Flora Ross Bussiere
September 11, 1921 - July 08, 2003

Flora Ross Bussiere, age 81, of Pine Bluff, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock. She was born September 11, 1921, in Pine Bluff, a daughter of the late Merrion C. and Anna Marie Eheman Ross.
Mrs. Bessiere was reared and educated in Pine Bluff where she attended the Watson chapel schools.
She was of the Catholic faith, a homemaker and a member of the Woodmen of the World.
Mrs. Bussiere was preceded in death by three brothers.
Mrs. Bussiere is survived by her husband, Mr. Ronald Bussiere, whom she married November 20, 1970, in Pine Bluff; three sons, James Ross of Pine Bluff, Freddie Ross of Sheridan and Marion Scott of Summerville, Tennessee; one daughter, Jo Ann Wood of Pine Bluff; one brother, Norman H. Ross of Pine Bluff; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 11, 2003, at 2:00 P M, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors with the Reverend Norman H. Ross, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Robinson's Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to Missonary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, 9480 North DeMazenod, Belleville, Illinois 62223-1160.

Billy Bock
April 30, 1935 - July 08, 2003

Billy Bock, 68, of Pine Bluff died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center, in Pine Bluff. He was born April 30, 1935 in Kansas City Missouri, to Neil J. and Sophia Bock Boles.
He was reared and received his early education in Clarksville, Arkansas, where he attended Holy Redeemer Elementary School, and then graduated from Subiaco Academy, where he holds the school record for receiving the most letters during his high school years. He was a four year letterman in football, basketball, baseball, track, tennis and five years in boxing. He received All-State and All-District honors and was one of the few to ever receive the Curry Award for the best all-around athlete as a junior.
He received his BS from the College of the Ozarks in Clarksville, and MS (ed) from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. At the College of the Ozarks, he was a four year letterman in football, baseball and boxing.
In boxing, he was a 5-time State Golden Gloves Champion, Mid-south Champion, AAU Champion, Louisiana-Arkansas National Guards Champion, named "Outstanding Boxer" in the Regional National Golden Gloves Tournment in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and participated in the National AAU Tournament in Toledo, Ohio, and in the Chicago National Golden Gloves Tournament. Also, he sparred with Muhammed Ali when he was known as Cassius Clay.
He had coached in Arkansas for 44 years, spanning 6 decades, the 50's through 2003. During this time, he served as head coach, 7 years in football, 9 years in basketball, 2 years in golf, 3 years in tennis, 6 years in boxing, and 35 years in baseball. Six of the 35 years in baseball were as head coach at Henderson State University, the other 29 years, were at St. Anne's Academy in Ft. Smith, Sylvan Hills High School in North Little Rock, Arkansas High at Texarkana, and the past 21 years at Pine Bluff High School. In 29 years as a baseball head coach in high school, his teams had won, 9 State Championships, 5 State-Runner-ups, and 6 State Semi-finalists. His teams had appeared in 27 of 29 State Tournments and had won 23 District Championships, with an over-all record of 641-121.
As a head coach in football, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis and boxing, Billy Bock had never had a losing season in any sport. Championships have been won in every sport and in each of the six decades.
He had coached in State All-Star Games in football, basketball and baseball. He was the head coach in the 1st Arkansas High School Baseball All-Star game and was also the head coach in the 1st Arkansas Intercollegiate Baseball All-Star game. He was the 1986 Head Coach of the "Gold Medal" winning South Team in the USA Olympic Festival.
Bock had been honored with many awards including, District Baseball Coach of the Year (18 times) ABCA District VI Coach of the Year (3 times), ABCA Coach National Coach of the Year (2 times), NAIA District 17 Baseball Coach of the Year, AIC Baseball Coach of the Year, National High School Gold Baseball Coaching Award, NFICA Outstanding Coach for Arkansas, USBF Golden Diamond Award, US Baseball Coach of the Year for Arkansas, District Football Coach of the year (3 times) and District Basketball Coach of the Year (2 times).
Collegiate Baseball named him Coach of the Decade for the 80's and then Co-Coach of the Century . He was honored twice by the Arkansas Legislature and twice had a Billy Bock Day in Arkansas proclaimed by then Gov. Bill Clinton.
Bock served as Chairman of the Executive Board of the Arkansas High School Baseball Coaches Association and ABCA District VI Chairman for the past 6 years. He had received the Distinguished Alumni Award at Subiaco Academy and also the University of the Ozarks. He has been inducted into the University of the Ozarks Hall of Fame and also the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame. This year he was selected for induction into the American Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. He is the 14th high school coach to ever receive this award. The induction will be in January, 2004, at San Antonio, Texas. His family will be present to proudly accept this prestigeious award in his honor.
Bock was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Joe Ann West Bock, two sons, Kraig Bock of Austin, Texas, Kirk and Lillian Bock of Harrison, two daughters, Kellie and Jeff Cohen of Ft. Smith, Kim Buck of Texarkana, Texas, five grandchildren, Jennifer Buck, Jessica Buck, Garrett Bock, Caroline Bock and Katie Cohen, two aunts, Laura Belle Bock of Ozark, Freda Lee Bock of Clarksville, four cousins, Larry Bock of Sumter, S. Carolina, Karen Jaggers of Ozark, Linda Spurlock of Clarksville,and Lee Ann Amerson of Fairbanks, Alaska.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Reverends Andrew Smith, Nicholas Fuhrman, Harold Heiman and Monsignor John O'Donnell officating.
Graveside services will be 5:00 P.M. Friday, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Cemetery in Clarksville, by Ralph Robinson and Son Funeral Directors.
A Rosary service will be at Ralph Robinson and Son Chapel, at 6:00 P.M. Thursday. Although all are certainly welcomed to particiapte in the Rosary service, the family will remain to receive friends, from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M.
Memorials may be made to Subiaco Academy, 405 N. Subiaco Avenue, Subiaco, AR 72865, University of the Ozarks, University of the Ozarks (Advancement), 415 N College Avenue, Clarksville, AR 72830, or to the Pine Bluff High School Baseball Booster Club, to establish a Billy Bock College Scholarship Fund in his memory, c/o David Mazzanti, P.O. Fred L. Waymack, Sr.
October 07, 1916 - November 18, 2001

