Helen Faye Plake
Helen Faye Plake, 69, of Clinton, Arkansas passed away January 12, 2003 in Conway, Arkansas. She was born October 19, 1933 in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of the late Wesley and Pearl Earnestine Curtis Harness, also widowed by Kenneth Edward Plake. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. She was a volunteer for Fairfield Bay Rescue Squad, Volunteer for 'Wear and Share', GWRRA, AL-Anon, American Legion, VFW Ladles Aux., and attended Culpepper Community Church.
She leaves her loving companion, Bert Graig of Clinton, AR; a son Kenneth Steven Plake and Kathy M. Yount of Collinsville, Illinois; two brothers Lacy Ray Harness and Donald (Butch) Harness both of St. Louis, MO; a sister Peggy Moore of St. Louis, MO; two grandsons, Jason A. and Casey L. Plake; two granddaughters Jennifer F. and Ashley N. Plake all of Bellvielle, IL; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held Wednesday, January 15, at 2 p.m. in Roller McNutt Chapel in Clinton, Arkansas, with a service following Friday, January 17 at 2 p.m. in Valhalla Funeral Home with interment in Valhalla.

Charles L. (Chuck) Ranft
Charles L. (Chuck) Ranft, Sr. age 86, of Fairfield Bay, AR (formerly Milwaukee, WI) passed away at home on January 7, 2003. Mr. Ranft was born October 24, 1916 in Port Edwards, WI.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Constance L. (Connie) Ranft; one daughter, Cheryl (Ranft) Chandler of Kenosha, WI; Five sons, Craig (Valerie) of Wauwatosa, WI; Christopher (Pamela) of Fairfield Bay, AR; Charles, Jr. (Nancy) of Las Vegas, NV; Curt (Jacilyn) of Bay View, WI; Jeffery Ranft of Wauconda, IL; seventeen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Ranft moved to the Bay in 1992 and thought it was as close to perfection as one could get. He was a World War II veteran and a member of Fairfield Bay Lions Club and American Legion Post 333.
A memorial Mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Friday, January 31st at 11 a.m.
Evelyn Gentry
Evelyn Gentry, age 88, of Greers Ferry, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Indian Rock Village in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. Born in Arkansas on May 8, 1915, she was the daughter of the late John and Emma Hooten.
Mrs. Gentry was a homemaker and lifetime resident of Arkansas. She was a Christian. Her husband, Claude Gentry, preceded her in death in 1984.
Survivors include one sister, Lois Hunt of Greers Ferry, AR, and her nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gentry is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.
Graveside services for Mrs. Gentry will be held Thursday, March 25, at 10:00 A.M. in the Settlement cemetery. Her nephews will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc., 601 W. Main, Heber Springs, AR 72543.
Howard H. Buer
Howard H. Buer, age 82 of Fairfield Bay passed away March 25, 2004.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Raymir Behrens Buer, daughter Karen of Ballwin, MO., son Scott of Omaha, NE., grandchildren Sarah of San Diego, CA, Rebecca of Ballwin, MO., Christopher, Dana and Melanie of Omaha, NE. and brother Gordon of Dover, NJ.
Born January 14, 1922 to Hertha and Henry Buer in Milwaukee, WI, he obtained a Bachelor of Science and Masters Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, where he was a member of Triangle Engineering Fraternity and honorary fraternities Tau Beta Phi and Chi Epsilon. He was a World War II veteran.
During his career, he taught Civil Engineering at the U of WI. and U. of Delaware, designed bridges for the states of Wisconsin and headed computer centers at several schools and colleges.
He was a Christian who served as Master of Masonic Lodge, member of Scimitar Shrine, President of the Fairfield Bay Shrine Club, member of the Scottish Rite and President of the Fairfield Bay Rotary Club.
He has been a resident of Fairfield Bay for fifteen years.
Remains were cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements being handled by Roller-McNutt of Clinton. (501) 745-2151
Marvin L. Smith
Marvin L. Smith, June 11, 1927 - March 26, 2004. Marvin is survived by his loving wife, Georgia, his sons, Dennis (Jeri) Smith, Rudy (Michelle) Smith, Grandchildren, Daniel (Lynn) Smith, and Philip Smith, Jillian (Matt) Kosiara, Bailey, Chelsi, and Ashlee Smith. Great grandchildren, Vanessa and Amanda Smith, Tatum and Carter Kosiara, step-children, Pam (Mike) Carroll, Tom Taylor, Beth (Max) Elrod, Cheryl (Jerry) Neal, Barbara (Bill) Farrar, also 12 Step-grandchildren, dearest aunt Max, brother-in-laws and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Christine, parents Carl and Josephine Smith and brother Donald.
Marvin was a Navy Veteran of WWII and Korean war. He retired from International Harvester (Navistar) in Rock Falls, IL and Chicago, IL. He was Kiwanis President, Little League President, and founding Member of the Rock Falls Presbyterian Church. In Calumet City, IL he was the Sunday School Superintendent and Clerk of Session at the Community Presbyterian Church.
