H. Fletcher Browne, Sr
H. Fletcher Browne, Sr., 85, of Longmont, Colorado, passed away peacefully with loved ones by his side on Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at Longmont United Hospital where he was being treated for respiratory problems. He will be missed by his son, Fletcher Jr.; daughter, Pat Browne and husband, Steve Masley; daughter, Georgiana Anderson and husband, Steve; four granddaughters, Chrissy, Stephaniey, Tiffany and Brittany Anderson; and his dog and best pal, Cuddles. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn (Katie) and two young children, Susan and Jimmy. Fletcher was born to H. Fletcher Browne (the 1st) and Marie J. Browne (later Weiners) in Chicago, Illinois, on May 13, 1918, and had a sister, Gloria (later Ohman). On his father's death, when he was only two years old, he went to live with his grandparents, Harry James Browne and Georgiana Fletcher Browne, as well as his aunts, uncles and six cousins who were more like sisters, Georgiana (later Hegard), Muriel (now Sustman), Lois (Berndt), Caryl (Kusen), Nancy (Piro) and Gloria (Coon). They spent their summers at the family cottage on Idylwild near Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, where he built much of the furniture from tree branches. They moved to Racine, Wisconsin, for his senior year in high school, where his shenanigans would (or maybe not!) surprise those who knew him later in life. Fletch enlisted in the Army Air Corps in World War II and was stationed at Scott Air Force Base in southern Illinois. During this time, he met his wife, then Kathryn Baird, at the USO in Belleville. His years in the war were spent as a radio operator as he 'flew the hump' between India, China and Burma. After the war, they raised their three children in Belleville, Illinois, where Fletcher nurtured his radio interests as a 'ham' (amateur) radio operator. Fletcher was a member of the Elk's Club, and he worked as a civil service engineer for the Army in St. Louis. His vacations were spent giving his family the time of their lives camping and fishing at Sam A. Baker State Park in the Ozarks. They retired to Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, where they spent leisure time 'floating and bobbing' around on their party boat on Greers Ferry Lake. Here Fletcher continued his love for woodworking by making things for his granddaughters. Since moving to Colorado in 1996, his love has been driving to Rocky Mountain National Park and looking for elk with his wife and son, and spending time with his granddaughters as well as hanging out with his dog and harassing his buddy, LeRoy. He and his son were known as 'The Fletchers' at many local restaurants and Fletcher Sr. was the 'Honorary Mayor' of Flanagan's Pub in Niwot, where he enjoyed the camaraderie in spite of the fact that his health didn't allow him to drink. Fletcher attended Westview Presbyterian Church but more recently had been attending Rocky Mountain Christian Church, where services will be held on Monday, January 12, at 1 p.m. Visitation will be held at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, January 11, with family members present. He will always be in our hearts and loved and missed very much.
William D. (Bill) Draper II
William D. (Bill) Draper II, 60, of 135 Hillview Drive, #117, in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas passed away Saturday evening, January 17, 2004. He was originally from Bloomington/Normal, Illinois. He retired from Northern Illinois Gas Company. Bill was President of Lakewood Hills Condominium Association in Fairfield Bay from 2002 until present. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and sportsman. He loved life and was loved by everyone who knew him. He leaves his devoted wife, Nancy, of 29 years; a son, William (Lanette) Draper, of Bloomington, Illinois; four daughters, Diea Anderson of Normal, Illinois, Jody Draper of Bloomington, Illinois, Kim (Curt) Kapp of Trenton, Illinois and Katie Jolliff of Lombard, Illinois; two sisters, Ann Conklin of Venice, Florida and Karen Alexander of Bloomington/Normal, Illinois and six grandchildren. The family is extremely grateful for the care and concern the doctors and nurses at Conway Regional gave to Bill. Lisa Ann James
Lisa Ann James died suddenly and unexpectedly on January 12, 2004, in Pontiac, Michigan. She was 43 years old and the youngest daughter of Don James of Fairfield Bay. She had lived in Michigan for the past 20 years, but was raised in Corning, Arkansas. While in Michigan, Lisa's most recent employment was as a secretary with Adams Cleaners in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Her family presented a beautiful memorial in her honor in their hometown of Corning, Arkansas. The service was conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2004, with Ermert Funeral Home officiating. Lisa is survived by her fiance, Tom Adams, and his son, Chad, of Lake Orion, Michigan. She is also survived by her parents, Don and Jewel James of Fairfield Bay, and Richard and Sharon DuBois of Mountain Grove, Missouri; her brother and family, Britt, Sherrie, Chris, Matt and Lauren James of Fayetteville, Arkansas; her sister and family, Joni, Alan and Cameron Ragsdale of Kingsport, Tennessee. Other family members include her step-sister, Amy Higdon, and three step-brothers, Stephen, Scott and Daniel Babb. Lisa was an energetic person who loved life and enjoyed her family and their time together. She will be missed by those who loved her.
