Bessie Bare

PIGGOTT -- Bessie Bare, 92, of Piggott, died Jan. 20, 2006.

She was a member of the Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; a sister; brother; and great-grandson.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Robinson of Hemet, Calif.; a granddaughter, Diane Cowley of Omaha, Neb.; a great-granddaughter, Rhonda Kelly of Tomball, Texas; three great-great-grandchildren,

Christina and Heather Kelly and Christopher Monroe; and other friends and relatives.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today in Hoggard & Sons Chapel. Charles Carrens will officiate. Burial will follow in Piggott Cemetery.

Estell Edna Bell

JONESBORO -- Estell Edna Bell, 92, of Jonesboro, formerly of Caraway, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at Jonesboro Healthcare Center. She was a homemaker and a member of Buffalo Chapel Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters-in-law, Sue Bell of Jonesboro and Winona Bell of Eudora; two sisters, Adna Taylor of Leachville and Willie Collier of Caraway; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Bell; two sons, Bill Bell and C.J. Bell; her parents, William and Emmie Wells Boyd; five sisters; one brother; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Gregg Funeral Home Chapel in Monette, with the Rev. Tom Doty officiating. Burial will follow in Monette Memorial Cemetery.

Honored to serve as active pallbearers are Steve Hodge, Hatton Weeks, Troy Case, Meredith Collier, Tony Collier and Harvey Faulkner; and as honorary pallbearers, N. Mark Bell, Cody Willoughby, Mark Willis and employees of Jonesboro Healthcare Center.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Lovis Clarisa Downing

HOXIE -- Lovis Clarisa Downing, 93, of Hoxie passed away Monday morning, Jan. 23, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born Sept. 12, 1912, in Imboden, she was the daughter of L.C. and Susan Ellen Moore Howell. A member of a pioneer Lawrence County family, Mrs. Downing grew up on a Spring River farm deeded to an ancestor for service with Col. Imboden in the Spanish-American War in 1849.

She was a longtime owner and operator of the Flower Basket in Walnut Ridge, retiring at the age of 79. She also operated Downing's Ice Cream Factory in Lawrence County, which she later sold to Yarnell's in Searcy in the late 1950s. With her father-in-law, Terrell Henry Downing, she ran Downing's Ice Cream Parlor and Grocery from the mid-1930s until the early 1950s.

An active member of Hoxie United Methodist Church and Hoxie Hooking Club, Mrs. Downing was a volunteer in church and civic activities.

Mrs. Downing was united in marriage to Allen Brooks Downing Oct. 31, 1938. He preceded her in death Feb. 13, 1964. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Lenore Charles and Susan Ellen Howell; three brothers; and three sisters.

Mrs. Downing is survived by a son, Terrell Henry Downing II of Hoxie; two daughters, Dr. Frances Hunter and Dr. Suzanne Gibbard, both of Jonesboro; nine grandchildren, Kyle Downing of Fayetteville, Amy West, Jason Willett, Mile Deloache and Scott Hunter Jr., all of Jonesboro, Felicia Willett and David Gibbard, both of Memphis, Lisa Melton of Houston and Kelley Pillizzi of Libertyville, Ill.; six great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hoxie United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Donald Lewart officiating.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Bryan Funeral Home.

Billie Langston Ellison

LUXORA -- Billie Langston Ellison, 82, of Luxora died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, in Jonesboro.

Born July 20, 1923, in Memphis, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Langston and the widow of Leonard Ellison. She was a member of Blytheville First United Methodist Church and a graduate of Luxora High School, William Woods College and the University of Arkansas, where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Roller-Swift Funeral Home in Osceola. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Mississippi County Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Pamela Estes officiating.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice, or St. Bernard's Hospice.

Mollie E. Massey Farmer

LITTLE ROCK -- Mollie E. Massey Farmer, 96, of Little Rock, formerly of the Newport area, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at 6:10 a.m.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, James. S. Farmer.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Vietta and Winston Metheny; two sisters-in-law, Madeline Massey and Hazel Farmer; four grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from noon-2 p.m. today, followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. at Jackson's Newport Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will be in Holloway Cemetery.

Hazel Lorene Hardin

TRUMANN -- Mrs. Hazel Lorene Hardin, 86, of Trumann died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at St. Bernard's Medical Center in Jonesboro.

Born in Covington, Tenn., she had lived in Trumann for the past 50 years and was formerly of Tennessee. She was a retired employee of the Singer Company and a member of First Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Willford "Tennessee" Hardin, four sisters, one brother and was the daughter of the late William Sanford and Lucinda Elizabeth Mashburn Mix.