Fred L. Waymack, Sr., 85, of Pine Bluff, died at his son's home in Royal, Arkansas Sunday, November 18, 2001. Mr. Waymack was born October 7, 1916, in Grant County, Arkansas, a son of the late Lester L. and Martina O'Rourke Waymack.
Mr. Waymack was reared and received his education in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School. Mr. Waymack was a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Navy and was a lifelong resident of Pine Bluff.
He was a Metropolitan Life Insurance Company agent for many years. He retired from Metropolitan at age 55 and began working for Buckner Realty Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Pine Bluff.
Mr. Waymack was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marguerite Forrest.
Mr. Waymack is survived by his wife, the former Maxine Barrett, whom he married in 1937, in Pine Bluff; one son and daughter in law, Fred Waymack, Jr. and Carnell of Royal, Arkansas; two grandchildren, Ronald Waymack and Leslie Anne Waymack, both of Hot Springs; two great-grandchildren, Cassie Waymack and Nicole Waymack both of Hot Springs; one brother, Lester A. Waymack of Stephenville, Texas.
The family will receive friends at Robinson's from 6 to 8 PM Monday evening. They will also be at home at 2304 Pine Hill Drive in Pine Bluff.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 20, 2001, at 1:30 PM in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Dr. John McClanahan and Reverend Gordon Topping officiating. Burial will be in Bellwood Cemetery. The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to First Baptist Church, 6501 S. Hazel Street, Pine Bluff, AR 71603.

