Stella Cheek (Barba)
September 14, 1940 - October 1, 2011

Stella Cheek, 71, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, passed away Saturday, October 1, 2011, at Baptist Health Medical Center.

Born September 14, 1940, in Illif, Colorado, she was a daughter of the late Pete and Florence Barba. After graduating high school, she attended nursing school and became an LPN. She worked for Morehouse General Hospital in Bastrop, Louisiana. She was also a homemaker, a loving wife mother and grandmother. She had a hand in taking care of all the grandchildren in the family. She was a member of Bonita Road Baptist Church in Bastrop, Louisiana.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Cheek is survived by her husband of fifty-four years, Billy Cheek, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; her children, Kenneth Cheek and his wife, Jerrilynn, of Sheridan, Arkansas, Cheryl Woodruff, of Queen City, Texas, Debbie Holcomb and her husband, Ellis, of Star City, Arkansas, Terri Garrison and her husband, Jimmy, of Marion, Arkansas, and Louis Cheek, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; her fourteen grandchildren; her twenty-two great-grandchildren and one on the way; and her brothers and sisters, Angie Benavidez, of Alamosa, Colorado, Abe Barba, of Henderson, Texas, Josie Velasquez, of Twin Falls, Idaho, Margie Coon, of Alvin, Texas and Pete Barba, of Alvin, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 4, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Ralph Robinson & Son in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Bastrop, Louisiana with Reverend Carl Wilson, Jr officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors.

Jane Knight Slaughter
October 9, 1950 - October 2, 2011

Jane Knight Slaughter, 60, of White Hall, died Sunday, October 2, 2011.

She was born October 9, 1950 in Stuttgart, daughter of Filmore and Eileen Fuerstenberg Knight.

Jane was reared and received her early education in Stuttgart, Hazen and Dollarway.

She was a loving homemaker who loved sewing, quilting and driving her 1929 Model A.

Jane was preceded in death by her father; son, John D. Slaughter; sister, Rose Newman; and brother, Gerald Knight.

Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Leroy Slaughter, whom she married September 16, 1966 in Rison; mother, Eileen Knight of Rison; two brothers, James Knight of Grant County and William Knight of Louisiana; and two grandchildren, Johnathan and Madison Slaughter of Beebe.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 5, 2011 in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend Don Nobles officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5-7 p.m. at Robinson’s.

John C. "Jake" Baldwin
September 11, 1927 - October 3, 2011

John C. "Jake" Baldwin, 84, a resident of Pine Bluff, died October 3, 2011, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

Born September 11, 1927, in Pine Bluff, he was a son of Beulah Foster.

Mr. Baldwin was reared and received his early education in Pine Bluff. He was a 1945 graduate of Pine Bluff High School, and a top running back for the Zebras. He attended the University of Arkansas on a football scholarship. Mr. Baldwin graduated in 1950 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1963 he was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

Mr. Baldwin was a Lieutenant in the United States Army, serving in the Korean Conflict. He was employed, as an electronic engineer, by Western Electric later Lucent Technologies, for over thirty years. He worked in Chicago, New York, and St. Louis.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Baldwin of Pine Bluff; one son John Baldwin of Weeki Wachee, Florida; one daughter, Jackie Foster of High Ridge, Missouri; eight grandchildren.

Honoring the wishes of the deceased there will be no services.

Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

Lorene Mabry (Clemons)
March 6, 1924 - October 5, 2011

Lorene Clemons Mabry, 87, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, died Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

She was born March 6, 1924, in Jefferson County to Allan Clemons and Laural Durben Mabry.

She was reared and educated in Humphrey.

Mrs. Mabry moved to Pine Bluff in 1988.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin Mabry, whom she married August 28, 1962, in Wabbaseka; her parents; brother, Albert Clemons; sisters, Edna Peterson, Velma Heinmiller and Ethel Thor.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda McEntire and her husband Mack of Pine Bluff; two granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 PM, Friday at Robinson’s.

Graveside service by Ralph Robinson & Son will be 2 PM, Saturday, October 8, 2011, in Frazier Cemetery with Reverend Matthew Watson officiating.

Jimmy C. White
January 3, 1944 - October 6, 2011

Jimmy C. White, 67, a resident of Pine Bluff, died Thursday, October 6, 2011, at his home in Pine Bluff.

Born January 3, 1944, in Sheridan, he was a son of Jack and Katherine Davis White.

Mr. White was reared and received his early education in White Hall, graduating from White Hall High School. He attended Pines Vocational Technical School, now Seark College. Jimmy Carroll White married Jeri West in 1975.

Mr. White first worked for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Then he was a Lieutenant for the Pine Bluff Police Department, retiring in 1992. He then worked as head of security at the Pines Mall

Mr. White was a member of Sulphur Springs and Taylor Lodges of the Free and Accepted Masons. He was a member of Sardis Missionary Baptist Church. He was also a past president of the Arkansas Fraternal Order of Police.

Mr. White was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Carolyn Jenkins.

