Winnie Reaves Freeman
August 01, 1898 - May 30, 2002
Winnie Reaves Freeman, age 103, of Lago Vista, Texas, formerly of Pine Bluff, passed away early Thursday morning at her home.
Mrs. Freeman was born August 1, 1898, in Harrisburg, Arkansas, a daughter of Alexander and Lula Mae Lane Reaves. She was reared in Harrisburg and married Newton W. Freeman in 1923, in Hope, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on September 3, 1976. She moved to Pine Bluff in 1924 where she remained until her husband's death in 1976. Winnie then moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to be near her children. Her children and grandchildren knew her as Mom, Mamaw and Nanny.
Winnie is survived by three (3) son, Newton W. Freeman III, Paul W. Freeman and Oscar K. Freeman all of Las Vegas, Nevada; one (1) daughter, Elouise Pond of Henderson, Texas; sixteen (16) grandchildren, twenty-four (24) great-grandchildren and thirteen (13) great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, and one grandson, Kevin Peyton in 1994.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday afternoon, at 2:00 pm, at Memorial Park Cemetery
in Pine Bluff. Rev. Jimmy Watson will officiate. Visitation will be from 12:00 - 1:30 pm at the funeral home.
Eugenia Ammons Leeton
June 10, 1915 - June 01, 2002
Eugenia Ammons Leeton, 86, of Pine Bluff, died Saturday at Davis Lifecare Center in Pine Bluff. Mrs. Leeton was born June 10, 1915, in Pine Bluff, a daughter of the late Edgar Warren and Eugenia Rutherford Ammons.
She was raised and received her early education in Pine Bluff. Upon graduating from Pine Bluff High School, she entered Ouachita College (now Ouachita Baptist University) in Arkadelphia, Arkansas with a degree in Education.
Mrs. Leeton was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pine Bluff.
She was preceded in death by her husband Mr. Harold Leeton.
She is survived by a son and daughter in law, Harold Warren and Nancie Leeton of Stormville, New York; sister, Helen Ammons of Pine Bluff and a nephew, Russell David Ammons of St Louis, Missouri.
Graveside services will be Monday, June 3, 2002 at 12 Noon, in Graceland Cemetery
with Reverend Gordon Topping officiating. The family will receive friends at Robinson's from 10 AM to 11:30 AM. Monday.
Elmer Lewis Allen

Elmer Lewis "Turk" Allen, 72, of Pine Bluff died May 29, 2002 at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. He was born January 2, 1930 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Allen in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
He was reared and educated in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Mr. Allen severed in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a clerk and manger for several of the local motels.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Allen; a son, William Dean Allen and a brother, Clarence Allen.
Mr. Allen is survived by sons, Dennis Allen of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Marty Allen of Jacksonville, Arkansas; daughters, Judy Allen and Peggy Bartholomew both of Mound, Minnesota; sister, Betty Southered of Oregon; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are 11:00 AM, Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at the Arkansas State Veteran's Cemetery
in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
Mary Joyce Faver
October 15, 1942 - June 14, 2002
Mary Joyce Faver, 59, a resident of England, Arkansas died Friday, June 14, 2002, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock. Mary was born October 15, 1942, in Bessemer, Alabama, a daughter of the late Robert Edward and Virginia Elizabeth Goodwin Crawford. She was reared and received her early education in Bessemer, Alabama. She graduated from McAdory High School in McCalla, Alabama.
Mary worked four years as a secretary for State Farm insurance in Bessemer, Alabama, for thirty-three years for State Farm in Monroe, Louisiana, and worked as the warden's secretary at the Arkansas Department of Corrections; Maximum Security Division at Tucker, Arkansas. She married Edward Ray Faver in Eureka Springs on July 5, 1993. Mary was a long time member of Glen Hills United Methodist Church in Bessemer, Alabama.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Edward and Virginia Elizabeth Goodwin Crawford. She is survived by her husband, Edward Ray Faver of England; four brothers, Robert Edward Crawford of Fayatteville, North Carolina, L.D. Lewis and Nelson Lewis of Bessemer, Alabama and Byron Lewis of Clanton, Alabama; two sisters, Margaret Wells and Ouita Chapman of Bessemer, Alabama.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at 10:00 AM at the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son in Pine Bluff with the Reverend John Sandine officiating. Burial will follow at Flat Bayou Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at Ralph Robinson & Son from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Monday, June 17, 2002. Memorials may be made to the Flat Bayou Cemetery

