Elmarie Stephens (Carey)
September 23, 1913 - July 11, 2011
Elmarie Carey Stephens, 97, a resident of Russellville, and formerly of Pine Bluff, died Monday, July 11, 2011, at Russellville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born September 23, 1913, in Pine Bluff, she was a daughter of Walter C. and Virginia Higgins Carey.
Mrs. Stephens was reared and received her early education in Pine Bluff, attending Watson Chapel High School. Elmarie Carey married Robert Stephens on July 25, 1931. Mrs. Stephens was a long time beautician, an accomplished seamstress, and she worked at Dillards.
Mrs. Stephens was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Pine Bluff. She was a woman of faith, a prayer warrior, and an example of Christian strength. She was a devoted mother and a special friend to many. After moving to Russellville she was a member of Second Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Watson Chapel Garden Club.
Mrs. Stephens was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 56 years, Robert Stephens; one sister, Ruby Schultz; two brothers, Herman Carey and Gene Carey.
Survivors include two daughters, Norma Williams of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Bobbie (Al) Sparkman of Russellville; four grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons.
The visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 PM Thursday, July 14, 2011, at Good Faith Cemetery.
Graveside services will follow at 2:00 PM with Reverend Al Sparkman officiating, and directed by Ralph Robinson & Son.

James Smedley
March 6, 1919 - July 14, 2011
James Smedley, 92, of Pine Bluff died Thursday, July 14, 2011, at his home.
He was born March 6, 1919 in Camden, to W.A. and Miriam Smedley. The family moved to Pine Bluff in 1929. He enrolled in Pine Bluff schools, and graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1937.
He was employed by the St. Louis Southwestern Railroad (Cotton Belt) and then Southern Pacific Railroad, as a brakeman and conductor, retiring as a conductor in 1980.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the 791st Railway Operating Battalion in Iran, handling freight that would assist Russia in defeating Germany. He was awarded the Commemorative Medal by the Russian Government.
He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, Woodman of the World, and served as President Arkansas Jurisdiction, 1965-1969. He was a 50 year member of Jacob Brump Lodge #160, F.& A.M., Scottish Rite Bodies, and a member of the Sahara Center. He was also a member of VFW Post 4455 in Pine Bluff.
He touched so many lives in his 92 years. He will be missed by so many, especially his church family.
Mr. Smedley was preceded in death by his wife, Anemone "Ann" Reid Smedley, whom he married March 1, 1974.
Survivors include his daughters, Myra Rinehart of Rison, Lu Ann Colling of Russellville, step-daughter, Diane Simmons of Sherwood, step-son, D.E. Wallace of Sevierville, Tennessee, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and ten step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, July 16, 2011, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors with Dr. Dan Festa officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Robinson’s one hour prior to service time.

Ruby Swanson (Massey)
September 27, 1921 - July 15, 2011
Ruby Swanson, 88, of Pine Bluff, died Friday, July 15, 2011, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
Born September 27, 1921, in Newport, Arkansas, she was a daughter of William Albert and Mary Whiteside Massey.
Mrs. Swanson moved to Pine Bluff as a young girl, she was reared by her Aunt Elsie Purvis. She was educated in Pine Bluff, attending Pine Bluff High School. Mrs. Swanson was an assistant buyer for Ackerman Sportswear in DeKalb, Illinois, retiring in 1976. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, and the Sycamore Moose Lodge Number 1506.
Mrs. Swanson was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Harold Lasswell, and Charles A. Swanson; one daughter, Helen McClean; one brother, John D. Massey.
Survivors include one son, Harold Raymond Lasswell of Commerce City, Colorado; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three half-brothers, V. A. Massey, Reverend W. A. "Dub" Massey, and Joe T. Massey all of West Monroe, Louisiana; one half-sister, Francis Whitney of St. Petersburg, Florida.