Survivors include his wife, Jeri White of Pine Bluff; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Laine White of Texas, and Dwayne and Danielle White of West Olive, Michigan; one step-son and daughter-in-law Mark and Kil Taylor of Jacksonville, Florida; one sister, Barbara Mathis of North Little Rock; his former wife and the mother of his children, Ginger Taylor.

The visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM Monday, October 10, 2011, at Ralph Robinson & Son.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at Sardis Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Ronald Young officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery by Ralph Robinson & Son.

John Collier "J.C." Cotner
October 15, 1925 - October 7, 2011

John Collier Cotner (J. C.), 85 of Heber Springs formerly of Pine Bluff, died October 7, 2011 at his home.

He was born October 15, 1925 in Humphrey to John C. and Lucy Page Cotner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Donald Cotner and William Dale Cotner.

Mr. Cotner served in the U.S. Navy, during WW II. He retired from Sears, after 35 years, as a Service Technician.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Delma Roe Cotner, whom he married May 25, 1947; daughters Judy Law (Tim) and Johnnie Green (Dale) of White Hall; Carrie Cosby (Gary) of Heber Springs and Brenda Everette (Earl) of Emory, Texas; two brothers C. D. Cotner and Carey Cotner; two sisters Lou Veda Thomas and Linda Allred; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grand children.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 10, 2011 in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Robinson’s.

Jean Rankin (Porter)
February 25, 1929 - October 9, 2011

Jean Rankin, 82, of Pine Bluff, passed away, Sunday, October 9, 2011 at her home.

Born February 25, 1929, in Manning, Arkansas, she was a daughter of the late Carl D. and Dessie Porterville Porter. She was reared and received her education in Sparkman, Arkansas, graduating from Sparkman High School. In 1946, she married Eldon F. “Johnny” Rankin; they spent fifty-four years together, until his death in 2000.

Mrs. Rankin was the Operations Manager at Dillard’s Department Store for thirty-two years retiring in 2002. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Pine Bluff and a member of the Deborah Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 40.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Robert L. Porter and Harold W. Porter and one sister Margaret E. Singleton.

She is survived by her two sons, Larry D. Rankin, and wife, Mary, of Pine Bluff and Michael E. Rankin and wife, Susan, of Little Rock; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, October 12, 2011, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend Don Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Cypress Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Robinson’s.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church, 1801 West 17th Avenue, Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

Herbert E. Tucker
April 21, 1937 - October 9, 2011

Herbert E. Tucker, 74, Pine Bluff, died October 9, 2011, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Tucker was born April 21, 1937, in Rison, Arkansas to the late Elmer Matthew and Forrest Gray Tucker. He was reared and recieved his education in Rison, where he graduated from Rison High School in 1955. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Arkansas at Monticello. He later received his Master’s Degree in Chemistry and Physics from the University of Mississippi at Oxford. He lived in Stamps from 1959 to 1963, then lived in Hampton from 1963 to 1966, and moved to Pine Bluff in 1966.

He married Gladys Parker on September 1, 1959, in Pine Bluff.

Mr. Tucker worked for Gaylord Paper Mill for 26 years, retiring in 1994 as a Technical Supervisor.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church ( formerly Edgewood Baptist Church).

Mr. Tucker is survived by his wife, Gladys Tucker; a son, Michael Tucker of Adona; a daughter, Connie (Danny) Box of Pine Bluff; a brother, Robert Tucker, of Sheridan; four grandchildren, Melissa (Brandon) Prater of Afghanistan, Nick Schurman of Iowa, Matthew Tucker of Mena, and Nathan Box of Pine Bluff.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Phillip Tucker and a sister, Helen Knickerbocker.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, at Robinson’s.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 12, 2011, 2:00 PM, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend Jonathan Mertens officiating. Interment will follow at Cypress Memorial Gardens.

Fusako Takase "Chaco" King
September 28, 1946 - October 10, 2011

Fusako Takase "Chaco" King, 65, of Pine Bluff, died Monday, October 10, 2011.

She was born September 28, 1946 in Saitame Prefecture, Japan, daughter of Shigeru and Kimi Oguma Takase.

Chaco attended Max Beauty College in Tokyo, Japan.

She worked for several salons including Guys & Dolls, La Madeline, Salon Cordé and Fratesi and Company. Chaco most recently worked for Joydell’s Tan.

Chaco became a Christian in 1991 and changed her life forever. She later became a faithful member of Family Church in White Hall, where she loved serving as the Saturday Night greeter.

She had an amazing personality, with a laugh that could make everybody smile.

Chaco recently earned her American citizenship and often talked proudly about her accomplishment.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Lee King; parents; and brother, Hidehiro Takase.

Survivors include her son, Louis King of Hot Springs; two sisters, SumikoYagihara and Miwako Watanabe, both of Tokyo, Japan; and a grandchild, Mason King of Hastings, Pennsylvania.

Chaco will be in state Thursday at Robinson’s.

A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 15, 2011 at Family Church with Reverend Stephen Harrison officiating. Arrangements were handled by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors
