Hazel Bogan States

JONESBORO -- Hazel Bogan States of Jonesboro, wife of Judge John States, died Tuesday evening in Skil Care Nursing Center at Jonesboro.

Born at Paragould, Mrs. States lived in Jonesboro since 1931. She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church at Jonesboro where she was active in Church School, and was a member of Jonesboro Business and Professional Women.

Mrs. States was a legal secretary and retired with 20 years of service with the Social Security Administration. She served as secretary in the Arkansas House of Representatives and the Arkansas Supreme Court.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge John States; one granddaughter; three brothers; four sisters; and her parents.

Survivors include one daughter, Susan Streeper of Taos, N. M.; one sister, Dotty Epstein of St. Louis; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services will be 10 a.m. today in Oaklawn Cemetery with the Rev. Jo Ann Barker officiating, with Emerson Funeral Home in charge.

There will be no visitation.

A memorial service will be held at a later date for the benefit of grandchildren residing out of the country.

Memorials may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church Children's Department at Jonesboro.

Elsie Miller Swaffor

AMAGON -- Mrs. Elsie Miller Swaffor, 90, of Amagon died Monday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claud Swaffor, and her parents.

She is survived by two sons, Roger and Donald Lester; four daughters, Joan Lopez, Beverly Lester, Shirley Kuzmish and Dianna Schwartz; one stepdaughter, Karen Hooper; four grandchildren; and best friend, Nola Hickman.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Saturday in Jackson's Newport Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Memory Garden Cemetery at Johnstown.

Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Jackson's Newport Funeral Home.

James Morris Turner

FLIPPIN -- James Morris "Jim" Turner, 64, of Flippin went to be with the Lord on April 18, 2006.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Turner, and constant companion, Tu. He is also survived by his best friend of over 40 years, Darrell Allison of Hot Springs; one daughter, Leigh Ann Morrison of West Plains, Mo.; one son, Jimmy Joe Turner of California; one brother, Rex Turner of Mountain Home; three grandchildren, Trista, C.J. and Cole of West Plains; his brothers and sisters by marriage, Larry Sutton, Dorothy Elkins and Bonnie Rudd; his father and mother-in-law, Joe and Louise Sutton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Maxine Turner, and one brother, Bobby Turner.

Jim was born and raised in Jonesboro. He attended Jonesboro schools. He started his career in the banking business and ventured into furniture, restaurant, auto and resort management businesses. In 1998 he moved to Flippin and purchased Stetson's Resort. Stetson's Realty and Stetson's Construction was a major vision of Jim's. Jim loved the White River, loved to fish and raise cattle and horses. He had a great appreciation for the beauty of the Ozarks. Jim always had a positive attitude. His warmth seemed to bring out the best in everyone he met. He was an inspiration to several young people who crossed his path in life. His family and long list of friends will miss him tremendously.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Saturday in Burns Funeral Home at Yellville. There will be a cremation with private memorial to follow.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes. Association, or if flowers, perennials for a memorial site at the resort.

Irene Imogene Wilson

WARRENTON, Mo. -- Funeral services for Irene Imogene Wilson, 88, of Warrenton, Mo., who died Wednesday were held Thursday in Carter Ricks Funeral Home at Winfield, Mo. Burial was in Bethany Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Eva Irene and Lawrence Schmied, and Frankie Joan and Arthur Jackson; three brothers, Dallas Gadberry and his wife Mary, Loyd Gadberry and his wife Fannie of Imboden, and Ray Gadberry; two sisters, Evelyn Martin of Ravenden, and Louise Miller and her husband Ralph; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Katrinka Jane Bounds

PARAGOULD -- Katrinka Jane Bounds, 57, of Paragould, formerly of Arbyrd, Mo., died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Arkansas Methodist Hospital in Paragould.

She was the daughter of the late Noel Storey and had been a longtime Arbyrd resident before making her home in Paragould six years ago. She was the widow of Mr. Jerry Edgar and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her father and husband, she was preceded in death by her adoptive mother, Mildred Meadows Storey.