Joan E. Bryant
Joan E. Bryant passed away at home here in Fairfield Bay on Sunday morning, January 25th. She was born in Greencastle, Indiana on November 6, 1924. She was a war bride, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and a friend. She attended schools in Terre Haute, Indiana and also attended Indiana State University. She was a fifty year member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Preceding her in death were sons Steven and Peter. Surviving are E. Lee Bryant, husband of fifty nine years, daughter Jane Ann Swenson, daughter-in-law Karen Bryant of Ohio, grandchildren Kaleb Swenson, Molly McCoy of Kentucky and Tamara Pillard of Michigan. Seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Fairfield Bay United Methodist Church. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. on January 28th, at Woodland Memorial.
Dorrie Notestein Swan
Dorrie Notestein Swan, 82, of FairfieldBay, died Wednesday evening, January 21, 2004, at Baptist Medical Health Center in Little Rock, after a long and valiant fight against respiratory disease. Dorrie was born in 1921 to Frederick and Famah Jeffrey Ernst of Geneseo, Illinois. During her high school career, Dorrie was an honors student and editor of her high school paper, She graduated from Geneseo High School in 1939. She met her first husband, Robert Bruce Notestein, at Blackburn College, in Carlinville, Illinois. In 1945, she graduated from the 5-year public health nursing degree program at the University of Minnesota. She and Robert Bruce Notestein married
on March 6, 1944. After the war ended in 1945, they moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where her husband completed his Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Wisconsin. Before his death in 1983, her husband was Chairman of the Sociology and Anthropology Departments at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Albion College, in Albion, Michigan. They have three surviving children: Mary Elizabeth and Barbara of Milwaukee Wisconsin, and Anne (Leigh Orf) of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Dorrie has one grandson, Brendan Robert Bruce; he has brought her much joy and happiness. After the death of her first husband, Dorrie married
Charles Lundeen Swan, professor emeritus of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, in 1986. Dorrie and Charlie traveled to India and Spain for their honeymoon. In December, 1987, they moved to Fairfield Bay. In 1990, Dorrie and Bobbie Boelter, formerly of Fairfield Bay, were instrumental in organizing the first chapter of the Fairfield Bay League of Women Voters Dorrie served as president in 1993 and l994 and later served as committee chair of the program committee. She was also active in the AARP, chapter 2850; she served as legislative chair. As Dorrie's health worsened and she became increasingly dependent on oxygen, she continued to be active in local, county, state, and national political activities. She continued her involvement in the North Central Arkansas Foundation for the Arts and Education and the Arkansas Coalition for Choice. Dorrie, her husband Charles, and former Mayor Paul Mueller, tirelessly lobbied to build the Fairfield Bay Senior Center for the community. At the time of her death, Dorrie was still active in the Van Buren Country Democratic Party and was a member of the Advisory Board of the Fairfield Bay Senior Center. In spring, 2003, Dorrie joyfully attended the "Topping Out" party for President Bill Clinton's Library in Little Rock. Dorrie lived her life with a shining radiance; she ceaselessly worked to make the world a gentler and more humane place. She passionately believed in the power and opportunity of education, tirelessly working to be an informed and active citizen of her community, state, and nation. Dorrie was preceded in death by her sister Eunice Huerta of Llano, Texas and her half-sister Aleta Dean of Geneseo, Illinois. She is survived by her loving sister Wilma Gawrysiak (Ken), Milwaukee, and her half-siblings Arlys Koepping (Kurt) of Hillsdale, and Allen (Pat) of Geneseo, Illinois. Dorrie is further survived by her nieces and nephews: Suzanne Strickland, Rick Huerta, David Huerta, Cynthia Brown, (Bob), and Mona (Michael) Rood, and Bill and Frank Caruth. She is further survived by one great-niece, six great -nephews, and one great-great niece. Dorrie's Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2004, at 10 a.m. at the Fairfield Bay Senior Center.
