David Anthony Cox
1991 Memphis in May World Champion Barbecuer David Anthony Cox, 55, of Carlisle passed away December 9, 2008. Born April 10, 1953, in Jonesboro, Ark., to the late David A. Cox and Bettye Cox. David was the owner of Laserplane of Arkansas and a 1971 graduate of Catholic High School. He was an avid hunter and was always bigger than life.
He was preceded in death by his father David A. Cox and his brother Huey Cox. Survived by this wife Joyce; son: Tim Griffis and wife Denna; granddaughter Kailee and grandson Carson of Lonoke; his mother Bettye Cox of Cabot; sister Stephanie Cox of Dallas, Texas; sister Theresa Baus and husband Charlie of Sarasota, Fla.; sister Mary Byers and husband Kent of Cabot; sister Holley Kordsmeier and husband Jim of Little Rock; two nephews, five nieces and six great-nieces.
A Rosary service was held Thursday, December 11, 2008, at 7 p.m. at Boyd Funeral Home in Lonoke, Ark., and a service was held Friday, December 12, 2008, at 10 a.m. at the St. Rose Catholic Church in Carlisle, Ark.
Carolyn Hall Hunter
Carolyn Hall Hunter, known as “Goodie” to several generations of children, great-grandchildren, and friends, died in her Lake Village home Saturday, Dec. 6, after a year’s brave battle with cancer. Born in Little Rock, Ark., to Hazel Janes Hall and Norman Russell Hall, Carolyn was the sweet baby sister of Norman Russell Jr. After their dear mother passed away in 1933, Carolyn and Norman spent much of their time with their Granny, Clara Janes, and their beloved aunt, Theresa (Pekie) Janes, while Daddy traveled for the Lion Oil Company.
About the time Carolyn began attending school, her family moved to El Dorado, Ark. About the same time, her Daddy remarried
a beautiful young teacher from Des Arc, Helen Booth. After Norman Sr.’s death in 1947, the three Halls moved back to Little Rock. Carolyn graduated from Little Rock Senior High School (now Little Rock Central High) and attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
In the summer of 1951, Carolyn enrolled in a summer school organic chemistry class. It was here that she met and married
L.M. Hunter, who was assigned to be her lab partner. The chemistry was special, and launched them into a long-term partnership. Carolyn and L.M. were married
early the next year. In 1953 they moved to Lake Village to work for Hunter Holloway in his drugstore downtown. In 1955, they opened their own store, Hunter’s Pharmacy, which was their primary enterprise for 50 years.
Carolyn was an integral part of L.M.’s business team, working in and for the drugstore. In addition, she was a devoted mother of three, Mary Jane, Mike and Dan. In the late 80s, she and L.M. adopted their granddaughter, Carolyn Michelle, and the family was complete.
Over the span of her 50 years in Lake Village, Carolyn was a member of a number of organizations, clubs and committees. She was a Girl Scout Leader for several years, taught Sunday school, led Bible School, church Youth Groups, etc. Her family and church were always first priority.
Carolyn’s family was dear to her. She is survived by her brother, Norman Russell and wife, Nancy of Little Rock; and three children, Mary Jane and Randy Hedeman of Sedgewick, Alberta, Lewis Michael and Susan Lea Cain Hunter of Fort Smith, and Daniel Hall Hunter of Lake Village. Carolyn was loved by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildrenCarolyn is also survived by many much-loved cousins, nieces, and nephews from the Janes and “Booth” family trees and a host of loving friends of all ages.
Burial was at Holy Innocents cemetery at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 12, in Lake Village, under the direction of Griffin Funeral Service, Lake Village. A memorial service followed at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Lake Village with the Rev. Lauren Moore officiating. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church.
J. C. Elliott
J. C. Elliott, age 80, of North Little Rock passed away Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008. J.C. was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Flossie Elliott.
He is survived by his three daughters, Sandra Cowart of Jacksonville, Kim Hudson of Conway and Penny Elliott of Sherwood; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at Center Point Baptist Church near Hazen by Rev. James F. Holmes. Burial was in the Center Point cemetery. Pallbearers were Glenn Holmes, Bob Wood, Darrell Whisenant, Tom Scott, Joe Caviness and Danny Ray Holmes.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Center Point cemetery, 2826 Hwy. 249 North, Hazen, Ark., 72064. J.C. served on the cemetery board for many years. Arrangements were by Westbrook Funeral Home of Hazen.
Nina Mae Perkins Nelson
Nina Mae Perkins Nelson, 76, of Little Rock passed away Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008.
