Sammie Holmes (Rauls)
July 8, 1917 - January 3, 2009

Sammie Holmes, age 91, of Pine Bluff, died at her home Saturday, January 3, 2009. Mrs. Holmes was born July 8, 1917, in Cleveland County, a daughter of the late Greely A. and Iva Reid Rauls.

Mrs. Holmes was reared and received her education in Cleveland County and Pine Bluff..

She was a homemaker and a member of Lakeside United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Holmes was preceded in death by her husband, Pitt Holmes, whom she married August 26, 1937, at Pine Bluff. She was also the last survivor of ten children.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Bonnie Rauls of Pine Bluff; four neices, Gayle Vardaman of White Hall, Debbie Reynolds of Bella Vista, Leann Gibbons of Pine Bluff and Eddie Lynn Dildy of Mt. Ida; two nephews, David Rauls of Memphis, Tennessee and Phillip Rauls of Redmond, Washington.

Funeral services will be graveside in Graceland Cemetery at 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 6, 2009, by Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend Jim Brooks officiating.

The family will receive friends at Robinson's Monday evening from 6 to 8 PM.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to Lakeside United Methodist Church, 1500 Olive Street, Pine Bluff, Arkansas 71601.

Virginia Smith Garman
January 22, 1919 - January 5, 2009

Virginia Smith Garman, 89, of Pine Bluff, died Monday, January 5, 2009 at Trinity Village Medical Center.

She was born January 22, 1919 in Pine Bluff, daughter of the late Carey F. and Jewel Thornton Smith.

Mrs. Garman was reared and received her early education in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School in 1936 and from Judkins Business College in 1938.

She co-owned and operated Garman's Cleaners with her husband, the late George W. Garman, Sr., whom she married August 2, 1940 in Pine Bluff.

Mrs. Garman was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class and a past Sunday school teacher.

She was also preceded in death by her son, George William "Bill" Garman, Jr.; and sister, Mary Nell Wilcox.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Betty Hollis Garman of Pine Bluff; three grandchildren, George William "Bill" Garman, III of Denver, Colorado, Leslie Reagor and her husband, Murry of Little Rock; and Jenny Ross and her husband, Brian of Little Rock; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2009 in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend Don Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Bellwood Annex Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5-7 p.m. at Robinson's.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church, 1801 West 17th Avenue, Pine Bluff, Arkansas or Trinity Village, 6400 Trinity Drive, Pine Bluff, Arkansas 71603.

Leslie A. Gomes
November 5, 1947 - January 6, 2009

Leslie Allan Gomes, age 61, of White Hall, Arkansas, died Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at UAMS in Little Rock.

Mr. Gomes was born November 5, 1947, in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii, a son of Juanita Gomes and the late Ernest Gomes, Sr., and the late Winifred Irene Texeira Gomes.

He was reared and received his education from St. Anthony’s Catholic High School in Maui, Hawaii. After which he enlisted in the United States Army. He retired after 22 years with the United States Army as a Sergeant First Class and worked nine years in security for the Department of Defense at the Pine Bluff Arsenal.

Mr. Gomes was preceded in death by his mother, Winifred Irene Texeira Gomes; his father, Ernest Gomes, Sr; brothers, Ernest "Butchie" Gomes, Jr. and Rocky Gomes; a sister, Valerie Mona Kahae all of Maui, Hawaii.

His survivors include his wife, Karen Saunders Gomes of White Hall, whom he married November 6, 1976, in Pine Bluff; a son, David M. Gomes of Huntsville, Alabama; daughters, Leslie D. Gomes of Conway, and Pamela D. Phelps of Taft, Tennessee; a grandson, Corey Gomes of Huntsville, Alabama; mother, Juanita Gomes of Maui, Hawaii; two sisters, Mary Jane Kahaleauki and her husband Chunga, of Maui, Hawaii, and Juanita "Honeygirl" Tengan and her husband Kama, all of Maui, Hawaii; sister-in-law, Vicky Gomes (Butchie) of Maui, Hawaii; two brothers, Ronald Gomes and George Gomes and his wife Michelle, all of Maui, Hawaii; and an adopted brother, Albert "Caveman" Wallace of White Hall.

A visitation will be Friday, January 9, 2009, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, at Ralph Robinson and Son Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held in Maui, Hawaii.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to the UAMS Arkansas Cancer Research Center.

Murray Wilson Reichen
February 8, 1917 - January 7, 2009

Murray Wilson Reichen, 91, of Pine Bluff, died Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

He was born February 8, 1917, in Pine Bluff, son of Frank S. and Bettie Elizabeth Wilson Reichen. Mr. Reichen was reared and received his early education in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

Mr. Reichen worked for Arkansas Power and Light (now Entergy) as its Billing Supervisor for 10 years. He worked for General Waterworks (now United Water) for 37 years, retiring as its General Manager in 1983. Mr. Reichen was honored when General Waterworks dedicated the Murray W. Reichen Water Treatment Plant in 1991.

He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder, church administrator and Sunday school superintendent. He was a member of Quapaw Lodge #730 F&AM, 69 year member of Scottish Rite of Free Masonry in Little Rock and life member of Sahara Temple. Mr. Reichen was a member of the Lions Club, past President and member of the Pine Bluff Boys Club (now Seabrook YMCA) Board of Directors, past treasurer of Greater Pine Bluff Chamber of Commerce, past member of Pine Bluff Planning Commission, past chairman of Southwest section of American Water Works, and past Division Chairman of Community Chest and later United Way. He was named 1985 Layman of the Year by the Kiwanis Club.