Mrs. Evelyn L. McDonald
Mrs. Evelyn L. McDonald, age 83, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, passed away Friday, January 30, 2004, at Indian Rock Village Nursing Center in Fairfield Bay. Born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on January 17, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Bernhardt and Elanor (Williams) Ludewig. A resident of Fairfield Bay for twenty-eight years, Mrs. McDonald was a homemaker and a member of the Fairfield Bay Quilting Society. Her religious belief was Episcopal. She was preceded in death by her husband, Evan D. McDonald, who passed away on March 10, 1984. Mrs. McDonald is survived by one brother, Bill Ludewig of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, other relatives and her many friends. Graveside services for Mrs. McDonald will be held Sunday, Feb. 1, at 2:00 P.M. at Woodland Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Ray Miller
Mrs. Ray Miller, age 65, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at Conway Regional Medical Center in Conway, Arkansas. Born in New York state on April 17, 1938, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary (Giglio) Laurentino. Mrs. Miller had been a resident of Fairfield Bay since December of 2001, and she was a former resident of Los Angeles, California. She was a retired office manager for a heating and air conditioning business. Mrs. Miller was also an artist and enjoyed painting and drawing. She was a Christian. She is survived by her husband, Stan Miller of Fairfield Bay, AR, two sons, Glenn Dean of Middlebury, Connecticut and Gregg Dean of California, one daughter, Denis Ravet of Connecticut, two stepdaughters, Angela Barbaree of Hope, AR, and Kim Kerr of Bloomsfield, Colorado, one brother, Vincent Laurentino one sister, Jo Ann Diaferia, both of New York, and six step grandchildren, Trent Kerr, Jonathan Barbaree, Steffani Kerr, Alec Kerr, Joshua Barbaree, and Haley Kerr. Mrs. Miller is also survived by other relatives and her many friends. Visitation will be held Sunday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m. at the Woodland Memorial Park Chapel with funeral services beginning at 2:00 P.M. Rev. Eric Barbaree and Pastor Robert Hadley will be officiating the service. Interment will follow at Woodland Memorial Park. Gregg Dean, Glenn Dean, Jonathan Barbaree, Joshua Barbaree, and Eric Barbaree will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Dr. Harriet E. Yingling
Dr. Harriet E. Yingling, 93, of Fairfield Bay, died Sunday, February 1, 2004 at St. Andrews nursing home in Conway, Arkansas. Harriet was born in 1910 to Ray and Kate Yingling of Muscatine, Iowa. She received her BS and MS degrees in Physical Education from the University of Iowa and Phd from New York University. She retired as the Dean of Women's Physical Education at E. Illinois University in Charleston Illinois in 1976 and moved to Fairfield Bay shortly after. Harriet was a member of St. Francis od Assisi Catholic Church. She was preceeded by her parents, two brothers and two sisters. Sole survivor is a nephew, Robert C. Yingling, of Fairfield Bay and E. Palatka, Florida. Cremation was handled by Roller-McNutt Funeral Home of Clinton and no services were held by request.
Col. James A. Payne, Jr
Col. James A. Payne, Jr., age 76, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, passed away Sunday, February 8, 2004, at the Indian Rock Village Nursing Home in Fairfield Bay. Born in Belleville, Arkansas, on February 8, 1928, he was the son of the late James Arthur Payne, Sr. and Chloe (Grace) Payne. Mr. Payne retired from the United States Army with the rank of Colonel. He had been a resident of Fairfield Bay for twenty-two years, and he attended First Baptist Church of Fairfield Bay. Mr. Payne was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Marcella Huggler, and one brother, John Wylie Payne. Survivors include: his wife, Jo (McGlathery) Payne of Fairfield Bay, AR, one daughter, Kelley Fielder and her husband, Tom, of Lynchburg, Virginia, one sister, Dixie Lou Reed of Dallas, Texas, and two granddaughters, Sarah Elizabeth and Jaimie Marie. Mr. Payne is also survived by other relatives and his many friends. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 4:00-6:00 P.M. at Woodland Memorial Park Chapel. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 12, at 11:00 A.M. at the Fairfield Bay First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Woodland Memorial Park. Lillian Wilson Marsh
Lillian Wilson Marsh, daughter of the late Carl E. and Sarah M. (Clark) Wells, passed away Friday, February 11, 2004 at her home in Shirley, Arkansas.Born on January 11, 1913 at Des Arc, Arkansas, she was 91 years of age. She was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother and she was of the Baptist faith. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Max Wilson and Thomas Marsh. Survivors are: a daughter, Phyllis Carter of Shirley, Arkansas, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.Visitation was held Monday, February 9, 2004 at the Faith Christian Church in Edgemeont, Arkansas. Services were Tuesday at 11 a.m. also at the Faith Lutheran Church with Pastor Bill Kalhn officiating. Internment followed at the Augusta Memorial Park, Augusta, AR. Funeral arrangements were made by Olmstead Funeral Home Inc. in Heber Springs, AR.
