Joyce Krava was killed in a car accident in Clinton Monday, November 3, 2003.
She is survived by a son, a daughter and three grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at St. Francis in Fairfield Bay on November 6.
Kallie Lynn Nelson
Kallie Lynn Nelson of Romance died Thursday morning November 13, 2003 at the white County Medical Center in Searcy.
She was 8 years old and fought a courageous battle with a brain tumor.
Kallie was born June 8, 1995, in Searcy, the daughter of Julie Nanette Knight and Roger Lynn Nelson. She was a second grade student at Rose Bud Elementary School. Kallie was an exceptional girl who touched and brightened the lives of all who knew her.
She is survived by her mother, Julie Eubanks and husband, Brad, of Romance; her father Roger Nelson and wife, Gela, of Romance; two brothers Lewis Nelson and Augustus Eubanks both of Romance; her grandparents, Shirley Knight of Fairfield Bay, Charlie and Louise Nelson of Rose Bud; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Bill Knight, and two cousins, Ethan and Rachel Bonds.
Visitation for Kallie will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the Powell Funeral Home in Searcy.
Funeral Services were conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 15, 2003, at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel in Searcy with interment in Bethesda cemetery near Rose Bud.
Memorials may be made to the Arkansas Children's Hospital, Pediatric Brain Tumor Clinic, 800 Marshall Street, Little Rock, AR 72202-3591.

Frank B. Mentel
Frank B. Mentel, age 94, passed away Sunday, November 16, 2003 in the Indian Rock Village Nursing Home. He was born in New York City, February 25, 1909, the son of the late Benedict Mentel and Josefa Stocka Mentel. He was born in New York City and lived in both Astoria and Copiague, New York until he moved to Fairfield Bay in 2002. Frank was a member of Jan bus Presbyterian Church in New York City. He was a printer by trade and claimed that a very distant relative worked on the Guttenberg Bible. Frank was exceptional in World War II as a staff sergeant with the 42nd "Rainbow" division in the European theatre. He was a good man and lived a long and happy life. He is now in the company of angels with his beloved wife, Alike, to whom he was married
for 62 years.
He is survived by his sister; Marry Vajda of Savannah Georgia and niece, Marianne Horan and husband Tom of Savannah, Georgia. Nephews, Albert Vajda and wife, Sharon of Greers Ferry, Arkansas and Paul Vajda of Batesville, Arkansas. He is also survived by grand nieces and nephews, T.J. Horan of Del Mar, CA., Kimberly and Neal Rhone of Lewisville, TX., Michael and Jordan Horan of Charleston, SC., Michael and Beth Ann Vajda of Cranford, NJ., Stephen Vajda of Oakland, CA., and Allison Vajda of Albuquerque, NM.
A private graveside service will be Friday, November 21, 2003 at St. Michael's cemetery, East Elmhurst, NY.

