Leon Moore

JONESBORO — Leon Moore, 82, of Jonesboro, formerly of Malden, Mo., died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at St. Bernards Medical Center.

He was born July 2, 1925, at Malden to W.M. and Alma Eaker Moore. He married Ruby Arlene Pyle on Feb. 8, 1945, at Malden.

Leon was a salesman for Malden Furniture Store and member of Sunnyvale General Baptist Church at Malden. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Moore of Jonesboro; daughter, Debbie Earnheart and husband Danny of Jonesboro; two grandchildren, Brian Earnheart and wife Audra, and Sarah Earnheart, all of Jonesboro; sister, Lela Cooper of Dexter, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Landess Funeral Chapel at Malden with the Revs. Floyd Pyle and James Hamlett officiating. Burial will follow in Stevens Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday evening from 6-8 in the funeral home.

Dena Leona Pinner

MOUNT VERNON, Mo. — Dena Leona Pinner, 49, of Mount Vernon passed away Friday, May 9, 2008, in St. John’s Regional Health Center at Springfield, Mo.

She was born Sept. 14, 1958, at Walnut Ridge, the daughter of William and Thelma East Heard. On Dec. 23, 1990, at Walnut Ridge, she was united in marriage to Mark Pinner, who survives.

She is also survived by her mother, Thelma Heard of Hoxie; two daughters, Katrina Brundage and Jeff Meyer of Des Moines, Iowa, and Melissa Renfrow and husband Justin of Shell Knob, Mo.; one son, Billy Warren and wife Lydia of Red Lake, Minn.; one brother, Richard Heard of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Dena received her education in Gary, Ind., then attended college at Northwest Arkansas. For around 12 years she was a traveling LPN and was employed with Mount Vernon Place Care Center. She resided in Carroll County for several years, moving to Barry County three years ago.

Graveside services will be Wednesday, May 21, at 2 p.m. in Whittaker Cemetery near Walnut Ridge.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday in Fohn Funeral Home at Cassville, Mo., and after services at Troy and Tammy Chapel’s house.

Her body will be cremated under direction of Fohn Funeral Home.

Edward T. Prunty

JONESBORO — Edward T. Prunty, 60, of Jonesboro died Saturday, May 10, at St. Bernards Medical Center.

Edward T. was a member of First Baptist Church and was a hard worker until his health declined.

Survivors include his wife, Peola Prunty of the home; sons, Christopher Prunty, Javon Prunty and Shawn Trice, all of Jonesboro; daughters, Carmeisa Prunty, Kendra Prunty and Keitha Greer, all of Jonesboro; his father, John Edward Prunty of Jonesboro; sisters, Annie Mae Prunty of Chicago, Lois T. Andrews of Houston, Texas, and Pearletha Prunty of Jonesboro; brothers, Bobby Joe Slaughter of Jacksonville, Fla., Henry Louis Prunty, Johnny Prunty Jr., Jerome Prunty, Floyd Prunty, Jerry Prunty and Shadun Duncan, all of Jonesboro, and David Prunty of Little Rock; and 23 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorene Prunty; and brothers, Hubert Slaughter and Donnie Lee Prunty.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Woodard Funeral Service.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time.

Alonzo Richardson

BLYTHEVILLE — Alonzo Richardson, 90, of Blytheville died May 9, 2008, at Great River Medical Center.

Survivors include three sons, two daughters, one brother, 67 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.

Services will be Saturday, May 17, at 11 a.m. in New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church at Blytheville with burial in Memory Garden Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday evening from 6-8 in Wilson’s Blytheville Funeral Home.

Helen Marie Simmons

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Helen Marie Benson Simmons, 84, of Pensacola, formerly of Manila, died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Pensacola.

Born at Black Oak, she was the daughter of the late James Edward and Aida Barnes Mangrum and lived most of her life at Manila.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lockard Benson and Edgar Simmons; her daughter, Peggy Malone; and grandson, Lockard Alan Parker.

She is survived by her son, John Benson of Springdale; daughter, Linda Mimms of Pensacola; brother, Burel Mangrum of Durango, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Manila Cemetery under the direction of Howard Funeral Service of Manila.

