Dorothy Elizabeth Moll
Dorothy Elizabeth Moll, 95, of Bryant, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005.
he was born in Wichita, Kansas on Dec. 4, 1909. She attended Wichita State University where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. She resided in Little Rock for many years where she was a member of St. James United Methodist Church. She had the good fortune of living a long, healthy and happy life. Her family and home created and sustained the meaning and substance of her life. She was an avid reader, an excellent bridge player and an astute financial manager and investor. She will be remembered by her loved ones as an intelligent, responsible, cheerful and gracious person. The birth of her first great-grandchild on Jan. 14th brought special joy to the last days of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Louisa Weppner; husband B.Leslie "Les" Moll; and sister Helen Synnamon.
Surviving are two daughters Leslie Elizabeth Barnes and her husband Carl of Tulsa, Okla., and Kathryn Anne Strock and her husband Douglas of Alexander; three grandchildren Brian Christopher Burton, Laurel Allison Ledbetter and her husband Joshua, and Mark Douglas Strock; a great-grandson, Kellen David Ledbetter; and a nephew Bill Synnamon and his wife Jan Ballew.
The family would especially like to express gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Fox Ridge Estate for the their professional, devoted care during the past three years.
Funeral was Saturday, Jan. 29, in the Chapel of Griffin Leggett Forest Hills, with Rev. Fred Haustein officiating. Burial was at Pinecrest Memorial Park.

GLADYS LUCILLE PINEGAR
Gladys Lucille (Shope) Pinegar, 85, Benton died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004 at the Arkansas Health Center. She was born Oct. 6, 1919 in Okolona to the late Jeff and Willie Shope. She was a retired LPTN at the Arkansas Health Center and a member of the Mt. Harmony Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Valjean Pinegar, sisters Ruth Sanders, Dorothy Walker, and brother Herman Shope. Surviving are a son Jerry Pinegar of Huntsville, Mo.; daughter Frances Callahan of Benton; sisters Charlene Turner, Myrtle Westbrook, and Jewell Burson, all of Benton; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Funeral was Monday, Nov. 22, at the Ashby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Norris Doddridge officiating. Burial was at Mt. Harmony cemetery. Pallbearers were Ronnie Saunders, Bob Westbrook, Johnny Westbrook, Clay Spikes, Phillip Montalvo, Dane Walker, David Burson and Robert Burson.
DOROTHY MAE VAUGHN
Dorothy Mae Vaughn, 79, of Jacksonville, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004.
She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Vaughn and one grandson Bill Vaughn.
Her entire life was devoted to her children. She was also a devoted Christian who had faith in God. She was a delight to everyone who knew her and always had a smile. She loved to laugh and play and loved to make people smile. She was loved by everyone who knew her. She was a sweet lady.
Surviving are two sons Jerry Vaughn (Lora) of Jacksonville and Michael Vaughn (Jeanette) of Herod, Ill.; one daughter Rebecca Sheffield of Sherwood; two brothers Roy Hall of Vandale and Woodrow Hall of Jonesboro; two sisters Bernice Tyner of Benton and Ruth Cook of Rogers; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral was Wednesday, Nov. 17, in the chapel of Moore's Jacksonville Funeral Home, with Pastor Kevin Bernard officiating. Burial was at White Church cemetery outside Brinkley.
J.L. Cates
J.L. (Chaney) Cates, son of the late W.T. and Josephine Cates, went to be with the Lord on May 23 rd, 2004.
He is survived by his loving wife, Maydell Cates; and seven children, Patricia Bone of Cabot, Sue Weatherford of Redfield, Randy Cates of England, Pam Mitchell of Carlisle, Rebecca Ethridge of North Little Rock, Gaylon Quintanilla of England, Kim Cates of Mablevale; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and a multitude of friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at 2 p.m. in The Trinity Tabernacle Church. Burial was in the Union Valley cemetery.
Lydie Perry Crigger
Lydie Perry Crigger, 104, of Hazen, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004. She was born in Hazen on Nov. 25, 1899. She always took a little pride in being one of the children of Joseph E. and Sallie McNeill Perry who was born "in town" rather than at the "old Home place, " which was a few miles north of Hazen. She was the ninth of ten children. Of those 10 children, four boys and four girls lived to adults. Her father was an entrepreneur who owned a store and farm land and by all accounts doted on his wife and daughters.
Lydie was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Wert Criggger. He was a Veteran of WWI and came to Arkansas from Tennessee looking for work. Like many fathers, Joe Perry wasn’t fond of Wert, so Lydie and Wert eloped. They were married
in a car going to Carlisle. The minister was in the passenger seat and the driver was acting as their witness. They were blessed with two sons, J.W. and Jerry Lee, who also preceded Lydie in death. Those of you who visited her were familiar with the pictures of her boys and heard many stories about them. Lydie never worked outside the home. She and her sisters could hook rugs, needle point chair covers, make drapes and cook up a storm. After the deaths of her boys, she especially enjoyed the company of children.