Survivors include two sons, Jeremy Edgar and Jeff Edgar, both of Paragould; her mother, Mrs. Betty Storey of Manila; two brothers, Bobby Storey of Manila and Doug Storey of Hope; and two sisters, Susie Baker and Christy Dillon, both of Manila. She also leaves two grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today in the Manila Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Dill officiating under the direction of Howard Funeral Service of Manila.

The family will receive visitors this morning from 10:30 a.m. until time of service at the Howard Funeral Chapel in Manila.

Edith Mae Cox

CHEROKEE VILLAGE -- Edith Mae Cox, 86, of Cherokee Village died Thursday.

She was born March 20, 1920, in Granite City, Ill., and worked many years in the automotive and aircraft industries. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one son, Hollis V. Cox Jr. of Cherokee Village; three grandchildren, Hollis V. Cox III, Donna L. Cox and Sharon M. Ashley of Beebe; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services are Monday at 2 p.m. at Our Redeemer Cemetery in Afton, Mo.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tri-County Funeral Home of Hardy.

Bonnie Housh Hulett

SWIFTON -- Bonnie Housh Hulett, 77, of Swifton died Friday, April 21, 2006.

Survivors include three sons, Junior Hulett and wife Jane of Hoxie, Chris Hulett and wife Laura of Newport and Barry Hulett of Swifton; one daughter, Judy George of Swifton; three sisters, Erma Lee Simpson, Alice Eldridge and Verda Niswonger; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Swifton First Assembly. Interment will be in Swifton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. on Sunday.

Arrangements are by Jackson's Newport Funeral Home.

Ellen Gray Meroney Hurt

JONESBORO -- Ellen Gray "Cissy" Meroney Hurt, beloved mother of Bill Hurt Jr. and wife Sue of Jonesboro, Rodger Hurt and wife Shirley of Mountain Home and Porter Hurt and wife Dana of Jonesboro, passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2006, at St. Bernard's Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rex Dickey officiating. A private graveside service will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park under the direction of Emerson Funeral Home.

Pallbearers include Dan White, Mark Zimmer, Gary Curtis, Jimmy Casey, Stan Gott and Mark Flemon.

Visitation will be from 5-7 tonight at the funeral home.

Hurt was a member of First United Methodist Church and for many years was an active member of the Ladies Golf Association at the Jonesboro Country Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Hurt Sr.

Survivors in addition to her children include grandchildren, Blant Hurt, Mallory Johnston, Rodger Hurt, Jay Hurt, Gray Hurt, Jessie Hurt, all of Jonesboro, and Katlyn Hurt of Las Cruces, N.M.; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family requests that memorials be sent to the First United Methodist Church, 801 South Main St., Jonesboro 72401, the First Baptist Church, 200 West Wiley, Star City 71667, or the American Heart Society, P.O. Box 8033, Jonesboro 72403.

Loraine Jones

CABOT -- Loraine Jones, 87, of Cabot died Thursday, April 20.

She is survived by two sons, Doug Jones of Cabot and Stan Jones of Jonesboro; two half-brothers, Louie Cozad of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Raymond Cozad of Rockford, Ill.; two half-sisters, Pearl Acree of Pocahontas and Betty Cannady of Corning; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today in the chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with interment following in Masonic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Bessie Marcella Oakes

PARAGOULD -- Bessie Marcella Oakes, 75, lost a long and courageous battle to cancer on Friday, April 21, 2006.

Mrs. Oakes was born on Jan. 1, 1931, to W.A. and Monrie Padden Sumner.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna Huffman of Black Hawk, S.D., and Debbie Wayne of Springdale; two sons, Bill Hyde of State College, Penn., and Don Hyde of Paragould; one sister, Berna Coy of Paragould; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, seven nephews and two nieces.

Marcella was a long-time member and wonderful servant of Brown's Chapel Baptist Church. She was also a member of Greene County Extension Homemakers Club, American Legion Auxiliary and Unit 17 of Paragould. She was a longtime volunteer for the Light Neighborhood Service Center and the Crowley's Ridge Development Center. Being one who loved arts and crafts, Marcella volunteered at the Greene County Fair and the Craighead County District Fair.

Services will be under the direction of the Heath Funeral Home. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25, at Brown's Chapel Baptist Church. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Bernard's Hospice.
