Harold Detrick Parks

Feb. 22, 1980-July 5, 2008

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Harold Detrick Parks, 28, of South Bend died Saturday.

Born at Memphis, he was a factory worker and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Ly’coral Martin Parks of South Bend; sons, Harold Parks Jr. of Benton Harbor, Mich., and Corrion Parks of Niles, Mich.; stepdaughter, Latysa Woods of Niles; mother, Alice Lucille Burke of Selma, N.C.; sisters, Helena Caruthers of Jonesboro and Jawanda Parks of Selma; and brother, Walter Lashawn Gilmore of Selma.

Services will be today at 3 p.m. in Wilson Funeral Home at Osceola with burial in Whiteside Cemetery.

Jesse J. Smith

May 3, 1930-July 11, 2008

HIGHLAND — Jesse J. Smith, 78, of Highland died Friday at White River Medical Center at Batesville.

Born at Highland, he was a U.S. Army veteran, a business owner and farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Deltha Smith; son, Gary Smith; daughter, Mitzi Carmon; brother, Leonard Smith; sisters, Lorene Robinson and Ann Nealey; and grandchildren, Jordan and Morgan Carmon.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in Highland First Assembly of God with the Rev. Tim Turner officiating. Burial will be in Turkey Pen Cemetery at Highland by Tri-County Funeral Home of Hardy.

Visitation will be from 5-7 tonight in the church.

Justin Veach

LOST CANE — Justin Cory Veach, 32, of the Lost Cane Community near Manila died Thursday, July 10, at Great River Medical Center at Blytheville.

Born at Blytheville, he had been a lifelong resident of Lost Cane. He was valedictorian of the 1994 graduating class of Manila High School and later attended Arkansas State University.

Justin was born to farm; a fourth-generation farmer, he actually farmed the land cleared by his great-grandfather.

He was secretary of the Manila School Board and member of the Mississippi County Farm Bureau Board and State Affairs chairman. Justin was a lifelong member of Little River Baptist Church at Lost Cane.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Eddie Ashabranner and Donald and Helen Veach.

He is survived by his wife, Kristy Wilson Veach of the home; two sons, Drew Veach and Jake Veach, both of the home; his parents, Randy and Thelma Ashabranner Veach of Lost Cane; a brother and sister-in-law, Brandon and Juliane Veach of Lost Cane; niece, Mary Ambrette Veach and nephew, Tyler Edward Veach, both of Lost Cane; his grandparents, Jessie Ashabranner of Manila, Harold and Nancy Senter of Keiser, and Dorothy Wilson of Wilson.

He also leaves his father- and mother-in-law, Rick and Sandra Wilson of Keiser; and a sister-in-law, Mallory Wilson of Keiser.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Little River Baptist Church at Lost Cane with the Revs. Todd Vinson and G.W. Endicott officiating. Burial will follow in Manila Cemetery under the direction of Howard Funeral Service of Manila.

Active pallbearers will be Tony Crowell, Tommy Wagner, Bryce Farmer, J.P. Baugher, Casey Wells, Corey Craine, Monte Middleton, Jason Walton and Heath Murray.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jared Stutts, Cory Harrison, Jason Mace, Sam Bourland, Richie Pierce, Jeremy Murray, Brian Baker, Freddie Fleeman and the Manila graduating class of 1994.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8 this evening in the funeral home.

A scholarship trust fund has been established for Justin’s children, Drew and Jake. Please make any contributions to Scholarship Fund for Drew and Jake Veach, c/o Heritage Bank, P.O. Box 1306, Manila 72442.

Henrietta Bickham

POCAHONTAS — Henrietta Bickham, 76, died Friday, July 18, 2008, at Randolph County Nursing Home.

She was born May 17, 1932, at Pocahontas to the late Henry Clay and Clara Irene Broadway Irvin.

She is survived by one son, Scott Davis of Carrollton, Ga.; two sisters, Mickey Hon of Pocahontas and Corkey Mathews of Sulphur Rock; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the Masonic Cemetery with Marion Stringer officiating under the direction of McNabb Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Terry Dollahite, Phil Dollahite, Kelly Schlachter, Chris Warren, Wayne Broadway and Michael Davis.