Mr. Reichen was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, William Christian Reichen and Franklin Reichen.

Survivors include his wife, Valerie Shaw Reichen, whom he married February 22, 1946, in Pine Bluff; daughter, Donna Reichen Shipman (Marlin) of Jonesboro; sister, Merle Reichen of Pine Bluff; one granddaughter, Sarah Jordan (Matt) of Fairfax, Virginia; and two great-grandchildren, Katherine and Nicholas Jordan.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 9, 2009, at Central Presbyterian Church with Reverend Jim Freeman officiating. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Presbyterian Church, 6300 Trinity Drive, Pine Bluff, Arkansas, 71603.

Bobby J. Bearden
December 26, 1926 - January 11, 2009

Bobby J. Bearden, 82, a resident of Pine Bluff, died Sunday, January 11, 2009, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

Born December 26, 1926, in Pine Bluff, he was a son of Havis and Pauline Smith Bearden.

Mr. Bearden was reared and received his early education in Pine Bluff. He worked many years as an over the road trucker before retiring. He was of the Methodist faith.

Mr. Bearden was preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter, Carolyn Bearden; one brother, James Bearden.

Survivors include his companion of twenty-seven years, Anna Ard; one daughter, Martha Jo Bradford of Memphis; granddaughters Lisa and Michelle; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Billie Ione Harris of Athens, GA.

The visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors.

Graveside services will be in Bellwood Annex Cemetery at 10:00 AM Wednesday, January 14, 2009, with Reverend Glen Flemmons officiating and under the direction of Ralph Robinson & Son.

Josephine Burnett (Widmer)
August 2, 1926 - January 13, 2009

Josephine Widmer Burnett, 82, a resident of White Hall, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at Hospice Homecare Inpatient in Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

Born August 2, 1926, in Success, Arkansas, (Clay County), a daughter of the late Joe L. and Mary Murray Widmer.

Mrs. Burnett was reared and received her early education in Dumas, graduating from Dumas High School. She later attended Pines Vo-tech.

On November 10, 1945, she married R.B. Burnett and together they moved to Pine Bluff in 1966.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, going to auctions and finding antiques. She was an active member of the Hardin Baptist Church. She was President of WMU, a member of the Training Union Adult Class and the church choir. She was member of Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Chapter 56 at Sheridan. She was also a member of the Red Hatters Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, R. B. Burnett in 2004; an infant son, Robert Lee Burnett; a young daughter, Betty Ann Burnett; a brother, Charles Lee Widmer; a sister, Bonnie Fay Smallwood; and a great-grandchild Abby Gayle Flowers.

Survivors include two sons, Roy Dale Burnett, Sr. of White Hall, Donald Ray Burnett of Keithville, Louisiana; four grandchildren Karen Burnett Calvert of Pine Bluff, Roy Dale Burnett, Jr. of Pine Bluff, Donna Burnett Johnson of Wichita Falls, Texas and Becky Burnett Flowers, Bossier City, Louisiana; and two great-grandchildren, Jacob James Johnson and Anna Kathryn Johnson.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 PM, Thursday, January 15, 2009 at Robinson's.

Services will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, January 16, 2009 at Hardin Baptist Church with Reverend Clyde Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may sign the online register at www.ralphrobinsonandson.com.

Memorials can be made to Hardin Baptist Church, 300 Todd Lynn Drive, White Hall, Arkansas 71602.

Cecil Lee O'Neal, III
January 12, 2009 - January 12, 2009

Cecil Lee O'Neal, III was born and passed away Monday, January 12, 2009. He was the son of Cecil Lee O'Neal, Jr. and April Nobles O'Neal and was born on his mother's birthday.

He is survived by his parents, two brothers Sean Baldwin and Joshua Baldwin; a sister Kristen Baldwin all of White Hall; grandparents Cecil and Paulette O'Neal of Arlington, Tennessee, Claudia Branch of Houston, Texas and Don and Bobbie Nobles of White Hall; and great grandmother, Lorene Andrews of White Hall.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, January 16, 2009 at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Lorene Myhand (Jones)
April 26, 1928 - January 16, 2009

Lorene Myhand, 80, a resident of Pine Bluff, died Friday, January 16, 2009, at the Hospice Inpatient Care Unit of Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

Born April 26, 1928, in Rison, she was a daughter of Osro and Versa Brewer Jones.

Mrs. Myhand was reared and received her early education in Rison, and was a graduate of Rison High School. Elva Lorene Jones married Hagin Wilson Myhand on June 2, 1950, in Rison. She worked as a Department Manager for Wal-Mart until her retirement. She was of the Baptist faith.

Mrs. Myhand was preceded in death by her parents, Osro and Versa Jones; her husband, Hagin Wilson Myhand; one brother, Van Jones.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Sheila and George Kulbeth of Monticello; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Bea Myhand of Mena; two sons, Micky Myhand of Pine Bluff, and Larry Myhand of Diamond City, AR; sister and brother-in-law, Gracelle and Benny Cash of Rison; sister-in-law, Nadine Jones of Rison; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family will receive guests from 2:00-4:00 PM Sunday, January 18, 2009, at Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Monday, January 19, 2009, at Bethel # 1 Baptist Church near Rison with Reverend Wade Totty officiating. Burial will follow in Black Cemetery by Ralph Robinson & Son.