Willie Laverne Berry
Mrs. Willie Laverne Berry, age 80, of Shirley, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2003, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas.Born on December 19, 1922, at Shirley, Arkansas, she was the daughter of the late Charlie J. and Leona (Nixon) Huggins. Mrs. Berry was a lifetime resident of Shirley. She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claudie Lee Berry, Sr., who passed away on October 6, 1997. Mrs. Berry was also preceded in death by four brother, Huey, C. J., George, and Homer Huggins, one sister, Lydia Crew, and one grandson, Alex Kirkendoll. Survivors include two sons, Claudie Berry, Jr. of Shirley, AR and Jimmy Berry of Fairfield Bay, AR four daughters, Rhonda Carlton, Lavern Bolden, and Gail Kirkendoll, all of Shirley, AR and Kathy Berry of Houston, Texas one sister, Betty Moss of Shirley, AR thirteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.Mrs. Berry is also survived by other relatives and her many friends. Visitation will be held Friday, November 21, 2003, from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at Woodland Memorial Park. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, at 2:00 P.M. in the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church with Rev. Kenny Dunham officiating. Interment will follow in the Settlement cemetery. Reynold Mathew Brown
Mr. Reynold Mathew Brown, age 85, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, passed away at his home on Tuesday, December 2, 2003. Born in Montrose, Minnesota, on February 22, 1918, he was the son of the late Mike and Teresa (Schneider) Phillips. Mr. Brown as a retired postal carrier for the United States Postal Service. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Marines in the Pacific. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at Fairfield Bay. His wife, Arlene Brown, preceded him in death in 1989. Survivors include: his sons, David Brown of Centennial, Colorado, Steven G. Brown of San Juan, Capistrano and Paul R. Brown of Spokane, Washington; his daughters, Mary J. Nistler of Oak Park, Illinois, Gail T. Brown of Mt. Vernon, Iowa and Patricia N. Brown of St. Louis, Missouri; fifteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mr. Brown is also survived by other relatives and his many friends. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, December 5, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Fr. Tom Keller officiating. Interment will be in Ft. Dorothy Mae Fitzgerald
Dorothy Mae Fitzgerald, age 85, a charter member of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2003, at the Ozark Health Medical Center in Clinton, Arkansas.
"Dottie" and her husband Eugene "Fitz" Fitzgerald were the first permanent residents of Fairfield Bay. After retiring from the United States Navy, they built a home on Lakeside Drive in 1968 when the only paved road at the Bay was Highway 330 down to the Marina.
Dottie and the eight salesmen's wives and the few new-resident wives, began the Ladies Club which was active for many years; holding pie suppers and festive events at the Marina and then at the Racquet Club.
Dottie was talented as well as intrepid. A charter member of the Fairfield Bay Methodist Church, Dottie was a fine musician and played keyboards for the Church for many years. Further, she played for the popular melodramas staged at the Racquet Club with local talented people. She was active in the Little Theatre usually playing piano.
She wrote an operetta called "The Magic of the Ozarks", composing the music, and writing the lyrics and script. It was produced at the Civic Center by the Little Theatre using local singers and actors. The story tells of how a troubled couple find joy and fulfillment in the natural beauty of the Ozarks and the magic of a country church.
Active in the Poets of the Lake, she delighted in experimenting with the many forms of poetry the organization studied. She wrote several books of poetry and self published them.
An adopted child herself, Dottie, in her way, adopted others. She nurtured many a budding musician with music lessons, support and encouragement. She adopted Fairfield Bay as her home and gave it all of her talent and energy. Likewise, Fairfield Bay supported Dottie, providing nearly all of her needs within the community, including the personal interest so characteristic of the area.
She is survived by Roberta Katz-Messenger, friend and "adopted daughter," of Clinton, Arkansas. Memorials can be made to the Fairfield Bay Animal Shelter, NCAFAE, or the Fairfield Bay Methodist Church.
Reverend Doctor William Brooks Dublin, Jr
The Reverend Doctor William Brooks Dublin, Jr., age 64, passed away December 2nd following a short illness. Preceding Dublin in death were his parents, Dorothy Spencer Lea Dublin and Dr. William Brooks Dublin, and his first wife, Dr. Mary Virginia Charlton. He also leaves his wife, Rose, daughters Lee Anne Grace, Colleen Dublin, Mary K. Oglesby, all of the Tupelo, Mississippi area and Cynthia Brooks Ball of Oxford, Kansas, stepdaughters Denise Rice of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Lynette Edgar of Heber Springs, Arkansas, and stepson Bob Hufford, Jr. of Little Rock, Arkansas, five grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and cousins Richard Lea, John Fisher and Suzanne Lea, all of California. Dr. Dublin was a retired pastor of the United Methodist Church and served parishes in Tennessee, Virginia and Arkansas. He was an expert and lecturer on the 'small church', was active in the mission field, hospice, special-needs ministries and special-needs camping. A life-long sports enthusiast, Dublin was a certified sports official, as well as a sports writer. He most recently served as Sports Editor for the Sun-Times in Heber Springs, Arkansas. He directed a program utilizing volunteers, from the faith community, that helped the infirm and elderly remain in their homes rather than be hospitalized and served as a hospice chaplain. Dr. Dublin devoted his life to ministering to the needs of others. Dr. Dublin graduated Brigham Young University with a B.S. and Master's degree of Recreational Education. He received his Master of Divinity from Memphis Theological Seminary and his Doctorate of Ministry from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Visitation will be Thursday evening, December 4th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Olmstead Funeral Home in Heber Springs, Arkansas. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 5th, at 10:00 a.m. at Maranatha Assembly of God in Shirley, Arkansas. Internment will be in Dillwyn, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in Dublin's name to your favorite charity.
