Jack Mitchell Davis

Jack Mitchell Davis, age 89, of Pine Bluff, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2003, at the University of Arkansas Medical Services, Little Rock.
Jack was born July 23, 1913 a son of the late Thomas Davis and Bonnie Burnett Davis St. Clair in Paragould, Arkansas. He was reared and educated in Pine Bluff. Jack married May Francis O'Cain on September 8, 1935 in Pine Bluff. She preceded him in death in December 2000. Mr. Davis worked as a conductor at the Cotton Belt Railroad. They were members of the Greenlee Baptist Church.
Mr. Davis is survived by one son, John Davis of Pine Bluff; two daughters, Martha Ellan Norman of Bossier City, Louisiana and Nancy Norman of White Hall, Arkansas; one sister, Martha Roop of Pine Bluff; nine (9) grandchildren; nine (9) great-grandchildren and one (1) great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas David Davis and Charles Davis.
Services will be held Saturday, February 22, 2003, at 3:00 PM at the Chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son Funeral Directors. Visitation will be Saturday, 1-3 PM at the funeral home. The Reverend Adam Hughes will officiate. Burial will be private at Fitzhugh Cemetery, Pine Bluff.
Henrietta Rutstein Levine

Henrietta Rutstein Levine, 93, of Pine Bluff, died Tuesday, November 6, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Levine was born July 27, 1908 in Pine Bluff, daughter of the late Henry and Annie Rutstein. When Mrs. Levine was three, her biological mother died prematurely and she was reared by her step-mother, Mary Rutstein.
Mrs. Levine was a life-long resident of Pine Bluff, having graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1928.
In 1930, she married Jake Levine in Pine Bluff. Mrs. Levine was a homemaker and helped with the operation of her husband's clothing business, Jake Levine's Men's Store. Mrs. Levine helped establish the thrift shop that was in the former Davis Hospital, and also helped establish the gift shop at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
She was a member of the Temple Anshe Emeth, where she was a member of the Temple of Sisterhood, and the Board of Directors. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
Her survivors include one son, M. H. Levine of Pine Bluff, four grandchildren, and one cousin, Bobby Baim Simpson, Pine Bluff.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jake Levine, who passed away August 1, 1973 in Pine Bluff, two sisters, Sara Daiches, Adele Daiches.
Funeral Services will be Friday at 2:30 P.M., Graveside by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors, at the Jewish Cemetery
with Rabbi Deborah Wright officiating.
The family has requested that memorials take the form of contributions to Neighbor to Neighbor, 1419 Pine Street, Pine Bluff, Arkansas 71601, or to the donor's favorite charity.
Eddie Ray Bryan