Arthur "Scottie" Michaelson
Arthur "Scottie" Michaelson, 85, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas passed away February 6, 2004. He was born April 9, 1918 in Balboa, Panama, the son of the late Fedor & Consuela Cross Michealson. Scottie was a Construction Engineer and member of the Lutheran Church. He was survived by his wife Virginia of the home, a son Russell Scott Michaelson of Newborn, North Carolina, a daughter Joya Bocock of Honduras, also five grandchildren and six brother and sisters. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. on February 10, 2004 at the Peace Lutheran Church. James Alvin Johnsen
James Alvin Johnsen, 69, passed away at home on February 11 with his loved ones around him. Jim was born March 27, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, and was a graduate of DePaul Academy and Illinois Institute of Technology. He had a long and successful career at Teletype Corporation and AT&T Bell Laboratories and retired to Fairfield Bay, AR, with his wife Judy in 1992. Jim enjoyed contributing to his community, traveling, and spending time with his family ' he took great joy in his grandchildren. In Illinois, he and his family provided foster care in their home for twenty-five years, and Jim was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, scouting, and midget football. He helped many is his Fairfield Bay community as a volunteer First Responder for the Rescue Squad, served for six years on the Fairfield Bay Community Club Board and was an active member of the Fairfield Bay Lions Club. He is survived by his wife, Judy; brother, Ron Johnsen (Gail); and five children, Matt (Nancy), Jennifer Roennau, Gabrielle (Amy Brantley), Paul (Keri Stika), and Michael (Catalina). He also leaves eight grandchildren, Brandi, Pauli, Timothy, Andrew, Maria, Jimmy, Becca, and Alexandria and has been blessed with many wonderful friends. Memorials may be made to the Fairfield Bay Lions Club or the Fairfield Bay Rescue Squad. Memorial services will be held later. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. in Heber Springs.
Mr. Bruce Eugene Wells
Mr. Bruce Eugene Wells, age 69, of Higden, Arkansas, passed away at his home on Tuesday, February 10, 2004. Born in Crane, Texas, on November 9, 1934, he was the son of the late Bruce and Ray (Swafford) Wells. Mr. Wells was an independent oil driller and the owner of B. E. Wells Service in Colorado. He had been a resident of Fairfield Bay since 1999 and had recently moved to Higden. Mr. Wells was an antique collector and a coin collector. He was a member of the Jaycees in Colorado. His religious belief was Methodist. Survivors include four daughters, Nakina Gray and her husband, Arlis, of Fairfield Bay, AR, Darcy Allen of Dinosaur, Colorado, Angie Innes and her husband, Keith, of Midland, Texas, and Melissa Ward and her husband, Rick, of Fairfield Bay, AR, two sisters, Norma Arnold of Odessa, Texas, and Sherra Nell Titus of Longview, Texas ten grandchildren, Chris Wells, Nicole Bates, Farra Edwards, Natalie Allen, Bo Allen, Joshua Allen, Jason Innes, Jessica Innes, Cassie Ward, and Cory Ward and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Wells is also survived by other relatives and his many friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, at 11:00 a.m. in the Olmstead Chapel with Rev. Adam Edwards officiating. Wayne Leary
Wayne Leary of Fairfield Bay, AR formerly of Germantown, WI died March 5, 2004. He was born in Wells, MN on June 21, 1922 and was the eldest child of James and Freda Leary. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother James, a sister Anna Marie and a daughter Katie (David) Michuda. He is survived by his wife Helen (Bradley of LaCrosse, WI) whom he married
in 1945, and three children, Patrick (Melinda) Leary, Devon (Robert) Spiegel, and Mary Jo (Ken) Zimmerly. He is also survived by ten grandchildren. He was a World War II veteran and served as a pilot in the U.S. Navy. Wayne was a member of St. Francis Assis Parish and served on the parish council and as an usher. He was also a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. After service in the Navy Wayne began a 40 year career in the graphic arts. He retired an Executive Vice President of the Fox Lithograph Co. in Milwaukee, WI in 1987 and moved to Fairfield Bay, AR in 1989. He and his wife traveled extensively in the lower U.S. and made three trips to Britain and Europe. Wayne was past president of several graphic arts groups in Milwaukee, WI and also past president of the National Association of Lithography Clubs.
