workers Program in the North Little Rock Public Schools. From 1967-1968 she attended the University of Arkansas Graduate School in Little Rock. From 1974 to 1976 she taught in the Little Rock Public Schools as a substitute teacher. In 1976 she retired from teaching and entered Real Estate. She was a member of the world affairs committee of P&BW Club of Little Rock and a past chairwoman for the Business Women's Group at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church where she was a member of St. Catherine's Circle, St. Elizabeth's Circle, and the Alter Guild. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution. United Daughters of the Confederacy, Alpa Delta Kappa, Kapa Kapa Iota Teacher's Sorority, and the Retired Teacher's Association.

She is survived by a niece, Mrs. Katherine Bell and her husband, Darl of Sulpher, LA, a nephew, William R. Baker and his wife, Tommie of El Dorado, AR and several great nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday morning at the Chidister cemetery, Chidister, AR by Rev. Gerald Perry.

Memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church or to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Marjorie Lane Pursley

Marjorie Lane Pursley, 76, of Little Rock, died Friday, June 1, 2001. She was born in Gallatin, TN to Edwin Green Lane, Sr and Ruth Day Lane. She moved to Little Rock in 1974 and worked in the circulation department of the Arkansas Gazette for over sixteen years. Marjorie was an active participant at the Little Rock Athletic Club, enjoyed playing bridge, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by three children, John Edwin Ogles and his wife Barbara, of Memphis, TN, Martin Lee Ogles and his wife Kay of Granite Bay, CA and Ruth Pursley Klingbeil and her husband Joe of Little Rock, AR, one sister, Patsy Lane Kelley and her husband Leon of Gallatin, TN, two brothers, Frederick Lane of Memphis, TN and George M. Lane and his wife Bettie of Baton Rouge, LA and six grandsons. She is also survived by her former husband, Andrew G. Pursley of Little Rock.

Memorials may be made to the music fund of Rehoboth United Methodist Church, 2601 Cages Bend Rd, Gallatin, TN 37066 or St. Vincent Infirmary Foundation. A memorial service will be held in Gallatin, TN on June 9.

Era Reid

Era Reid, 97, of Little Rock died Friday, June 15, 2001. She was born in Hazen, AR to Thomas Edward and Effie Sparks Minton. Mrs. Reid was the widow of Clarence Reid who preceded her in death on November 11, 1968. In 1969 she began working at Hillcrest Gift and Variety Store and retired twenty years later when the store was sold.

She is survived by a daughter, Sarah Cutsinger of Dallas, TX and a son, Walt Reid and his wife Kay of Pocahontas, AR, a daughter-in-law, Martha Reid, of Little Rock, a sister, Kate Powers, of Apple Valley, CA, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Thomas O. Reid.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the Ruebel Funeral Home followed by a graveside funeral service at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Oakland cemetery by Danny Burleson.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Elizabeth Steward Roberts

Elizabeth Steward Roberts, age 87, of Little Rock, died Thursday, August 9, 2001. She was born in Bald Knob, Arkansas the daughter of the late William Ezekiel and Ola Plant Steward. She graduated from Bald Knob High School. She is preceded in death by her husband Bertram J. Roberts, who died in 1992 . Elizabeth was a member of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Rudd Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Roberts is survived by a son Phillip J. Roberts and wife Patricia of Little Rock, four grandsons, Bertram J. "Buddy" Roberts, Christopher Michael "Chris" Roberts, Daniel Scott Denley, and Maxwell Shane Denley all of Little Rock, one sister Mildred Matthews of Lafayette, several nieces and nephews and 2 cousins Norma Martin of Little Rock, and Pauline Burt of Minden, Louisiana.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Sunday at the Ruebel Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Monday at 10 A.M. at the Ruebel Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Reverend Lynn Lindsey. Burial will be at Rest Hills cemetery, North Little Rock. Memorials may be made to Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church or to a favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Rubye Eloise Adams Sams

Mrs. Rubye Eloise Adams Sams, 94, of Little Rock died May 17, 2001. She was born in Alma, AR, to C.M. and Caroline Adams on December 10, 1906. She graduated with a B.A. degree from Harding College in Searcy, AR. She taught elementary grades in Oklahoma and Arkansas and retired from the Little Rock school system. She was a long time member of the Sixth and Izard Church of Christ.

She is survived by two sisters, Norma Kilgore and her husband Dwight of Colorado; Ruth Ray and her husband George of Wisconsin; and a sister-in-law, Frances Adams of Batesville, AR; nephews Charles J. Ray of Colorado; Dwight Kilgore, Jr. and his wife Delitha of Idaho; Craig Kilgore and his wife Nancy of Washington; nieces Carolyn Ray of Ohio; and Sharon Rice and her husband John of Montana; and several great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; her parents; a brother, Charles Adams; and a sister, Vivian Carolyn Adams.