Robert L ( Bob ) Ross, MD

Robert L. Ross, MD, 52, of Pine Bluff, died Thursday, June 20, 2002. Born in Helena, Arkansas, on January 8, 1950, Dr. Ross was the son of Nancy Kirkwood Ross of Pine Bluff and the late Robert Harlan Ross.
Dr. Ross was reared and received his early education in Helena, graduating from high school there. He was a cum laude graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he earned his bachelor of science degree in 1972. He earned his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1976, then served his internship in the Little Rock Flex Internship Program. His residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology was served at Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport where he was Chief OB/GYN resident. He came to Pine Bluff and entered private practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology in January of 1980.
On the medical staff at Jefferson Regional Medical Center since 1980, he served on the OB/GYN Department Committee with many two year terms a department chief, on the Executive Committee, the Credentials Committee, the Endoscopy Committee, the Physician Well Being Committee, the Infection Control Committee, and the Utilization Review Committee. He was a member of several professional organizations, including the Arkansas State Medical Society, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the American Medical Association. He also served on the Physicians Health Committee of the Arkansas Medical Foundation.
Since his retirement from private practice in December of 2000, Dr. Ross served as a volunteer professor at the Area Health Education Center in Pine Bluff, and as a volunteer for both the Jefferson County Chapter of the American Red Cross and Christopher House.
Dr. Ross was also a member of First United Methodist Church. An avid fisherman and duck hunter, he was a member of Porter's Lake Hunting Club, GreenHead Hunting Club, and Ducks Unlimited
Survivors include his wife, Cindy York Ross; two sons, Jonathan H. Ross and Brian K. Ross, both of Little Rock; one daughter, Sarah F. Ross of Little Rock; one stepson, Christopher Clark of Pine Bluff; one stepdaughter, Amber M. Clark of Pine Bluff; his mother; one brother, John Ross of Daphne, Alabama; and two sisters, Patricia Ross of Little Rock and one of Texas.
Services are scheduled for Monday at 1:30 PM in the Sanctuary of First United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Settle and Rev. Fred Arnold officiating. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall of the church following the service. Arrangements are by Ralph Robinson & Son. The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the American Red Cross or to Ducks Unlimited.
Thelma Lee Cook

Thelma Lee Cook, age 87, of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away on Saturday morning at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. She was in Pine Bluff visiting her son and daughter-in-law Rev. Edward and Nancy Cook.
Mrs. Cook was born July 23, 1914, a daughter of Charles and Carrie Williams Mauk in Bunker, Missouri. She was reared in the Salem, Missouri area and moved to St. Louis in the mid-thirties as a young lady. Thelma married Ralph Cook in August 1937 in St. Louis and a short time later they moved to Lemay, South County, Missouri. He preceded her in death in October 1998. She was a member of the Southside Freewill Baptist Church in St. Louis.
Thelma is survived by, one son, Rev. R. Edward (Nancy) Cook of Pine Bluff; three daughters, Gloria Jean ( Lynn) Frazier of Bainbridge, Ga, Janet Gail Day of Arnold, Missouri and Sandra Lee (Arthur) Ruehl of St. Louis, Missouri; one brother, Cleo (Eva) Mauk of Mehlville, Missouri; one sister, Mayzo Pauline Morton of St. Louis, Missouri; 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
Funeral services will be on Friday in St. Louis at Kutis Funeral Home, 5255 Lemay Ferry Rd, St. Louis at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be on Thursday evening, at the funeral home, from 4-9 p.m. Burial will be at Park Lawn Cemetery, St. Louis. Local arrangements were handled by Ralph Robinson and Son Funeral Home.
Edward C Rhoden
September 27, 1923 - June 29, 2002
Edward C. Rhoden, 78, of 9610 Highway 270, Pine Bluff died Saturday, at his home.
Mr. Rhoden was born September 27, 1923 in Grant County, to Corbit and Elsie Lewis Rhoden. He was reared and received his early education in Grant County.
He worked as a heavy equipment hauler for many years for Casey Jones, and then later hauled and operated heavy equipment for himself.
Mr. Rhoden was a Methodist and an avid hunter and fisherman.
He married Mary Massanelli, June 9, 1946 in Pine Bluff.
He is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Maxie of Pine Bluff, four brothers, Vernon Rhoden, Gene Rhoden, Archie Rhoden and Richard Rhoden, all of Pine Bluff, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Rhoden was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a son, John Edward Rhoden, three brothers, Alton Rhoden, Johnny Rhoden and Robert Rhoden..
Gravesides services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, at Memorial Park Cemetery, with Reverend Al Michael officiating, with burial by Ralph Robinson and Son.
The family will receive friends at Ralph Robinson and Son, Sunday, 6-8 P.M.