He retired to Fairfield Bay, AR where he was president of The Lions Club, treasurer of Wear and Share, treasurer and board member of the I.R.V. Aux, member of the Ozark Health Hospital Aux, (Clinton, AR). He was active in Outreach of the Hills and Clerk of Session at Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church. He was a friend to all and enjoyed doing community service.
Visitation was Sunday, March 28, 2004 at Olmstead Funeral Home, Fairfield Bay, AR from 5-7 p.m. A celebration of Marvin's life was held Monday, March 29, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church, Fairfield Bay, AR with Rev. Charles (Chuck) Gilmore
Charles (Chuck) Gilmore, age 81, died on March 31, 2004 at the Indian Rock Village Health Care Center, Fairfield Bay, AR.
He attended the University of Alabama and was employed with radio station KGFL-KHPQ, Clinton, AR until his retirement in 2002. He was honored with a plaque for the salesman of the Century. He also worked in broadcasting in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Arkansas. Chuck was dedicated to his family, his lord and his church. He served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and other leadership roles in the churches he attended. This world is a better place because of so many lives that he has touched.
Chuck was born in Birmingham, AL February 11, 1923. He served in WWII in the communications field which gave him his early start in broadcasting.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Patricia, one son, Charles L. Gilmore of Altamonte Springs, FL and three daughters, Carol Posusney, of Knoxville TN, Elaine Trull of Ringgold, GA and Pamela Braach of Philipsburg, Montana. There are also 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
A memorial service was held April 9th at the Fairfield Bay Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Wayne Smith and Ronny Waycaster. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 909 W 2nd St, Little Rock, AR 72201 or the Department of Public Service, P.O. Box 14100, Fairfield Bay, AR 72088.

William Torbleau Phillips
William Torbleau Phillips, 87, died April 7, 2004 at home in Sherwood. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Johnnie M. Dunbar Cathey, daughters Elizabeth J. Phillips and husband Walter Krom of Windham, NY; Millicent Ann Phillips of Marshall, AR; Joni Coyote of Pasadena, CA; son Ron W. Phillips and wife Lori of Fairfield Bay, AR; and stepdaughter Melissa A. Cathey of Sherwood. Previously, he had been married
for 55 years to Julia Mary Phillips, who died in 1993.
Mr. Phillips also had three granddaughters: Katharine E. Haber and husband Jason of Santa Barbara, CA; Chelsea Calderon and husband Dago of Alameda, CA; Paige E. Phillips of Santa Clara, CA; and one grandson, Yates W. Phillips of North Little Rock. He had three great grandsons in California: Boden Brown Haber, and Oz and Max Calderon.
He was born in Little Rock, May 17, 1916, the son of Josephine Alice Torbleau Phillips and William Davies Phillips.
Mr. Phillips retired in 1981 from Honeywell, as general superintendent for all control installations for the building control division. He was a member of Local 155 of the Steam and Pipe Fitters Union, and conducted apprentice training for many years. He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Little Rock.
His body is being donated to medical research, in keeping with his lifelong wish. Donations may be made to Arkansas Hospice Foundation and the American Cancer Society.
The family will be receiving friends at home on Saturday, April 10, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. A memorial service is being planned for a later date. Arrangements by North Little Rock Funeral Home, 1921 Main St., 758-1170.
Dr. Charles Lundeen Swan
The Reverend Dr. Charles Lundeen Swan passed quietly in Lexington, KY on March 26th after a brief illness. Dr. Swan was born in Calcutta, Bengal, India on August 5, 1909 the first son of the Reverend Henry Marcus Swan and Edna Lundeen Swan who were Methodist missionaries. He completed his early education in India and then came to the United States in 1925 for college. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago in 1929 and, that same year, returned to India as a teacher at the Mt. Hermon School in Darjeeling. There he met and married
Kathleen Vivian Doucette, a Registered Nurse engaged in training Indian nurses under the auspices of the Canadian Baptist Church. The marriage continued for 53 years until Kathleen's death. The couple had two sons; Alan Charles of Miami, FL who is Professor of Law at the University of Miami School of Law and David Stephen who between 1970 and 1999 practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology in Lexington and Berea, KY. Following his term as a teacher at Mt. Hermon School, Dr. Swan came to the United States to earn the Bachelor of Divinity degree from the Garrett Biblical Institute of Northwestern University. He then returned with his family to India to serve as District Superintendent for the Methodist Church in Hyderabad, Deccan. After nearly six years in that capacity, Dr. Swan again came to the United States to earn the doctorate degree in Sociology from Northwestern University. He joined the faculty of Albion college in Albion, MI where he rose from assistant professor to professor and Chairman of the Department of Anthropology-Sociology. In 1974 he joined the faculty of Sociology at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI specializing in the study of contemporary movements within non-Western cultures and of race and culture conflicts in urban America. He retired from Wayne State in 1979 and completed his academic career with two years of teaching in Turkey for the United States Air Force. During Dr. Swan's years at Albion and Wayne State he and Mrs. Swan traveled throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East with several extended stays for research purposes in India. Among his principal interests was the study of the caste and cultural conflicts that had arisen with the rapid urbanization of certain theretofore largely agrarian areas of India. Among the more memorable of these trips occurred in 1958 when Dr. and Mrs. Swan flew to Copenhagen, Denmark, purchased a VW 'bug', drove through Central Europe to Greece, along the length of Turkey, through Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan to Pakistan, India and on to Katmandu, capitol of Nepal where they sold the 'bug'. On this trip, the Swans had the distinction of being the first persons to drive a private automobile into Katmandu on the then just completed and utterly treacherous road through the Himalayan mountains from India to Nepal. Throughout his academic career, Dr. Swan never lost his interest in or his love for the Church. In all those years he served as pastor of a number of country churches in the Western Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church. In 1986 the then widowed Dr. Swan married
Doris Notestein. They moved to Fairfield Bay, AR where Dr. Swan was active with the Poets of the Lake, establishment of the Senior Citizen Center and the local Methodist church. With the death of his beloved Dorie in January of this year his will to live declined. He succumbed to age and its effects after a short illness. He is survived by his two sons, six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Throughout his life Charles Swan not only preached but practiced the ethical tenets of his religion. Most notable he consistently lived a life that exemplified his conviction that in Christ's admonishment - 'inasmuch as you have done it unto the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me' - one could find not only a statement of belief but a blueprint for life. Services were held in Fairfield Bay, AR and Grosse Pointe, MI.