The vigil will be at 6:00 PM Sunday, July 17, 2011, at Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Monday, July 18, 2011, at St. Peter Catholic Church with Father Donald Murrin celebrating and under the direction of Ralph Robinson & Son. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Pat Stanton (Quinn)
October 30, 1926 - July 15, 2011
Pat Quinn Stanton, age 84, of Pine Bluff, died Friday, July 15, 2011, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Stanton was born October 30, 1926, in Plain Dealing, Louisiana, a daughter of the late Grover L. and Alice Brown Quinn.
Mrs. Stanton was reared and educated in Lake Village, Arkansas. She moved to Pine Bluff in 1942, and has lived here since that time. She married Vernon M. Stanton August 25, 1943. Mr. Stanton died October 10, 1996. She was also preceded in death by a son, Dewayne.
She was a member of Northside Baptist Church. She worked at Central Moloney as a coil winder for thirty-eight years, retiring in 1988.
Survivors include two sons, Jimmy L. Stanton and Dale Stanton of Pine Bluff; daughter, Ann Formby of Pine Bluff; eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
Services are Tuesday, July 19, at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend Don Nobles and Reverend James Conn officiating. Visitation is Monday at Robinson's from 6 to 8 p.m.
Herman L. Robertson
February 2, 1925 - July 17, 2011
Herman Lewis Robertson, 86, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, died Sunday, July 17, 2011, at his home.
He was born February 2, 1925, in Norman, to Jess Bradford and Zell Kimbrough Robertson.
He was reared and educated in Pine Ridge, Norman and Star City.
He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.
Mr. Robertson worked 35 years for NCTR before retiring in 1988 as an animal technician.
He enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting and fishing.
He was a member of Claud Road Baptist Church which he had a great love for.
Mr. Robertson was preceded in death by a brother, Louie Robertson; a sister, Lessie Manes; and a great-grandchild, Aiden Robertson.
Survivors include his wife, Gearl Williams Robertson; sons, Dickey Lewis Robertson of Pine Bluff, Thomas Allen Robertson of Pine Bluff, Timothy Scott Robertson of Rison, Billy Joe Robertson or White Hall; a daughter, D’Ann Carole Baker of Newark; a brother, Bradford Robertson of Phoenix, Arizona; a sister, Clair Prysock of Benton; eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 PM Tuesday at Robinson’s.
Funeral service will be 10 AM, Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Claud Road Baptist Church with Reverend Mark Staples officiating.
Burial will follow at Poe Cemetery.
Dorothy Alice Gion (Matkin)
November 24, 1938 - July 17, 2011
Dorothy Alice Matkin Gion, 72, departed her earthly life July 17, 2011, after seven plus months battling cascading and continuing medical issues.
Born in Ellisville, Arkansas, on November 24, 1938, she was the third child of Doyle and Helen Martindale Matkin. She graduated from Altheimer High School in 1956 and completed a business school curriculum at Fuhr’s School of Business in Pine Bluff. Afterwards, she worked as a secretary for the Arkansas Rehabilitation Service for 27 years, accumulated in cities of El Dorado, Little Rock, and Pine Bluff. She retired from her work in 1992 and spent many of her retirement years sewing quilts, making special uniforms for her grandchildren, and most recently geocaching with her husband.
She married her husband Leland (also of Altheimer) in 1973, at Dollarway Baptist Church in Pine Bluff. (Tommy Cunningham conducted the ceremony.)
She especially enjoyed traveling with her son and husband to the Rocky Mountians with its ski areas in Santa Fe, Durango, and Salt Lake City. Albuquerque, with its aerial tram was especially a scenic thrill to her (though its Sandia Snow was deemed rather flat and sometimes quite crowded.)
Mrs. Gion is survived by her husband, Leland Gion; a son, Ray Hayes and his wife, Cheri of Little Rock; three grandsons whom she adored, Gregory, Nicholas, and Christopher Hayes, all of Little Rock; a sister, Vivian Inman and her husband Tommy of Altheimer; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Bill Matkin, and a sister, Eleanor Hickerson.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, at Robinson’s.
Funeral services will be Thursday, July 21, 2011, at 10:00 AM, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend Matt Norton officiating. Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery.
