Ronald Terry Reed

Nov. 9, 1965-July 16, 2008

OSCEOLA — Ronald Terry Reed, 42, of Osceola died Wednesday at Methodist University Hospital at Memphis.

Born at Osceola, he was a factory worker and member of Grace Temple Missionary Baptist of Osceola.

He was preceded in death by father, John Henry Reed Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Angela Reed; daughter, Terrica Reed; mother, Pearly Reed; brothers, John Henry Reed Jr. and Gary Grice, all of Osceola; and sister, Naomi Ivan of Kansas City, Mo.

Services were held Saturday in Grace Temple Missionary Baptist with Billy Driver officiating. Burial was in Whiteside Cemetery. Wilson Funeral Home of Osceola was in charge of arrangements.

Reatha McGough Render

JONESBORO — Reatha McGough Render, 93, died Friday, July 18, 2008, at her home.

She was born on Aug. 15, 1914, at Lake City.

She was a homemaker and mother who along with her husband, M.E. Render, raised five children on farms at Lake City and on Cottage Home Road at Jonesboro. Her two favorite things in life were taking care of her children and the love of her church.

She enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, embroidery, cross stitching and lots of handcraft projects. She was happiest when she was busy.

She was a charter member of Prairie Baptist Church near Lake City and of Windover Baptist Church at Jonesboro. She taught a ladies Sunday school class for 50 years and a ladies WMU Bible study for 25 years.

She is survived by her children, Mozean Nelson and husband James and Max Render and wife Linda, all of Jonesboro, Bette Veteto and husband Stanley of Memphis, Karen Hudson and husband Don and Keith Render and fiancée Connie Cox, all of Jonesboro; her beloved four grandchildren, Byron Nelson, Andrea Wood, Chad Render and Andrew Veteto; her eight great-grandchildren, who were her pride and joy, Chloe Wood, Eli Wood, Clara Grace Wood, Emmalyn Wood, Kaylee Turner, Hunter Nelson, Mary Keaton Render and Stella Kate Render; and a brother, Gerald McGough of Jonesboro.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, M.E. Render; her parents, Alfred and Vera McGough; and one sister and two brothers, Viola Johnson, L.E. “Windy” McGough and Cledious “Stig” McGough.

A celebration of her life will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Windover Baptist Church with Dr. Winfred P. Bridges officiating. Burial will follow in Herman Cemetery under the direction of Gregg Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Visitation will be tonight in Windover Baptist Church from 5-7.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Byron Nelson, Hunter Nelson, Harber Wood, Eli Wood, Chad Render and Andrew Veteto.

Her family especially appreciates Mary Ann Lacy, Virginia Helms and Wanda Thielemier, who have been her excellent caregivers for the last six years.

Anyone wishing to give a memorial offering may do so by donating to the Windover Baptist Church Building Fund, 311 Windover Road, Jonesboro 72401.

Elsie Ridgeway

NEWPORT — Elsie Ridgeway, 84, of Newport died Friday, July 18.

Ms. Ridgeway is survived by one daughter, Pam Hill and husband Rob of Newport; one grandchild, Suzie Bowen and husband Tony of Russellville; two great-grandchildren, T.J. Bowen and wife Anna and Kristen and husband Charles; one great-great-grandchild, Trey; two nieces, Jennie Engle and Carrie Cook; one great-niece, Candice Cook; and one great-nephew, Chris Cook.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday in Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Walnut Grove Cemetery.

Visitation is Monday night from 6-8 in the funeral home.

Densel Eugene Roy

MARKED TREE — Densel Eugene Roy, 86, of Marked Tree died Saturday, July 19, 2008.

Mr. Roy was a member of First United Methodist Church, a veteran of the United States Air Force and World War II. He was the owner of J.H. Roy and Son Construction Co. and farms.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Moore Roy.

Survivors include two daughters, Denise Taylor and Diana Perkins, both of Roswell, Ga.; grandchildren, Alison Taylor of Atlanta, Savannah and Alexandra Taylor and Taylor Perkins, all of Ros-well.

Visitation will be from today from 1:30-3 p.m. in Murphy Funeral Home of Marked Tree, with services beginning at 3. Ron Williams will officiate. Burial will follow in Marked Tree Cemetery under the direction of Murphy Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation, P.O. Box 422471, Atlanta 30342.