Eddie Ray Bryan, 60, of Pine Bluff, died at home Monday, March 3, 2003. Eddie was born February 5, 1943, in Dyersburg, Tennessee, a son of the late Paul and Elease Lanier Bryan. He graduated from Dyersburg High School in 1961. That same year he began a twenty-year career with Sherwin Williams Paint Company. In 1981 he opened his own business, Bryan Paint and Carpet, which he operated until his retirement in 2001.
Eddie was active in numerous civic and athletic organizations. Eddie was recently named "Honorary Host President" of the 2003 Babe Ruth Baseball 13-Year-Old World Series and selected to be inducted in the Arkansas Officials Association's Hall of Fame in July 2003.
He was a member of First Christian Church in Pine Bluff and served as deacon. Eddie was a member of Babe Ruth League, Inc. Advisory Board, Arkansas Officials Association, Rosswood Country Club Board of Directors, King Cotton Sports, Twenty-Five For Now and Pine Bluff Jaycees. He umpired 12 Southwest Regional Tournaments and 16 straight Babe Ruth Baseball World Series (a record that cannot be broken due to a recently implemented policy), he served as host president for the 1994 and 1998 Babe Ruth World Series in Pine Bluff, and was instrumental in bringing the Babe Ruth Softball World Series in 2001 and the Babe Ruth 13-Year-Old World Series in 2003 to Pine Bluff.
Eddie enjoyed traveling with his wife, playing golf with his sons and friends, and spending many a sunny day watching the horses race at Oaklawn Park.
He recently celebrated his life with his family and many dear friends in October, 2002, at "Eddie Bryan Appreciation Day" held at Harbor Oaks where he was honored for his years of service to the City of Pine Bluff and Babe Ruth Baseball. His friends and family gathered once again on February 1, 2003, at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs and enjoyed the "King Eddie Stakes" the 3rd race of the day held in his honor by the Hot Springs Convention and Visitor's Bureau. The City of Hot Springs further honored Eddie by naming its annual sportsmanship trophy, The Eddie "King" Bryan Sportsmanship Award, which will be given each year at the Hot Springs' Diamond Lakes Basketball Classic.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jerry Lanier Bryan.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Rosemary Bryan; three sons and daughters-in-law, Marty and Holly Bryan of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Chris and Robin Bryan of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and Davey and Beth Bryan of Fayetteville, Arkansas; four grandchildren: Christopher and Chase Bryan of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and Victoria and Jenny Bryan of Fayetteville, Arkansas; and three sisters, Cherry Robertson of Dyersburg, Tennessee, Sandy Morris of Oakland, Tennessee, and Patsy Bates of Toone, Tennessee.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Pine Bluff with Rev. Mitch Shelburne and Rev. Delores Stroud of First Christian Church officiating. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery
by Ralph Robinson & Son. First Christian Church will host a reception for family and friends after the committal service in the First Christian Fellowship Hall. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Robinson's.

Duey Clayton Condry

Duey Clayton Condry, age 65, of rural Pine Bluff passed away early Friday morning at his home.
Duey was born September 23, 1937, a son of the late William Luel and Francis Emma Simpson Condry in Dumas, Arkansas. He attended Sulphur Springs Elementary School and then advanced to Watson Chapel High School. He worked for Ben Pearson Archery until 1966, then spent the next 25 years working for Illinois Tool Works. The next eleven (11) years he worked in the car maintenance division for James Edwards Railroad Service Company. Duey married Lillian Allene Wolfe on October 22, 1955 in Pine Bluff. He was a member of Sulphur Springs Baptist Church.
Mr. Condry is survived by his wife, of 47 years, Lillian; one son, DeWayne Condry of White Springs, Florida; one brother, William Luel "Buddy" Condry of Odessa, Texas; three sisters, Louise Jaggers and Mary Jane Bryant both of Pine Bluff, and Betty Sue Acree of Frost Proof, Florida; two granddaughters, Crystal Raye Smith and Kati Lynn Condry and two great granddaughters, Alyssa Raye Smith and Mallory Marie Smith.
He was preceded in death by two sister, Lois Thompson and Pauline Thompson.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at 11:00 AM, at Ralph Robinson and Son Funeral Home. Reverend Billy West will officiate. A visitation will be held on Monday, 5-7 PM. Interment will be at Fitzhugh Cemetery, Pine Bluff. The family will be located at the home of Johnny and Salinda Hayden, 6708 West Pinewood Drive, Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
Clay Dewain Crabtree
September 20, 1932 - March 07, 2003
Clay Dewain Crabtree, age 70, of Pine Bluff, died at Jefferson Regional Medical Center Friday evening. Mr. Crabtree was born September 20, 1932, in Humphrey, Arkansas, a son of the late Eldon James and Elsie Louise Cotner Crabtree.
Mr. Crabtree was reared and received his early education in Humphrey and moved to Pine Bluff with his step-father, Mr. M. H. Hewitt and mother, Elsie Cotner Crabtree Hewitt, in 1942 and attended the Pine Bluff schools.
In 1950, he joined the Navy and served in Korea until the end of the war. Upon returning from his duty in the Navy in October of 1954, he began attending Monticello A & M College (now the University of Arkansas at Monticello).
Mr. Crabtree had worked at the Western Auto Store, Life of Georgia Insurance Company and he worked on the construction of the International Paper Mill in Pine Bluff and worked for International Paper in the Mill at Bastrop, Louisiana. On January 1, 1960, he began working at the Pine Bluff Fire Department, retiring as Captain on January 1, 1987.
He obtained his professional Surveyors License in 1965. He designed and built some of the older subdivisions in Pine Bluff, (1967-1980). He also worked at the Corps of Engineers from January 1, 1987 to April 30, 1993, having worked on the facilities at the Pine Bluff Arsenal, the railroad bridges over Fourche Creek in the Little Rock area and the bridge across the Arkansas River at Pine Bluff on Highway 79 North.
Mr. Crabtree was a member of White Hall United Methodist Church, Branchville Masonic Lodge #256, the Scottish Rite Consistory in Little Rock and Sahara Shrine Temple of which he was a member and past Captain of the Foot Patrol.
Mr. Crabtree was preceded in death by one brother, Eldon James Crabtree, Jr.; his mother, Elsie Crabtree Hewitt and step-father, Mr. M. H. Hewitt.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Sue Nix Crabtree, whom he married December 28, 1954, in Star City, Arkansas; one son Clay Crabtree, Jr. of Sheridan, Arkansas; one daughter, Katherine Sue Ashcraft of Harligen, Texas; one granddaughter, Christina Jo Marrquin of Morrilton, Arkansas; one grandson, James Eldon Crabtree of Sheridan, Arkansas.
Funeral services will be Monday, March 10, 2003, at 1:30 P M at the White Hall United Methodist Church by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors with the Reverend Rob Walker officiating. Interment will follow in Leek Cemetery
in Star City, Arkansas. The family will receive friends at Robinson's from 2 to 4 P M Sunday afternoon.

