Lois Charlene Long

MANILA -- Lois Charlene Long, age 77, of Manila, widow of Mr. A.J. Long, died Friday at St. Bernard's Medical Center in Jonesboro.

Born at Holland, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Seth and Maggie Idora Andrews Herrington and had been a Manila resident for most of her life. She was retired from Frolic Footwear in Monette and was a member of the New Harmony Baptist Church near Manila.

She is survived by five daughters, Brenda Wool-dridge of Cave City, Sharon Spray of Caraway, Linda Cole of Manila, Tina Foley of Lake City, and Francis Key of Manila; six brothers, Neal Herrington of Ward, Bob Herrington of Campbell Station, David Herrington of Mount Pleasant, Charles Herrington of St. Charles, Mo., and Jerry Herrington and Roger Herrington, both of Evening Shade; two sisters, Geraldine Summers of Indiana and Gracie Lawrence of Marmaduke; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Howard Funeral Service Chapel in Manila, with the Rev. Craig Stull officiating. Burial will follow in Manila Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8:30 Monday evening at the funeral home.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Robert Shumate, Anthony Petty, Keith Accord, Lloyd Johnson, Wayne McCoy, and Thomas Smith.

Edith McLean

KEISER -- Mrs. Edith McLean, 90, of Keiser died Thursday Feb. 2, 2006, at her home.

Born Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1915, in Judsonia to Albert and Alta Mae Scudder, she enjoyed being a homemaker and spending time with her family, reading, "was an outstanding cook," and remained very active until she broke her hip and suffered a stroke in 2003. Her family lovingly cared for her at home until she went to be with her Lord. She was a member of Keiser Church of Christ.

She is survived by five sons, Bobby McLean and wife Martriess of Lakeland, Fla., Bill McLean of Keiser, Gary McLean and wife Reba of El Sobrante, Calif., Johnny McLean and wife Barbara of Keiser, and Danny McLean and wife Susie of Marion; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 52 years, Rodney McLean; one son, Mickey McLean; three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be held from noon-9 p.m. today at Keiser Church of Christ. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Roller-Swift Chapel, with Bro. Wil Sadler officiating. Burial will be in Mississippi County Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Keiser Church of Christ or donor's choice.

Arrangements are being handled by Roller-Swift Funeral Home, Highway 61 South, P.O. Box 563, Osceola, Ark.

John Henry Oxner

CORNING -- John Henry Oxner, 88, of Corning died Feb. 3, 2006.

He was a farmer and a member of Shiloh Clay Baptist Church.

He was united in marriage to Mildren Blankenship Oxner on Dec. 26, 1936. She preceded him in death July 25, 2002.

Survivors include one son, William Oxner of Corning; two daughters, Carolyn Wilson of Corning and Mary Clark of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6-8 this evening at Ermert Funeral Home in Corning.

Funeral services will be at 2 Sunday afternoon in Ermert Funeral Home Chapel. Interment to follow in Richwoods Cemetery in Corning.

Robert Lewis Pierce

LEACHVILLE -- Robert Lewis Pierce, age 85, of Leachville died Thursday at St. Bernard's Medical Center in Jonesboro.

Born in Hornersville, Mo., he was the son of the late Lewis Christopher and India Mae Ellis Pierce and had been a longtime Leachville area resident. Mr. Pierce was a prominent area farmer and landowner and had served with the Leachville Housing Authority as one of the founding commissioners since 1963. He was a member of the Goodfellows and the Democratic Committee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Pierce.

His survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eloise Bernice Turner Pierce of Leachville; two daughters, Beth Pierce Pool and son-in-law, Jim Pool, of Sherwood, and Anita Gale Pierce of Leachville; one brother and sister-in-law, Jean E. Pierce and Jean Pierce of Leachville; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn Pierce; and one sister and brother-in-law, Frances Pierce Jones and Leo Jones of St. Peters, Mo. He also leaves two grandchildren, Lauren Pool and Nichole Pool, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Howard Funeral Chapel in Leachville with Bro. Jimmy Young officiating. Burial will follow in Leachville Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors from 10 a.m. Monday until service time at the funeral home.