Ruby Altom Elliott

NEWPORT — Ruby Roberts Altom Elliott, 69, of Newport died Thursday, July 17.

She was born Nov. 15, 1938, at Swifton, the daughter of Arthur and Betty Smith Roberts.

Ms. Elliott was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Arthur Roberts Jr. and George Dunkin; and sisters, Lorene McCrory, Minnie Blasingame and Alice Dunkin.

Survivors include one brother, Kenneth Roberts and wife Kay of Diaz; and many special nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Gracelawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday evening from 6-8.

Judy Ellis

FONTANA, Calif. — Judy Ellis, 56, died Monday, July 14, 2008, at Meridian, Miss.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Ellis of the home; mother, Gertrude Beecher Hendon of Ellington, Mo.; sons, Jamin Ellis of Phenix City, Ala., and Mark Ellis of Fontana, Calif.; daughters, Lori Stevens of Fontana and Kachina Lopez of Rialto, Calif.; seven brothers; three sisters; seven grandchildren; and many relatives in Northeast Arkansas.

Visitation will be Sunday evening from 5-8 in Ermert Funeral Home at Corning.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Apostolic Fellowship Church at McDougal. Burial will be in Post Oak Cemetery at McDougal.

John Edward Harris

WYNNE — John Edward Harris, 81, of Wynne died Thursday, July 17, 2008.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include sons, John Harris Jr. of Nashville, Tenn., and Thomas Matthews of Springfield, Ill.; daughters, Bessie Matthews, Emma Matthews and Theresa Matthews, all of Decatur, Ill., Darlene Haines of Milwaukee and Marlene White of Topeka, Kan.; sister, Lelia Mae Pearson of Wynne; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 4 p.m. today in Woodard Funeral Chapel at Wynne with burial in Mount Moriah Cemetery at Vanndale.

Visitation will be from 3-4 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Reatha McGough Render

JONESBORO — Reatha McGough Render, 93, died Friday, July 18, 2008 at her home.

She was born on Aug. 15, 1914, at Lake City.

She was a homemaker and mother who along with her husband, M.E. Render, raised five children on farms at Lake City and on Cottage Home Road at Jonesboro. Her two favorite things in life were taking care of her children and the love of her church.

She enjoyed gardening, embroidery, cross titching and lots of handcraft projects. She was happiest when she was busy.

She was a charter member of Prairie Baptist Church near Lake City and of Windover Baptist Church at Jonesboro. She taught a ladies Sunday school class for 50 years and a ladies WMU Bible study for 25 years.

She is survived by her children, Mozean Nelson and husband James and Max Render and wife Linda, all of Jonesboro, Bette Veteto and husband Stanley of Memphis, Karen Hudson and husband Don and Keith Render and fiancée Connie Cox, all of Jonesboro; her beloved four grandchildren, Byron Nelson, Andrea Wood, Chad Render and Andrew Veteto; her eight great-grandchildren who were her pride and joy, Chloe Wood, Eli Wood, Clara Grace Wood, Emmalyn Wood, Kaylee Turner, Hunter Nelson, Mary Keaton Render and Stella Kate Render; and a brother, Gerald McGough of Jonesboro.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, M.E. Render; her parents, Alfred and Vera McGough; and one sister and two brothers, Viola Johnson, L.E. “Windy” McGough and Cledious “Stig” McGough.

A celebration of her life will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Windover Baptist Church with Dr. Winfred P. Bridges officiating. Burial will follow in Herman Cemetery under the direction of Gregg Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Visitation will be Sunday in Windover Baptist Church from 5-7 p.m.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Byron Nelson, Hunter Nelson, Harber Wood, Eli Wood, Chad Render and Andrew Veteto.

Her family especially appreciates Mary Ann Lacy, Virginia Helms and Wanda Thielemier, who have been her excellent caregivers for the last six years.
