Dr. John H. McClanahan

Dr. John H. McClanahan, 72, of Pine Bluff, died Monday, August 5, 2002, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Born November 12, 1929, in Roe, Arkansas, to the late Jim Fowler and Hazel Loe McClanahan, he graduated cum laude from Little Rock Central High School in 1946. He graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree from Ouachita Baptist College in 1950. He earned his masters of divinity degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1953 in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. McClanahan earned a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1957. His doctoral thesis was titled "The Psychology of the Self in the Writings of Augustine".
Dr. McClanahan's pastoral and teaching ministry began as an assistant pastor at First Baptist Church in Ashdown, Arkansas from 1948-1950 and as an assistant pastor at Franklin Street Baptist Church, Louisville, Kentucky in 1950-1951. He was pastor of the Powersville Baptist Church, Powersville, Kentucky in 1951-1952, pastor of the North 42nd Street Baptist Church in Louisville, 1952-1954; and Instructor and later Assistant Professor of Psychology of Relations and Pastoral Care, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 1955-1957. He returned to Arkansas and was pastor of First Baptist Church, Hope, Arkansas, June of 1957 to September of 1961. He served as pastor of First Baptist Church in Blytheville, Arkansas, from 1961 to September 30, 1965. Dr. McClanahan was pastor of First Baptist Church in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, from October 1, 1965, to January 31, 1995. The television ministry of First Baptist, Pine Bluff, broadcast his sermons to Arkansans for 30 years.
Dr. McClanahan's other preaching ministries included over 150 revivals in twenty states from the District of Columbia - Maryland area to California. He spoke at Baptist Student Union and Religious Emphasis Week programs at over 30 college campuses including Baylor, Ouachita, Mercer, Furman, William Jewel, and Stetson Universities, the University of Arkansas, University of Georgia, University of Alabama, Blue Mountain College, University of Mississippi and Louisiana Tech University.
His ministry included preaching and teaching in Hawaii, Europe, the Panama Canal Zone, Greece, Turkey, and Guatemala. He led twelve religious tours of the Holy Land and Europe from 1969 to 1996.
Published several times, he was the author of the books A Call To Contemporary Discipleship (Nashville: Convention Press, 1969) 129pp.; 1 Peter: Message of Encouragement (Nashville Convention Press, 1982) 143pp; Man as Sinner, Vol. 7, Layman's Library of Christian Doctrine Series (Nashville: Broadman Press, 1987.) In addition, sermons that were published included, "The Ecstasy and the Agony," Best Sermons, edited by G. Paul Butler, (New York: Trident Press, 1968) Volume X, pp. 96-102; "Civil Rights or Christian Rightness," Pulpit Digest, Volume XLV, No. 318, February, 1965, pp. 25-30. He was the author of several published articles including "The Patient's Right to Die: Moral and Spiritual Aspects of Euthanasia", Memphis and Mid-South Medical Journal, August, 1963, pp. 303-316; "Why They Are Critical," The Young People's Teacher, January, 1964, - a survey of the attitudes of representative Baptist college youth toward contemporary Southern Baptist Church life; plus a series of articles correlating contemporary novels with certain Old Testament books, The Baptist Student, November 1962 to April 1963; a series of articles on youth problems, Window of YWA, January to December 1962; Devotional comments, Open Windows, August 19-25, 1962; a series of articles on personal ministries, CONTEMPO, October 1974 to September 1975 and a series of Bible study articles, CONTEMPO, October 1975 to September 1976. He also authored numerous articles for Sunday School curriculum materials.
He served his denomination as President, National Alumni Association, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY, 1972-73; and as a member of the Christian Life Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), June, 1966-72; Executive Board, Arkansas Baptist Convention, November 1966-72; Board of Trustees, Ouachita Baptist College, 1960-1965; 1973-78; 1980-1986; Board of Trustees, Southern Baptist Junior College, 1961-1965 (now Williams Baptist College); Moderator, Hope Baptist Association, Arkansas 1960 -1961; and the SBC Executive Committee, 1974-1982. He was a trustee of the Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock from 1972-1978 and 1986-1991. He was moderator of the Harmony Baptist Association in Pine Bluff in 1980 and 1991.
The list of his civic and community services includes President of the Hope Ministerial Alliance in 1960, Blytheville Ministerial Alliance in 1965, the Pine Bluff Ministerial Association in 1969; member, Board of Directors, Blytheville YMCA in 1965; and for many years served in Pine Bluff on the Boards of Directors of the Southeast Arkansas Mental Health Center and the Jefferson Regional Medical Center Hospice Program.
Dr. McClanahan's accomplishments were recognized in his academic years with membership in Pi Kappa Delta Honorary Forensic Society, Epsilon Omega Sigma; and as Baptist Student Union Campus president, Ouachita Baptist College and Arkansas BSU President in 1949. He was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1950, Outstanding Young Men of America, 1965 Edition, and Who's Who in the Southwest, 1971-1972 Edition. He was honored as Alumnus of the Year, 1982, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Ouachita Baptist University in May of 1987.
He was Visiting Instructor in Pastoral Care and Counseling, Memphis Theological Seminary (Cumberland Presbyterian Church), 1966; also teaching in the H. I. Hester Lectureship on Preaching, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City, MO, March, 1976; Sewell Visiting Professor of Pastoral Studies, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY, January, 1977; Thomas F. Staley Foundation Lectures, Tift College, Forsyth, GA, 1977; Adjunct Professor, D-Min Seminar in Preaching and Worship, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City, MO, April - May, 1978; Boyce Bible School, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Little Rock Branch in 1983 and 1985, Winter Term, 1987; Seminary External Education Division, Southern Baptist Seminaries, Little Rock Branch in 1988; and the Thomas F. Staley Foundation Lectures at the University of Arkansas - Pine Bluff in 1994.
Since his retirement in 1995 Dr. McClanahan enjoyed serving as a substitute teacher for both Pine Bluff and White Hall Public Schools; as an Adjunct Professor, Southeast Arkansas College in Pine Bluff in oral communication; Adjunct Professor, University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff, in Western Humanities. He has done supply preaching on Sundays, was interim pastor at Green Meadows Baptist Church in Pine Bluff, and from 1996 to the present served on the Board of Jefferson County Habitat for Humanity.
He is survived by his wife, Sissie Atkinson McClanahan, his children, John David McClanahan, MD and his wife, Leanne of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Rosalind McClanahan Mouser and husband, Kirby of Pine Bluff, AR, Stephen Edward McClanahan of Atlanta, GA; Laura McClanahan Wilborn and husband, Daniel of St. Louis, Missouri, Charles K. "Chuck" Atkinson and his wife, Susan, of Arkadelphia, Arkansas, William Marc Atkinson of Charlotte, NC and E. A. "Drew" Atkinson and his wife, Catherine Anne of Pine Bluff; brother, Jim McClanahan of Maumelle, Arkansas and 11 grandchildren, Matthew David McClanahan, Benjamin Edwin McClanahan, Alan Stephen McClanahan, Robert Austin Mouser, David Martin Mouser, Owen Parker Mouser, Andrew Joseph Wilborn, Richard Atkinson, Rebecca Atkinson, Allison Atkinson and Andrew Atkinson.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:30 AM in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Pine Bluff with Reverends Gordon Topping and Jimmy Watson officiating. Following the service, there will be a time to meet with the family in the First Baptist Fellowship Hall. Committal services will be at 3:00 PM, Wednesday in Rest Hills Cemetery
in Sherwood, Arkansas, by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors of Pine Bluff. The family will receive friends at Robinson's Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