A nephew, Cleo Perry Jr. of Forrest City survives Lydie. The children of her dearest friend, Maxine Gilbreath, also survive her; GiGi Twist and Gil Gilbreath were grandchildren in every since of the word to her. There are quite a few great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews. They all have their own stories to tell, as do the many friends she made over the years.
None of us who knew her will ever be able to forget the enduring quality of God’s grace that was always with her. There was no bitterness about being left behind when most of her loved ones had gone ahead. There was no time for self-pity about a life-time of deafness. There were no recriminations, only forgiveness when we fell short of the mark. She was an example of the life Christ expected us to live.
Funeral services were Friday, May 28, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church in Hazen with Rev. James F. Holmes officiating. Music for the service was by her great-nephew Jim Sparks, Roxanne Bradow, Brian Ogilvie and Beth Sparks. Interment was in the Hazen cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Hazen or the Hazen cemetery. Arrangements were by Westbrook Funeral Home of Hazen.
Rebecca Hendrickson
Rebecca Hendrickson, 36, of Roe died Wednesday, May 26. Survivors include one daughter, Amber Adams; one son, Matthew Erwin; a stepdaughter, Stephanie Erwin; her parents mother, Gracie Alene Powell and father, Raymond Hendrickson; a sister, Tina Maney; and a brother, Shannon Hendrickson. Visitation: 9-10:15 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, at Brown Funeral Home, Clarendon. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, graveside, at Rock Roe cemetery, Aberdeen community.
Norman L. Whitaker
Norman L. Whitaker, 68, died May 28, 2004. He was born Dec. 22, 1935, in Des Arc, Ark., to William and Hettie Whitaker. He was retired from AMF, and was also a Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was of the Assembly Of God faith and a member of the American Legion.
He is survived by one son, Bedford Whitaker; two daughters, Anna Meyer and Norma Lee; one brother, Carl Whitaker; and four sisters, Dollie Basham, Shirley Rogers, Callie Wade, and Mary Towers; four grandchildren, Jeffery Lee, Melissa Lee, Tommy Joe Whitaker and Angelique Meyers.
Funeral service were set for Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Roller-Owens Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at Lakeside cemetery, Des Arc, Ark.
Catherine Ann Carter
October 11, 1922 - April 10, 2012
Catherine Ann Ferris Carter passed from this life and went to Heaven on April 10, 2012 in peace at home in Cabot. Catherine was born on November 11, 1922 in Ashland, Nebraska to Soloman (Samuel) and Rose Hadad Ferris. She was raised in Trinidad, Colorado. Catherine was a member of the Hadad Family, who arrived in Trinidad in 1903 after migrating from New York City. In 2003, the Hadad Family was honored as a century family of Los Animas County, Colorado. Upon graduation from high school, she enlisted in the United States Navy Waves in 1943. She went to Boot Camp in New York State and later stationed in Washington, D.C. While stationed there, she met her husband, Brents L. Carter.
Catherine and her family settled in Little Rock, Arkansas where she was employed by the Internal Revenue Service as a Tax Auditor. In October, 1982 she received the U.S. Treasury Albert Gallatin Award for Meritus Service. After retiring from the IRS, Catherine and Brents purchased the Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio in the University Mall and later Pleasant Valley Plaza. After her husband’s death in 1997, she continued to operate Merles Norman until 1999. Catherine was a sharp operator with a strong attention to detail. In 2004, she moved to live with her son and daughter in law, Dale and Susan Carter in Cabot, Arkansas. The next eight years was full of Mom’s love and daily instruction. She treated everyone as family and helped everyone improve daily.
She is survived by two sons and daughters, Richard B. and Laveda Carter of Los Lumas, New Mexico, Dale M. and Susan Carter of Cabot, Arkansas; daughter and son in law, Dianne and Larry Crunkleton of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; six perfect grandsons, Daniel, Paul, Thomas Crunkleton, Phillip Carter, Michael and Samuel Carter; seven great grandchildren. Grandma loved all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a classy lady and one of a kind loving all from Heaven.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Marshall Road Baptist Church with Brother Richard Carter and Paul Crunkleton officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park in Alexander, Arkansas. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm Friday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials be made to EXCEL – Exceptional Children’s Exercise League, 39 Ridge Road, Cabot, Arkansas 72023. Florence Sickel Mallard
Florence Sickel Mallard of Woodlands, Texas, died Sunday, September 26, 2004, after a long illness. She was 87 years old. Born in Stuttgart, Arkansas, Florence Sickel was the only daughter in a family with five children. She married
in the early years of World War II to Henry Clay Mallard, a local small businessman. In the early ’50s, the family moved to Alabama to pursue a business opportunity. She returned to Little Rock after the death of her husband, in 1964, where she worked as a school secretary at Pulaski Heights Elementary School, until her retirement.