Winston J. ( Buddy ) Deane
August 02, 1924 - July 16, 2003

Winston J. "Buddy" Deane, 78, of Pine Bluff, AR, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Mr. Deane was born August 2, 1924, in St. Charles, Arkansas, to the late George Ballard and Estelle Walton Deane.
Mr. Deane graduated from Kemper military School in Gulfport, Mississippi, and attended both Northwest College in Chicago, Illinois, and Cornell University in New York. He served in the US Army during World War II.
Mr. Deane began his career in broadcasting as an announcer in Little Rock, Arkansas, later moving to Memphis, Tennessee, and then went to Baltimore, Maryland, to join radio station WITH. He became the Number One rated radio personality and accepted a two hour, six days a week, television variety, dance, interview disc jockey presentation with WJZ-TV in Baltimore. The show was broadcast for seven years, and the "Buddy Deane Show" was the highest rated local television show in the nation. Practically every major recording personality of that era appeared with him on the television presentation. As a result, he appeared on several network TV shows with such personalities as Merv Griffin and Mike Wallace.
Mr. Deane was selected as one of ten local radio and television personalities by CARE to tour Europe at the time of the Hungarian uprising. They interviewed refugees at the iron curtain as they escaped into Austria. As a result of this program, the ten radio and television personalities raised over one million dollars for the Care Crusade. Mr. Deane received a personal letter of commendation from the President Eisenhower.
He was also selected as one of the ten local radio and television personalities for a three week tour with the USO of Europe in 1959, was named Number One Disc Jockey to America in 1962, one was of eight local radio and television personalities contracted to have a minor role in a Universal Studios movie with Rowan and Martin. He also received numerous write-ups and articles in national publications, such as Life, Pageant, Coronet, Radio and TV Mirror. He had returned several times to Baltimore to record radio and television commercials and to appear as a guest on local radio and TV shows. In 1973 a full one-hour TV show on the 25th Anniversary of WJZ-TV in Baltimore was dedicated to "The Buddy Deane Show."
While still an on-the-air performer, he purchased KOTN in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, in 1960 and returned to his native Arkansas in 1964 to assume personal management of that facility. In 1984 he was invited to return as a guest of the City of Baltimore on the twentieth anniversary of his departure. A dinner was held in his honor with the profits from the event going to the Baltimore Fire Department's Burn Center Fund. In the office of the Mayor of the City of Baltimore, with representatives from counties surrounding the city, November 18th, was declared Buddy Deane Day in Maryland. The event sold out three days in advance.
Mr. Deane was former President and General Manager of radio stations KOTN-AM and KFXE-FM and early morning show host on KOTN-AM. He sold his broadcast properties in 1983 and devoted his time to civic and charitable causes. In 1995 he came out of retirement and owned six stations: KOTN-AM, KDDA-AM, KXFE-FM, KCLA-AM, KPBQ-FM
and KZYP-FM. He was CEO of Delta Radio, Inc. and was partners with his daughter, Dawn Deane and his son-in-law, Craig Eastham. Delta Radio, Inc. was sold to M. R. S. Ventures on May 1, 2003.
He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Pine Bluff.
He married the former Helen Stephenson in St. Charles, Arkansas, on July 4, 1947.
Mr. Deane's past activities include the Pine Bluff Kiwanis Club, where he was chairman of numerous committees, board member, Distinguished President, and past Distinguished Lt. Governor, Missouri-Arkansas Kiwanis Clubs, Resolutions Committee Chairman, Convention Committee Chairman, Public Relations Committee two term chairman - Arkansas-Missouri Kiwanis Clubs. He traveled across Missouri and Arkansas speaking to Kiwanis members in cities and towns on the obligations of Kiwanis membership, visiting some 40 clubs. He served as Program Chairman of the Pine Bluff Kiwanis Club and as Chairman of the New Building Committee. As Missouri-Arkansas district Public Relations Chairman, he traveled to Fayetteville to instruct members of Kiwanis Clubs from both states in basic public relations techniques for Kiwanis Clubs.
He served on the Marketing Committee for Pine Bluff, under the sponsorship of Pine Bluff 2000, traveling to Jonesboro and Hot Springs and made presentations to community leaders. He served as the Mayor's Liaison with the Pine Bluff Convention Center; Chairman of the Education Committee for the Three Rivers Audubon Society and as President, representing Jefferson and five surrounding counties for four terms; a Volunteer (political) Chairman of the Re-elect Dr. Sturgis Miller, Representative. As a board member of the Pine Bluff Chamber of Commerce; he contributed approximately 1,250 hours of volunteer time in one year (900 hours to United Way alone) and drove approximately 6,294 miles; was Chairman of FreedomFest, Pine Bluff's celebration of history and the arts in 1989 and 1990, and the 150th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of the City of Pine Bluff.
Mr. Deane's activities included Chairman of the Tourism Committee for the Chamber of Commerce (which instituted a new program for those involved in hospitality (hotels, motels and restaurants)) entitled G. O. S. H. (Good Old Southern Hospitality); served at President of the Jefferson County Unit of the American Cancer Society, and conducted a successful fund raising campaign garnering $12,000.00 over goal for the local unit (this unit has failed to reach its goal the previous year). He served as Campaign Chairman of the United Way of Jefferson County (the only person to have accepted this position twice). In meeting the expressed campaign goal, he acted as leader in over 125 meetings, kick off, and seminars. He produced and hosted an all volunteer television program on current events concerning Pine Bluff and Jefferson County on local Cable. He also served as Chairman of the Adopt-a-Spot program of the Clean and Beautiful Commission (Keep America Beautiful). This is a unique committee that has encouraged the adoption of specific high visibility locations around the county by individuals and business sponsors.
Mr. Deane has received the following recipient awards: Kiwanian of the Year Award; Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce's Arkansas Community Development Award for Exceptional Accomplishment; Arkansas Broadcasters Prestigious "Pioneer" Award; a special award from the Arkansas Division of the American Cancer Society, Special Award for Achieving Jefferson County's First Fair Share Contribution to the Arkansas Cancer Society's Annual Fund Drive; Arkansas Division of American Cancer Society's "Outstanding Special Events Award"; Special Award (American Cancer Society) for Leading the Arkansas State Division's First Realization of Over $1,000,000.00 in Funds; Award for Exceptional Leadership in Jefferson County and Pine Bluff in Community and Civic Causes: All Civic Night, sponsored annually by Leadership Pine Bluff, and Pine Bluff 2000; Induction into Leadership Pine Bluff's Hall of Fame, as a lifetime member in 1989 and a second award from Arkansas Community Development Program for Statewide Recognition for Outstanding Leadership in Improving the Community and
Arkansas, 1990.
His survivors include his wife, Helen S. Deane, three daughters, Joellen Beard of Little Rock, AR, Debbie Lowry of Pine Bluff and Dawn Deane of St. Charles, AR; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2003 at 10:30 AM in the St. Charles United Methodist Church, St. Charles, AR. with Governor Mike Huckabee and Reverend Richard Pope officiating. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Friday at Ralph Robinson & Son from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to Arkansas Broadcasters Association, Scholarship Fund (for Buddy Deane), 2024 Arkansas Valley Drive, Suite 403, Little Rock, Arkansas 72212.