A graveside service will be conducted by Mr. John Gipson, minister of Sixth and Izard Church of Christ, at Pinecrest Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m. on Monday. Memorials may be made to Sixth and Izard Church of Christ or Southern Christian Home at Morrilton.

Ina McCarty Satterfield

Ina McCarty Satterfield, 86, of Little Rock died Sunday, March 11, 2001. She was born in Hope, AR to George Brinton and Mary Slovac McCarty. She was married to Will Hammond Satterfield who predeceased her in 1978.She was involved in volunteer work at St. Vincent's Infirmary and a longtime member of Pulaski Heights Presbyterian Church and her church circle group. Mrs. Satterfield enjoyed gardening and was active in her neighborhood garden club. She was also a sustaining member of the 20th Century Club, an avid golfer and former member of the Riverdale Country Club and Pleasant Valley Country Club. She was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother and dedicated to her family.

She is survived by her children, Brinton Satterfield, Marshall Satterfield and his wife Louise and Molly Satterfield, three grandchildren, April McCarty Satterfield, Katy Satterfield Landberg and her husband Karl and Jake Limberg and one great-grandson, Hunter Landberg and her niece Jane Swope. She was also predeceased by a son, Will Hammond Satterfield, Jr.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Roselawn Memorial Park by Rev. Tom Carte.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Leonard Scott

Leonard Scott, 86, of Little Rock, died Sunday March 25, 2001. He was born Greenville, Mississippi and graduated as salutatorian and president of his class from Greenwood High School in Greenwood, Mississippi. He received his A.B. degree at Vanderbilt University, magna cum laude, in 1934 and in 1937 his J.D. degree from Harvard University. He was admitted to practice in the United States District Court, Eastern and Western Districts of Arkansas, the United States Court of Appeals (8th Circuit) the united States Court of Appeals (9th District) (1982), and the Supreme Court of the United States (November 17, 1958). He served over two years in the United States Army serving during World War II. Not long after his return to Little Rock Leonard was employed by E. Charles Eichenbaum. Soon thereafter they were joined by W.S. Miller, Jr., and the three of them formed a law partnership. He was a member of the Pulaski County, Arkansas, and American Bar Association, American Judicature Society for over 30 years, and a Fellow of American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He was a member and one time president of Downtown Little Rock Rotary International and first President and Co-Founder of the Central Arkansas Rose Society, and a member of Temple B'nai Israel, Little Rock, where he served twice on the Board of Trustees. He was also a Scottish Rite Mason.

He is survived by his beloved wife Mary Simcoe Scott, of Little Rock, a son and daughter-in-law, Leonard Scott, Jr., and Mary Scott of Charlottesville, Virginia, a daughter, Scottie Tripcony, of Little Rock, a sister and brother-in-law, Karlyn and Jack Grundfest of Belleville, New Jersey, four grandchildren, Lisette Cooper and Husband Philip of Weston, MA, Walter Scott and wife Rain of Kensington, Maryland, Shane Tripcony and Wife Erin of Little Rock, and Shannon Tripcony of Little Rock, and three great-grandchildren, Scott Keto, Mariama Scott, and Brian Cooper.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Ellen House Simpson

Ellen House Simpson, 85, of Little Rock, died Thursday, February 01, 2001. She was born in Little Rock the daughter of the late Joseph Warren and Julia Clarke House. She attended Gulf Park Prep School in Gulf Park, Mississippi before completing her senior year at The National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C. She then attended Finch Junior College in New York City before enrolling at George Washington University in Washington. After her schooling, she returned to Little Rock in 1938 and married James Daniel Simpson, Jr. Mrs. Simpson was very active at her church, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral where she was a member since her childhood. She was also a past member of the Little Rock Junior League, the Asthetic Club, Little Rock Garden Club and the Country Club of Little Rock. She was the great-granddaughter of James P. Clarke, Senior Senator from Arkansas and President Pro-Tem of the United States Senate during the Presidency of Woodrow Wilson.

Mrs. Simpson is survived by her husband James D. Simpson, Jr. of Little Rock, two sons J. D. Simpson, III and his wife Ginna, Warren Simpson and his wife Leslie, all of Little Rock, three grandchildren Ellen Garrett Simpson, Jody Simpson Thompson, Clarke Simpson Delp, two great-grandchildren James Russell Thompson and Joseph Townes Delp, and a first cousin Mrs. Everett (Francis) Tucker of Little Rock.

There will be a funeral service Saturday at 2:00 P.M. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral officiated by The Very Reverend Henry Hudson.

Memorials in lieu of flowers should be made to the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging, P.O. Box 4301 West Markham Street, Slot 748, Little Rock 72205, or Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.