Thomas J. "Tommy" Hubanks
September 14, 1941 - July 18, 2011
Tommy Hubanks, 69, a resident of Pine Bluff, died Monday, July 18, 2011, at his home in Pine Bluff.
Born September 14, 1941, in Pine Bluff, he was a son of Thomas F. and Carrie Hubanks Joseph.
Mr. Hubanks was reared and received his early education in Pine Bluff. He was a 1960 graduate of Pine Bluff High School. He served in the United States Army and the Arkansas Army National Guard for a total of thirty-five years. He retired from the Army as a Command Sergeant Major. Thomas Jerrell Hubanks married Barbara Eheman on July 1, 1988, in Stuttgart.
Mr. Hubanks was a salesman for Hutt Building Materials for twenty-four years. He also worked in the construction division of the Arkansas Department of Correction for ten years, retiring in 2010. He was an avid golfer, and loved to travel.
Mr. Hubanks was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Marvin E. Hubanks.
Survivors include his wife of twenty-three years, Barbara Hubanks of Pine Bluff; four children, Joel (Sandra) Hubanks of New Knoxville, Ohio, John (Shea) Hubanks of Maumelle, Vicki Bice of Pine Bluff, and Lance (Jennifer) Poore of Harrison; one sister, Reba Sellers of Texarkana, Arkansas; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
The visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, July 21, 2011, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend Paul Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery

Anna Marie Gwin (Lowe)
April 16, 1938 - July 19, 2011
Anna Marie Lowe Gwin, departed this life Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at Doctor's Hospital in Little Rock.
She was born April 16, 1938, in Sheridan, Arkansas, the daughter of the late James Hawley and Alene Koon Lowe. She was reared and recieved her education in Sheridan, where she graduated from high school in 1956 and was a member of the National Honor Society. She graduated from Henderson State University with a Bachelors of Music and Education (BME) Degree in 1960, and with a Master's Degree from Ouachita Baptist University in 1967. She taught music at Hugh Goodwin, Smith Avenue, and Wyatt Schools in El Dorado in the 1960's.
She married Guy William (Bill) Gwin, Jr. on February 18, 1968. Mr. Gwin passed away on December 13, 2008.
She was a long time member of Lakeside United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Open Bible Sunday School Class, Chancel Choir, Handbell Choir, and also directed the Cherub and Youth Choir (when her children were young), passing her love of music on to her sons and other children.
Left to treasure her memory are two sons, Alan Hawley Gwin and William Chad Gwin and his wife, Amanda, all of Little Rock; and two granddaughters, Sophia and Sarah Gwin.
Mrs. Gwin was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Guy William (Bill) Gwin, Jr.
The family will receive friends Friday, July 22, 2011, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, at Robinson's.
Funeral services will be Saturday, July 23, 2011, 10:00 AM, at Lakeside United Methodist Church with reverend Alicia Frye officiating. Interment will follow at Lost Creek Cemetery
in Sheridan by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Home.

James Elam Moore
April 2, 1918 - July 20, 2011
James Elam Moore, age 93, of Pine Bluff, died Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Mr. Moore was born April 2, 1918, in Grant County, a son of the late Martin Stancil and Mattie Waddell Moore.
Mr. Moore was reared and educated in Redfield and was a graduate of Redfield High School. He was a member of First Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church and was the owner of Moore's Paint and Body Shop until his retirement in 1984.
He was an avid golfer and loved playing at the Jaycee's golf course.
Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his wife, Murel Bagwell Moore, whom he married in April 8, 1942; two sons, Jimmy and Gary Moore; three brothers, Ellis, Mike and Dell Moore; one sister, Masil Vanlandingham.
He is survived by five grandchildren, Scott Moore and Suzanne Archer, both of Pine Bluff, Lee Moore of Wynne, Kim Board of Rogers and Jeff Moore of Conway; six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; two brothers-in-law, Maxie and Richard Bagwell.
Funeral services will be Saturday, July 23, 2011, at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors with Reverend Robert Cossey and Reverend Rick Etheridge officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Robinson's from 9:00 AM until service time.
