Rufus Elton Cassidy

Rufus Elton Cassidy, age 95, of Pine Bluff, died at the Newport Hospital in Newport, Arkansas, Thursday, January 8, 2004, after a brief illness. Mr. Cassidy was born April 5, 1908, in Bodcaw, Arkansas, (Nevada County). He was a son of the late Noah and Ida Mitchell Cassidy.
In his work as a boilermaker for forty years in the construction business, Mr. Cassidy had lived in many places. One of which was Camden, Arkansas. He had been a resident of Pine Bluff since 1960.
Mr. Cassidy was a member of the Meadowview Baptist Church, a charter member of Boilermaker Union Local #69.
Mr. Cassidy was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, one sister; his wife, Hoveta Downs Cassidy and one grandson, Scott Dwight Cassidy.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jim Cassidy and Kay of Pine Bluff; one daughter and son-in-law, Patti Dunn and James of Newport; one grandson, Stephen D. Dunn of Taipei, Taiwan; four granddaughters, Viki Suzanne Dunn of Newport, Jeania Cassidy Scifres and Kelli Cassidy Cole, both of Pine Bluff and Kristie Cassidy Wilson of Sherwood, Arkansas; four great-grandsons, Scott Cassidy Scifres of Pine Bluff, James Shaver Dunn of Taipei, Taiwan and Evan Carter Wilson and Brayden Lane Wilson, both of Sherwood, Arkansas; two great-granddaughters, Dylan Cassidy Dunn of Taipei, Taiwan and Kaitlyn Elizabeth Cole of Pine Bluff.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 10, 2004, at 3:30 PM, at the Meadowview Baptist Church by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors with Reverend A. D. Livingston and Reverend W. C. Malone officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Robinson's Friday evening from 6 to 8 PM.
Pallbearer's will be Jimmy Cole, Burl Scifres, Jeff Wilson, Sam Tatom, Mike Stover and John Sharp.
Ralph Evans Cecil

Ralph Evans Cecil, 71, a resident of Redfield, died Sunday, January 18, 2004, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
Born February 8, 1932, in Vandervoort, Arkansas, he was a son of John Wesley and Bessie Dickerson Cecil.
Mr. Cecil was reared and received his early education at the Plainview School near the Pine Bluff Arsenal. He served in the United States Air Force. He went to work at International Paper Company, as a paper tester, in 1960 and worked there till his retirement 1n 1972. Mr. Cecil was a member of the South Side Baptist Church in Pine Bluff.
Mr. Cecil was preceded in desth by his parents and two brothers.
Survivors include; one son, Kevin Cecil of Little Rock; one daughter, Tina Gates of Redfield; one brother, Carel Dean Cecil of Little Rock; one sister, Mary Lee Lewis of Kalkaska, Michigan and 2 grandsons.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 AM Wednesday, January 21, 2004, at Calvary Baptist Church in Pine Bluff with Pastor Warner Worthan officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery
by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors. The visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday at Ralph Robinson & Son.
Robert Louis ( Bob ) Rump
December 27, 1922 - December 05, 2001
Robert Louis Rump, 78, of Pine Bluff, died Wednesday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. He was born December 27, 1922, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of the late nd Minerva Leslie Odell and John Louis Rump. He was reared and educated in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a graduate of Western Hills High School in Cincinnati. He attended the University of Indiana and he also received college credit in the 
military.
Mr. Rump entered the U. S. Army in January of 1943 and on November 9, 1944, he married Lela Porter in Texarkana, Arkansas and she survives him along with one daughter, Brenda Gail Rump of Pine Bluff; two sisters, Mary Ervin and Rena Madill, both of Cincinnati, Ohio. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jane Single and Edythe Taylor.
Mr. Rump served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam and retired with the rank of Major in 1965 from the Pine Bluff Arsenal with twenty two years military service. While at the Arsenal, he served as Finance Officer and Deputy Comptroller for four years, and was Public Affairs Officer for twelve years.
Mr. Rump had been a resident of Cincinnati for nineteen years, and while in the military served in Hawaii, Rio de Janiero, Japan and numerous stateside assignments.
Mr. Rump was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he served as Lay Reader, Chalice Beared, Lay Eucuristic Visitor (LEV), Parrish Finanical Secretary and Treasurer of the Men's club, Pine Bluff Rotary Club, Pine Bluff Retired Officers Association (TROA).
Funeral services will be Saturday, December 8, 2001, at 10:00 AM, at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Reverend Linda Ray officiating with burial in Graceland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Robinson's Friday evening from 6 to 7:30 PM.