Marian P. Kovacevich
Mrs. Marian P. Kovacevich age 79, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas passed away Sunday November 30, 2003 at the Conway Regional Medical Center in Conway, Arkansas. Born in Minnesota on January 22, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Pearl (Daniels) Cleveland.
Mrs. Kovacevich was a retired secretary for Anaconda Wire and Cable Company, She has been a resident of Fairfield Bay for twenty two years, and she was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband, Nick Kovacevich of Fairfield Bay, AR, one son Michael Kovacevich of Elburn, Illinois and two granddaughters, Olivia and Kelsie, both of Elburn Illinois. Mrs. Kovacevich is also survived by other relatives and many of her friends. A memorial service will be held Friday December 5th at 11:00 A.M. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Fr. Charles Groetzinger
Charles Groetzinger RACINE - Charles Groetzinger, 49, passed away at All Saints Healthcare on Saturday, December 13, 2003. Chuck was born in Racine on February 20, 1954, to Donald and Helen (nee: Peterson) Groetzinger. He graduated from William Horlick High School in 1972. Chuck spent most of his working life in the family business, PLI LLC, serving as Vice-President of Sales. Throughout his career, he lived in both Michigan and Arkansas, where he also enjoyed his time as a Volunteer Firefighter. Chuck loved his computers as well as gardening and cooking. His hobbies included woodworking, hunting, and fishing. Survivors include his fiance, Valeria Tringale of Milan, Italy; children, Cory (Lisa) Groetzinger of Racine, Keri (Jerry) Gerhard of Caledonia, Jennifer Groetzinger of Racine, Jessica Groetzinger, and Derik Groetzinger, both of Mountain Home, Ark.; grandchildren, Courtney Gerhard, Jack Gerhard, and Sydney Groetzinger; sisters and brother, Randi (Terry) Young of Aspen, Colo., Katie (Keith) Kramer of Crystal Lake, Ill., Sarah Groetzinger, Amy (Don) Dienberg, both of Racine, and Eric Groetzinger of Ashville, Ore. Chuck is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Memorial services for Chuck will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, December 18, 2003, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Donald Johnson officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of services. William R. Vowell
William R. Vowell, 74, of fairfield Bay, Ark., passed away after a short illness Thursday, December 18, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Julie Vowell; his children, Karen Mager, Kathy, Vowell, David Vowell and Sarah Gates; his four granddaughters; and two great-great-grandchildren. Alice Wyckoff Thorne
Mrs. Alice Wyckoff Thorne, 93, passed away quietly at her son's home in Fairfield Bay, AR, on Sunday, December 14th. She is survived by two sons; Garret Thorne (Elizabeth Thorne) of Fairfield Bay, AR, and Peter Thorne (Linda Thorne) of Interlaken, NJ; and two grandchildren, Kelly Thorne and Shawn Thorne. Alice was the daughter of Fred and Daisy Wyckoff of Stroudsburg, PA, and was born in 1910. During the satellite age she used to tell people of the first time a car appeared on the streets of Stroudsburg and frightened all the horses and of the first time she looked up into the sky and saw a plane flying overhead. Graduating from Stroudsburg High School in a class of 10 she attended Drexel University where she met her future husband, Everett Thorne. They settled in New Jersey where the couple raised two children. Alice was a wonderfully caring and supportive mother and an active homemaker who liked to serve up shoo-fly pie for breakfast, bake pies for dinner and simmer baked beans on the stove all day. After the children were grown the couple made an annual pilgrimage to the Idaho/Wyoming area where they camped for a month where Everett