Growing out of her passion for bird watching, Mrs. Mallard became an avid conservationist. She was active in numerous environmental and conservation causes in Arkansas, serving as President of the Audubon Society of Central Arkansas (1980-81) and a coordinator for the Arkansas Conservation Coalition. Governor Bill Clinton recognized her stewardship by appointing her to the 1980 Task Force on Timber Management. She was the founding President in 1991-92 of the Partners for Pinnacle, a group established to invigorate the moribund Pinnacle Mountain State Park. Never afraid to challenge thoughtless development by the powerful, she was instrumental in preserving Faulkner Lake for the people of Arkansas.
Florence Mallard received numerous awards in recognition of her service. These include the 1984 William Dutcher Award; the 1985 AWF-Sears Conservation Achievement Award; and the Arkansas Wildlife Federation named her Conservationist of the Year in 1985, citing her work as State Audubon Conservation Chair. She was honored by the Arkansas Times in 1989 as an Arkansas Hero.
Mrs. Mallard died in the Woodlands, Texas, where she had moved for health reasons to be near her son George. In addition to him, his wife, Susie, and granddaughter, Stephanie, she is survived by her son, Dr. Henry Clay Mallard, his wife, Catherine, and grandson, Jeremy, of New York City.
Funeral services were held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Tollville, Arkansas, on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004.

Ollie Alva Boggs
Ollie Alva Boggs, 94, a resident of Chambers Nursing Home in Carlisle, formerly of Hazen, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004. She completed her journey home to God with love, dignity and hope, a reflection of how she lived her life. She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ all of her life. She was born in Guymon, Okla., on June 9, 1910. She had resided in Hazen for approximately 50 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Delores Hopkins of Hobbs, N.M.; a son, Dr. Dwight Boggs of Paragould; one sister, Sallye Cannon of Powderly, Texas; daughter-in-law, Geneva Boggs of Carlisle; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; 10 nephews; two nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, H.A. "Bud’’ Boggs; two sons, Harry and John Boggs, a grandson, Brian Boggs and a greatgreat-grandson, Ryan Rutherford.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at the Westbrook Funeral Home Chapel in Hazen by Bro. T.J. Derryberry. Burial was in the Hazen cemetery. Pallbearers were David Brown, Tom Brown, Mike Knox, James Knox, Johnny Vandersteeg, and Ray Davis, Arrangements were by Westbrook Funeral Home of Hazen.
Hazel Sample
Hazel Eddins Sample, 96, of Biscoe died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, in West Memphis. Mrs. Sample was a lifelong resident of Prairie County. She was the oldest member of Brasfield United Methodist church and a longtime member of the Biscoe Extension Homemakers Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie; two sisters; two brothers; a grandson; and a great-grandson. Survivors include three sons, James of Marion, Don of West Memphis and Bobby of Biscoe; two sisters, Quilly Morgan of Jacksonville and Joyce Jones of Michigan; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren ; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Brasfield United Methodist Church on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, by Rev. Rob Walker and Rev. Debbie Harrison with interment in the Hazen cemetery. Pallbearers were Billy Joe Holloway, Bobby D. Holloway, Billy Hill, Austin Nail, James Prince, and Bobby Williford. Arrangements were by Westbrook Funeral Home of Hazen.
Franklin Odell Hester
June 6, 1937 - April 6, 2012
Franklin Odell Hester, Sr. of Cabot was born June 6, 1937 in Bald Knob to the late Alonzo and Lorene Farris Hester. He took the Lord’s hand as he left this earth Friday, April 6, 2012 at the age of 74, from complications of pneumonia and congestive heart failure.
He was a wonderful husband, father and pawpaw and a true friend to all that knew him. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Erna Behr Hester of Cabot, his daughter Liana (Jim) of Cabot and his son, Frank, Jr. (Marcha) of Hastings, Nebraska; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren as well as two brothers, Wayne Crenshaw of Texas and Martin McClain of Tennessee and two sisters, Dixie McClain of Jacksonville and Pam Johnson of Heber Springs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Geneva Parker and a brother, Marvin McClain.
Mr. Hester was retired from the U.S. Army after serving 20 years then retired from the Veteran’s Hospital after 36 years. He served in Korea and Vietnam where he received a Bronze Star. Brother Frank was a 32 degree mason and was a Past Master of Faulkner Lodge No. 738. He was a past Patron of Jacksonville Chapter 520, Cabot Chapter 508 and Past Worthy Grand Patron of Arkansas.
A memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012 in the chapel of Moore’s Jacksonville Funeral Home. The Hester family will receive family and friends at their home in Cabot. Arrangements are under the direction of Moore’s Jacksonville Funeral Home and Crematory (501)982-2136.