B. C. Lawson, Sr.
March 28, 1924 - August 04, 2002
B. C. Lawson, Sr., 78, of Pine Bluff, died Sunday, August 4, 2002, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. Mr. Lawson was born March 28, 1924, in Hunter, Arkansas, a son of the late Kotz Allen and Annie Mae Hicks Lawson.
He moved, as a young boy, with his parents to Pine Bluff in 1932. He attended the Watson Chapel schools. Upon leaving school, Mr. Lawson entered the U. S. Army and served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He retired from the Army at St. Louis, Missouri with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer IV, in 1972, after 30 years of service. In 1973, he and his family moved to Pine Bluff to take care of his Mom and Dad. In 1978, he began working for Sears and Roebuck and Company and at the same time, he worked on the weekends at the Arkansas Boys Training School, taking care of the Dairy. He retired from both jobs in 1988.
Mr. Lawson was a member of St Joseph Catholic Church and the Pine Bluff Bass club, where he served the club as President in 1993 and 1994.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Allen and James Lawson and one sister, Marie Schriver.
Mr. Lawson is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maria Antoinetta Egidi Lawson, whom he married in Bari, Italy; one son, Billie C. Lawson, Jr and his wife, Lisa Couch Lawson of Sikeston, Missouri; two brothers, Bobby Lawson and his wife, Dorthy of Pine Bluff and Julius Lawson and his wife, Elizabeth, of St. Louis, Missouri; two sisters, Katherine Horn and her husband, Ellis of Irving, Texas and Betty Jo Bowlin and her husband, Jack, of Rison, Arkansas; two grandsons, Andrew Lawson of Sikeston, Missouri and Bradley Anderson of St. Louis, Missouri; one granddaughter, Stephanie Lawson of Sikeston, Missouri. He is also survived by loving nieces and nephews and many loving friends.
Funeral services will be Thursday, August 8, 2002, at 2:00 PM, at St Joseph Catholic Church by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors with Father Fred Gunti officiating. The family will receive friends at Robinson's from 6 to 7:30 PM Wednesday evening.
Memorial may take the form of contributions to the St Joseph Alter Society, 6th and Walnut Streets, Pine Bluff, Arkansas, 71601.
Jane Glasscock Bell