The family prefers memorials be made to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock.

Harry Lee Ponder Jr.

WALNUT RIDGE -- Harry Lee Ponder Jr., age 94, of Walnut Ridge died on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006. The son of Harry Lee Ponder and Clyde Gant Ponder, he was born on Feb. 19, 1911, in Walnut Ridge. He was the grandson of Walnut Ridge's founder, Col. Willis Miles Ponder.

He attended Arkansas College (now Lyon College) for two years and graduated with a law degree from the University of Arkansas. His law practice extended from 1934 until his retirement in 1998. He served three terms as prosecuting attorney and more than a decade as municipal judge.

An elder in the Presbyterian Church, he served the community and the state in many ways. He was an original member of the state Board of Higher Education, a member of the Lawrence County Library Board, president of the Chamber of Commerce and a leader in the local Democratic party. He was also an avid bird hunter and an inveterate raconteur.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Marianne Parish Ponder; a sister, Nancy Ponder Moore; and by two brothers, Lester Ponder and Andrew Ponder. He is survived by a daughter, Marianne Ponder Snapp of Walnut Ridge; a son, Harry Lee Ponder III of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren, James Russell Snapp Jr. of Siloam Springs, Marianne Snapp Ditto of Vicenza, Italy, Susan Ponder Snapp O'Connor of Smithville, Katherine Ponder Pennington of near Yokohama, Japan, and Claire Ponder Selib of Washington, D.C.; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A service in thanksgiving for his life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut Ridge at 2 p.m. today.

Willie Lee Stout

TUCKERMAN -- Willie Lee Stout, 76, of Tuckerman died Thursday.

He was preceded in death by one son, Terry Stout; his parents; three brothers, Tom Sexton, Homer Stout, and Melsin Stout; and a sister, Celeste Eno.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva Reed Stout of Tuckerman; sons, Gary Stout, James Stout, and Dennis Stout; daughters, Carolyn Babb and Janette Stout; daughter-in-law, Cindy Stout; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today at Jackson's Newport Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in Gracelawn Cemetery.

Loyd Benson

PIGGOTT -- Loyd Benson, 78, of Piggott died Saturday, Feb. 4, at Piggott Community Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Ann Victor; his parents, Loyd and Opal Irby Benson; and a brother, Velus Benson.

Survivors include a daughter, Dawn Benson of California; a son, Jeff Benson of Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today in Mitchell Cemetery in Greenway.

William M. Davis

LEACHVILLE -- Mr. William M. Davis, 91, of Leachville died Feb. 5, 2006, at his residence.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Gregg Funeral Home of Monette.

Kenneth Brent Gibson

BONO -- Kenneth Brent Gibson, 45, of Bono, died Saturday in a car-train accident at Paul Switch near Bono.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Emerson Funeral Home.

Bessie May Holmes

JONESBORO -- Bessie May Holmes, 97, of Jonesboro, died Saturday morning at St. Elizabeth's Place in Jonesboro.

Born in Water Valley, Miss., Mrs. Holmes lived in Chicago before moving to the Jonesboro area several years ago. She was a member of Lake City Pentecostal Church and was retired from General Electric.

Mrs. Holmes was preceded in death by two husbands, Johnny Hall and Charles Holmes; and by two sons, Walter Hall and Billy John Hall.

Survivors include three sons and Daughter-in-law, Wayne and Kathy Hall of Jonesboro, and David Holmes and Chuck Holmes, both of Michigan; three daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Harold Olsen of Martin, Tenn., Wilma and Harold Davis of Markerville, Ind., and Mary Lemieux of Michigan; one brother, Marvin Welburn of Water Valley; 20 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 Wednesday morning at Emerson Memorial Chapel in Jonesboro, with the Rev. Harold Anderson and the Rev. Larry Owens officiating. Burial will follow in Manila Cemetery.

Active pallbearers include Doug Davis, Michael Barnes, Donnie Pendergrass, Jerry Beshiers, Buz Turner and Bill Pierce.