Earl Edward Elkins
March 05, 1914 - July 18, 2003

Earl E. Elkins, 89, of Pine Bluff, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at Trinity Village Retirement Lodge, Inc.
Mr. Elkins was born March 5, 1914 in Pine Bluff to the late J. A. and Lola Sanders Elkins.
He was a life-long resident of Pine Bluff, where he attended White Hall High School. He married Ms. Dorothy Woods on December 5, 1938 in Pine Bluff. In 1942, he joined the United States Army and served in WWII.
Mr. Elkins was a painter for the Pine Bluff Arsenal for 19 years before retiring in 1976.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of White Hall where he was a member of the Men's Senior Sunday School Class.
He is survived by three brothers, J. A. Elkins, Jr. of White Hall, Frank Elkins of White Hall, and Charles Elkins of Camden, Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Elkins, seven sisters, Lottie Mae Cole, Viola Reed, Vertie Mae Pearce, Mary Shultz, Marie Lawerence, Leila Coward, and Bessie Elkins; two brothers, Eugene Elkins and Arthur Vance Elkins; and one step-brother, R. V. Willis.
The family will receive friends Sunday, 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Robinson's.
Funeral Services are scheduled for Monday, July 21, 2003, 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Dr. Bob Harper officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Madeline Venable Blocker
October 08, 1931 - July 26, 2003

Madeline Venable Blocker, 71, a resident of Pine Bluff, died Saturday, July 26, 2003, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
Born October 8, 1931, in Perry, Arkansas she was a daughter of Charlie and Ester Freeman Venable.
Mrs. Blocker was reared and received her early education in Perry. She married Arnold Blocker in 1948. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Blocker was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Blocker; her parents; one son, Jimmy Blocker; one daughter, Carolyn Casteel; two brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include two sons, Doyle Blocker of Pine Bluff and Larry Blocker of Sherrill, Arkansas; five daughters, Mattie Sweat of White Hall, Patsy Boerner of Sherwood, Julie Stephens of White Hall, Mary Robertson of White Hall and Sandra Arispe of Pine Bluff; three sisters, Alma Luker of Dumas, Kathreen Robertson of Dumas and Lucille Clayton of Louisiana; seventeen grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday, July 29, 2003, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend Keith Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Flat Bayou Cemetery. The visitation will be from 6-8:00 PM Monday, July 28, 2003 at Ralph Robinson & Son.

John Ellis Caruthers, JR
February 19, 1944 - July 26, 2003

John Ellis Caruthers, Jr., age 59, of Pine Bluff, died at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff on Saturday, July 26, 2003. Mr. Caruthers was born February 19, 1944, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, a son of John Ellis and JoAnn Foster Caruthers of Pine Bluff.
John was reared and educated in Pine Bluff. He was a graduate of Pine Bluff High School. He was also a graduate of Hendrix College, earning a bachelor of science degree in business.
John served as a Captain in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era.
John was the owner-operator of Caruthers and Associates, an independent insurance agency in Pine Bluff and was past president of the Arkansas Life Underwriters Association. He was a Rotarian and he was an active member of the First Baptist Church
He is survived by one daughter, Kathryn Caruthers Maack of Little Rock; one son, John Mark Caruthers of Little Rock; his parents; one sister, Jamie Caruthers O'Banion of Ruston, Louisiana; and two grandchildren, Libby and Anna Maack.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at 4:00 PM, at First United Methodist Church by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors with the Reverend Charles Settle and the Reverend Bill Wellons officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Robinson's from 6 to 8 PM Monday evening.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to Trinity Village Retirement Inn, 6400 Trinity Drive, Pine Bluff, Arkansas 71603 or to First United Methodist Church, 200 West Sixth Street, Pine Bluff, Arkansas 71601.