Lily Moncla Brooks

Lily M. Brooks, 90, of Pine Bluff, died Thursday, January 29, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center in Pine Bluff. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on May 9, 1913, a daughter of the late Louis Ernest and Laura Fields Moncla, she was reared in Moncla, Louisiana, and received her early education in Marksville, Louisiana.
She married R. Teryl Brooks in 1931 and the couple made their home in several Louisiana cities until moving to Pine Bluff in 1981. A graduate of Southwest Louisiana University in Lafayette, she taught school for many years in Lafayette and Hammond, Louisiana. Mr. Brooks died in 1982. She married Ben F. Quinn in 1989. Mr. Quinn died in 2001.
Mrs. Brooks was a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Pine Bluff. She was a Presbyterian elder, active in Presbyterian Women for many years, and taught Bible classes at Trinity Village before becoming a resident there. A musician, she loved the piano and organ. She loved to travel, and had visited every continent except Antarctica.
Her survivors include two sons, R. Teryl Brooks, Jr. MD of Pine Bluff and Louis M. Brooks of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Services are Saturday, 1:30 PM in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend Wm. Lee Kinney officiating. Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery. The family will be at the home of Teryl and Helen Claire Brooks at 4720 Beech Street in Pine Bluff. Imogene Shults Bitely
July 17, 1928 - January 29, 2004
Funeral services for Imogene Shults Bitely, 75, of Tamo will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 5, 2004, at Linwood Baptist Church on Highway 65 South in Jefferson County. Visitations will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 4, at Ralph Robinson & Son of Pine Bluff and 1:00 PM until service time at Linwood Baptist Church. Interment will be in Nicholson Cemetery.
Born July 17, 1928, at Sulphur Springs to Frank and India (Taylor) Shults, she died Thursday, January 29, 2004, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock. She married Stanley Bitely June 23, 1945, in Pine Bluff. They were married for more than 56 years when he died in 2002.
Mrs. Bitely was a homemaker and businesswoman. She was the first woman admitted to the Memphis Cotton Board of Exchange while working with Turley Cotton Brokerage. Her interest in supporting the efforts of the small cotton farmer prompted her to begin her own cotton brokerage firm in 1976 which mainly served the customers of Tamo Gin Co. and Bitely Bros. Gin Co. in Grady. Her most recent business venture was operating the Rivergate Restaurant in Pine Bluff.
She was an active member of Linwood Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and involved in Harmony Baptist Association activities. Mrs. Bitely was very supportive of missionary efforts in her community, state, and the world.
She was the first woman appointed as a member of the Frenchtown-Auburn Levee District Board.
In the 1960s she was a field representative for the Jefferson County Office of Economic Opportunity. As a cancer survivor, she was an American Cancer Society volunteer.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Frankie Rice and Virginia Morris Gatlin.
Survivors include her children, Elaine Freeman, Durant, OK, Nina Bitely, Pine Bluff, and Dr. Stanley Ward Bitely, Tamo; grandchildren, Casey Freeman, Stillwater, OK, Carey Freeman, Durant, OK, Matthew and Denise McBryde, Little Rock, Amber and Bryan Usrey, Marion; son-in-law, Dr. Denny Freeman, Durant, OK; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a host of friends around the world.
The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to Shady Grove Cemetery