Malcolm Sawyers

BATESVILLE — Malcolm Sawyers, 81, of Batesville died Wednesday, July 16.

He was born Nov. 18, 1926, at Tupelo, the son of James Chapel and Carrie Sisson Sawyers.

He is survived by his wife, Refa Hopkins Sawyers; one daughter, Lt. Col. Delana Sawyers of Washington, D.C.; one stepson, Richard Mayfield of Tennessee; one stepdaughter, Pam Mayfield of Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, Franklin Sawyers of Troy, Mo.; and one grandchild, Tycelia.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Monday in Tupelo Baptist Church. Interment will be in White Lake Cemetery.

Visitation is tonight from 6-8.

Elma Mae Taylor

Sept. 16, 1911-July 18, 2008

BOYDSVILLE — Elma Mae Morrow Taylor, 96, died Friday at Pocahontas Healthcare and Rehab Center at Pocahontas.

Born at Boydsville, she was a homemaker, a dedicated member of Boydsville EHC and a member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church since 1923.

The daughter of Martha Ann Morrow, Elma was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Donald “Slim” Taylor; brothers, Royal McBee and Everett Morrow; and one daughter, Guelda Jacquline Taylor Valmassoi.

Elma is survived by two sons, Donald Duran Taylor of Crossville, Tenn., and Philip Autry Taylor and wife Shirley of Pocahontas; eight grandchildren, Terry Valmassoi of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Linda Valmassoi Weberlein, Steve Valmassoi, Gregorey Taylor, Janet Taylor Bianchi, all of Michigan, David Neal Taylor of Memphis, Angela Taylor Smith of Lake City and Mark Andrew Taylor of Michigan; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In life, Elma was a hard-working Christian woman of character and determination. Whether making quilts for Boydsville EHC or riveting the wings and fuselage of B-24 bombers in Detroit during World War II, she always took great pride in her craftsmanship.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Irby Funeral Home at Rector with burial in Woodland Heights Cemetery at Rector.

Pallbearers are Richard Simpson, David Taylor, Alan Milburn, Marvin Milburn, Carson Hardin and Garvin Gatewood.

Visitation will be from 5-7 tonight in the funeral home.

Mrs. Taylor wished for those considering memorials in lieu of flowers to consider the American Cancer Society.

Cassie Wallis

Feb. 11, 1914-July 19, 2008

ASH FLAT — Cassie Wallis, 94, of Ash Flat died Saturday at Fulton County Hospital.

Born at Myron, she was preceded in death by her husband, Conard C. Wallis.

Survivors include three children, Connie Crouch of Wiseman, Judith Wallis and Roger Wallis, both of Little Rock; three grandsons; five great-granddaughters; and two great-great-grandsons.

Graveside services will begin Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Violet Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday from 6-8 p.m. in Tri-County Funeral Home of Hardy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Children’s Homes Inc., 5515 Old Walcott Road, Paragould 72450.

Rex Bennett Ward

April 11, 1944-July 18, 2008

JONESBORO — Rex Bennett Ward, 64, of Jonesboro died Friday.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett Ward and Ida Bell McKennie.

Survivors include his brother, Billy Ward of Clinton; sister, Betty Dennis of Benton; nephew, Eddie Dennis; and nieces, Tammy McCorkle, Lisa Kilgore, Tina Ward, Patricia Ward, Sandra Smullin and Terrie Ward.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Wilson Funeral Home of Tyronza is in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn Jo Cox

JONESBORO — Carolyn Jo Cox, 63, of Jonesboro died Sunday, July 20, at St. Bernards Medical Center.

Ms. Cox was a homemaker and lived most of her life in the Jonesboro-Bay area.

She was preceded in death by her father, E.A. Southard; and son, Franklin Keith Phelps.

Survivors are mother, Ms. Leda Southard of Jonesboro; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lesia Hay, Marsha and Tim Fry, and Teri and Ronnie Holder, all of Jonesboro; nine grandsons, Bobby Hay, Nick Hay, Bret Holder, Blake Holder, Bryan Holder, Ben Holder, Tyler Fry, Logan Fry and Adam Fry; and great-grandson, Hunter Hay.

Funeral services will be Tuesday morning at 10 in Jonesboro First Assembly of God on Stone Street with the Revs. Matt Smith and Greg Sanders officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Log Cemetery.

Visitation will be tonight from 6-8 in Emerson Funeral Home.