Mary Virginia "Jane" Glasscock Bell, 87, of Pine Bluff, died Tuesday morning at home. Born to the late Robert Earl and Julia Angeline Williams Glasscock in Pine Bluff, on March 4, 1915, she was reared and received her early education in Pine Bluff. She was a graduate of Pine Bluff High School and attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. She married Carl H. Bell in Pine Bluff on October 15, 1936. Mr. and Mrs. Bell resided in Chicago and Shreveport, LA, for several years before returning to Pine Bluff in 1953.
She was an optical dispenser in the medical clinic of Drs. Glasscock and Nixon for 14 years, retiring in 1968. She returned to work at the Yarn House in Pine Bluff, working there another 14 years in sales and teaching needlework..
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. The former Methodist was a life member of United Methodist Women. A charter member of the Jefferson County Genealogical Society, she was also a member of the John McAlmont Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Arkansas Pioneers, and Magna Charta Dames.
Mrs. Bell was a past YWCA board member and a volunteer for many years for RSVP, VIPS, and the Pine Bluff- Jefferson County Public Library. Her hobbies included genealogy, needlework, gardening, reading, music, fine arts, and bird feeding and watching.
Survivors include her son, Carl H. "Rick" Bell, Jr., MD, of Pine Bluff; her daughter, Judith Ann Bell of Melbourne, Florida; Laura Begault, Darrell Begault, Carl H. Bell, III, Courtney Bell, Nga Bell Dang, Leanne Bell Sihongheune, grandchildren; and Crystal Dang, great-grandchild. Mr. Bell died May 31, 1994. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Robert Earl Glasscock, Jr., in 1993.
Memorial services will be Friday, August 9, 2002, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Wm. Lee Kinney and Rev. Mary Susan Hilliard officiating. Private committal services in Bellwood Cemetery

Michael Lewis ( Mike ) Rice

Michael Lewis "Mike" Rice, 49, of Pine Bluff, died Monday, August 5, 2002, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. He was born May 2, 1953, in Little Rock, Arkansas, a son of Kathryn F. Bryant Rice and the late James B. Rice M.D..
Mr. Rice was reared and received his early education in Pine Bluff, having graduated from Southeast Academy in 1972. He also graduated from the University of Arkansas at Monticello in 1977, with majors in both Art and History.
In 1982, he established the Showcase of Floors and has owned and operated it since that time.
Mr. Rice is survived by his wife, Betsy Brough Arnold Rice, whom he married December 20, 1974 in Pine Bluff; two sons, Michael Jeremy Rice and Bradley Brough Rice both of Pine Bluff; his mother, Kathryn Rice of Pine Bluff; three brothers, James B. Rice, Jr., David A. Rice and Phillip B. Rice, all of Pine Bluff and one granddaughter, Madyson Tyler Rice.
Funeral services will be Friday, August 9, 2002, at 9:00 AM, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors with the Reverend Terry Ivey officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery
in Harrison, Arkansas at 3:00 PM Friday.

Willie John ( Billie ) Babcock

Willie John "Billie" Lawrence Babcock, age 86, of Pine Bluff, passed away early Wednesday morning at the Arkansas Hospice of Little Rock.
Willie was born September 21, 1915, the daugther of Phillip A. and Louise Wilson Lawrence in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She was reared in Pine Bluff and received her education at the Annunciation Academy. Ms. Babcock owned and operated a rooming house in Pine Bluff for 22 years. She retired in 1979. Willie was an active member at Meadowview Baptist Church, formerly Hazel Street Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Sunshine Girls Sunday School Class, helped with the "Open Door" RSVP program, and was a past sunday school teacher.
Ms. Babcock is survived by many friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon, August 9, 2002, at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son, 807 Cherry. Visitation will be Thursday evening, 6-8 p.m.
Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, Pine Bluff.
Patrick D. Riley

Patrick D. Riley, age 83, of Sheridan, passed away at his home after an extended illness.
Patrick was born February 25, 1919, the son of James David and Ethel Edwards Riley, in Monroe, Louisiana. He was reared and received his education in Huttig, Arkansas.He moved to Lake Village, Arkansas in 1936, where he married Ms. Ruby Head on July 20, 1940. Mr. Riley, served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church, in Center Grove and loved to hunt and fish. Patrick retired as an inspector, from Kohler, Sterling Faucet, in 1980.
Mr. Riley is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruby; two sons, Russell Riley of Little Rock, and Mickey Riley of Sheridan; one daughter, Dianna McClung also of Sheridan; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded by one son, Shelby; four brothers, and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, at 2:00 p.m., at the Chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son Funeral Directors, 807 Cherry, Pine Bluff. A visitation will be held on Friday evening 6-8 p.m. Burial will be at the Center Grove Cemetery, in Grant County.