Mary Coleman Kinman
January 30, 1908 - June 29, 2002
Mary Coleman Kinman, 94, of Pine Bluff, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. Born January 30, 1908, in Batesville, Arkansas, she was the daughter of the late Judge Dene H. and Norma Landers Coleman.
She was reared and received her early education in Batesville. She was a graduate of Batesville High School and attended Arkansas College (now Lyon College) at Batesville. She married Richard E. "Son" Kinman in Little Rock May 20, 1928. The Kinmans lived in Batesville after their marriage until 1937, moving to Pine Bluff that year when Mr. Kinman was transferred here by Arkansas Power and Light Company. Mr. Kinman died January 27, 1999.
Mrs. Kinman originated the Pine Bluff Commercial column, "Around and About", which she wrote for many years. A very active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Pine Bluff, she was a member of St. Elizabeth Guild and a past Sunday School teacher there. She was a member of the Birthday Club. A talented musician, she played alto saxophone, the baritone ukulele, and the cello, performing along with her husband in a band called the "Trinity Terrors". A song writer, poetess, and artist working with pastels, she was active many community organizations. She was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Pine Bluff, was active for many years as a volunteer for both the Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas and the American Red Cross at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include her daughter, Norma Kinman Allee of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; niece, Linda Payne of Pine Bluff; nephew, Joe Warren of Cave Creek, Arizona, and several nieces and nephews in the New Orleans area. She was also preceded in death by a son, Richard E. Kinman, III, who died in August of 1952.
Services are scheduled for Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at 11:30 AM at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pine Bluff with the Reverends Limuel G. Parks and Edgar "Hap" Hoffman officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery
by Ralph Robinson & Son. The family will receive friends at Robinson's Monday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Ellis Everett Leslie

Ellis Everett Leslie, age 75, of Pine Bluff, passed away Monday evening, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.
Ellis was born December 15, 1926 in Pine Bluff, the son of Ellis and Carmen "Billie" Cobb Leslie, Sr. He was reared and educated in Pine Bluff graduating with the class of 1944. Ellis served during World War II, he was a Petty Officer in the Navy Air Corp. Mr. Leslie married Marilyn Murphy on February 7, 1948 in Pine Bluff. He also attended the Institue of Cleaning and Dyeing in Silver Springs, MD. He and Marilyn owned Leslie Cleaners from which he retired after 30 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Ellis was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer.
Mr. Leslie is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marilyn; three (3) daughters, Ann Hall of Pine Bluff, Cathy (Bill) Parker of Benton, Arkansas and Lisa Leslie of Lewisville, Texas; one (1) brother, Bob Leslie of Hot Springs, Arkansas; four (4) grandchildren, Noel and Grace Parker, Katie Hall and Jayme Smith and (3) great grand children, Leslie Smith, Chris Smith and Brittney Sipes.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at the Chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son, 807 Cherry at 2:00 pm. The Rev. Gordon Topping will officiate. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Pine Bluff.
Claude William Merlo

Claude William Merlo, 76, of Pine Bluff died July 1, 2002 at his home. He was born October 10, 1925 in Pine Bluff to John L. and Blanche Garraughty Merlo.
Mr. Merlo was reared and educated in Pine Bluff where he attended St. Joseph's Annunciation Academy. He was a graduate of Pine Bluff High School and Louisiana Tech where he received a degree in Business Administration.
Mr. Merlo served in the United States Navy during World War II.
Mr. Merlo married the former Emma Parault on November 23, 1951 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Mr. Merlo worked as a Chief Clerk in the Gravity Yard at the Cotton Belt for
37 1/2 years before retiring in 1986. He also owned and operated Merlo Gardens and Greenhouses which has been in operation since 1887.
Mr. Merlo was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW, American Legion and the Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John L. and Blanche Garraughty Merlo; a sister, Marie M. Dalby and a brother, Anthony L. Merlo.
He is survived by his wife, Emma Merlo of Pine Bluff; sons, Joseph W. Merlo of Ft. Irwin, California, James L. Merlo of Ft. Hood, Texas; daughters, Claudia Croswell of Sherwood, Arkansas, Mary Bowlin of Conway, Arkansas, Martha Taylor of Stanardsville, Virginia; sisters, Betty J. McCollum of Silsbee, Texas, Johnnie Lou Cancelarich of Presque Isle, Maine; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A vigil will be held Thursday night 7 PM in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM, Friday, July 5, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Andrew Smith officating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