She is survived by two sons, Hugh Perkins (Bernadeta Kreft), of Little Rock and Eddie Perkins, of North Little Rock; daughter, Susie Graddy (James), ofOrlando, Fla.; three grandchildren, Terry Perkins, Jamie Graddy (Kirk) and Nicholas Graddy; three daughters-in-law, Maria Perkins, Cindy Perkins and Peggy Perkins; and her former husband and father of her children, Russell Perkins, of Des Arc. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Nelson; and two sons, Vernon and Allan Perkins.

Mary Treadwell Keough
Mary Treadwell Keough, 66, resident of North Little Rock, Owner of Fabulous Designs and Wallpaper For Less, died Dec. 11, 2008 at the residence of her son in Memphis. A Baptist and wife of the late Albert Hugh Keough, she is survived by her children: Lisa Holliday of Fort Smith; Dennis Keough of Memphis; her sister, Willie Evans of Heber Springs; her brother, Leon Treadwell of Des Arc and four grandchildren.Graveside Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethany cemetery at Eads, Tenn. Jerdine Washington
Jerdine Washington was born July 31, 1937 to the late Bobe Jones and Elnora Wiley of Clarendon, Ark. She accepted Christ at an early age and was united with the Union Missionary Baptist Church in Clarendon. Jerdine departed this life on Dec. 9, 2008 at Stuttgart Hospital after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bobe Jones and step-mother, Rebecca; Elnora Wiley Peete and step-father, Tom; brother, Earl Jones; husband, Charlie Washington, and son, Fredrick Washington.
Jerdine was a loving, caring Mother, wife, neighbor and friend to all she came in contact with. She attended school at Carver High School in Clarendon.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Charles Washington, Leonard Washington (Faye), Terrance Washington (Mary), Dora Dawson, Marvin Tyler, Tracy Murry (Johnny), Kena Washington and Louise Washington all of Hazen, Fred Washington of Des Arc, Alice Washington of Jacksonville and Earl Washington of West Memphis; three sisters, Lois Brown, Pauline Peete and Maxine Henderson and one brother, Charles Peete all of Clarendon; 18 Grandchildren; 43 Great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; special grandsons, James Anderson and Jonathan Washington.
The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16th at Meredith Memorial COGIC, Hazen, with interment in Prairie Chapel cemetery. Arrangements are by Boyd Funeral Home, Lonoke.
Jennifer Marie Gill Morris
On Jan. 1, 2009, Jennifer Marie Gill Morris, 36, of Hazen went home to be with Jesus.
She was born Nov. 11, 1972, in Davenport, Iowa. She graduated from Stuttgart High School in 1991. Jennifer was a threetime Women’s World Champion duck caller. She was employed at Mack’s Prairie Wings for 10 years where she was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jackie Hoyet Gill.
She is survived by her mother, Beverly Gill of Ulm; one sister, Jennie Orsburn of Ulm; two nieces, Lori Ann and Jordon; her loving partner, Rita, and her children, Hydi, Camron and Wade; and one granddaughter, Emily of Hazen.
Funeral services, officiated by Bro. Thomas Bormann, were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Turpin Funeral Home chapel with burial following in Ulm cemetery.
Jennifer will live on through many people’s lives that she has touched - her friends, her family, her coworkers and even those ducks!
But for now, these words she would say to you - “Bye, bye, now - I’ll see you soon!”
Ora Mae Tippitt McNeill Cox
Ora Mae Tippitt McNeill Cox, 98, of Hickory Plains, Arkansas, passed from this life Monday, December 29, 2008, at Des Arc Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Des Arc. She was born to Cordis and Nancy Grace Jones Tippitt on December 3, 1910, at Wattensaw, Arkansas.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Norman L. McNeill; her second husband, Rupert Cox; two daughters, Mary Louise McNeill and Norma Faye McNeill; one son, Eugene McNeill; one brother, Harvey Tippitt; four sisters, Rita Tippitt, Verna Gross, Ona Pryor, and Hazel Lendermon; and one son-in-law, Phillip Hansmann.
She is survived by three sons, John L. McNeill (Joyce) of Des Arc, Jerry McNeill (Shirley), Mike Mc-Neill (Willie) of Hickory Plains; two daughters, Lela Rogers (Don) and Margaret Hansmann of Des Arc; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2008, at Hickory Plains Missionary Baptist Church in Hickory Plains, Arkansas, with burial in Hickory Plains cemetery.
