Charles C. Fortner Sr.

RAVENDEN SPRINGS — Charles Crockett Fortner Sr., 96, died Tuesday, Oct. 9.

Survivors include a son, Charles Fortner Jr., and a foster son, Jim Andrews, both of Ravenden Springs; three daughters, Margie Riner of Ravenden Springs, Ruby Brown of High Ridge, Mo., and Mazie Matthews of Arnold, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Darrell Harris and Neil Inness officiating. Burial will follow in Masonic Cemetery with military honors provided by Promberger-Traw Post 4556 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Visitation will be from 5-8 this evening at McNabb Funeral Home.

Thelma Ruth Gibson

JONESBORO — Thelma Ruth Gibson, 75, of Jonesboro passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at St. Bernards Medical Center.

Ms. Gibson was born in Bono on Jan. 13, 1932, to John and Gladys Davis. She was retired from Southwestern Transportation and NEA Clinic, a member of Greensboro Road Church of Christ and loved her family and her home.

She is survived by three sons, David and Cindy Gibson, Perry and Magdalena Gibson and Randal and Naomi Gibson, all of Jonesboro; a brother, John R. Davis of Jonesboro; her mother, Gladys Davis; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Gibson; her father, John W. Davis; and two brothers, Clifford Davis and Frank Davis.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home Chapel with Terry Kee, Bill Willard and E. Winston Burton officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be this evening from 6-8 in the funeral home.

Pallbearers will include J.B. Wallace, Eugene Trotter, Randy Oden, Kevin Davis, Tony Pearson and Marshall Lands.

Carrie Kerley

JONESBORO — Carrie Isabel Kerley, 88, of Jonesboro died Saturday, Oct. 6, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.

Born in Bakersfield, Mo., Mrs. Kerley lived much of her life in the Bakersfield area before moving to Jonesboro 15 years ago. She was an elementary school teacher for several years and taught in Viola, Mammoth Spring and Bakersfield.

Mrs. Kerley was a graduate of Drury College in Springfield, Mo., and a member of Central Baptist Church in Jonesboro.

She was a member of the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association and was preceded in death by her first husband, Eliga Johnson; her second husband, Clovis Kerley; a great-granddaughter, Abigail Johnson; two brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, J.R. and Tronnia Johnson of Jonesboro; and two grandsons and their wives, Robbie and Stacey Johnson of Jonesboro and Kyle and Caron Johnson of Nashville, Tenn.

A graveside funeral service will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 in County Line Cemetery north of Viola with the Rev. Mike Martin officiating and Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro in charge of arrangements.

There will be no visitation.

For lasting memorials, the family asks that consideration be given to Central Baptist Church Television Ministry, 3707 Harrisburg Road, Jonesboro 72404.

Lottie Zell Locke

JONESBORO — Lottie Zell Locke, 82, of Jonesboro died Monday morning, Oct. 8, at Craighead County Nursing Center.

She had lived in Jonesboro since 1985, moving here from Marianna. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and was happy being a stay-at-home mom. Mrs. Locke loved to cook, was kindhearted and had open arms to anyone in need. She was of the Baptist belief.

She is survived by her son, William Locke of El Dorado; four daughters; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Grant Locke; a son, Robert Locke; her parents, James and Willie Mae Parks Williams; and all of her brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Emerson Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Curtis Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Pilgrim Cemetery at Marianna at 2:15 p.m. Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Active pallbearers will be Eric Sanders, Stanley Locke, James Williams, Emanuel Locke, Jimmie Harper and Kenneth Thomas.

Honorary pallbearers will include John Sanders, Lee Haywood, Alvino Cheatum and William Locke.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6-8 in the funeral home.

Bess Nall

LAKE CITY — Bess Nall, 88, of Lake City died Wednesday morning, Oct. 10, at Lakeside Nursing Center in Lake City.

Born in the Mangrum community near Black Oak, Bess lived in Caraway before moving to Lake City 56 years ago. She was an LPN and worked several years for George W. Jackson Center and St. Bernards Medical Center. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lake City and an active member of the Lake City Senior Citizens.

Bess was a 1962 graduate of Jonesboro School of Nursing and was preceded in death by her husband, Len Nall; a daughter, Rachel Lou Nall; two brothers; and five sisters.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Jim Robertson of Lake City and Linda and Leonard Nelson of Paragould; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Sandra Nall of Lake City; one sister, Lillian Robbins of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Huston Smith of Paragould; six grandchildren, Cindy Burton of Paragould, Brad Nelson of Jonesboro, and Laurie Talley, Len B. Nall, Blake Robertson and Heather Smith, all of Lake City; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10 in Pine Log Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Langston officiating.