Joyce Gottleib Solomon Selig
November 03, 1921 - August 20, 2001
Joyce Gottlieb Solomon Selig, 79, of Little Rock, died Monday, August 20, 2001, at Arkansas Hospice Center in North Little Rock of pancreatic cancer. Born November 3, 1921, in Pine Bluff to Joe and Leah Hecht Gottlieb, she attended college in Long Beach, California, returning to Arkansas where she married Marvin Solomon in 1940. Mr. Solomon died in 1958.
The proprietor of her own Pine Bluff dress shop, The Jo-Lynn, Joyce later worked for B&J Jewelers. She married Leonard L. Selig in 1974. Mr. Selig died in 1980. She volunteered for The Stroke Center in Palm Springs, California, during her retirement for 12 years. Returning to Arkansas in 1996, she was a Temple B'nai Israel member. Before moving to Little Rock, she was a longtime Temple Anshe Emeth member.
Survivors are Joe and Missy Solomon of Little Rock, son and daughter-in-law; Lynda and Richard Zionts of Palm Springs, California, daughter and son-in-law; John S. and Judy Selig of Little Rock, stepson and stepdaughter-in-law; Ann Selig Lubin and Barry Lubin of Beltsville, Maryland, stepdaughter and stepson-in-law. Grandchildren include Leah Selig Elenzweig and husband Neil, Michael John Selig and wife Jennifer, Amber Marie Selig, Joe Ryan Solomon, Gregory Braxton Solomon, Miriam "Mimi" Joyce Solomon, all of Little Rock. Great-grandchildren include Bailey Hannah Elenzweig, Alexi Tess Elenzweig, Marin Elizabeth Selig, all of Little Rock.