Devin Wayne Miller, 14 months, of White Hall died Wednesday. He was born May 9, 2001 in Pine Bluff to the late Bruce Wayne (who preceded him in death) and Tara Lynn Via Miller.
Devin and his family were members of Kearney Baptist Church at Jefferson.
Survivors include his mother, Tara Lynn Via Miller of White Hall; sister, Kaylee Lynn Miller of White Hall; grandparents, Rodney L. and Joe Ann Johnson Miller, Sr. of White Hall; Johnny Via of Jefferson; Cherie Camp of White Hall; great-grandparents, Velesta Phillips of Star City, J. D. and Martina Via of White Hall, Glenn and Carol Strange of Eureka Springs; Ray and Marie Beatty of Watson Chapel; uncles and aunts, Rodney L. and Sarah Miller, Jr. of Fordyce, Angel Camp, Chris Camp, Austin Camp all of White Hall; and a cousin, Justin Tyler Miller of Fordyce.
He is preceded in death by his cousin, Gabbie Miller

Bruce Wayne Miller, 20, and his son, Devin Wayne Miller of White Hall died Wednesday. Bruce was born September 3, 1981 in Pine Bluff to Rodney L. and Joe Ann Johnson Miller, Sr..
Mr. Miller was reared and educated in White Hall where he attended school. He married the former Tara Lynn Via on May 7, 2001 in Pine Bluff.
Mr. Miller was a member of Kearney Baptist Church at Jefferson.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Lowell and Betty Miller and William Bruce Johnson; uncle, Terry Wayne Johnson; and a niece, Gabbie Miller.
Survivors include his wife, Tara Lynn Via Miller of White Hall; daughter, Kaylee Lynn Miller of White Hall; parents, Rodney L. and Joe Ann Johnson Miller, Sr. of White Hall; brother and sister-in-law, Rodney L. and Sarah Miller, Jr. of Fordyce; father-in-law, Johnny Via of Jefferson; mother-in-law, Cherie Camp of White Hall; grandmother, Velesta Phillips of Star City; uncles, Roger Miller of White Hall, Ronnie Johnson of Star City; nephew, Justin Tyler Miller of Fordyce; sister-in-law, Angel Camp; brother-in-laws, Chris and Austin Camp all of White Hall.

Harriet Henry Maresh

Harriet Henry Maresh, 57, of Reston, Virginia, died suddenly August 8 while vacationing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Born in Anniston, Alabama, to Betty Hankins Henry of Pine Bluff and the late R. Milton Henry she was educated in the Pine Bluff Public School System, attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri, and graduated from Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College). She was a member of Chi Omega.
After college she worked in New York and lived in Greece and Africa for a short time before moving to Norfolk, Virginia, where she resided for many years. She had only recently moved to Reston. Harriet traveled extensively and had a fine appreciation of music, literature, and art.
Survivors include her son, Charles Jennings Maresh, 210 Granby Park, Norfolk, VA 23505; mother; fiancé, John Bash of Reston; brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Elizabeth Henry of Little Rock.
Services are Thursday, August 15, 10:30 AM, First Presbyterian Church of Pine Bluff with Rev. Wm. Lee Kinney officiating. Committal services are Thursday, 2:30 PM, Oakland Cemetery

Mary W. Hillman

Mary W. Hillman, age 76, of Pine Bluff, passed away Monday evening, August 12, 2002, at St. Vincent Medical Center in Sherwood.
Mary was born November 24, 1925, a daughter of Nathan and Annie Connell Williams, in Calhoun County, Arkansas. She was reared in and educated at Thornton. She married Louis Francis Hillman, Jr. on January 8, 1947 in Fordyce. He preceded her in death on March 22, 1994. Mrs. Hillman was a charter member of the Forrest Park Assembly of God and enjoyed golfing.
Mrs. Hillman is survived by two sons, Jimmy (Sandy) L. Hillman of Cabot, Arkansas and Billy Hillman of Pine Bluff; one sister, Jean (D.C.) Nance of Leasville, Louisiana; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Bret) Jones, Michael (Sherrie) Hillman and David Kyle Hillman and two great grandchildren, Breann and Beau Jones.
She is preceded in death by her husband, four brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2002, at 10:00 am at the Forrest Park Assembly of God, 33rd and Hazel Sts., Pine Bluff. Reverends Henry Bateman, Harold Thompson and Bob Perry will officiate. A visitation will be held Wednesday 4-6 pm at Ralph Robinson and Son Funeral Home, 807 Cherry Street. Burial will be at Cypress Memorial Gardens.