Roger. G. Berg
Roger. G. Berg, son of the late Grant Oscar and Opal Virginia (Lovejoy) Berg, passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at his home in Fairfield Bay, AR. Born July 18, 1927 at St. Ansgar, IA he was 76 years of age. Roger worked for Nipco Power Company as a lineman in La Mars, IA before coming to Fairfield Bay. Roger and his wife, Monica, were married
May 28, 1966. Roger was very friendly and personable. He never met a stranger and was always making new friends on the golf course, at church and the entire Fairfield Bay area. He was very active in the community, his church, top of the mountain neighborhood group, and helping his neighbors and friends. He was an usher at Fairfield Bay United Methodist Church and held other offices. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Max Dale Berg, who was killed in action in WWII. Roger is survived by his wife, Monica (Frazeur) Berg, of Fairfield Bay, AR; his sons: Randy Berg and his wife, Bonnie, of Sioux City, IA, Robin Berg and his wife, Kris, of Clinton, UT who is serving in the military and Shane Berg and his wife, Edna, of Syracuse, UT; his daughters: Renae Braughton and her husband, Phil, of Omaha, IA and Debbie Liby and her husband, Brian, of Bonaire, GA; a brother, Raymond Berg, of Fairfield Bay, AR; 10 grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. A memorial service was held Monday, April 19 at 10:30 a.m. at Fairfield Bay United Methodist Church with Reverend Bonda Moyer officiating. Phillip Joseph Vaasson Sr.
Phillip Joseph Vaasson Sr., son of the late Joseph A. and Josephine (Erwin) Vaasson, passed away Sunday, April 11 at Baptist Health, Heber Springs, Ark. Born February 19, 1947 at Hazel Green, Wisc. he was 57 years old. He was the owner of Devils Fork Resort in Greers Ferry, Ark. where he lived for 15 years, coming from Galena, IA. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fairfield Bay, Ark., a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Lions Club and he really enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his wife Marion (Hannaman) Vaasson. His sons, Phillip, Jr. Vaasson and his wife Mary of Indinola, IA and Larry Vaasson and his wife Melisa of Galena, IA, his brother John Vaasson of Ely, IA, his sister Karen Disck of Verona, WI, four grandchildren, Erika, Tasha, Dakota and Derrick, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Visitation was Thursday, April 15 at Olmstead Chapel, Heber Springs, AR. Funeral mass was Friday, April 16 also at Olmstead Chapel, Heber Springs, AR with Deacon Frank Zanoff officiating. Jean S. Hubbard
Jean S. Hubbard, 84, died Saturday, May 1 at Good Samaritan Indian Rock Village in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. She was born Eula Jean Strange near Clinton, Illinois on September 21, 1919 to Charles and Mabel (Dusenberry) Strange. A graduate of Illinois State Normal University she taught physical education at Bloomington High School. She married
Harold E. Hubbard November 4, 1940. He died May 11, 1993. They owned and operated Hubbard's Cubord restaurant in Bloomington for 28 years. The couple moved to Fairfield Bay in 1978. Survivors include a daughter, Marcia (Donald) Isch of Tucson, Arizona; a son, Mark Hubbard of Franklin, Illinois; five grandsons and two great-granddaughters. She is also survived by two sisters: Marie Hastings, Normal, and Dorothy Martin, Normal, and a brother, George Strange of Clinton, Illinois. One sister and one brother preceded her in death. She was a past member of Second Presbyterian Church, an avid golfer at Lakeside and Bloomington Country Clubs and had served as President of the Illinois Women's Golf Association. A memorial service was held Friday, May 7 at 11 a.m. at Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church, Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. Memorials to the church or charity of the donor's choice.