Dale Gentry

Reverend Dale Gentry, 92, of Pine Bluff, died Wednesday, November 14, 2001, at his son's home in Monticello, Arkansas. Born in Nevada County, Arkansas, on February 9, 1909, to the late Thomas Jasper and Nancy Kennedy Gentry, he was reared and received his early education in Nevada County, Serepta Springs (near Pea Ridge), Prescott, and Pea Ridge. He was a graduate of Arkansas State Teacher's College (now UCA), and attended Bethel College (McKenzie, Tennessee), College of the Ozarks (Clarksville, Arkansas), and Bethany College (Bethany, Oklahoma).
Reverend Gentry was called into the ministry in 1926. His first sermon, on "the dividing of the sheep and the goats", was delivered September 17, 1927, in Serepta Shed in Nevada County. His 74 year ministry in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church was continuous until his final illness, with his last sermon delivered September 16, 2001, on his 74th anniversary as a pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Star City. During those years he never took a vacation. His first pastorate was at Blackland Presbyterian Church in Northwest Arkansas. He pastored churches in Nevada, Sevier, Columbia, Ouachita, Calhoun, Drew, Grant, Lincoln, and Jefferson Counties. Those congregations included Walkerville in Columbia County, First Cumberland Presbyterian in Pine Bluff, Newton Chapel in Lincoln County, New Hope and Mt. Moriah in Nevada County, E. T. Allen Memorial in Ashdown, Rose Hill in Drew County, Shell Chapel in Jefferson County, First Presbyterian in Star City, and Pine Ridge Cumberland Presbyterian in Grant County. He pastored as many as eight churches at one time on a full, part-time or interim basis. He conducted revivals in all 75 Arkansas counties and in Texas, Missouri, Louisiana, Kentucky, Alabama, Ohio, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. As a young man, he also taught school for three years at Cale, Arkansas, taught at Ladd, Arkansas, and worked as a rural mail carrier from 1942 until 1948 in Nevada County.
He married the former Louise Robinson on January 29, 1943, in Durant, Oklahoma. They were married for over 54 years before her death on November 8, 1997.
Reverend Gentry was a member of the Arkansas Presbytery of the Synod of the Great Rivers in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was a Mason, a member of the Arkansas Consistory, and the Sahara Shrine Temple where he served as Chaplain for many years.
Survivors include one son, Steve Gentry of Monticello, one sister, Florine Parker of Pine Bluff, and two grandsons, Cody and Seth Gentry. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Rev. Homer Gentry, and two sisters, Fay Garrett and Floy DeWoody.
Services will be at 11:00 AM Friday, November 16, 2001, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son in Pine Bluff. Committal services will be at 3:00 PM in Rose Hill Cemetery
in Drew County. The family asks that memorials take the form contributions to the donor's home church.
Raymond Broach

Raymond Broach, 72, a resident of Pine Bluff, died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
Born in Rison October 26, 1930, he was a son of William Dillard and Sarah Margaret Hopper Broach.
Mr. Broach was reared and received his early education in Watson Chapel schools. He served in the United States Army from 1947 to 1951. He married Della Smith on March 28, 1950, in San Bernardino, California. Mr. and Mrs. Broach moved to Pine Bluff in 1956. Mr. Broach was a shop manager for the Pine Bluff Glass Company for 36 years until his retirement in 1990. He was a Baptist.
Mr. Broach was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers and 3 sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Della Broach of Pine Bluff; one son, Larry Ray Broach of Pine Bluff and one sister, Lucille Ring of Pine Bluff.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 20, 2003, in Broach cemetery at Kingsland. The Reverend Ricky Broach will officiate and the services will be under the direction of Ralph Robinson & Son. The visitation will be from 6-8:00 PM Monday, May 19, 2003, at Ralph Robinson & Son.
Burton Tillman Carruthers, Jr.

BT Carruthers, Jr., age 57, of Pine Bluff, passed away May 17, 2003, in Pine Bluff. He was born June 17, 1945, in Pine Bluff, a son of the late Burton Tillman Carruthers, Sr. of Prescott, Arkansas and Geneva Carruthers of Pine Bluff.
Tillman was a 1963 graduate of Watson Chapel High School. He was a longtime manager and employee of the Railroad. He coached Little girls softball, locally, while his daughters were growing up. The name of the team was "Cotton Belt Express", and he often said his coaching years were some of the best times of his life.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Toney Leon Carruthers.
He leaves behind a wonderful wife (his words), Lydia (Shannon) Carruthers; three daughters, Susan hamann of Bella Vista, Shannan Cash of Rison, Tracey Carruthers of Little Rock; two grandchildren, Gage and Regan "Booger" Cash of Rison; one brother, Tommy Charles Carruthers; one sister, Jamie Wagner of Imperial, Missouri and stepmother, Betty Carruthers of Prescott.
The family will receive visitors Monday, May 19, 2003, from 4 to 7 PM at 5912 Knotts Island Road, Altheimer, Arkansas. Interment services will be private family only.