Pallbearers will be Brad Nelson, Len B. Nall, Blake Robertson, Randel Talley, Larry Burton, Bruce Smith, Patrick Lenderman and Cory Burton.

Visitation will be this evening from 5-8 at Emerson Funeral Home in Lake City.

For lasting memorials, the family asks that consideration be given to Pine Log Cemetery Association, 11656 Highway 49, Brookland 72417.

Margaret Nelson

TRUMANN — Mrs. Margaret Nelson, 77, of Trumann died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007, at the family residence in Trumann of natural causes.

Mrs. Nelson was born in West Ridge and had lived in Trumann the past 11 years, having moved from Shasta, Calif. She was a retired school bus driver for the Shasta School District and member of Maple Grove Baptist Church of Trumann.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.H. Nelson Jr.; her parents, Henry and Ruby Scary Welch; and four brothers.

Mrs. Nelson is survived by one son, Jimmie W. and wife Jean Nelson of Elberta, Ala.; one daughter, Sharon Kay and Floyd Chaffin of Trumann; three brothers, Bill Welch of West Memphis, Jimmy Welch and Donnie Welch, both of Trumann; three sisters, Martha Holcomb and Carol Green, both of Trumann, and Brenda Lowery of Jonesboro; grandson, Jeremey Chaffin of the home; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday morning at 10 in the chapel of Thompson Funeral at Trumann with the Rev. Boyd Hosman and Dr. Jim Shaw officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Springs Cemetery near Harrisburg under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home of Trumann.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Chaffin, Jamie Chaffin, Jeremey Chaffin, Joshua Chaffin, Zachary Chaffin and Jarrod Weyer.

Honorary pallbearers will include Keith Weyer, Dr. Lance Tueken, John Derek Green, Kelley Walters, Topper Lowery and Jeff Lowery.

Visitation will be tonight from 5-8 at Thompson Funeral Home.

Chris Shaffer

HAMMOND, Ind. — Chris Shaffer, 38, of Hammond, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, from injuries received in an accident.

He was born in Jonesboro and was residing in Hammond, moving there from Midlothian, Ill.

Chris was preceded in death by his grandfather, Orin L. Becker Sr.; and an uncle, Orin “Len” Becker Jr.

He is survived by his father, Ted Shaffer of Benton; his mother, Ellen M. Sauerbier of Blue Island, Ill.; grandmothers, Myrl Becker of Jonesboro and Opal Wells of Clinton; several, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Potters Cemetery at Lepanto. There will be no public visitation.

Gene Tisdale

BONO — Gene Tisdale, 90, World War II Asian Pacific Campaign veteran and retired mechanic from McDonnell Douglas (Boeing) of St. Louis, died at his home in Bono from cancer on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Mackey Tisdale; his parents, Jesse L. and Lucy H. Washington Tisdale; three brothers, Harry Tisdale, Jesse Tisdale and James Tisdale; and three sisters, Irene Meyerholz, Bessie Gipson and Christeva West.

He leaves his daughter, Brenda Kay Tisdale Mackey; two grandchildren, Christopher E. Baumgarth of Wright City, Mo., and Tiffany L. McMillan of St. Peters, Mo.; great-grandchildren, Marcus S. Baumgarth, Kylee H. McMillan, Shane and Robin Lender, and Andrew and Kaylee Palmer; a sister, Geneva Hoodenpyle; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation and service will be in Valley View Missionary Baptist Church, 5924 Southwest Drive, Jonesboro, at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Gary Gipson officiating.

Interment service will follow in Cross Roads Cemetery with the Rev. Troy Mackey officiating.

Bobbie Fay Wilson

June 11, 1948 - Oct. 9, 2007

BLYTHEVILLE — Bobbie Fay Wilson, 59, of Blytheville died Tuesday.

Born at Danielfield, Texas, to the late Willie and Villar Cole Wilson, she was a retired factory worker and attended Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.

Survivors include her sister, Dessie Greenlow of Blytheville; and two brothers, Marvin Wilson of Indianapolis and Vernon Wilson of Osceola.

Two sisters and three brothers preceded her in death.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in Wilson Funeral Home at Osceola. Burial will be in Sandy Ridge Cemetery at Burdette.

Visitation will be Saturday evening from 5-7 in the funeral home.