Jewel Mae Hyde Bonner

Jewel Mae Hyde Bonner, 91, of Pine Bluff died Friday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Bonner was born October 20, 1910, in Jefferson County, to Elbert Benjamin and Virgie Moring Hyde.
She received her education in the Providence and Pine Bluff schools.
She worked at McCrory's 5&10 before her marriage to Charles Francis Bonner, November 8, 1930, in Pine Bluff. They owned and operated The Community Theatre until 1963, and for several years were partners in The Drive-In Movies on East Harding and later The Pines Drive-In Movies.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Pine Bluff.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a granddaughter, Jewel Ethelyn Bonner Gaither.
She is survived by a son, Charles Richard Bonner of Pine Bluff, two grandchildren and two-great-grandchildren.
Gravesides services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday (12/10/01) at Graceland Cemetery, with Reverend Gordon Topping officiating. Burial will be by Ralph Robinson and Son.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Sunday afternoon, 2-3.

Jane Cole ( Janie ) Buckner
September 06, 1948 - January 31, 2004
Jane Cole "Janie" Buckner, 55, of Pine Bluff, died at home Saturday, January 31, 2004. Born in Piggott, Arkansas on September 6, 1948, the daughter of Dortha Jane Winton Cole of Maumelle, Arkansas, and the late Hillary Cole, she was reared and received her early education in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. She attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and later the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She married Kenneth E. Buckner in Pine Bluff on December 23, 1970, and has resided with her family in Pine Bluff since 1975.
Janie was a member of several organizations around Pine Bluff including, the American Business Women's Association and the Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas. She served as a volunteer Docent for the Arts Center and volunteered with the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. She was also very active with her church, First Baptist Church of Pine Bluff where she was a member of the sanctuary choir and served on several committees. In October of 2003, she coordinated the 150 year anniversary banquet and festivities for First Baptist. She was currently the records secretary at First Baptist.
In addition to her many civic duties, her other interest and hobbies included all outdoor activities such as gardening, landscaping, hiking, boating, water and snow skiing. She was also a talented artist and enjoyed interior decorating and arts and crafts.
Although she stayed busy in the community, her family was her main focus. Over the last several years she watch both of her daughters get married and welcomed her first grandson, Thomas Mason Schueck, into the world. Her kind smile and gentle spirit will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Cheryl Cole Harris.
Her survivors include her husband, her mother, two daughters, Jennifer Kristen Buckner Schueck of Little Rock and Jacquelyn Christine Buckner Smith of Ellensburg, Washington; sister, Cindy Cole Miller of St. Paul, Minnesota; brother, David Cole of Vilonia, Arkansas; and her grandson.
Services are Tuesday, February 3, 2004, at 10:30 AM at First Baptist Church with Reverend Gordon Topping officiating. Interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery

R. B. Burnett
June 25, 1926 - January 31, 2004
R. B. Burnett, 77, of Pine Bluff died Saturday, January 31, 2004, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. He was born June 25, 1926, in Bluffton, (Yell County) Arkansas, to the late Jack and Willie Mae McConnell Burnett.
Mr. Burnett was reared and educated in Dumas, where he attended school.
He married the former Josephine Widmer on November 10, 1945, in Dumas. He served in the United States Army during World War II.
They moved to Pine Bluff in 1966. He owned and operated Burnett's Antiques in Pine Bluff retiring in 1975.
Mr. Burnett enjoyed hunting and gardening. He was a member of Lazy Bend Hunting Club in Grapevine. He was also a member of Hardin Baptist Church, where he had served as Chairman of the Ushers. He also lead the Training Union Class on Sunday Night. He was currently working as a Chaplain for the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 56, in Sheridan, Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Lee Burnett; and a daughter, Betty Ann Burnett.
Survivors include his wife Josephine Widmer Burnett of Pine Bluff; sons, Roy Dale Burnett, Sr., of Pine Bluff, Donald Ray Burnett of Keithville, Louisiana; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Mamie Bayird of Monticello; and a brother, J. W. Burnett of Gould.
The family will receive friends Monday, 6 to 8 PM at Ralph Robinson and Son.
Services are Tuesday, 2 PM, February 3, 2004, at Hardin Baptist Church with Reverend Clyde Jones and Reverend Jim Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