The family will receive visitors Saturday from noon until service time in Howard Funeral Chapel at Manila.

Dorothy Eldridge Sweet

OSCEOLA — Dorothy Irene Eldridge Sweet, 92, of Osceola died Tuesday, May 13, at Osceola Health Care Center.

Born at Williford, she was the daughter of the late Ridley and Jessie Hill Eldridge and had lived most of her life in Mississippi County. She was a retired bookkeeper, the widow of Raymond Sweet and a longtime member of Brinkley Chapel Baptist Church near Osceola.

She is survived by three daughters, Joy McKenzie of Texarkana, Texas, Ramona Davis of Douglasville, Ga., and Marilyn Davis of Osceola; one sister, Mazine Markin of Germantown, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 4 stepgreat-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday in the Howard Funeral Service Chapel at Manila with the Rev. William Piercy officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery at Blytheville.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive visitors tonight from 6-8 in the funeral home.

Helen Holifield Watts

BAY — Helen Marie Holifield Watts, 57, of Bay died Wednesday, May 14, at St. Bernards Medical Center.

Born at Blytheville, Mrs. Watts moved to Paragould at a young age and moved to Bay in 1972. She worked several years as a purchasing manager for Wickes Lumber Co., Baldwin Piano and Optus Inc. before becoming disabled.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Bay, the Bay Athletic Booster Club and was active in community affairs.

She was preceded in death by her father, Chester Holifield; and a brother, Jimmy Holifield.

Survivors include her husband, Charles “Buddy” Watts of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Steve Pritchett of Bay; her mother, Helen Holifield of Blytheville; two brothers and their wives, Chester Dewayne and Penny Holifield of Blytheville and Joe and Sue Holifield of Paragould; two sisters and brother-in-law, Dean Hartwick of Blytheville and Glenda and Frank Jones of Suffolk, Va.; and two grandsons, Drew Sartin and Tyler Pritchett.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 in Emerson Memorial Chapel at Jonesboro with the Rev. Danny Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Active pallbearers include Vernon Davison, Kenny Vestal, Ronnie Davis Jackie Knight, Elbert Bradford and Billy Timmons. Honorary pallbearers include Mark Duckworth, Brian Duckworth and fellow co-workers at Optus Inc.

Visitation will be held tonight from 5-8 in Emerson Funeral Home.

Doyle LaFayette Hancock

JONESBORO — Sgt. Major Doyle LaFayette Hancock, 81, of Jonesboro died Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at the family residence.

Born at Myrtle, Miss., he had lived in Jonesboro for the past 12 years and was formerly of Memphis. He was a retired sergeant major for the U.S. Marines, serving in World War II special forces and the Korean War. He was a retired supervisor for Memphis Light Gas and Water and of the Baptist faith.

Sgt. Hancock was preceded in death by his first wife, Eulafaye Hensley Hancock; son, Tim Hancock; sister, Martha Dale Clayton; his parents, William Doyle and Jamie Gunter Hancock; and his stepfather, Charles M. Harlan.

Survivors include his wife, Genevieve Bushong Hancock of the home; daughter, Debbie Sparks and Norman of Knoxville, Tenn.; stepdaughter, Regina D. Young of Jonesboro; son, Gary and wife Shelia Hancock of Memphis; stepsons, John and Stacy Burgett of Memphis, Larry D. Lister of Knoxville and Tony Eugene Lister of Conroe, Texas; stepsisters, Bonnie Mixon and Betty Wallace, both of Trumann; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and special friends, Menda Bushong, Bud and Wanda Stahl, Jimmy and Pam Nichols, Pat and Pam Arnault, Dutch Green and wife, Dr. Scott Dickson, Joe Taylor and all the staff and therapist at St. Bernards Medical Center.

Graveside services will be Tuesday afternoon at 2 in West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at Memphis with the Rev. James Bud Stahl officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home of Trumann.

Pallbearers will be the Marine Guard.

Honorary pallbearers will be John Hancock Jr., James Hancock, Jared Sparks, Jason Sparks, John Burgett, Dr. Scott Dickson, Larry Lister, Tony Lister, Travis Young, Jimmy Nichols, Pat Arnault and Dutch Green.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