Survivors include two daughters, Janie Hayes of Trumann and Judy Epps of Jonesboro; two sisters, Beatrice Short and Inez Hardin both of Covington, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren..

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning at First Christian Church in Trumann, with the Revs. Leonard Harp and Chad Epps officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Sanders McKee, Bobby Bennett, Joe Epps and Ronnie Harrison.

Christine Mason Hatley

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Christine Mason Hatley, 79, a long-time resident of San Jose, Calif., passed away on Jan. 21, 2006, in San Jose.

She was born July 31, 1926, in Hickoria, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Mason. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Calvin Hatley; one son, Alan Hatley; one daughter, Carolyn and her husband, Sam Burton; three grandsons, Matthew Hatley, Dan Burton, and Scott Burton; two sisters, Geraldine Slayton of Pocahontas, and Jaqueline Pogue of Piggott; sister-in-law, Carolyn Mason of Knobel; brother-in-law, James Hatley and wife, Wanda, of Orlando; sister-in-law, Nita Cox and husband, Gene, of St. Louis; brother-in-law, Euell Hatley of Maynard; sister-in-law, Ann Murray and husband, Aubrey, of St. Louis; sister-in-law, Bernita Baird and husband, Bud, of St. Louis; sister-in-law, Bonnie Ford of Pocahontas; brother-in-law, Carl Hatley of Corning; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Mason; three brothers, C.R. Mason, Jeff Mason, and Thad Mason; a great-niece, Peyton Lytle; sister-in-law, Colleen Carruthers; two nephews, Jerry Walden and Mike Walden; and her father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H. Hatley.

Christine was baptised into the Methodist Church in Knobel as a young woman. She was a homemaker and a teacher. She earned her BSE degree in elementary education from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro in 1951, and took several continuing education courses while teaching in the San Jose schools. She began her teaching career in Knobel at age 17 and taught in Boydsville, Memphis, Livonia, Mich., and San Jose, Calif. She held a lifetime teaching certificate. She enjoyed working in her yard, but she was happiest when surrounded by her family.

Visitation and funeral services will be held Jan. 28, at Ermert Funeral home in Corning.

Visitation will be from noon-2 p.m., with services beginning at 2 p.m. in the chapel, with the Rev. Charles Carrens officiating. Burial will follow in the Pirtle Cemetery in Peach Orchard.

Billy Joe Hutton

KENNETT, Mo. -- Billy Joe Hutton, age 83, of Kennett, Mo., died Sunday at Senath Nursing Center in Senath, Mo.

Born at Manila, he was the son of the late William Joseph and Mary Jewell Wright Hutton. He was the valedictorian of the 1940 graduating class of Manila High School and later received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Arkansas.

Mr. Hutton was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served in the 329th Army Air Force Base Unit as an aerial gunner on a B-24 Liberator. He received many decorations and citations. His service included battles in the Nothern Solomans, central Pacific, Bismarck Archipelago, New Guinea, the eastern Madates and Western Pacific. He received the U.S. Air Medal with one silver oak leaf cluster and three bronze oak leaf clusters. He also received the Distinguished Unit Badge with one silver service star and one bronze service star.

Mr. Hutton was a retired farmer and had been a resident of Kennett for the past 40 years. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Manila and had also attended First United Methodist Church in Kennett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joey Hutton, in 1998.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Meacham Hutton of the home; three sons, Vaughn Hutton of Marion, Rand Hutton of Jonesboro and Mark Hutton of Blytheville; six grandchildren, Jennifer Marie Hutton, Joshua Hutton, Morgan Marie Hutton, Molly Hutton, Katie Hutton and Nathan Hutton; and one sister-in-law, Loraine Hutton of Manila.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Manila, with the Revs. Gary Carter and Stephen Waggoner officiating. Burial will follow in Manila Cemetery under the direction of Howard Funeral Service of Manila.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Tommy Towles, Bobby Nowlin, Toby Bunch, Glenn Kitchens, R.A. Davidson and Joshua Hutton.

Richard Clay Miller

MONETTE -- Richard Miller, 72, the son of the late Thomas Clay and Goldie Marie Stacey Miller, died Sunday.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Michelle Miller of Monette, and Scott and Miscy Miller of Searcy; a daughter, Vicki Miller of Trumann; and grandchildren, Terry 'T.J.' Miller Jr. and Courtney Miller, both of Monette.

Services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Assembly of God Church in Pocahontas, with C.C. Hodges and Lynn Ables officiating, with interment in Masonic Cemetery.

Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. tonight at McNabb's.