Phillip Dean Grace
Phillip Dean Grace, age 48, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Heber Springs. Born October 5, 1955, at Chillicothe, Missouri, he was the son of Orville and Mildred (Bentley) Grace. Phillip was married
to the former Diana Maria Turner in 1974. He had recently moved to Heber Springs and was a former resident of Fairfield Bay. Phillip was an advertising sales representative for Crane Media, and he had served as a minister until 1997. Phillip attended the First Assembly of God Church in Heber Springs. He is survived by his wife, Diana Maria (Turner) Grace of Heber Springs, AR, one son, Phillip Grace, II, of Heber Springs, AR, his parents, Orville and Mildred Grace of Lubbock, Texas, one brother, Stephen Grace and his wife, Louetta of Gracemont, Oklahoma, and one sister, Esther Hutzell and her husband, Len, of Corpus Christi, Texas. Phillip is also survived by other relatives and his many friends. Visitation will be held at the family's home at 409 Hill Crest in Heber Springs, on Saturday, March 6, from 5:00-8:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 7, at 2:00 P.M. in the First Assembly of God Church in Heber Springs with Rev. Lee Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Heber Springs cemetery. Ralph E. (Scotty) Robb
Ralph E. (Scotty) Robb, United States Air Force Lt. Col. (Retired), died surrounded by family in his Edgemont, Arkansas home on March 13, 2004. Scotty was born January 22, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois to Ralph E. Robb, Sr. and Belle (Monsen) Robb. He was preceded in death by both his parents and brother, Don Robb. He enlisted in the service at 18 and within seven years reached the rank of M/Sgt. at a remarkably young age of 25. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. out of Officer Candidate School and went on to Pilot Training. Among numerous other planes, he first piloted the C-119. He specialized in the C-130 aircraft, actually starting as a test pilot for the new experimental C-130 in the 1950's. He advanced to Base Maintenance Officer for C-130's at Seward AFB, Tennessee. He was the Director of Secret Military Missions at Naha AFB, Okinawa; supported the Astronaut Program at Patrick AFB, Florida, flying pontoon equipped C-130's; flew low-level C-130 Gunship missions out of Southeast Asia (several years) during the Viet Nam War, and later served at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, flying specially equipped ski C-130's designed for ice landings. He had 29 years of honorable military service, earning numerous special awards - the most prominent being the Distinguished Flying Cross, before retiring at Little Rock Air Force Base in 1974. A second career in real estate, starting in sales at Fairfield Bay led to his becoming a real estate broker in the town of Greers Ferry. He was active in many community services including the Optimist Club and Special Olympics. His interests included first and foremost his family, woodworking, photography and an intense passion for golf. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sue of Edgemont; three children - sons Michael of Dallas, Texas, Steven and his wife Kay of Lawrenceville, Georgia and daughter Kristin Jones and her husband Ken of Little Rock; five grandchildren 'Jay and Laurie Robb, Josh Fitch, Ryan and Robyn Jones; two great grandsons; his brother John Robb and wife Nancy of Fruita, Colorado; a host of dear cousins; and an extended family of literally hundreds of long-term friends spread world wide. He was a member of Holiday Hills United Methodist Church in Greers Ferry. A Memorial Service will be held there Thursday, March 18th at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to his church or Hospice Care of Cleburne County.