fished and Alice collected rocks. They were attracted to Arkansas for many reasons and lived first in Dennard and then in Fairfield Bay after Everett's retirement. In their mid 60's, at an age when many people start cutting back on their activities, they developed an amazingly active, happy and productive lifestyle. They attended churches in the area, went to all the local dances where they danced all night, traveled to all the plays at Murray's Dinner Theater in Little Rock, went on week long retreats for spiritual growth or health concerns, continued to go to the Idaho area each year, traveled back east to 'visit the kids'; while Everett continued to play tennis several times a week with 'the girls'. Their health remained good well up into their 90's and Alice insisted on driving her car when she was in her late 80's making very determined use of the brake and gas pedals. In phone calls to her children, Alice's last words were always, "We're alright, we're doing fine." A memorial service, "Alice Thorne, A Celebration of a Life Well Lived", will be held at the Fairfield Bay Methodist Church at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 28th.
Goldie Marie Wright
Goldie Marie Wright, 79, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas passed away December 23, 2003. She was born June 17, 1924 in Prairie County, Arkansas. She was the daughter of the late Willie Maude Warner. She was a homemaker and member of Fairfield Bay Baptist Church. She was also preceded by a son, James Ray Cochran. (See additional preceded below.) Marie is survived by her husband of 53 years, Robert Wright of the home; sons, Jackie and Danny Cochran and a daughter, Opal Howell, all of Benton, AR; nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also survived by two sisters, Carolyn Burnett and Grace Barnman of Jacksonville, AR; brothers, Johnny Warner of Santa Paula, CA and Velma Warner of North Little Rock, AR; and a host of nieces and nephews. Others preceded were brother, Thomas Warner and sister, Glada Floyd. Funeral services will be at Fairfield Bay Baptist Church on Saturday, December 27, at 10 a.m. with Ronnie Waycaster officiating. Brady Galloway
Brady Lynn Galloway, 14, of Greers Ferry died December 28, 2003 at Baptist Health Center in Heber Springs. He was an eight grade student at West Side High School in Greers Ferry and a member of Faith Christian Church near Edgemont. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved animals and especially spending time and playing with his dog, Jo Jo. His friends commented that he never met a stranger. He always had a smile on his face and loved people. He would introduce himself to someone, strike up a conversation and before long know all about that person and most of the time, never forget their name. He is survived by his parents, Gary Lynn Galloway and Cindy Lynn Pilkington Galloway of Greers Ferry; one brother, Morgan Lynn Galloway of Greers Ferry; grandparents, Herb and Marie Pilkington of Greers Ferry; a great-grandmother, Mary Lou Smith of Weiner and many loved ones and friends. Funeral services were held December 30 at West Side Baptist Church in Greers Ferry with Bro. Bill Klahn, Bro. Dennis Knapp, Bro. Tommy Covington and Bro. Van Harness officiating. Interment followed in Everett Ridge cemetery near Prim. Pallbearers were his uncles. Honorary pallbearers were his high school classmates. Arrangements by Heber Springs Funeral Home.
Gary Richard McKay
Gary Richard McKay, 47 of Clinton passed away January 11, 2004.
Survivors include father Ernest, step-mother Pat, children Tiffany McKay and Teresa McKay, brothers Kenneth McKay & Andrew McKay, sisters Mary Phillips and Julie McKay, also four grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at the Roller McNutt Chapel with burial in the Colony cemetery.