Eldridge Shered
Eldridge Shered, 42, formerly of Hazen, died December 21, 2008 in Georgia. Eldridge was born November 22, 1966 to the late Charles Russell and Thelma Roland (Cohen).
Eldridge attended Hazen High School, graduating in 1986. His hobbies included basketball, football, track and field during his early years. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard where he was stationed in Corpus Christi in Dallas, Texas where he served for a term of four years. After serving his term with the U.S. Coast Guard, he went on to become a truck driver traveling from coast to coast for many years. His last employment was with Central Refrigeration Trucking where he had worked for seven months.
He leaves to cherish his memories his mother, Thelma Cohen; son, Marcus Penn, both of Hazen; daughter, Brittany Jackson of Carlisle; two grandchildren; five brothers, Rickey Hussey (Barbara) of Hazen, Lysander Shered of Hazen, Argarrick Howard of Russellville, Mareo Earl and Jay Cohen, both of Hazen; two sisters, Maria Shered of Stuttgart and Ann Earl (Travis) of Carlisle; one uncle, Faite Roland of Hazen; two special aunts, Margie Roland of Hazen and Thelma Cannon of Lonoke, seven aunts, one great-aunt, Ruby Smith Mosby of Hazen and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday, January 3, 2009 at the Old National Guard Armory in Hazen, Elder Ronnie Mosby officiating. Pallbearers were Stanley Russell, George Penn, Thurman Penn, Carl Roland, Ray Burton and Cornelius Earl. Honorary pallbearers were Lysander Shered, Argarrick Howard, Rickey Hussey, Carlos Russell, Mareo Earl and Jay Cohen. Interment was in Green Grove cemetery, Hazen.
Arrangements were by McNeal-Calahan Funeral Home, Inc., Brinkley, Arkansas.
Nelda Frances Roehm
Nelda Frances Roehm, age 76, of Hot Springs, died Sunday, December 28, 2008. She was a graduate of Arms Academy in Massachusetts and the Richmond Professional Institute of Richmond, Virginia, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in applied physiologyand a Master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling. Mrs. Roehm was past president of the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation.
Nelda was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John “Jack” C. Roehm. She is survived by a sister, Carol Furlong of St. Petersburg, Florida; numerous nieces and nephews, and many special friends, including Ruth Davenport-Smith, Clint Logan, Russell and Debbie Logan, Mark, Susan, and Rob Curry, Anita Narbut, Richard Roehm, and Rachel Lundquist.
Graveside services were held on Friday, January 2, 2008, in the Hazen cemetery. Arrangements were by Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen Memorials may be made to the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation.
Peter Washington Boyles, Jr.
Peter “Rabbit” Washington Boyles, Jr., 79, passed from this life Tuesday Dec. 30, 2008, after a long battle with cancer. He was born July 11, 1929 to Peter Washington Boyles, Sr., and Elva May Bradford Boyles of the Furlow community. He was preceded in death by his parents; twosisters, Margaret Boyles and Elva Pruitt; three brothers, Ed and Frank Boyles and Harvey Bradford; and one son, Gary L. Boyles.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Regina Hedrick Boyles (formerly of Carlisle), two sisters, Ethel Boyles Burgess of Searcy, and Eva Boyles Griggs of Fort Myers, Fla.; two daughters, Tanya Hensley of Furlow and Tina Boyles of Lonoke; two sons, Harrell (Renee) Boyles ofBryant and Brad (Debbie) Boyles of Arlington, Texas; one daughter-in-law, Jimmie Boyles of Lonoke; 12 grandchildren, Peter and Preston Boyles, Sharrell Gault, Reina Alexander, Richare Lauren, Matthew Boyles, Tammy Rowe, Korey, Kara and Kyle Hensley and Lydia and Annie Boyles, seven (and one on the way) great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Pete was a 1948 graduate of Lonoke High School, a past master of the Masonic Lodge #51 in Lonoke, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lonoke. While working in insurance sales for over 40 years, he also was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. Pete was a former pony league baseball coach in the summer baseball program in Lonoke, and loved working with youth. In 2006, Pete was honored with 59 years of service to the Lonoke Jackrabbit sports program. He loved his hometown and was very committed to the community and its activities. Except for one year, he spent his entire life in Lonoke.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at First United Methodist Church, Lonoke. Interment was in Concord cemetery, Furlow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lonoke First United Methodist Church. A scholarship in his name will be established at the Lonoke High School and donations to that scholarship may be made through the High School located at 501 Academy Street, Lonoke, Ark., 72086, in care of Pete Boyles Scholarship Fund.
